Mac On Network Mounting At Startup

Whenever I restart (or when the Finder relaunches-see previous post), one Mac on my network mounts on its own. I know in the OS 9 days, you could tell a volume to automount on restart, but I don't know if that's possible in OS X. I've scoured my startup drive for that volume's name, but there's nothing at all.
Anyone? Bueller?

Mount the volume. Then go to Accounts in System Preferences. Select the Login Items and drag the disc from the finder to the list of items.

  • Can't mount a network drive at startup - Mac boots too fast?

    Hi all,
On every Mac I've owned for the last few years, I dragged the icon of my file server to my Login Items list and the Mac would flawlessly mount the drive.
Now with my Mac Pro, the machine seems to boot so darn fast that I get an error that the server doesn't exist, but if I immediately manually do a Cmd-K and mount the drive, then it works. I put my old G5 back on the network and it worked, as did my Macbook Pro and my old G4 Cube.
So, although I can't prove it, it seems to me that the Mac is trying to mount the drive before the Mac finds the network. If this is true, how can I solve this problem?
    Mike

    Hi Michael,
I'd try this method instead of dragging to the Login items...
    http://www.bombich.com/mactips/automount.html
I'd experiment with the Static vs. Dynamic also.

  • Mount a network disk at startup?

OK, so I know I can create an alias to a network drive and copy it into the System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items list.
But on my config when I startup, I pass over the login screen and go straight to the desktop. This seems to mean that the startup items don't run like they should... or at least the alias isn't called correctly, thus my network drive isn't mounted correctly.
Any ideas how to mount a network drive at startup without having to first stop at the login screen?
    Thanks!
    Jake

    Hi, Jake.
    1. You wrote: "But on my config when I startup, I pass over the login screen and go straight to the desktop."I presume you have configured your Mac to "Automatically log in as..." your account in System Preferences > Accounts > Login Options.
Automatic login should not prevent items you have added to System Preferences > Accounts > your_account > Login Items from running. The items placed in this list are known as Login Items and are run when you log in to your account.
If you're interested in the technical details, see "The Boot Process".
    2. Under Tiger, the term Startup Items applies to applications that are run when you startup your Mac. They are in the following folders:• Macintosh HD > System > Library > StartupItems. These are System-related Startup Items included with Mac OS X.
    • Macintosh HD > Library > StartupItems. This is where third-party applications install other applications that are executed when you start up your Mac. Such applications run after the System-related Startup Items.Do not place the alias to your network volume in either of these folders. Never change the contents of the second folder unless specifically instructed to do so as part of troubleshooting.
    3. You wrote: "...my network drive isn't mounted correctly."Can you be more specific? What is incorrect about the mounting?  By "network drive" do you mean network-attached storage (brand/mode?) ? Or is this a volume being shared by another Mac or a PC?
    4. Are you saying that, if you disable automatic login on your account and restart your Mac, you are prompted to authenticate mounting the network volume, and then the volume mounts normally?
    5. Note that if the "network drive" is a volume being shared by another computer, and the computer sharing the volume isn't available (asleep, shutdown, AirPort off, offline, etc.) this could delay your login process a bit as your Mac tries to find it.
    Good luck!

  • Mounting Network Drive Upon Startup

Is it possible to mount a network drive upon startup so that my auto backup program can see and backup to it?
If so, how is this setup?
    Thanks,
    James

Try doing i manually instead of using sharepoints tool.
    http://www.bombich.com/mactips/automount.html
Ive always doen it this way and had success wheher wired or wireless... unless ofcourse the network jsut wasnt avaialble.

  • Mounting network drives at startup?

I know this could be done in 10.4, but I can't figure it out in 10.5. I am wanting to have a couple network drives connect at login and mount to the desktop. Currently I have to go into the shared computers and drives via the finder, then connact as. Is there a way to get these to mount at startup?

You can also create Automator applications that launch at login. Take a look at this tutorial:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=144914
(the post at 08-20-2005, 10:13 PM has the answer I used)
Since I have a Storage Area Network, shared drives and a cluster, I have to make sure that each node (computer) can see the shared storage, the cluster controller and the place where the source file for rendering is located. So, instead of worrying about keeping it all configured, I just made a Workgroup, assigned Read/Write privileges for any admin user, turned on Apple Talk, and made a script to mount all the local drives (ComputerName.local) for all computers, except for the local one.
Since managed, render services can also be flaky, I also wrote a script that resets the services at login (in case the IP changes or what ever).
It works like a charm, and better yet, I can see it running at login.
    Cheers,
    Jeff W.

  • How to keep an internal drive from being mounted on startup?

Other than opening the box and disconnecting them physically, how do I keep an internal drive from being mounted at startup? I have two problems:
    1) despite having an SSD drive marked as the startup drive, I think one of my other drives is being considered first - startup takes a long time and it shows the gray circle with a line through it, before acquiescing into booting (rapidly and nicely) from the SSD drive. How do I make it ignore the other drives and go right for this?
    2) when the system boots up, if I don't immediately dismount the internal drives (which I don't need most of the time), Time Machine and Spotlight begin going over them.
other than physically removing them, anything I can do in some OS X boot script to keep those drives from being mounted?

Ok, I followed your directions (including de-seleccting and re-selecting the SSD as boot disk from System Preferences). Console: there was nothing under System Diagnostic Reports, but here's what the All Messages logs said after the Boot_Time that demonstrated my issue (3 min wait, then gray circle with a line through it, then finally rapid boot off the SSD). Is there anything here that shows what the heck it's doing before it actually boots off the SSD?

  • Permanent, persistent network mount?

I'm looking to set up a permanent, persistent network mount from my OS X Leopard Mac to my Windows server.
But here's the thing: I don't just want this this to mount on startup/login - that's easy, so I beg you, don't respond with the "drag it to your Startup Items, etc." trick. I want it to exist AT ALL TIMES. On initial login, when the Mac wakes from sleep, after fast user switching, after I haven't accessed the share in three days - ALL THE TIME. In short, God help me, I'd like to find a way to make my Mac behave like my Windows PCs: I want my Mac's network share to behave like a mapped drive in Windows.
I've been looking to do this since I got my new MacBook Pro - it'd be just amazing if someone could show me how to do it. It's maybe the only thing in the OS where I prefer the Windows way of doing things to the Mac - here's hoping I've just missed it.

    Scott,
I am in the same situation as you and need to know how to do this just as network drive mapping works in Windows.
I have seen a few scripts but they are short on handling the sleep situation.
I will be watching this thread so if you do find a solution please let me know.
    Regards,
    Robert

  • How bad is it to have 4 network mounts for home folders?

I am the tech curriculum guy at a middle school and also manage the servers. I am not an expert at all. Learn enough to make it work efficiently. We got a new server (intel). I am in the process of migrating all the users, groups, home folders and data etc. Had some problems so I called Apple, in my discussion with the tech support there (3-4 hours solving problems) one of the techs questioned my setup. Here is what I used to do:
Server one has all the users in workgroup manager. The home folders for the 6th, 7th and 8th graders are on two separate drive bays on server one. Each grade level folder is a network mount. I then have the faculty home folders on a server two. There is also a shared folder called "Stuff" which mounts for all users and has clipart, movies etc. It is basically a read only mount. The faculty home folders are network mounts of their home folders.
I service between 400 and 500 students a day in the lab, it is quite busy, with anywhere from 60 to 90 users logged on at one time. My thinking last year was that if I could spread out the home folders on different drives, the students wouldn't all be hitting the same drive for saves, data etc. So that one drive wouldn't be spinning its brains out to keep everyone going. That is why I have the 4 network mounts for the home folders. One for each grade level (6,7,8) and the faculty.
My new server has three drives, two of them for home folders. The drives are 750 gb each. He (apple tech) suggested I create a folder in each drive, set it as the network mount and within that folder put two sets of home folders. So, then I would only have two network mounts, but retain my four sets of home folders that would be within the network mounts.
I guess my question is, which is better, to have the 4 network mounts with separate home folder locations on 2 different servers, or consolidate the home folders into 2 network mounts on one server.
He said that the more network mounts, the longer it takes to get computers started up.
Any expert advice here would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, hope I explained this well enough.
Intel Imac Mac OS X (10.4.8) Lab- Education Intel iMacs - PPC eMacs

I don't think the logins take too long, we may wait 30 seconds or so for the students to login. We have had problems when 60 kids leave and 60 more come in, some login and after the username and password are entered, the login begins then locks. The Apple tech guy thought that could be aggravated by the 4 network mounts. I just sort of thought that with students and teachers accessing 4 different hard drives, that it wouldn't tax one drive as much. I agree that a longer login is a small price to pay for faster working speeds.

  • Internal hard drives not mounting on startup

Problem: I recently did a clean install of Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion on my Early 2008 Mac Pro. Since then, one or more of my four internal hard drives will not mount at startup, and it's seemingly random which ones will or won't mount; it differs from one startup to the next. Obviously, the boot drive starts up, but the remaining three drives are hit-or-miss.
Troubleshooting So Far: I can open Disk Utility and mount the disk(s) manually, and when I click Verify Disk, the hardware checks out okay. After my most recent startup, I brought up the System Log in Terminal (sudo syslog -B) and found this entry for one disk ("Media 1") that did not mount:

There were no entries for the disks that mounted correctly. Can anyone make sense of this for me? The system jargon is a little beyond me.
    Thanks for your help!

Is "Media 1" the name of the volume, or is it just "Media"?

  • Word 2008 for Mac and NFS mounted home directories "Save File" issues

    Greetings everyone,
(Long time lurker, first time poster here)
I admin a small network (under 20 workstaitons) with a centralized NFS server, with user home directories mounted via NFS upon login.  Users are authenticated via LDAP.  This is all working fine, there is no problem here.  The problem lies when my users use Microsoft Word 2008 for Mac.  When they attempt to save a file to thier Desktop (or Documents or any folder under thier home dir) they are met with the following message:
    (dialog box popup)
"Word cannot save or create this file.  The disk maybe be full or write-protected.  Try one or more of the following: * Free more memory. * Make sure the disk you want to save the file on is not full, write-protected or damaged. (document-name.ext)"
This happens regardless of file format (Doc, Docx, Txt) and regardless of saved location under the network mounted dir.  I've noticed that when saving Word creates a .tmp file in the target directory, which only further confuses me to the underlying cause of the issue.
When users logon to a local machine account and attempt the save, there is no issue.
I have found many posts in other commuity forums, including this one, indicating that the issue is a .TempoaryItems folder in the root of the mounted directory.  This folder already exists and is populated with entries such as "folder.2112" (where 2112 is the uid of the LDAP user).  I find other posts indicating that this is an issue with Word:2008 and OSX10.8, with finger pointing in either direction, but no real solution.
I have installed all Office for Mac updates from Microsoft (latest version 12.3.6).
I have verified permissions of the user's home dir.
I have also ensured that this issue effects ONLY Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac apps, LibreOffice and other applications have no issue.
Does *ANYONE* have a solution or workaround for this issue?  While we're trying to phase Microsoft products out, getting users to ditch Word and Excel is difficult without removing them from systems completely.  So any pointers or help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.
    ~k

I can't tell you how to fix bugs in an obsolete version of Office, but a possible workaround is to use mobile home directories under OS X Server. The home directories are hosted locally and synced with the server.

  • Prevent internal drive from mounting at startup

How do I easily prevent an internal hard drive from mounting at startup?
The machine has two internal drives and I want the upper drive to not mount unless needed. Both are bootable but lower is chosen as the startup drive.
    Thanks for any help.
    G5 dual 2.5 ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Take it out and put it in a removable FW + SATA case.
There is little need or reason to have it not mount. If it is backup or emergency drive, external would be preferable... and put internal drive bay to some other use.

  • Mac book air.  its startup disk is jammed full.  frozen

my assistant has a mac book air.  its startup disk is jammed full.  I was able to access iphoto so she could delete some files.  The computer wont load the dock so i can empty the trash.  what can I do to free up space and get the machine running again

Then you're in luck. Start the MBA in target disk mode and connect it to the MBP with a Thunderbolt cable. The internal drive of the MBA will mount on the MBP as if it were an external drive. Copy some of the files, then delete the originals. You should have at least 9 GB of free space when you're done, preferably much more to allow for expansion.

  • Prevent drive from mounting at startup

There is an archived message on this same subject that never received a reply.
I perform my backups to a second internal drive and would like to prevent it from mounting at startup. Any ideas?
To clarify: I can come up with many ways to UNmount a drive when a user logs in however I'd like the drive to simply not mount at startup. Our machine runs unattended, without a user logged in, so allowing the "backup drive" to not mount would be safer and also conserve a bit of energy (as unmounted drives are allowed to spin down.)
    Qny and all help appreciated.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
If the drive gets its power from the computer to start up, you can't prevent it from mounting at startup. If the drive is under its own power, just leave its switch turned off until you are ready to mount it. Both Firewire and USB are hot connectable, meaning you can power it while it is already connected to the computer. SCSI on the other hand is not.
I have found this to be one weakness of the LaCie d2 case design is that it gets some power from the computer, and hence always mounts at startup if plugged in to the wall and connected to the computer.
Only cases that have a true on/off switch won't do that.
Backing up to internal drives is not wise. The whole point of having a backup drive is to have a drive that is able to recover information if the computer should permanently fail with the computer along with it, and also if the computer is stolen.

  • My Mac won't mount my external HDD after installing Lion - What can I do?

My Mac won't mount my external HDD after installing Lion - What can I do?
HDD: Verbatim 3.5'' External HDD  eSATA & USB 2.0 #48802
I can not find it in Disc Utilities - so I can not repair it.
I also haven't found any Driver for the HDD to do an update.
My Mac is running on the most recent updates of OS Lion.
The HDD worked before. It contains my former Time-Mashine Backups. I would like to use this drive again. It isn't very old yet.
It would be much appreciated if anyone could help.
    Cheers,
    Yves

OK, try restarting in Safe Mode and if that doesn't work try resetting the SMC and PRAM.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
