Mac OS 10.3.9 can't read new Fantom Drive external disc.

I have a Fantom Drive with Firewire & USB 2.0 capabilities. I use it to back up my MacBook Pro (OS 10.5.8). My MacBook Pro reads the drive without any problem when I hook them up. My wife’s MacBook (OS 10.5.2) also reads it. The problem I have is with my older PowerBook G4 (OS 10.3.9) — it can't read ("mount") the drive. When I connect the PowerBook G4 with the drive I get the following message: “You have inserted a disk containing no volumes that Mac OS X can read. To continue with the disk inserted, click ignore.” I click “ignore” and nothing happens. The other two options are “initialize” and “eject.” Obviously, I don’t want to initialize the disk because that would erase the contents. The Fantom Drive is supposedly compatible with Mac OS 10.2.x and higher.
When I queried Fantom Drives tech support I received this reply:
The drive is working fine. Your OS on the 10.3 machine simply cannot read the file system on the drive. Most likely you’re using a file system that is supported on 10.5.x, but not 10.3.x. Apple or Apple enthusiasts may have some software that would enable you to circumvent this limitation, but we cannot offer any guidance here.
Are there any "Apple enthusiasts" out there who can advise me on this?

You would have to do a little research to see if reformatting the
external drive with the older OS X's disk utility could provide a
format scheme that both the newer Intel-based Mac & its kind
of format, as well as the older PPC Mac which uses a diffferent
kind; could both use. Actually, depending on use, the partition
mapping may be the root of the problem. Or something else.
Or if the drive is used only for storage and not sharing between
the computers, some users would use a mapping scheme that
would not allow an otherwise bootable external drive (such as
some use with a clone and a boot copy of the OS X) feature to
exist in that drive.
Depending on the purpose and intent of both computer types
with the external drive, there are variable choices in format.
Even a Fat-32 windows format can support storage; just like
a USB Flash drive ships with by default.
So, when you decide what format and future use the new
drive may see between those two computers, then choose
to reformat the drive so either one or both can use it. But,
if the external drive does support bootable OS X clones,
and you decide to use it that way, the new Intel Mac needs
a different mapping scheme than the older. GUID for new,
APM for the old; and HFS+ formatting for Mac OS, default.
Of course, I would do further research into this matter and
decide what future use the device may have, and with what
computer (and how.)
The older G4 Macs generally can't boot from a USB drive,
and so they'd prefer a FireWire enclosure for their HDD.
The USB speeds are sometimes too slow for best use in
the older Power PC Mac. That is a matter of consideration.
If the Mac uses USB1.1 data storage could be slow if an
external drive was used to save large files to, & retrieve.
The external, if the Apple Partition Map were used, and
the drive reformatted to HFS+ this could be used for
both kinds of Mac computer for storage. Since the drive
is in a USB enclosure, it can't be used for PPC booting
even though that format (APM) supports it otherwise.
Sometimes, an older disk utility may not give the same
options in disk tool availability than a newer one; so
when choosing to change the external drive's format &
other schemes, check into what the newest OS X's
Disk Utility offers; the older 10.3.9 one may be OK for
the basic APM kind of partition map & reformat HFS+
for storage uses. System booting for Intel-Macs in
USB2.0 may be possible; booting Macs in FireWire
may be problematic if the chipset does not support it.
And a self-powered external hard drive enclosure with
its own AC Adapter is better for use with boot volumes.
{Generally, Disk Utility in Mac OS X can do the main job.}
Good luck & happy computing!
PS: while there may be a way to partition free space in a
drive, without erasing content, the partition mapping may
be something so root-level as to not be possible to change
it without losing the existing content on that drive, to do it.

    Network Drive? a NAS?

What "app cleaner software" ? I ask because installing Photoshop over a previous version has never been a problem. Perhaps your difficulty stems from another source, eg. "cleaner software" ?
If you look in your hard drive, at the root level there is a Library. In there is a folder called Application Support, and in that you will find a folder called Adobe. Files from your previous version are there.
However, I urge you to call Adobe support to make sure you are not doing anything that would mess up other Adobe applications.

I recently purchased an old iMac G3 Macintosh. I was wondering, is there a way where I can update it without using an external disc? I've seen the newer Apple products with the dock, if I update my iMac G3, will it have that, and if so, how can I do that?

I was wondering, is there a way where I can update it without using an external disc?
If you mean the iMac does not have an internal optical drive capable of reading DVDs, the only option requires another Mac with a DVD-capable drive and FireWire ports. Your iMac G3 will also require FireWire ports. Not all G3 iMacs have Firewire. FW started with the Summer 2000 models with 400mHz and faster processors.
With FireWire, you can use FireWire Target Disk mode to install from a retail OS install DVD in another Mac. If you supplemental info info tells us if you have another Mac with a DVD reader and the FW ports, we can walk you through the process.
If the iMac has a tray-loading drive, I'd forget it. They are very limited not only in the OS max (10.3.9) but also in RAM capability. Starting with the slot-loading iMac G3s, the max RAM increased to 1 GB (2 X 512MB modlules). Tiger likes 1GB RAM.
Understand that pre-Intel Macs are getting harder to use. Even with 10.4.11, your choice of browsers is limited (TenFourFox is the most viable option) and the G3s  rudimentary video hardware means web browsing will be choppy at best.
If you are in the USA, you can try calling the Apple Store (1-800-MY-APPLE) for an OS disk. As recently as Jan 20, someone posted here that they were able to buy Tiger by calling. It was not clear whether the disks were replacement system install/restore disks or full retail install, but it's a free call.
When you do "About this Mac" to check teh OS verion, also look at the processor speed and tell us what that says. That can help with recommendations for an upgrade path.

  • My G4 can't read the printer driver disc of my BRAND NEW HP All-in-One

I am tearing my hair out on this one. I had an older HP AIO that died on me yesterday, so I ran out and bought a spanking new version, the C4280. I don't recall having any problem setting up the older printer (a psc 1315) and I can't remember whether I installed the driver from the disc or the website. Anyway, I got to Step 11, connected the USB cord as instructed, put in the disc, and my little mushroom whirred in a whisper for about 30 seconds, then spat out the disc. I tried again, unplugged, rebooted, yadda yadda, every config. I could think of, and I still got the whhrrrrwhirrrr, SPIT. I called HP and the 4280 is so new they don't have the drivers up on the website yet, so the very nice Canadian techie verfied that yes, there was only one CD for both Windows AND Mac, and yes, my G4 could read other CDs (my LaCie)--but strangely enough NOT the printer driver for the original psc 1315, which got the same whirrrr-SPIT treatment. So either I originally got the driver off the website, or my G4 has lost some critical cells since then. Now I have occasionally had trouble reading commercial DVDs--I get told they're a blank disc. But I never even made it to that stage with this printer driver disc.
The upshot is they are FedExing me a new printer driver disc tomorrow, this one apparently made especially for MACs. But I'm nervous because of what happened when I tried to put the old psc 1315 driver disc in.
    Any thoughts?

  • Can't read new messages in IN folder

This is similar to Spirelli's problem "Can't read messages in sent folder" of 28 August except the problem is with newly downloaded mail. Any unread mail (even from days or weeks ago read as: +The message from "Fae Gleisner" <[email protected]> concerning “SUBJECT OF EMAIL” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it.+
This happens after MAIL (1.3.11) has been open for a while (sometimes for only a few minutes; somestimes for an hour. The only way to read the messages is to QUIT MAIL and then re-open it.
This happened a few months ago and then mysteriously corrected.
In Mail > Preferences > Accounts, Special Mailboxes tab at Sent, and see what it reports for, Erase copies of sent messages when: is set for NEVER.
    Thanks, Robert

And again, if this is a POP account, you probably have the problem described in the following article:
    Overstuffed mailbox is unexpectedly empty
If you’re just starting to experience the problem, doing what the article suggests might work. If you’ve let the problem to become worse over time, however, it may be too late to solve it as described in the article. Post back with your observations.

  • Can I read mail on an external hard drive without importing the account?

HI - I have a large mail account on an external hard drive which i do not want to import on my mac due to hard drive space limitations.  Can I review the mail within the Mail app, (or some other app) without importing everything into mail or onto my hard drive?  Thanks very much!!

    Hi Paint Guy,
    *Bootcamp on External Hard Drive?*
Can I install Bootcamp on an external Hard Drive? I don't see why it wouldn't work. Do I need to install the Mac OS on the external Hard Drive first, then Bootcamp?
By Microsofts Design no Windows can be installed and booted from external HDs. BootCamp just follows this.
However, according to this http://tubeshards.wordpress.com/2006/12/05/install-windows-to-a-macintosh-usb-dr ive/ it can be done.
    Parallels
Another question. Does Parallels allow you to not have to use the "option" key to boot into Windows? I mean if I use Parallels can I use XP or Vista at the same time as my mac applications?
What, (if any) are the drawbacks to using "Parallels"?
Parallels is an OS X application which don't need a restart of your Mac to run Windows.
Therefor you can run OS X and Parallels Windows side-by-side.
Main drawback is, that Windows runs not native (on the real hardware) but in a virtualized environment.
While this is more than acceptable for 'standard' Office programs, any program that needs direct hardware access (especially games and 3D-programs) either do not run at all or run at noticeable slower speed.
Also you have to realize that the amount of RAM in your Mac is divided between OS X and Parallels Windows.
    *What Options are there...*
Is it possible for Apple to allow users to program a key on their keyboard, when pressed will bring up Windows so they don't have to always restart? I need to switch between Windows and mac OS quite often and it's a real pain to always restart. What options do I have?
BootCamp is no option then, since it needs a reboot everytime you want to switch between OS X and Windows.
Parallels (and VMWare Fusion and VirtualBox, BTW) run alongside OSX.
    Thanks
    You're welcome. Hope it helps.
    Have Fun

  • Can I start new hard drive set up again?/time machine info missing!

Hi, hoping for some guidance as I think I've made a mistake with my new hard drive set up, and now my time machine hasn't transferred everything over as I've folders missing!
My hard drive packed up & a new 10.6 was installed on my Macbook Pro.  Previously running on 10.5.8 which was backed up to time machine 3 week ago.  I switched on and went through the 'set up assistant' but when asked 'Would you like to inherit (or reuse) the backup?' I think I chose 'Don't backup now'  because I thought I could do my time machine later!  I now know I have chosen the hard route!!
Then I tried the 'migrate assistant' - it took 1.5hrs - desktop has screen shots etc as before but I couldn't access thing like 'my pictures' in bridge etc. The dock has LR, PS, Bridge etc as before too.  Then I deleted the new admin set up (so I had only my old admin.)  I restarted - no change.  I then tried 'migration assistant' again but transfered only 'Other files and folders' because when all ticked there wasn't enough room (-81gb)
Now I can go into LR catalog it only has 2 folders (instead of more than 20), and in Bridge I have files & folders, but on accessing them I get 'Items could not be found. It may of been moved or renamed.'
I've looked into erase & install - but I don't have the disc. Maybe I should go back to the shop who installed 10.6?  Can I start again so I can transfer from time machine in the set up?
Any advise on how I can get my info back would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks, Heather

I have the same problem, but it is happening with various USB drives including an iphone. If I have any of these connected via a USB hub to the MacBook Pro, they mount and operate fine until I attempt to copy large files to them. Randomly, during large file transfer, the drive will suddenly disappear and I'll get the same error as if I had yanked out the USB cable without unmounting it.
    This is happening with:
    * A standard (Lacie) powered 500GB USB drive mounted normally.
    * A standard (Lacie) powered 500GB USB drive being used as a Time Machine disk (it errors/unmounts during Time Machine backups).
    * An iphone 8GB during itunes syncs, only when copying large files (like videos).
I have tried two USB hubs, one powered and one not, and both cause the same problems. If I connect any of these drives/iphone directly to the Mac then they work absolutely fine.
I first thought the (unpowered) USB hub was to blame, but when I started using the powered USB hub and saw the same problems I'm starting to wonder if OS X has a bug with regards to heavy I/O to USB devices connected through hubs...?
Davros: my tip would be to connect the drive directly to the computer (not via USB hub) and see if the problem goes away.

  • Satellite A660-07U - Can't install new display driver

When I first got my laptop it wouldn't even boot out the box! So I googled the way to get it up and running and it wouldn't install Windows 7 32bit, so I installed Windows 7 64bit and that worked.
I am one of the users who is also having their laptop freeze on them constantly. I have done the Bios update and it is still doing it. So I decided to try updating the graphics drivers with the new ones from this website, but it seems they wont install. I got the Windows 7 64bit drivers first as I have Windows 7 64bit installed in my laptop. But it says it cant find the required hardware, I figured its because my laptop is not a 3D version, should that even matter?
So I then tried the 32bit drivers and it says im using wrong system os for those drivers.
So how about some drivers I can use?

    Hello
    > it didn't work out the box
Why it didnt work? What problems you had exactly?
    > The X64 drivers for download will NOT work on my A660, says something about not the right hardware (which is where I got the 3D idea from)
Well, in my opinion it has nothing to do with 3D support. If you can find new driver updates for Satellite A660 they should work because they are tested by Toshiba.
As far as I know there is no A660 model with 3D support, thats only available on A665.
Fact is that 32bit drivers never work on 64bit operating systems. So just forget this point.
Satellite A660/07U seems to be an Australian model and belongs to PSAW3A series. On the Australian page there is only one display driver available for Windows 7 64bit
What you can try is the display driver from European page where you can find a similar model PSAW3E:
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com
On this page I could found two driver version: 260.51 and 189.58. As far as I know latter one works properly without freeze.
    > You could have just said you don't know the answer or are you always this condescending?
You want some help or not? ;)
I mean I also didnt know that you are still use the Windows 7 installation from Toshiba, you only wrote about new Windows 7 installation.
    Anyway, it was simple misunderstanding.

  • Satellite L650-1M0 - CAN'T install new display driver

    Hello!
I have Toshiba Satellite L650-1M0 and i CAN'T install new drivers to my graphic card: Mobility Radeon HD 5650 from the AMD site. Why i cannot do it? I want to install the latest display drivers because i have problems with display mode. My laptop is set on 16:9 but some programs display in 4:3.
Please give the latest drivers on the Toshiba site or tell me what should i do to download drivers from AMD site. I have Windows 7 64x ;).

    >Why i cannot do it?
Im really wondering you are asking something like this. It is well known that support for mobile units (notebooks) is offered by notebook manufacturer and not by hardware manufacturer.
Due to specific notebook design and limited cooling performance graphic card cannot be upgraded as on graphic cards designed for desktops. New driver means more performance. More performance means more heat and result can be graphic card damage or switch-offs because of critical hardware temperature.

  • Follow up to HD crash - Install disk can't see new Hard Drive !!!

I may have a bigger problem on my hands.
I rebooted with my original install disk of OS X and when it gets to the "choose location" window, it does not see the new hard drive......????
I'm thinking about re-checking connections and/or possibly pull the hard drive out and do an external connection just to verify that it spins.
Not sure how to proceed and/or what to check ?? Suggestions ???

Make sure you chose the right format, and as far as partitioning in concerned, you have to select at least one partition, which will be the entire drive.

  • Hp 6310y can't get new hard drive to load windows 7

    model 6310y -- Windows 7 home premium 64 bit
My desktop PC stopped working.  I took it to local computer store and they said it was HD.  I bought new hard drive and tried to install retail Windows 7 home premium 64 bit OS.  I got an error message Code 0x80070002.
I called HP support....they told me I needed their brand of recovery discs because the motherboard or BIOS wouldn't allow me to install Windows 7 on the new replacement HD w/o it being their (HP) discs.  So I ordered them...$17
I bought another new HD and tried to install Windows 7 OS with the HP recovery discs.  This time got Error Code 0xe0ef000e.
I should mention both times trying to install OS on new replacement HD...it got approx 8 to 12 minutes into installation before getting error messages.
I called HP support....this time was told that the retail version of Windows 7 OS should have worked and that I didn't need the HP brand recovery discs when installing new replacement HD.   They offered me to pay $199 and send them my desktop to fix it....all inclusive fix.
Very confused.  I have never encountered anything like this before...I've had mulitple hard drives die over the years and have replaced them myself and installed all the software including OS myself w/o any problems like this.
Memory checked out ok when utilizing the diagnostics f9 key .... it did show problems with HD during one of my many diagnostic attempts
Not sure if its a bad motherboard or built in video card ..... not sure how to find out either....since I can't get the PC up and running
It will boot to blue HP screen & most of time won't allow me to get into f10, f9 or esc screens.
Not sure if its worth paying $200 to fix this or go and buy a new one for around the same price.
any suggestions or help is appreciated
    thanks

    View Solution.

    1) A retail OS should have worked.  That particular motherboard's NVidia Sata controller chip had a bad batch. You need to make sure the hard drive is recognized in the BIOS. If not, nothing can be done.
    2) Their brand of recovery disks was wrong, and was acknowledged. What about your $17 ??
If you had either a retail OS, or the recovery Disks that you made, these are acceptable.
The HP version when used with a new hard drive require conditioning "CyberLink Recovery Discs utility resolves an issue where Recovery Discs sent from HP do not work on a new hard drive".

  • Mac Book Pro 15" mid 2009 after installing new hard drive and 8 gb memory, start up disk is still full, start up from power off is very slow, and programs open immediately after start up EX. word, excel.  Help?

I installed a new 1tb WD hardrive in my mid 2009 macbook pro along with upgrading from 4gb to 8 gb.
My start up disk is still almost full, booting up is extremely slow, and programs open up by themselves once booted up ex:word, excel.
New TB drive shows up alng with 8 GB but, new hard drive not updating somehere?  What am I missing?  See screenshots below

Thanks for the response, but I'm looking for answers to a few of the other answers before I look at completeing the steps above.
    1.  Whyis the new TB drive recognized in image 1 but still have the original 256GB size still recognized(and almost full) in image 1 also?  The HD should now be 1 TB, not 256 correct?  If this were the case, the HD, would only be fraction of full capacity,  Where is the disconnect between reconizing the installed tb HD but, it not being used?
2.Image Number 2 shows once again that the new tb internal HD is recognized.  However, in image 3, the HD 256GB drive is still shown underneath the new HD.  Does this show that I am misssing something, some step, related to confirming the new HD should be fully reconized instaed of this old 256 that still remains?
    3.  In image 4, the SATA heading, shows the TB hardrive,  However, in image 5, the 256GB drive is still being shown under the storage heading?  Once again, seems like I've missed some simple step to make this all the same?
4.Why is the start up from boot up soooo slow now.  I was never even close to this slow(slower than PC startup slow) before the new HD was installed.  IS this common when updraging to a new HD?  Doesn't seem right?
    5.  Why now all of a sudden when the computer finally boots up are certain programs automatically opening up, word, excel, when they have never opened up like this before?
Summary:  1. New memory issues, 2. Very slow start up, 3.  Programs opening up automatically at startup.
Until I address these issues, I'm not going to worry about loking through and deleting heavy folders.
