Mac OS 10.4.3 Sleep, Powerbook G4, Airport, External Display Problems
I am running Mac OS 10.4.3 on my G4 Powerbook, system spec as follows
Machine Model: PowerBook5,6
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.2)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 1.67 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 1 GB
Bus Speed: 167 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.9.1f1
Serial Number: XXXXXXXXXX
Sudden Motion Sensor:
State: Enabled
Version: 1.0
When the Powerbook is woken from sleep mode the airport crashes when using an external display. I have no idea why this is, but it seems from other threads, that the external display and airport are closely tied together, and I have also read that there are others who are experiencing some problems with the Airport. When this happens, I have to hard boot the machine as I can't forcequit or shut down the system from the menubar (this crashes too)
I have the following installed for my airport
2005-07-27 22:23:42 +1000: Installed "AirPort" (4.2
2005-11-12 12:00:12 +1100: Installed "AirPort Update 2005-001" (1.0)
Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme
Wireless Card Locale: Worldwide
Wireless Card Firmware Version: 404.2 (3.90.34.0.p16)
I am using an Apple 23" Cinema HD Display with the Apple ADC-DVI converter(previous model)
Can anyone help me with this problem?
Thanks
LucasK
I don't think the DVD is damaged since it worked fine on my old G4 desktop.
The reason I'm trying to reinstall OS 10.4 is because I have received the computer from a family member with all his files and data in it. I want to get rid of it all and start from scratch for my personal use - if possible. If not, I could settle for less.
I want to explain few issues if that helps. I first tried installing Mac OS 10.3 to my Powerbook running Mac OS 10.4.3. I put OS 10.3 CD, started computer with C key held down, and all that came up was gray screen with 1 inch black line to the left of the Apple logo, and remained there - never making it to the blue screen. I shut of the computer, took the Mac OS 10.3 out of the Powerbook, restarted without the CD, and the computer was back to the desktop.
Then I tried installing 10.4, which goes past the gray screen, and gets stuck in the blue screen. I ejected the 10.4 DVD, and computer was back to normal (to the desktop)
It sounds like you inserted the wrong or a damaged DVD and neither the installation nor erasure took place. In that case, let's get started again on the right foot.
Tell me why you want to erase your hard drive? Were you experiencing some technical issue, and if so what? Let's troubleshoot that situation with the least harmful method.

Mid 2010 Macbook Pro sleep and external display problem
I recently upgraded to the new 2010 15 inch core i7 Macbook Pro. The problem i have is that it will not detect an external display (23inch Cinema) after waking from sleep. This happens after using the display to extend the desktop and also when using the Macbook in closed mode.
I've managed to get it to detect the display only after either restarting the Macbook completely or by going into energy saver and switching to dedicated graphics then going back to detect display.
It seems that when on integrated graphics it doesn't register that an external display is connected. If i leave a program open and running that causes the dedicated graphics to kick in then it works ok. If i close all programs, shut the macbook pros lid, computer sleeps and external display shuts off. If i click the mouse to wake with lid closed, apple logo lights, machine starts up few seconds later macbook returns to sleep. If i open the screen the machine wakes as normal but the external monitor doesn't.
Any help is much appreciated as its starting to frustrate me now...
Many thanks
oh and im running OSX 10.6.3I thought it was intermittent to begin with until i started looking into it. By leaving programs open, like aperture, before i put the machine to sleep it appears to wake the external monitor up without a problem. If i shut all programs or leave basic things open like safari and mail which don't require the dedicated graphics, then upon wake it wont register an external screen is connected.
Manually detecting displays in settings doesn't work.
Disconnecting and reconnecting mini display port doesn't work.
Turning off power to cinema display and powering back up doesn't work.
To get the display going again its either 1) turn off macbook pro and re-boot or 2) re-start the machine then the display is automatically recognised. Or 3) launch a programme that kicks in dedicated graphics then manually go in and detect displays again..... like magic the display then springs to life.
No ideas anyone?? -
17" Powerbook G4 1.5MHZ Display problem
I have had this PBG4 for almost 4 years now and in the last couple of weeks, the display will start splitting into two horizontal displays. I use an external monitor at my office and have never had problems until late. The first time this happened, I just turned the machine off for an hour or so and it worked fine. This go round, I left it off for a few hours and it is still there.
Any suggestions?
ThanksHello,
I have the same problem since a few days It's random. I thought I solved the problem with a massive Onyx system cleaning but it came back. I'm afraid it's a hardware problem due to a fall on the pavement last month. But, the strange thing is that if it boots correctly, the display stays fine, even after a sleep/wakeup. It only happens after a cold start. Before opening the powerbook, I'm going to try a clean Mac Os X install. -
Powerbook monitor as external display for Macbook Pro
Hello,
I have a powerbook G4 and a newer Macbook Pro. Is it possible to use the display of the G4 as an external monitor for the MB Pro?
ThanksTry ScreenRecycler - seems like this will do what you need by tunneling through VNC instead of a direct video connection.

Sleep issue when using external display
I use my macbook(lid closed) with an external apple cinema 20" display. When I wish to put the computer to sleep, when I will not be using it for a while, I click on the sleep menu item either in the drop down finder menu or by clicking on sleep from the menu that appears when I touch the display button. I have had erratic reponse from doing this using both methods of putting the system to sleep. Sometimes the macbook goes into sleep mode and sometimes it turns the display and system back on after a short pause following the activation of the sleep button.
Do you use a wireless mouse or keyboard?
I had the exact same problem with both my mini and my old ibook G4. Try unplugging one peripheral at a time from your usb ports to pinpoint which (if any) is causing the problem. This can take a while if the problem is intermittant like you say! -
Not detecting external display after waking up MBP from sleep mode
I am a recent owner of a MBP and enjoying it. However, one problem that I can't seem to find a solution to is the external display problem after sleep mode.
When I first boot up the Mac and plug in my Dell external monitor via the mini adapter, there is no problem with detection or display. However, every time I put the MBP in sleep mode and then wake it up again, the external monitor does not "wake" up and my MBP only displays my normal screen on the Mac.
I tried to 'Detect Displays' to no avail and the only solution is unplugging the mini connection and plugging it back into the MBP for the MBP to re-detect the external monitor.
Although this is a quick fix in itself, I do not want to wear out the mini port by doing this every timeI come out of sleep mode. Any solutions so that the external monitor will detect the MBP waking up from sleep and display properly? Thanks! And same problem here.
Using a MBP 2.66 i7 with a Dell 3008WFP that's connected to the MBP through DisplayPort. It works some of the time but once in a while (only been using the new MBP for a couple of days now) the monitor won't come out of sleep mode. Turning it off/on causes OS X to completely ignore the monitor. I was able to get this setup to work again by pressing 'Detect Displays' in the System Preferences pane but most of the times that doesn't help. The only sure way to get the monitor working again is by booting into Windows through Bootcamp, Windows is able to use the monitor, if I reboot after that OS X sees the monitor again.
Also saw a magenta line/stripe on the left side of my monitor and the monitor sometimes makes a buzzing sound when connected to the MBP through DisplayPort. That's what you get by using bleeding edge tech I guess :\ Only alternative is buying the mini-DP to dual-DVI connector but paying $99 just to be able to use an external monitor is rather insane. Besides that lots of users are having problems with this adapter. -
External display lost after resume from sleep on Macbook 4,1
Hi, I'm connecting an external display (with a max res of 1920x1080) on a Macbook 4,1 early 2008 (graphics : Intel GMA X3100) with OS X 10.5.8.
It's connected with an official Apple MiniDVI>DVI converter and a DVI cable.
I had to reset the PRAM and SMC to have it detected.
It worked perfectly in mirror mode... until I put the macbook to sleep : on resume, the external display received no signal, and I could'nt detect it in "monitors / detect monitors".
I checked that SMC is up to date (1.31f1)
When I plug or unplug the DVI cable, or when I switch on/off the external monitor, the macbook's integrated display switches off for a second then switches on back, as if it were detecting something... but without any effect.
Any idea ?Hi Erwansj,
It sounds like you have done most of the steps in this article, but see if there are some other steps that help, like trying Safe Mode.

I cannot get the new mac mini to wake from sleep and trigger the displays - this is the second mac mini I have had and both have had the same issues. It worked before on my macbook extremely well...
Using 2 displays, connected via HDMI and thunderbolt
Been on to support a number of times now - is anyone experiencing the same issues?BUMP.
I actually showed this to Apple geniuses when I took my computer to the apple store, and it's still here. In console it says:
kernel[0]: Previous Shutdown Cause: -128
I don't know if that's related or not, but maybe helps? -
My mac mini keeps going to sleep
Ok my Mac mini is about 3 years old and well whenever I'm doing most anything It will make a noise as if running hard then turn itself on sleep and no Its not doing it due to inactivity cause after I turn it back on using the keyboard it puts itself to sleep within seconds again.
This problem is the worst while trying to watch any type of movie rather it be on DVD,Youtube,Apple Movie trailers, or OTHER.
PLEASE helps me ;_;Hi Yamivash 0-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple boards.
It sounds like it is overheating. Have you cleaned the air vents out lately?

After upgrading to Mac OS 10.6.8, sleep indicator light remains off when I start my 15" MB Pro, but the computer works, and when I put it to sleep, the light flashes as normally. Any suggestions?
Hi j,
An SMC Reset can fix some SIL issues. If everything is working fine . . . ? Anyway, it shouldn't hurt anything to try it if you want: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 -

My Mountain Lion mac crashes after resuming from sleep
Hello
My Mountain Lion mac crashes after resuming from sleep every time I use it
It happens every time the mac resumes from sleep and it started like a week ago
I remember installing the new updates for flash? and xquartz and nothing else.
I have also had microsoft word installed on my mac for about 1 weeks before this problem started so might be related to that
Please share with me any tips on how to fix this because I am really annoyed of losing stuff after each time my mac resumes from sleepI have an iMac bought may -11, and it worked fine with Snow Leopard.
About a week ago I bought and installed Mountain Lion 10.8.2. Everything went fine, and all software worked ok. iPhoto had some problems, but after installing update the system prompted to do, it has worked ok.
The propblem occurs now and then, when computer is waked up from sleep. The Desktop occurs, but no software starts, not even System Tools untlil rebooting the computer. Of course, I can not reboot the computer from "Apple menu", but holding the power button down.
This is very embarassing! OsX Mountain Lion has turned out to be a very big disappointment. I installed id because of iCloud (i have a new iPad, too with iOs 6 installed).
Can anyone help me? Is there any other way to solve the problem than re-installing good old Snow Leopard?
I would not like to do that, I bought Mac because I was bored in re-installing and recovering!
Thank you
