Mac on domain

I am being asked to support our 4 Mac users in our graphic department. Setup are they need to be on the domain to be par with windows.
I am not an server guy or an engineer, just a desktop person at my work. I am thrown in cause I'm the only person in my groups that likes Mac because of my photograpy.
My Mac skill is just a basic home user.
Does the Mac need it own server?
Does Mac recognize .com and .net as the domain only?

Are you talking about an Internet domain or a Windows Active Directory domain. The former is trivial -- just a DNS entry. The latter is far more complicated and not worth doing for 4 users.

  • Cannot join Windows XP machines to the Mac PDC domain

    Frustrated...
Yesterday, I was able to successfully add 5 Windows XP machines to the Mac PDC Domain (lets call it xyz.lan). Those machines show up as valid computer accounts in Workgroup Mananger (PC1$, PC2$, etc.). Users are able to logon to those Windows XP machines using their Mac Open Directory user account and access their home folder, etc.
This morning, for some reason, I can no longer join XP machines to the Mac PDC domain. On both PCs I tried it with, I receive a "Insufficient System Resources exist to complete the requested service" on the Windows XP machine. I am using the diradmin user account and password to supply credentials. Same exact process as yesterday (which worked fine).
A couple things of note. I made sure the PDC domain is set to Enabled for allowing Guest Access and that WINS Registration is also enabled. Authentication is lso set for NTLMv2 and NTLM for enabled. I also tried rebooting the server this morning as well. It's running 10.5.4. This was not an upgrade from 10.4, but a fresh install of Leopard.
No changes were made on the server between yesterday and today that I am aware of.
Looking at the /var/log/samba/log.smbd log, there are thousands of entries for "This process has forked and you cannot use this corefunctionality process, You must EXEC()" etc... The log also shows failures when the XP machine tries to join to the domain. Log entries are listed showing, "pdbdefault_createuser: failed to add new account for 'PC6$'". Adding PC6$ manually via Workgroup Manager doesn't help either.
Any idea what to check next? I read so many varied things about Leopard and SMB not quite playing nice. People mentioning they had to go through all sorts of hurdles to get this working. Any advise is welcome.

Any news about this? I'm having the same problem trying to join a Vista box to the domain. Here are the logs:

  • Publishing iWeb site to .Mac personal domain

I set up Personal Domain on .Mac & added the cname on my account with Network Solutions & are waiting for the changes to take effect now. But I have 2 sites in iWeb. How do I get the right site on the personal domain.

    Hi again,
My Problem is that it is not clear how to redirect mlwhall.com --> www.mlwhall.com
Since CNAME is for aliases, I am not sure how to point mlwhall.com since that is the root name. The A (host) will only take an IP address, so I assume that if I am going to do this I need to do it in the CNAME section (pinging did not get me a useable IP address). I cannot believe I am the only person that wants to do this -- setting up domain forwarding does not seem to work either
Is it not common for people to want to have www.blah.com and blah.com to resolve to the same place?
    ----Martin----
And yes -- I meant to say that I made a CNAME alias for www that points to web.mac.com as pointed out in the personal domain instructions.

  • Adding Windows AD Server to Mac OD Domain

    Help...
We are adding an Active Directory server to our network, to assist with larger groups and email issues. Problem is, through searching I've found people who say it is easy and others who say it will just fall apart. But... Nothing concrete about how to properly go about making sure it works the way it is supposed to...
Anyone know of any good articles or documentation about adding in a AD server? Eventually we need to promote it to the master and still have the mac servers as replicas (or at least still part of the system, so we can update them as needed).
    Any thoughts?
At this point I have the server up and running, but it will not bind to the OD master.  It keeps complaining about the username and password being wrong (even though they are not, and I've tried many different accounts).  I tried adding the AD server as a replica of the OD master, and that failed as well.  The OD server said that the replica was missing the Server app...
Thanks for any help with this, at all...

Just don't.
Your best & only option is in the other direction, and is built-in and supported by the Mac OS: Binding FROM the Mac (server or client) to Active Directly.
The best you could do is authenticate your Windows client (only !) machines to Apple's Open Directory via pGina, see http://pgina.org/
That will not provide any AD domain administration features at all as the Apple OD server doesn't even offer them = Group Policy, and more.

  • .Mac 'Personal Domain' and Aperture Galleries?

    hi all.
I have a personal domain www.gregory.hk and I've arranged with my DNS guys to set up a subdomain gallery.gregory.hk with the CNAME pointing to web.mac.com
I'm getting two impressions from searches I've done on Apple:
    1. personal domains only apply to .Web and not to Galleries.
    2. personal domains must be a 'www' subdomain; i.e., the subdomain must be www[.mySub].myDomain.hk
    So, the questions:
has anyone created galleries with Aperture and sent them to their personal domain?
has anyone been able to use a personal domain that doesn't include the www sub? after all, all that really matters is that requests to web.mac.com are via Port 80... right?
    cheers,
    Gregory

    great answer. thank you.
although the .Mac galleries have a slick interface (and Aperture only uploads new/edited photos), I have a few problems with the .Mac galleries:
the url shows your mac.com user name! I like to keep my @mac.com address secret so that's a big problem.
    no comments?
very limited space (and not customisable) for album descriptions.
no captions? (or am I blind and miss it?)
I want to have a slick gallery that can be configured/populated from Aperture, and preferably be styled/coded to match my MT4 blog (I'm working on a new version of my blog at this time...).
mac.com was a consideration because my .Mac subscription includes the storage/bandwidth and it's just sitting there not getting used.
SmugMug Photo is another consideration but I'm a little concerned about the work needed to (a) simplify the interface and (b) match it up with my blog design. (I don't like cluttered album designs. here's one of my own hand-designed albums for reference.)
for the record, I'm handy with xhtml and css.
suggestions, input and opinions would be welcomed.
    sincerely,
    Gregory

  • Join Windows PC with Mac Server domain

    Hello
We are having a Mac OS X Server and few Microsoft PCs.
We want to join all PCs into domain of OS X Server.

  • .mac & personal domain, so which page first?

Ok, i will try to be as clear as possible here.
Anyone who used the old style of web forwarding willl know that in order to view one particular page first (opening page) you would normally publish your website and use the url of that one page to forward with your registrar...However, i am now using .mac to forward my personal domain, but i don't understand how i get one page to load first. For example i regularly have adverts for the site which i like to open first so everyone will see it before actually entering into the main site, but now using .mac it just opens one page...luckily for me its the main page. Does anyone know or understand what im saying here? Please help!! Rob
Oh yeah, by the way, if you want to look my address is
    http://www.nelsonrfc.co.uk
I have also tried putting the page i want to open first at the top of the list and that doesnt work either...
    Message was edited by: robbie190975

I was under the impression it was the top page in the site.
It should be whatever page is displayed first when you go to web.mac.com/username
I don't know if that helps, but it might give you a way to experiment.

  • .mac personal domain hosting

New user to .MAC and iLife '08
I've read all the posts about personal domain hosting on .mac, performed all the DNS changes with CNAME at GoDaddy and performed all the steps to add the domain at .Mac. Im still not getting the site to load/sync (instead I get the default page).
I have two .Mac accounts and wonder if this is confusing the sync.
I created the site synced it with my .mac account. It still appears as if under web.mac.com/mydomain/home.html
Since I followed the described proceedures in all the posts Im not sure where the disconnect is. Can anyone help me get my personal domain files to sync.

Could you start by providing your .Mac and your Godaddy urls? Also how long have you been waiting?

  • Naming and Joining Macs to Domain after Netrestore

    Hi,
We have around 150 Macbook Pros (Yosemite), we have been updating the OS on them for a while and this summer i am planning for a wipe and install by Netrestore with my Yosemite Server. I was wondering if there was a script i could run after the net restore process that can name and join them to my AD. Our Naming convention is MAC-(Teacher designation)-(Department)-(Initials). Is this possible??... I am not an expert in scripting so was hoping somebody could help.
    Thank you!!

If you're creating your images using System Image Utility there's an action for doing exactly that... Apply System Configuration Settings.

  • Changing password from a Windows XP computer for a Mac managed domain

I've experimented a little with this a did a search but can't seem to find information on it...
We have an Apple Xserve running OS X 10.4 and I am considering using it to manage a Microsoft Windows domain for our Windows PCs. It seems quite capable of doing that.
However, I was trying out changing a user password (user and password are from the Apple Open Directory server) from a Windows PC on another domain using the usual method you would do that: username, domain (actually exists on the Apple), old password, new password, etc. There seemed to be something missing as it didn't work.
Will this only work if the PC is part of the Domain for the username that needs the password changed? You can change passwords across Domains normally if doing this from a Windows PC, in my experience.
I need to be sure that MS Windows users will be able to change their passwords from their PCs before I move any MS Windows computers on to the Apple Server managed Domain.
    Anyone have information on this?
    Thanks.

nslookup resolves the DNS name when on both the server and the client MS windows PC.
I re-started the Windows service on the server and it now shows in the domain and is accessable through browsing the MS Network "My Network Places". So all of that was probably a tangent.
I've tried the password changing again a few times since but no luck. The server logs seem to show failed authentication for user "admin" but the username I was trying to change the password for was another username. ???

  • Outlook 07, Non Mac / own domain emails and the iPhone

I am thinking about whether to buy an iPhone 3G or the Blackberry Bold. I am confident that I will be able to get my email to work with the Blackberry. Since finding mobileme will not sync no me.com email folders from outlook I am now worried that I am worried that it may not be possible on the iPhone.
Can you tell me whether I can send, receive and sync my existing email account on the iPhone?

Who is the email account provider for your email account, and is the email account an IMAP or POP account?
If your email account is an IMAP account, you can keep the server stored mailboxes for the account synchronized with the server with the iPhone's Mail client, and with the email client used on your computer for accessing the account.
If the account is a POP account, you can access it as with any other POP account. Mailboxes with a POP account are not kept synchronized with the server.

can . mac host more than one of my domains at a time?????

can . mac host more than one of my domains at a time?????
.Mac doesn't host domain names. If you are talking about web sites, you can have as many sites as will fit in your storage space. You can also use url forwarding to point to as many sites as you want.
The right place to ask questions about .Mac and domains is probably:

  • How do I use .Mac to send for a different acount?

    Hello
I recently migrated from Eudora to Mail.
I have several accounts. For travelling, in Eudora, I set up my accounts so as not to check mail and used the .Mac settings: smtp.mac.com for outgoing mail. I set as return address the address I wished the reply to go to.
In mail I have been unable to do this. Using the "reply to" field still shows my private .Mac address in addition to my business reply to address.
I would appreciate some help in setting up an additional account that will show my business return address but use the .Mac settings which I can use practically anywhere. (In a hotel my usual ISP is rejected)
    Many thanks

I don't believe this works with the authenticated
.Mac SMTP server regardless where a person is
    connected to the internet.
I'm fairly certain Apple prevents using the .Mac
authenticated SMTP with any email account other than
a .Mac account as part of an overall effort to
prevent spam emanating from .Mac's domain.
When using .mac mail via a web browser one can send mails with another
address appearing in the "from" field (rather than [email protected]).
Shouldn't this then also be possible when using the smtp server?
After all, the access to the smtp server is controlled by the same userid
and password as the access to the .mac mail website.
I did not succeed to find a way so far but
this would be an immensly useful feature......

  • Connected to Domain but can't log in using Actived Directory Credentials

Hey everyone.  I've been working on this issue for two weeks now, and I don't know what else to try.  I'm connected to my domain but cannot get my Macbooks to log in using Active Directory credenitals both through our wireless network, and hard wired with an ethernet cable.  The weird part about it is that it is not uniform all across our network.  This only happens to certain Macbooks and as of right now there doesn't seem to be a pattern.  I can say that it has happened to all new Macbook Pros that we have ordered lately though.
We use Jamf to manage our Macs on our network, and ever since upgrading to a new version (9.01 and now 9.1) we have had this issue.  However I can't connect after manually adding the domain either, so for now it makes me think it is not a Jamf issue.  Has anyone dealt with this issue before, that might know of a fix?  Thanks!

    Hi Burnettb1,
I have come across a similar issue as yours.  I have included the instructions that I use to bind the Mac at my institution.  In regards to wifi, I have not tried binding the Mac over wifi. Should you need to log in to a Mac with domain user credentials I would suggest to bind the Mac over ethernet.  Once you get to the:

portion of the instructions click on the Mappings tab and select the checkbox for creating a mobile account at login.  This will create a domain user profile on the machine that you can log into when not connected to the domain.
    Hope this helps.
