Mac os 10.3.9 emulation in 10.4 or later.

I have a program that runs in 10.3.9, but was not written to run in later os 10.4 etc. I cant upgrade my mac to run all the other software that will work in 10.4 and must keep this mac as a dedicated machine for this one program. Anyone hav a fix or idea of how to run this program within 10.4?Thanks.

Hi, rtiste, and welcome to Apple Discussions. Install OS X 10.3.9 on an external FireWire hard drive or a second partition on your internal drive, and boot into it instead of 10.4.x when you need to run the program in question.

I am having a tough time trying to find a decent Mac-to-Unix emulator. I know there's got to be a few options out there. Any suggestions?

    Hi--
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
I'm not sure what you mean by "Mac-to-Unix emulator." These days, the Mac pretty much is Unix. But if it's specifically SCO-ANSI support in a terminal program you're looking for, you might try dataComet. I've never heard of it, but it's about the only thing kicked up by Google.
The only other suggestion I can think of is to see if you can get xterm, which comes as part of X11 for OS X to emulate the SCO-ANSI terminal. The X11 installer is on one of the CDs/DVDs that came with your Mac.

Note that Apple's Software License Agreement (SLA) only allows using OSX on Apple branded hardware.  So unless the "Windows PC" is a Mac with Windows in Boot Camp, what you're asking for is not allowed, so can't be discussed on these forums since that would be a violation of the Terms of Use of these forums.  You'll have to go looking for "Hackintosh" info elsewhere.

You cannot install Lion on a Mac with 10.5 Leopard, only a Mac with 10.6 Snow Leopard. The only way to get Lion on your Mac with Leopard is to put the Lion installer on a USB thumb drive/ext HDD, completely erase the HDD of your Mac with Leopard and then install Lion on the empty HDD with the Lion USB thumb drive. The problem with this is that you will loose everything on the Mac when you erase it unless you have a backup somewhere.

Hi! I was the unlucky recipient of the Troj/JSDldr-V "iTunes" trojan (turns itunes German, for starters). It arrived via a FedEx email that was in my Spam folder and somehow unleashed when I moved Spam to trash. (I saw a fake itunes update, clicked the red circle to close which might have been the trigger). Anyhoo, I am perplexed as to how to remove. My Sophos found it and isolated it afterwards, but has been unable to remove it as iTunes is already compromised - and everything being in German or faux German, I'm not about to enter any info as it cleverly prompts for admin user name and password. Sneaky buggers! I have perused forums and found it is likely spyware, but have been unsuccessful at finding how to remove for Mac (Sophos found threat, can't remove it). Running a 2011 late model Macbook Pro, 10.9.5. Any support would be GREATLY appreciated. I'm broke (as in homeless broke) and even if I had money, the nearest Apple store is a five hour drive away - a tad inconvenient and inaccessible. :-(  Karma points for helping, though! And I always pay it forward!

  • Can I use my Mac OS 9 emulator (classic mode) with OS 10.5 Leopard?

    Hello,
This was the closest forum I could find to ask this question so please forgive me if it's not categorized properly.
I'm currently running OS 10.4 Tiger on my Mac and my OS 9 emulator works great. I've heard rumors that if I upgrade to OS 10.5 Leopard I can no longer use the OS 9 emulator and/or it will be eliminated all together. Can anyone clarify this for me?
I still use quite a few OS 9 applications, much less some older games which I really enjoy and do not want to lose the use of 'classic mode'. I would actually reconsider upgrading if I were to lose the use of it.
I've heard there's a workaround by using SheepShaver, but I've read a lot of mixed reviews on it so I'm hesitant to go that route should I decide to upgrade since everything is working so well with my current configuration. I'd like to take advantage of the new features in Leopard, but I don't think it's worth the sacrifice if I lose 'classic mode' by upgrading.
Any information/clarification would be much appreciated. Thank you.

    Hi, lancisti -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
First, a point of clarification - OS 9 used as Classic is not an emulator program. SheepShaver is an emulator, but Classic is not. When OS 9 is used as an Operating System, it is referred to as OS 9; when used as a program under OSX to provide an environment in which many OS 9 programs can be run, it is referred to as Classic.
Unfortunately, Leopard (OSX 10.5) does not support OS 9 in any form, including Classic. There is no workaround supported by Apple for this.
As far as non-Apple workarounds go, SheepShaver is one approach, as you are aware. And, as you note, whether it works well, at all, or not seems a bit whimsical based on some users' reports. This may have something to do with SheepShaver not yet being ready for Leopard - that's purely a guess on my part.
Another solution would be to partition your hard drive, or add a second one, so that you can have a volume dedicated to OSX 10.4.x, which does support Classic and would allow you to continue using it. Or, since your machine is OS 9 bootable (using the model-specific version of OS 9.2.2 that came with it, and is installable from the machine's original disk set), set that additional volume up as an OS 9 boot volume.

  • A definitive answer? : Can you use Audition on a Mac??!

I have heard all sorts of conflicting views on this and I thought someone here would be able to set the record straight! I wanted to get a Mac, because I like them, but I use Audition all the time for my work. Is a Mac a good idea? If not, could anyone recommend the best sort of laptop to get if you're going to be doing a lot of audio editing (for radio).
    Thanks a lot!
    Rachel

Hey - I've just signed up to get the benefit of the experience & wisdom of audio experts. It looks like I can expect plenty of that so thank you in advance.
From this thread, seems like I can also get some opinion without much basis in fact and outright paranioa too. Just an observation and not a criticism - I have my own foibles to bring to the party too  ;-)
    here's some facts from me.
I run and work in an environment of mixed Windows and Macs - initially, around 30 Windows audio workstations and a handful of Macs. I've been here since the days of analogue tape; my first audio editor was Cool Edit on Windows 3.11.
The cheaper purchase price of the Win machines is soon offest by the much higher cost of maintenance, repair and replacement. Windows workstations need replacing after 3 years - some of them will have broken beyond repair in that time. The Macs are on a five year replacement program - but they often run longer than that. Yes, Macs break down but nowhere near as much as the Win PCs. This is true for towers and laptops. I refuse to buy any more Win laptops as even the best brands fail so quickly. I now by mac laptops and often they're used in Windows only. Last year we replaced 20 Win workstations with dual boot Macs so we now use both OS's side by side. We only still run Windows because Audition is our audio tool of choice.
Macs do not get viruses. Period. We have no virus or malware protection measures on the Mac side and we have no problems. Zero. We've had massive virus issues on the Windows side, particularly spread by USB memory sticks. With later versions of XP and now 7, it's got a lot better but we still have to run extra software (that slows down performance) on Windows and spend a lot of time updating definitions etc. This is a high cost and should be factored into cost considerations.
Macs are suspecptible to trojans of course - but not as much as Win. There are simply fewer of them and the OS is implemented in an inherently more secure way. That said, if some plonker is going to open dodgy email attachments or going clicking around 'exotic' websites, then they are effectively inviting the vampire over the threshold- whatever the OS and hardware! But Macs do not 'catch' viruses like Windows.
I've been running Audition on my Mac laptops for years under emulation and straight Windows - since Windows 98 SP2. I'm writing this on a five year old MacBook Pro - it's a laptop and it gets hammered and carried everywhere daily in a tatty padded bag. On it I run Audition 1.5 under Parallels (XP), happily getting sound in and out, using a variety of internal and external sound cards (FW & USB). There was once a problem with an M-Audio driver but it was fixed next update and none since. As it's one of the earliest ones, it's maxed out at 2GB RAM and it has the standard 5200 rpm hard drive & 2.16 Core Duo (note: mine's not a Core 2 Duo, which is the current spec and much faster), so you can see it's way below the current models' spec. If I'm doing a big project in Audition with lots of resources running, I use a dedicated modern desktop computer, but for my day in,day out work, my old laptop copes well. I tried Audition 3 on it and it seemed to work ok but the licence was for another machine so I didn't test it in anger. Two people I know with recent Macbook Pros run Windows & Mac OS together and I'm amazed at the ease and speed of them. When my employer allows me, I hope to upgrade to one of those but as long as this old faithful keeps going, I've no chance.
If I had my personal choice it would be Mac all the way - not because it's perfect, but cos it's the better option. But I know and work with people whose knowledge and experience I respect who think the same about Windows. We get on well together.
BTW, the information from someone about one button mouses is a decade or more out of date. With my mac I use the trackpad (which gets 'right-clicks' & more) and often a two button+scroll wheel Microsoft mouse. If we're going to help each other out today, lets not talk ancient history.
I'm about to make more purchases for streaming audio on the web. I'll be installing Audition on these, of course. I'll probably be buying Windows computers to do this because the start budget is too small. But I'll expect to be replacing these in a couple of years and I know from experiecne they'll be less reliable than a Mac tower that would cost almost twice as much. That's a false economy and false efficiency in my view, but it's a strategic choice and it will work well till it breaks.
To summarize, so far I've found no perfect solutions to computer based audio issues - all setups will have their problems. But it is both possible - and to me prefereable - to run Audition on current Macs. And while the initial purchase price of Mac options looks expensive, the total cost of ownership is probably at least equal if not less - but the experience along the way is much less troublesome, more productive and happier.
Enjoy your audio editing whatever it's on.

  • Mac OS 8.6 and Mac OS 7.6 - Older Game Software - Need Help!

I am new owner of an iMac OS X 10.4.8 system and have children who are wanting some educational games software games for Christmas- I have found some on E-Bay (ie. Where In the World is Carmen San Diego) however, the requirements are OS 8.6–9.2, OS X.
In addition I would like purchase Emergency Room 3 by Legacy Interactive with the following requirements: MacOS 7.6 or later, 233MHz PowerPC or faster cpu, 32MB RAM, 16 bit color display, 16X or faster CD-ROM .
Question: If I purchase these games - will they operate properly on my Mac OS X (10.4.8)? Should I be prepared to experience any issues?
Hate to open them on Christmas morning and they not work.
    Please advise.
    Thanks in advance.

I have a lot of kids' software on CDs, bought over several years, and have since upgraded almost all the Macs to OS X.
On the slightly older G3, G4, or G5 Macs that preceded yours, when you tried to run CD software that was not OS X aware, it would cause the Mac to launch "Classic" -- an emulation of many (but not all) of the features of OS 9. That made most of the well-behaved CD software completely happy.
But my Macs can all still run Classic. Your Intel Mac can NOT run Classic.
Many vendors software requires the CD to be in the drive, but install a portion of the program onto the Hard Drive the first time it is run. It is therefore essential that the Administrator account is the one to first run the program. (If you have not already set up separate accounts for each of your kids, please do that now, even if you do not password them.)
If a CD says "OS X" it generally requires Mac OS X 10.2 or later, and will work fine on your Intel Mac.
If a CD says "OS 8.6–9.2, OS X" That means it requires a minimum of 8.6, but will also run under 9.1 or 9.2 or Classic or Mac OS X. Sometimes these programs will install a slightly different Hard Drive resident portion if installed under Mac OS X. If the program gives you a problem, the vendor's web site may set you straight with a quick download, which will modify the Hard Drive portion of the software to solve the problem.
If a CD says "7.6.1 or later", "8.5 or later", "9.1 or later" it has not acknowledged the existence of Mac OS X, and will not run on your Intel Mac. That is why the suggestion of getting a slightly older used Mac is a perfectly reasonable one.
It has always seemed bizarre to me that great kids software still followed the same cycle as new games. An initial rush at high prices, a slowing and discounts, and then not being able to find it anywhere. Great stuff like Reader Rabbit, Carmen SanDiego series, and the ClueFinders series, should never really "go out of style."
I am hoping that the coming of the new Microsoft Windows Vista Operating System for PCs will encourage educational software developers to "freshen" their best software for that environment, and that as long as they have it apart they will fix it up to run under Mac OS X, if they haven't done it already.

    Kurt Lang wrote:
No Mac with an Intel CPU has ever supported Classic.
I take that back. We have an iMac Core 2 Duo, basically the same as yours. One of the few Mac models with an Intel CPU that shipped with its own Intel version of Tiger, which does indeed support Classic. Tiger was never available in the retail version for Intel Macs; PowerPC only.
So I'm guessing that yes, you are referring to old Motorola 680x0 Classic apps. There is no way to run them in Leopard or later, other than than a third party emulator like Sheepshaver. However, that is only the emulator. To get that to work, you need an Apple ROM, which is illegal for you to own unless you also own the exact same Mac the ROM is from. Beyond that, I've read many reports that it doesn't work all that well.
Kurt: This is the first I have EVER heard of an Intel Mac running Classic natively, without emulation (and I have done quite a bit of research)!  Please reconfirm that this is correct, and if you can reconfirm it correctness, you might want to let the researchers noted in the two links below know about these abilities.
Also, your statement regarding Mac ROMs is too broad and overly restrictive.  The emaculation link below indicates a method for extraction of Classic Mac ROMs from an active Apple download link for a ROMs update.  I just tried the link last night and it is still active.
I always caution those who make such legal pronouncements to exercise caution; as they tend to keep users from solutions that are otherwise legally available.  And I am sure that is not your intention:

and here is some additional information on SheepShaver:

I have had considerable success with SheepShaver, running this version of Risk II for the OP of a post on another forum as well as being able to access legacy MORE and WordPerfect files in my archives:

Can photoshop CS2 work on a Mac with OS 10.5.8 installed?  If not which versions work?

It may or may not work. CS and CS2 are not supported in Leopard. If its an Intel Mac CS2 must run in emulation mode(Rosetta) this can add another layer of problems. CS3 and CS4 are both supported in Leopard and on Intel Macs.
    Adobe no longer sells CS3.

If your old games are OS 9 programs, then they will not run on the Intel Macs. There is an emulator called SheepShaver (www.macupdate.com) that will run OS 9. Then there's the Mini vMac that emulates an old Mac Plus.
If it's a PPC application and doesn't work then it simply isn't compatible with Rosetta.

I purchased the design suite for PC but would like to install my second licensed download on a mac.  Can I do this?

Your Windows license might only be installed on a Mac if you install Windows emulation software.
While it might be possible to swap to the Mac platform, which depends on which version is involved, that means giving up the Windows license.

  • Programming for PC's on a Mac

Is the only way to create an .EXE application for PC's on a Mac is by using an emulator and running the programming language on that? When problems arise due to working on a PC with Windows/Drivers etc. they can get in the way due to unreliability. Any work on a Mac I have carried out has been complication free i.e. any errors are due to me! I have heard of Mac programmers creating PC software, but is using emulation the only way?

In addition to Daniel and Mark's excellent points in their posts, I'd add that if you stick to the standard VB language, w/o using WLLs, or calls to Windows API routines, you should (depending upon your needs) be able to write VB code that will work on both the Mac and Windows platforms. Some newer VB 6.0 functions like split and join  are not ported to the Mac version. Versions of these functions have been posted on the Web (by people moving up from VB4.x for example), so you can still use them by "rolling your own".
But, in the coding I've done in VB on the Mac, the parts of the language that is specific to the Mac is "ususally" indicated in the on-line VB help files. If you haven't already done so, I'd also recommend making sure you have the latest software patches installed from Microsoft for your version of Office (for Office X the latest is 10.1.6 ie. 6 patches have been released), since these patches have fixed some known problems in VB on the Mac.

    Hi,
Not being computer literate, I need help please. My son bought my husband a game called 'Empire: Total War' which is a Games for Windows DVD. When trying to install the game, the following message appears:
    Warning Mac Users
If you are attempting to run Steam and Steam games on a Mac computer with a Windows emulator, DO NOT use this process as your OS may no longer recognize your hard drive. Please consult Apple Support for instructions on safely converting your hard drive.
I have looked at the Apple Support pages but there is so much to wade through that I have given up and thought I would ask instead.
Does anyone know what I am supposed to do? I would be VERY grateful to hear from you.
    Many thanks,

Your Mac can install Windows on the hard drive, by setting aside and making spare for a Windows partition using Boot Camp and Boot Camp Assistant (in Utility folder, inside Applications).
    http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
Read the FAQ, and the PDF guide you cna print/save from inside Boot Camp Assistant.
I'd suggest planning on version of Windows, size of volume (depends on how much space is available), but first and foremost: BACKUP first. Then consider if it is worth all the effort. Or get a PC low end model just for gaming.

  • How do you apply a Blackberry Software Upgrade on Mac OS X Tiger or Leopard ??

Bell has issued a notice that all my blackberry users upgrade their software but they are all using Mac OS 10.4.11 Tiger or Leopard.
I understand that Blackberry Desktop Manager is windows-only software and Bell business support was unable to accomodate us.  Anyone out there able to do this without windows-emulation software ?  Is there Mac OS X compatible software coming in the future ? I need to advise users currently how to apply this and for the future can we stay tied to this as a mobile solution with no native software support ? Please advise any feasible workarounds ?

I really wish RIM would come out with a real BlackBerry Desktop equivalent for Mac, but right now I don't think there's any way you can do upgrades directly from your Mac without using Windows via emulation or BootCamp. Unfortunately, RIM's only official word about this that I can find is that upgrades are not supported on Mac (http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=KB13963). I use VMware for this.
Not exactly convenient, but maybe your carrier would do the upgrade for you at one of their stores.
