Mac or PC as monitor

Ok for the tons of you that have been asking if it is possible to use your mac or pc as a second monitor, here is a link to an article for a new program that might do what you want:

I tried to get it to work as advertised, but I must be missing a step. Do you have it working where one machine is an Intel Mac, while the other is PowerPC? Maybe that's my problem.

The company I bought it from is not Apple, and I may regret that. It was in my price range, though.
This is the first time I've used this community, and I've been a Mac owner since 2000. Thanks in advance!

when you say "Mac flat screen LCD", do you mean this:

No unless we are talkign about a late 2009 or 2010 27" iMac. Otherwise PC's don't have the correct outputs. Please look over Apple's FAQ on that subject (Target Display Mode) and you will see what I mean:

haha, so now i'm thinking. I'm learning the terminal as fast as i can but there are several lines of codes and commands in there that throws up red flags to me that i don't fully understand. It just looks fishy too me. It would be highly appreciated if someone could just check this out just to tell me that i don't need to worry about it. Or point me in the right direction. I just feel un easy about this. ha.

You can in fact buy what you want, no need to go with Apple TV
To connect (wirelessly) your Mac to the HDMI on the TV:
They range from $100 on up.

Got the "apple firewire ntsc" choice to show up even if grayed out and "missing" under "audio/visual" menus by recreating choices in Easy Setup under "final cut pro" MENU thank GOODNESS because I was reading horror stories on here about this under another thread with someone trashing preferences, reinstalling and the works and still not getting it to show up...on my search now for an analog/digital converter up at b&h...find it odd that the s video connector wouldn't show the crt monitor when I put both displays through the 3870...I switched it back to see if it worked again when only the one dell monitor display was there and there it is again mirroring the screen display on my desktop...just can't be seen as an "external monitor" in fcp...couldn't find anything specific in the shane ross threads to this. I'm sad the program doesn't just see the s video connection though the 3870 though my computer does fine and will query up at b&h in regard to what might be affordable as far as a digital/analog converter. It's also weird in itself that when I put the two dell monitors on the one card my computer no longer could see the s video crt connection...makes no sense. Will report in later as to what I discover up at b&h as I'm sure there's a world of people out there using this sony crt monitor still even into the upgrades with computers and software so I imagine therein lies the solution. Thanks again and I'll report in as to what hardware might be suggested for me.

  • New Mac Mini and suitable monitor

As I have a MacBook Pro and iMac, I'm thinking of buying the top Mac Mini and using it with an hdmi monitor.  What concerns me, and is vital, is that the image I'm going to be looking at is as good as it can be.  Obviously the Mac Display Monitor is absolutely brilliant, but my budget doesn't run to that.  Has anyone got any direct experience they can share over purchasing, say a Samsung with hdmi etc, and the image quality it delivers?

Are you interested in a TV monitor or a computer monitor  ?
I have a Dell U2412M (24 inch) monitor, does not have HDMI, but hooked up both to try out, a Mini Displayport to Displayport cable and later a DVI to DVI/HDMI adapter cable and both of them worked just fine.  The monitor cost me $299.00 on sale at the Dell Business site, but looking around you can get it for slightly less.
MacMini 2011 has both a HDMI input and Displayport input

  • Mac Mini Server - No Monitor - Can't purchase HD Movies

I have a Mac Mini Server in a closet that has no monitor.  I screen share from a MacBook Pro to use it, and it's the primary iTunes account I access from my AppleTV 2.  Because the ATV2 doesn't allow purchases of movies, I have to go to the Mini and buy from the iTunes store.  Problem is, when I Screen Share in to make the purchase (HD), it won't let me buy/play because I don't have an HDCP compliant monitor connected.

Do you have the latest update for I tunes? I see HD on my I Mac and 1st gen. Apple tv

  • Display for Mac mini - HDTV or monitor?

    Hi folks
Just got a brand new Mac mini - went to PC World yesterday to get a new display - while there wondered if I shouldn't just get an HDTV instead of a monitor.  Asked for a bit of advice from one of the sales assistants and was told that they were virtually the same - same refresh rates, etc - with no discernible difference in quality.
I opted for a 24" full HD model made by Logik, PC Worlds own brand.  When I get it home and set up via the HDMI port, the image is terrible - white fuzzy hazing round text, colours seem dull, objects lack definition and edge.  I've tried just about every setting in System Preferences>displays ( 1080p, under scanning , etc) but still the image quality is bad.
Was I advised badly - is there a difference between HDTVs and monitors.  Should I have bought a monitor in the first place ?  If so, any recommendations?  I'm looking for something around 22"-26"
    Thanks in advance
    Doug

That's a shame.  I set one up for a neighbour this week and she got a cracking picture with a cheap 22" monitor via an rgb to hdmi adapter lead.
I presume that you have gone into System Preferences (that's clicking on the small black Apple logo) top left hand corner of the screen, and scroll down to System Preferences. and then Displays.   You'll then see Display / Color.
Then try one of the options presented to you in the list and see if you can find one that gives you the High Resolution you seek.  Good luck!

  • Connecting Mac Pro to Dell monitor

I have connected Macpro to Dell DVI monitor, the Dell will show the Mac home screen, but stays on that screen when i change to a different screen (on Mac)?

You have it set up as an extended desktop rather than mirroring. That means you can drag a window from your MBP onto that monitor. It's like an extension of the existing monitor. If you want mirroring, which shows the same on both, go to Displays in System Preferences and change it.

  • 2011 Mac Book Pro Dual Monitors - what's better, a small TV or LED monitor?

I have a new 15" Mac Book Pro with thunderbolt. I am setting up for some Final Cut editing, and was looking into a second monitor for full screen preview.
What is ideal??? Mini display port out via HDMI or should I go with mini to DVI?
If HDMI is fine, then what is the difference between using a LCD television and using a PC monitor?? Costco has a Samsung 27" 1080p LCD TV and a Samsung 27" monitor with HDMI for roughly the same price ($250).
Any opinions what would work better?
The monitor may occasionally double as a TV or be pulled onto a shoot as a camera monitor, in which case, maybe the LCD TV is better. It also will be used as a full screen preview monitor for Aperture still photo editing.
    Thanks

    >>  You need a broadcast signal going to the HDTV from the MBP.  <<
Are you saying that if you want to use the TV to evaluate the broadcast quality of the video then the MBP does not have that capabilty?
Are you also saying that if you just want to display the video on the TV then you can use the HDMI output of the MBP?
