Mac OS 10.5.6 on SBS 2008 premium
Hi,
Am using a macbook running mac os 10.5.6 and trying to use on a active directory domain. I am new to mac and am finding difficult to do that. I tried a couple of tutorials found here and there but no luck..it finds the domain controller but i cannot login using my network credentials. I am the network administration so basically i can tweak the sbs as much as i want to get the mac to work lol...awaiting your suggestions guys if anyone has done this. please note that am using SBS premium 2008.

Mac OS 10.6 Server & Windows SBS 2008
Hi, I am looking for some suggestions on how best to deal with the following scenario.
We have a Windows 2008 SBS server which is running Sharepoint Services and Exchange 2007 for our business. We also have a Mac Mini Server which we would like to add to the network and use for file sharing/storage, iChat server and Wiki Server.
We currently have three users, all using Mac hardware running 10.6.8. We employ an MCP who is certified in SBS and I am currently an ACSP studying for my Mac Server Essentials 10.6 exam.
From my current knowledge and research I can see that we have 2 options:-
1 Join/bind the two servers together (AD-OD Magic Triangle), however I am concerned that this would be potentially beyond my current abilities, but would give complete integration between the two systems and allow us to add new Mac and Windows clients in the future.
2 Run the two servers on separate domains and duplicate the user information, binding to both domains separately from the clients. Easier to setup but would duplicate user info and could be trickier to add new users and Windows users.
So my question really is what would the more experienced people out there suggest, and have I missed an easier way?

As for expansion/future, we're a new IT support company, focussing on being able to support both Microsoft and Apple platforms. My personal goal is to get to ACSA level, which would include the Open Directory exam which I feel would help with what I am trying to achieve now. Our expansion in terms of the number of clients would almost certainly be using Mac clients and would be a maximum of 2 apprentices and 2 more engineers starting from 6 months time and spread over a 12 to 18 month period. I would imagine that by the time it would be beneficial to have the two domains fully integrated both myself and the Microsoft engineer should be at a level to make it work ourselves. For now I think that setting the two servers up and duplicating the users is the best option, and enables us both to continue training ourselves and supporting the business in the meantime.

I want to do something little bit strange..
Is it possible to install/run SBS 2008 Premium incl. SQL Server 2008 on a 2010 Mac Pro?
I successfully installed this OS on a late 2009 Mac Mini (2,5 Ghz - 8 GB RAM - 200 GB SSD) and so far it works fine.. although I already installed it yesterday.
But.. I want a little bit more performance, so I want to use the Mac Pro (16 GB RAM - SSD). The plan is to install the SBS 2008 on a Boot Camp Partition and use the Mac Pro only as a Windows Server.
Does anybody have any experience with this?

I just want to add what happened over the past few weeks.
Everything is fine!
Our SBS 2008 Server runs on a 2.8 Quad Core Mac Pro and everything seems to work correctly. What I didn't know before is that one can install an actual Windows-Version (not only Win7, but also SBS 2008) natively on a an 64-Bit Intel-Mac.
I formatted the drive as MBR (MasterBoot Record) and then did the normal installation process. During the install process I had to install the Ethernet-Driver manually for finishing the overall installation. After that there's only the installation for the BootCamp drivers left, which is important to use the correct driver for the graphics card, Apple keyboard and mouse etc.
Before that I've tested it with a 2009 MacMini and a Core i3 2010 iMac. And it worked, too. So, for the future I could only use Macs if I want to run Windows natively
In addition to the MacPro SBS 2008, I installed Windows 7 (32-Bit) natively on a 20" white iMac 2006, another license on a 2008 MacMini and a third license on a 2010 Core i3 iMac.
So far, everything is ok... love it

MarcoI've seen people run 2008 over on Mac Pro forum so it definitely can be done, though the Mini doesn't probably have EFI64 support for Windows 7 x64.

Using Mac Mail with SBS 2008 + Exchange 2007
Hi,
I'm having a nightmare trying to connect my Mac Mail to our mail server. We just got a brand new SBS 2008 server put in our office, but my Mac Mail doesn't want to connect.
Every time I try, it does show the Certificate, and when I click accept it trys to connect and gives this eror:
"The Exchange Server "myserver.local" doesn't have the minimum required version installed. To use Mail with Exchange, the server must be running Update Rollup 4 for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 or later. Contact your server administrator."
Obviously the myserver bit isn't the actual server, I just don't want to tell the world our server name.
The server has the required update, it actually has Update Rollup 10 installed as of today.
Any ideas?I think any poster who replys to their own post with something like, "Actually nevermind, I got it working." and leaves it at that despite requests for help, should be banned from ever posting on or visiting any forum on the internet for the rest of their life.

Macbook pro with OS 10.6.4 cannot join Windows SBS 2008 .local domain

I just had a windows SBS 2008 installed and it controls a .local domain where all my Windows7 PC's are connected to. I can access the internet wired/wirelessly but i cannot see any of the computers on the network at all, thus i cannot share files or share the printer which is connected to one of the local PC's.
I have read many threads indicating possible fixes but no one has been able to give me a permanent solution. Is this inability to connect my MAC to the SBS 2008 local domain fixable from my MAC or is it to be resolved from the SBS 2008 side? Any help would be greatly appreciated.Greetings,

While in SafeBoot install the combo update
Restart the computer to come out of SafeBoot
Try running software update again and see if it works.

Connecting remotely to SBS 2008
I've been reading a great many posts concerning similar issues, but none of them, nor responses quite fit the bill.
I'm running SBS 2008 with Remote Web Workplace enabled, etc. All Windows Client computers are able to access the server and networked machines perfectly well from outside the domain. Also, a VPN can be established via a Windows machine to the server and resources can be used remotely, as designed.
My Mac, running Leopard, can access the server using a vpn; that is, it gives me a "connected" message when I supply correct credentials and the IP of the internet domain name of the server. However, I am unable to access any network resources, nor can I use the Remote Desktop Connection for Mac provided by Microsoft.
The Remote Desktop app will attempt to connect but will issue a prompt to me that the connection was ended at the server end, or it will claim address does not exist. These are local domain addresses, as I am supposedly linked to the domain via VPN, but I'm making that up . . . However, if I am not linked to the vpn and utilize the internet domain name, the same thing occurs.
If I am connected to the vpn, I cannot access any network resources using the "connect to server/folder" procedure described in the literature. "Folder cannot be found" is the consequence of above.
Of interest, the Remote Web Workplace can be accessed using Safari and server address above, but, of course, one cannot remote connect to any computer on the network because of lack of ActiveX stuff.
Any ideas out there?The solution to above problem lay in the certificate. What the error messages were trying to tell me was the certificate was not "pointing" to the correct location: ie, the internet domain name of the local resource had to be added to the certificate as a new preference. SBS 2008 will disconnect any user without a certificate specifically from the server, and the Keychain needed be directed to supply the correct cert when required.
So the process: download certificate from Server/Downloads; drop into Keychain and change trust settings to "trust"; go to File/New Certificate Preferences and select above certificate and enter correct internet domain name for server; go to System Preferences/Network and add a VPN connection (PPP); enter correct user account and authentication password for server; in ADVANCED, enter correct address for DNS server (usually same as server IP) and Search Domain (the internal domain name of server); connect to VPN, and once connected, go to top menu (Finder) and select Go/Connect to Server and enter smb://server name -

Windows SBS Console > Shared Folders and Web Sites > Shared Folders - in Tasks panel click on Redirect folders for user accounts to the server.
Under Folder Names Select folder(s) you want to redirect (e.g. Documents).
Under User Accounts select accounts you want to have folders redirected.

Server 2012 std not able to see Domain, DC and DNS on Win SBS 2008 std Domain

I have a HP ML 110 G5 SBS 2008 std server as my DC on my network. I recently added a HP Microserver running Server 2012 std (with no roles or features installed) to act solely as a file server for a 3rd party program as the program was not running efficiently
on the main server.
The problem I am having now is that the 2012 server keeps falling off the domain and cannot contact DNS server. I have also had to re-enable remote desktop several times. It also shows the 2012 Server as being on a private firewall profile and not on the
domain firewall profile but I suspect that this is part of the same problem.
the resulting problem that this is causing is that the local machines that need to contact an SQL database on the 2012 fileserver intermittently either time out or are very slow to connect.
So far I have tried:
Switching from Static IP to DHCP.
Re-adding the server to the domain.
Stopping and restarting DNS services on the DC.
Checking physical Network connections and routing.
Putting the 2012 server into the same Organizational Unit as the 2008 DC.
Has anyone else encountered this problem when adding a 2012 server to a 2008 domain? I have a feeling that the solution is probably something simple that I've overlooked, but I can't think what. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How do I add a Mac to a Windows Server 2003 or 2008 domain?
I recently started working for a public school district that runs Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008 R2. There are several faculty members, myself included, that would like to get their Macs onto the domain and capable of file sharing, printing to network printers, etc. I cannot find decent instructions anywhere. Could someone please point me in the right direction or give me some directions? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I'm also new to the MAC world - I trust you were able to join the MAC's to the domain - I finally figured it out. However, I have not been able to get the MAC's to save to the Windows 2008 server where I have student folders setup. Have you been able to do this? If so can share the info with us.

How can I edit the way autodiscover.xml behaves in SBS 2008 and 2011?
I have autodiscover working correctly on a few SBS 2008 and SBS 2011 servers. But, its doing its usual misbehaving. When setting up a new Outlook profile, the user enters their email address and password. Autodiscover is successful in creating all
the account settings, but at the end of the wizard a username and password window pops up with the users full email address incorrectly filled in as the username, which is why it didn't work.
This has always been so annoying about SBS. The user then has to be told to delete their email address in the username field, then fill in "domain\username" instead. Only then is the authentication successful.
I've read lots about people adding the external domain UPN Suffix to ADD&T, then manually changing ever users login to domain.com instead of domain.local. Then you have to mess with the owa authentication settings in exchange to accept the
UPN. Its all too ridiculous. There must be a simpler way.
I have read about how you can control how the autodiscover.xml behaves, and there are examples of how to do it in this document:

The document above shows the settings we need to change. It looks like we can add the local domain using DomainName into the autodiscover.xml and this will stop autodiscover reporting that the full email address is required. So we
should be able to get autodiscover to populate the username pop-up with with "domain\user" automatically.
OK, so my question is, how on earth do I edit these settings in SBS 2011? I can't find any articles that talk about how to edit autodiscover.
If I could just edit this one setting (that Microsoft should have correctly configured in the first place) autodiscover will work perfectly for all existing users and all future users, without having to do anything.Just to straighten out a few things;
1) This is NOT a bug, rather by design. Not every active directory has an exchange server in place, and MS is assuming you don't want to give your internal domain name out to people (which is why it doesn't default to domain\username)
2) Going on what I said in 1), this is NOT SBS specific this is the same way with every Active Directory/Exchange install, keep in mind Microsoft did NOT specially design the software for SBS, they just bundled it into a supported configuration in a neat
little package -since the Exchange server we run on SBS is the same Exchange server powering hundreds of hosted email providers -it makes sense why autodiscover doesn't provide the domain\username (imagine what a mess that would be!)
3) I understand it's a little bit time consuming but it can actually be done for all users in a matter of seconds, select all users, right click and go to Properties, you can then choose the UPN Suffix for all users. When a new user gets created one of the
settings in the wizard is the UPN suffix and is easily changeable as long as you notate for the person creating the user to do it. (The problem here is if you're using the SBS Console instead of AD to setup the User in which case that's just an oversight
in design not a bug in the programming)
4) You can most certainly have a powershell script that changes the UPN suffix from A to B, let me know if you're interested I'll dig one up for you. That can be run on a scheduled task and will solve the remaining issues you have :)
I do see you mentioned it in number 3, I must have missed since I didn't re-read the OP before posting the article, however I just tested on several SBS 2011 machines and OWA authentication settings don't have to be changed at all, this worked immediately
for Outlook Anywhere and Outlook Web Access in my lab and two different customer production systems.

Problem connecting to MS Exchange 2007 on SBS 2008
I am having problems connecting to Exchange via cfexchangeconnection. Our ColdFusion environment is CF9 Enterprise on Win 2008, and the Exchange host is Win SBS 2008 (which uses IIS7).
After having worked through the documentation and following all procedures outlined at

The IIS7 implementation in SBS 2008 is quite a lot different to Win 2008, so there are some question marks around some steps in the above documentation. However, we have made sure that:-
1) you can use the credentials above to login via a web browser
2) WebDav is on in IIS
3) there is no IWA and forms based authentication is on
4) certificates are installed correctly on both the CF and Exchange servers
5) the myUsernameaccount has correct permissions in iis/owa/exchange
Despite this, the net result is always
Access to the Exchange server denied.
Ensure that the user name and password are correct.
From research it seems that a lot of people have issues where the underlying problem is actually an Exchange 440 timeout error where the password in the IUSR_<servername> and IWAM_<servername> (IIS/Active Directory) is out of sync.
I was pinning my hopes on the above being the problem but now I find that in SBS 2008 there is no IWAM_<servername> server account.
All this leads me to ask is SBS 2008 actually compatible with the cfexchange tags in CF9? There is nothing in the documentation that I can find that syays that it isn't, but given the amount of time we've spent on what should be straightforward I am wondering if we are on a hiding to nothing. Anyone from Adobe care to comment?

I'm trying to remove Exchange 2007 from an SBS 2008 server
(Server 2008 Standard FE). My ultimate goal is to completely remove the SBS 2008 Server from the network environment.
We have an Exchange 2010 Coexistence Scenario and Mailboxes/Public Folders/etc have been moved over to the 2010 mail server, on Server 2008 R2.
I have moved all Shares, FSMO roles, DHCP, DNS, etc over to their respective servers. We have two full blown DC's in the environment.
I'm ready to remove Exchange 2007 from SBS 2008 and DCPROMO the server. I can NOT seem to find a TechNet article that shows me how
to proceed in this kind of scenario. I am trying to use the TechNet article:

This article references Disabling Mailboxes, Removing OAB, Removing Public Folder Databases, then uninstalling Exchange using the Setup Wizard.
When I go to Disable Mailboxes I get the following error:

I really don't see why I need to Disable Mailboxes, Remove OAB and Public Folder Databases since they have been moved to 2010. I just want
to remove Exchange 2007 and DCPROMO this server (actually I just want to remove any lingering Exchange AD Objects referring to the SBS 2008 Server, using the easiest and cleanest method possible).
Can someone point me in the right direction?

Based on your description, it seems that you are in a migration process (migrate SBS 2008 to Windows Server
