Mac OS 10.5.8: battery issues

Hi
My battery stopped charging (green led still) and is not even recognized, does not charge; Got a new one....same issue. did the trick wher you turn off, unplugg, press 10 sec on standby blablabla...still does not work...what os going on? Thanks

Unfortunately the process of elimination through substitution of questionable parts with known-good ones appears to be the most likely to solve the problem.
The third part that may be contributing to this issue, is inside the computer behind the magsafe port. The magsafe board is the circuitry that controls the power inside the MacBook, and they have been known to go bad on occasion. This dc-in board kind of circuit can be the cause of symptoms, so before replacement it is good to be sure that is the most likely item. You can look into a repair guide to see what they say about replacing the magsafe circuit board behind the magsafe port. Depending on your MacBook it may be among these: http://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBook
However older batteries with a high cycle count, or some use patterns that do not encourage long battery life, can be suspect, too. A physically old battery with a low cycle (recharge) count may also be bad.
There is this Support page with some ideas on troubleshooting batteries, says MacBook/Pro, some of this applies to older MacBook; since 'macbook' is discontinued, while MB/Pro & MB/Air continue to exist.

A good source of third-party power adapters for Mac portable is OWC online. They have batteries to include some newer tech stuff, and offer a lower price at times. I have never ordered from them, but had been tempted a few times. They know their mac stuff in several areas, such as RAM, SSD, etc.
Good luck & happy computing!

i also read on apple support saying it's advicable not to leave the laptop charge in. i ask on some forum some plug in all the time some perform full cycle.
so which is the best procedure ( plug in all the time / perform full cycle ) so that the battery can last for 5 years.

    You're right
what's the best ideal to drain the battery ( use the battery until how many percentage ) 5% or 20% then charge it.
in malaysia the reseller says 5%. but some says 20%
I recommend to charge it at 20% and use all the battery until your Mac shuts down at least once a month. With this, you'll have a healthy battery

  • Genius Bar Feedback on Battery Issues

Ok..so I know there are hundreds of posts regarding various battery issues. I thought it might be helpful to post feedback on my genius bar visit today regarding my battery.
The issue with my battery is that the meter seems to be stuck at about 80% full, regardless of how much I use the iPhone or how long I charge it. I have no accurate way of knowing how much battery life I have left. I have even played 6+ hours of straight video to drain the batter and the meter never moves.
Fortunately, my lightning bolt icon (upper right corner) does eventually change to an a/c plug which tells me that the battery is fully charged even though the big green battery is always at 80%.
So the guy at the genius bar tried and inquired about all the usual tricks already discussed in this forum (restore, plug AC adapter to wall instead of USB, turn off wifi, bluetooth, etc). and concluded that it's most likely a software issue.
He did say however that the the usage statistics frequently mentioned here are controlled by AT&T and that it's functionality depends on AT&T sending some sort of over-the-air signal. Don't know if I buy that.
So, in a nutshell, they did not offer to replace the phone (not that they had any in stock anyway), but instead made a notation of the problem using my serial number and told me to wait for an Apple software update, which will most likely correct the problem. If it doesn't, then they can assume a hardware conflict and issue an replacement.
I know this is getting long, but I would like to add that my battery life itself seems fine. I just never know what I have left by looking at any of the two meters.
    G5 Duo-Core   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

My original iPhone had poor battery performance and would not reset the usage stats. There is no Apple Store near me, so Apple support sent a service phone and I sent mine in. The service phone has good battery performance and correctly reset the stats. I was notified that the original phone could not be repaired and a new replacement was sent to me. The new iPhone has great battery performance, but no matter what I try, the usage stats won't reset. Today I was told by Apple support that they believe this is a software issue and a revision would be developed to address the problem. There is no forecast availability date. It doesn't make any sense that a signal from AT&T would have anything to do with the battery stats. The service phone charged and reset the stats before I swapped my SIM into it.

  • My mac turns off when the battery reach full charge, what's wrong?

It was working all right, but
after a trip, the Mac didn't start, when i try to start the mac only with the battery,
Started normally, i worked that way for a few moments, then i start to charge the battery,
a soon the battery reached full charge the mac turns off and i couldn't restarted.
Again i try only with only the battery, everything was normal again.

  • A few months ago my fan started making a lot of noise and is getting really hot. I've taken steps to prevent overheating, but nothing has changed. Is it a battery issue?

I've had the computer for 2 1/2 years and it started getting really noisy about 4 months ago. I'm using rulers to elevate the computer above the surface of the table to prevent overheating, but its still getting really hot and the fan is still making a lot of noise on and off. Could this be a battery issue?

  • Is the Mountain Lion battery issue fixed - question???

    Hello,
I've been reading that the latest update to Mountain Lion has fixed the battery drain.
Has anybody here got this release on a Late 2008 MacBook?
How is it running? Has the battery issue been fixed or improved?
    Cheers

You can look here to see if your battery simply needs replacing:
Go to About This Mac (under the Apple logo in the menu bar).  Then click "More Info", then "System Report".  Click the "Power" row on the left.  You should see major headers like "Model Information", "Charge Information".
Look under "Health Information" and find "Cycle Count".  How big is that number?  If it is around 1000 or more, it may well be time to replace the battery.

  • Battery Issues on MBP (Late 2008 - 13")

I'm fairly new to Macs, but ince day one, my Macbook Pro has been giving me problems. Its battery drains abnormally fast and its lower left corner becomes very hot.
In 30 minutes, around 20% of the battery zaps out for no apparent reason.
I read on this other website to check Activity Monitor for CPU-using programs and things, but it seems the only thing which takes up the most is the Activity Monitor itself.
On this other website, I was told to enter "ioreg -w0 -l | grep Capacity" (without quotes) into Terminal. I did, and I got this (without quotes again):
    "ioreg -w0 -l | grep Capacity
Last login: Fri May 18 11:31:33 on console
    Sarims-MacBook-Pro:~ sarimabbas$ ioreg -w0 -l | grep Capacity
        | |           "MaxCapacity" = 3047
        | |           "CurrentCapacity" = 232
        | |           "LegacyBatteryInfo" = {"Amperage"=18446744073709549981,"Flags"=4,"Capacity"=3047,"Current"=232,"Volta ge"=10923,"Cycle Count"=263}
        | |           "DesignCapacity" = 4100
    Sarims-MacBook-Pro:~ sarimabbas$"
Is my current capacity value a cause for alarm? Does it show a problem with my battery? Is it a battery issue which is causing it to go away so fast?
I then ran coconutBattery, which is supposed to be some sort of tool to diagnose battery statistics and things. It, as opposed to Terminal, tells me that I have a 3047 mAh current capacity, with a 4100 mAh maximum capacity.
Whom am I supposed to believe? And even more pressing, what am I supposed to do about it? I really need to get some work done without having my laptop on the charger every hour or so.

Here's my battery information, as OGELTHORPE wanted:

  • Strange iBook G3 battery issue

I have an iBook G3 FireWire model which won't recognise its battery. It displays as 5% charged with the "fully charged" icon next to it and the menu saying "Calculating... until full." Unplugging the computer will force it to shut down. The computer's optical drive is broken, so I had to install Tiger via USB. The first time, it worked just fine, charging the battery as normal. The problem arose when I installed some updates (I think it was the 10.4.11 Combo updater) and shut down. Upon restart, it never reached the "Starting Mac OS X" screen, just staying on a light blue screen with a perpetually spinning wheel. After attempting multiple restarts, I unplugged the computer while it was on said screen, and it lost all power just as it does now. I reinstalled Tiger with the same USB and disk image the next day. Both http://reviews.ebay.com/iBook-Clamshell-Battery-Issue?ugid=10000000007193925 and booting into Open Firmware and entering the commands reset-nvram, then set-defaults, then reset-all yield the same result: it will charge to 13%, then stop and say "Calculating... until full." The charger is known to be working, it charges my PowerBook just fine.

The typical lifespan of a lithium-ion battery is two to three years. Some last a little longer; some don't even last that long.
    It needs a new battery.
Which exact iBook model is it?
You can choose from this list:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/index-ibook.html
It would seem that it is recognizing the battery; it's just not charging. If an iBook doesn't recognize the battery, there will be an X through the battery icon in the menu bar and the System Profiler wouldn't give you the battery information; it would say "Battery Installed: No".

  • Raid Battery issues....

I keep getting a warning for my Raid battery...saying write cache temp. disabled due ti insufficient battery charge.....Restarting does nothinng...Leaving system on for 72hours does nothing......

Does this RAID enclosure have a Battery itself that needs replacing, or is it the Mac's Battery? Is there a UPS involved?
a hardware RAID controller may carry a dedicated battery-powered write-back cache of its own, thereby allowing for efficient operation that is also relatively safe. Fortunately, it is possible to avoid such problems with a software controller by constructing a RAID with safer components; for instance, each drive could have its own battery or capacitor on its own write-back cache, and the drive could implement atomicity in various ways, and the entire RAID or computing system could be powered by a UPS, etc.

The RAID card reconditions its battery from time-to-time. During the interval when the battery is discharged, it may report that the RAID cache is disabled (and you are enduring longer writes because of that). It should charge up and start using the write cache again within a few hours.

  • Serious battery issues, apple support waste of time and money!

My Mac Book Pro 17" has a serious battery issue it holds a charge for a hour or less, and does not always charge. Telephone apple support and all they say is take it to one of there shops to get it tested that will cost me about £40 in train fare and take a day at least. Ive had the Mac since September 2011 i never started using it until late December 2011. A 3 year warranty for what!!!!! And it overheats.....  Apple good bye your becoming worse the Microsoft your just making money out of constant yearly updates/releases of your products, Updates which becoming boring!

The thing is you pay for a warranty and unless you live close to a Authrorised test centre etc, then it cost you more in time and money for travel!
I'm really not clear on what you're asking Apple to do.  You don't have to go to an Apple store, you can go to any Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP).  Your warranty is still completely valid.  You can find them here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1434
The title of your thread says Apple support is a waste of time and money.  What would have preferred that they do?  If you are too far from an Apple store or AASP, you can let them know that and they will usually send you out a box so you can ship your machine back to them so they can check it out.  Of course you'll be completely without your machine during that time.
You're comment contains quite a bit of bashing for something which Apple will clearly resolve.  Unfortunately, if you live in a remote area where there are no Apple stores or AASPs and you dont' want to send it in, there isn't anything anyone can do to help you.

i purchased 2 books for my iPad and they downloaded successfully.  They show up in iTunes when my iPad is connected to my Mac but do not show up on the Mac.  Is this a synch issue?  When I click the Synch box I am warned that downloads on my iPad will be erased.  Is that true?  My ultimate goad is to be able to read the books on my iPhone as well.  Thanks.

You should be able to copy them to your computer's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases and you can then sync them to the iPhone (or you could re-download them directly on the iPhone)

  • Possible cure for battery issues

    hi
first of all i dont own the device yet
    i am user of 5530,5800,n8,c7,701
i was looking farword to bring in my hands the first nokia wp7 but due to features missing and (in my opinion) little overpriced at the moment(as sim free) i will wait for the next nokia wp7
but being for a while in nokia forums i deside to write this atricle with my opinion about the battery issue (IF IT IS) with the 800
after reading many users facing problem with battery  in different revious and forums about my N9 last longer or my N8 etc i deside to do a test with my current in use 701(1300milliamber battery and the brightness screen that nokia offers right now)
i left all day the phone connected to 3g and gprs data with about 5 min calls couple of textsand little browsing fmobi, little use the default browser, little use apps which connects to internet ...all these  for about 1,5 - 2 hrs
it did last about 12 hrs same as some users with the lumia
Now if you dont belive me TRY THE SAME TEST BY YOUR SELFS
what i have understand (as i dont own the device) is that perhaps by default or out of the box (and especially the branded phones from the providers) is that featurs like wifi or data, nokia account, market place bing etc must be ON
if was the same issue with my 701 it will not go too far of course
what nokia possible can do is to do a frimware update which in start up or rebooting the phone....dark them, wifi, data, bluetooth, internet connection should be off by default like in symbian
i am sure the upcoming new customers will not have future complains
but i belive this is important as some poeple dont have the knowlege to do all these to turn off manual, especially in a new UI that they are using first time (wp7) and of course having a new phone most of them especially the non experts can think the battery drains so easy if all are ON
******* or at least nokia should make it like symbian to turn off automatic after closing apps, face, twitter, email etc
    thanks for your time reading
for me after my Xmas bonus(if any lol)  i will go for a windows phone(sim unlocked)either if nokia or other brand
of course i can wait for the next nokia model not because of the battery issue but i prefer in windows phone 7 bigger screen
    thanks again

I must agree with your thinking...
When I first got my C7, battery wasn't lasting a day...
And the reasons was the ones you said...
e-mail was keeping data on, WiFi was always looking for a connexion
I won't say that the Lumia 800 can't have any battery issues, but first of all, it's our use that kill off the bettery...
Setting e-mil to work only once per hour, setting WiFi off when not used...
Only those 2 option give a bette life to the battery...

  • My brand new mac pro always had Internet connection issues at school. WHY is that? I see the school's Internet working perfectly fine on other PC's, but there is never a day where my mac doesn't have Internet connection issues at school. How do I fix it?

I got my mac pro in the middle of August. School started the week after. Internet was working perfectly fine at home. But at school, I never had a good connection. Sometimes on the good days I get a connection when I'm sitting at the exact spot in class I always sit at. It's ridiculous and it's frustrating. I invested my money into this laptop and I'm beginning to regret it. I thought it was the school's Internet, but I don't see Internet issues with other PC users. It's most frustrating on registration days and I'm trying to register for my classes before it gets taken, but again... Internet connection issues. It's random. Majority of the time, it doesn't work at all. I've done Network Diagnosis and turning WiFi off then turning it on again. I've done everything I could. I put my money on this laptop and it was a lot of money. I could have bought an 800 dollars laptop and I would have Internet connection anywhere on campus. So, I don't want to continue everyday to regret on buying this laptop every time I try to connect to the Internet at school or Starbucks or anywhere else. How do I fix this? What's the problem ?
At school, I heard this guy had a problem with Internet connections too and he owned a new mac book pro. He said something like Apple messed up on something, but he fixed it. If I knew mac book pro's had these issues I wouldn't have bought it in the first place. It's freezing on me every other day. It's ridiculous. But what concerns me the most is the Internet connection. So someone please tell me what can I do next to prevent the problem? Am I doing something wrong maybe?

    Hi Kevin,
I'm using an XLR input mic which is connected to the phantom power enabled XLR mic socket on a USB M-Audio M-Track. The M-Track is connected by USB to the Mac Pro - so effectively I've got an M-Audio USB soundcard with a mic input.  I've also tried a microphone that is a straight XLR to USB cable (guessing with some soundcard chip buried in the usb plug) but that also yields the same effect of bad latency, intermittent quality, stuttering and repeating and echoing (without the speakers on during record so its not feedback).
The mic works absolutely fine with other recording applications I have on the mac at the moment - albeit non-adobe ones (tested it on the EasyAudioRecorder - and it lives up to its name. it's easy)
I will try with Audition and report back, but sitting here right now I can imagine it would work fine with audition too - it just seems to be the way premiere is set up for recording into the timeline is a bit sketchy.  I'm willing to accept it might well be a quirk with the new Mac Pro trashcan - I'm not weighting all the woes on premiere.
Any thoughts or am I out of luck to sit with my fingers crossed for a fix in the next round of updates?
    Nathan.
