Mac OS 10.6.8 Application folder in finder is missing the applications

All applications are on the harddrive but are missing from the applications folder in the finder. How do I repopulate the folder? Thank you for your help.

Seventy one,
Thank you.
I don't have Time Machine enabled. ( You would think I would give up on learning the hard way right? :-)   Is there another way to do what seems like creating an alias of the applications in the Home Folder? ( House icon)
Let me try to do better stating the problem.
Finder --> Home Folder --> Applications Folder  ( It is this folder that is void of applications.)  The Home Folder also contains Desktop , Documents, Downloads folder. all of which are fine.   The Applications Folder, which can be moved to the Doc is the folder that is empty of programs.
Finder ---> Applications -- Where Application is item marked  "A" under "Places" populates with all programs on Harddrive. No problem here.
Thanks again,
Curtis

  • On one of my Macs shift-command-f brings a search box that is missing the "To, From, CC, or BCC" option. How can this be fixed?

I run Thunderbird on ~5 Macs and PCs. I am old fashioned and use the brute force search option which you get by edit->find->find messages or option-command-f on a Mac. On one of my Macs a number of the search field options are missing. In particular the "From, To, CC, or BCC" option is missing. I have looked carefully on the Thunderbird support pages, the web, and in the config editor and have not be able to fix this. Any hints on how to restore these missing search fields would be appreciated.

Mavericks downloads into the Applications folder, where you can install it.   Some Mac App Store Troubleshooting information and how to resume a download that was interrupted; some of the information here might get you an answer.   Failing that, try contacting Apple Support.

I'm in the same boat as you -- except that I manage both a school lab (volunteer job) and macs in the enterprise (pay job).  What I think we need is the Education Volume Purchasing Program
    http://www.apple.com/education/volume-purchase-program/faq.html
Unfortunately this all seems a little rough around the edges -- for example, I have found updates for AppStore apps on the support.apple.com updates download site, but then when I install them via ARD they don't actually update the software.  (The AppStore icons still show as needing the updates, and the version info reports the old version.)  The documentation is also vague about which AppleID to use in which circumstance.  I think they just haven't finished thinking through the implications of the various procedures and policies upon the various kinds of customers.  When we deployed Mountain Lion on the school lab, we made an install usb and went around and installed it on each computer -- and it appears that you are on the honor system as far as paying for all of the licenses that you install.  We did!  But they appear to have no way to enforce it.
So far, I have only deployed 9 Lion macs in my day job, and our "solution" to the AppStore showing updates problem has been to drag the AppStore icon off of the users' docks so they don't see them!

  • How can I share the home folder with different accounts on the same mac?

    Hi, here's a question:
How can I share the home folder with different accounts on the same mac?
The whole point being not to have to install all my apps, and move all my files each time between users.
The second thing would be to be able to modify one document on one account, and have it changed on the other account without having to copy it.
I would like to have a pro and a private account on my mac.
    Thanks for you answers,
    Doug

Your apps should not be installed in your home folder--they should be in /Applications where every user can access them.
If you want to share things between users on the same Mac, use the /Users/Shared folder. Keep your home folder private. Trying to defeat the protections on the home folder subfolders just gets messy. I've never bothered to figure out all of the problems associated with it so I can't explain how to do it.
Even with using Shared, you would need to alter the ACLs on the shared folder in order to allow both users to modify the documents.
You must create a Group in Users & Groups and put each user in that group. Then create a folder inside /Users/Shared where you want to share the various files.
Then, add an ACL to the shared folder that gives the group special permissions. on that folder.
    sudo chmod -R +a "<sharinggroup> allow delete,chown,list,search,add_file,add_subdirectory,delete_child,file_inherit,directory_inherit" /Users/Shared/<sharing folder>
Replace <sharinggroup> and <sharingfolder> with the name of your group and your folder. Then, run the command in the Terminal.
With that ACL, each user in <sharinggroup> will be able to alter the files created by any user in the group in that <sharingfolder>.
Essentially, the client OS is not designed for true file sharing among the individual users. It is designed to isolate each user account from the others.

Whatever the problem is you no longer have a bootable system. You need to try reinstalling OS X.
Reinstall Snow Leopard without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

I cleaned up my mac and now all my applications are gone. I try to open them and it has a question mark on the app icon. Everything from System prefrences, Everything in itunes, iphoto, preview and mail? Please help

These question marks are on your dock? And you can't open applications from your dock?
If so, try this: Open a new finder window and navigate to the Applications folder in your hard disk. The applications in question should still be in there (the Applications folder). So drag each of the application icons that you want to be available on your dock from the Applications folder onto your dock, one by one. Take each of your question mark icons that are on the dock and drag them off the dock to get rid of them. See if that fixes you up.
Now, if your hard disk no longer has an Applications folder in it, or the Applications folder is empty, you are going to have to reinstall OS 10.6 then do a software update to bring you back up to OS 10.6.8. You may be able to just go to the "optional installs" folder on the installer DVD and maybe all the stock applications are there -- I don't remember and I don't have an installer DVD handy to look. That would be way easier than doing a full blown OS reinstall. Also, as I recall, if OS 10.6 was on the computer when you bought it from the store, I think there should be an "extras" DVD that has a handful of applications that could be reinstalled from it, too.

The combo update may replace anything you have inadvertently deleted.
    Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1
You can reapply it over the top of any previously downloaded version.  I see that your profile says 10.6.8.
Then software update to pick up any new security, iTunes updates.

  • Firefox isn't finishing install on mac - creates blank icon in apps folder

I am installing Firefox on a Mac Book Pro. I downloaded it and installed following the directions. Then the box opened that shows the icon and the apps folder. I dragged the icon to the apps folder like it said and then ejected like it said to. But then when I go to applications to open Firefox, the icon fox doesn't show. Just a blank page. When I click on it, it opens that box that shows the fox icon and apps folder again, as well as the disk image, as if it never ejected. I've tried reinstalling and nothing works. What do I do? I really don't want to have to use Safari. :/

Open the DMG file and drag to Firefox program to the application folder on your hard drive.
You shouldn't double-click the Firefox application to run it from the disk image, but drag it out of the DMG folder instead.

    Hi
It could be that you're looking in the wrong folder.
If, by "bar menu", you mean the icons at the bottom or side of the screen, that's the Dock, and you can locate your applications by right-clicking (or ctrl-clicking, if you have a one-button mouse) on an icon and selecting "Show in Finder". A new Finder window will open to the location of the application. From there, you can click on the icon with the three horizontal lines at the top of this window, and see the path to this folder (eg, mine says "Applications", then "Macintosh HD", then "MyComputer", indicating that the path is
    computer > HD > Applications
(which is normal). Sometimes, especially if your user is not an administrator user, applications will install themselves into your own user's Applications folder, which is at

  • BBDS for Mac fails to install/remove applications

    Hi there
I have a BlackBerry Curve 8520 and I use an Apple iMac running Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.7, with BlackBerry Desktop Software 2.0.1 (build 14).
I connect my BlackBerry to my Mac, and I click "Applications". No matter what I try to do in here, whether it is to add a new application or to remove something I don't need like a foreign language pack, I get the following error:
BlackBerry(R) Desktop Software failed to validate your BlackBerry(R) device update.
Validation failed because the module marked for add (net_rim_tid_basicFastEuropean) failed the checksum
Does anyone know what net_rim_tid_basicFastEuropean is, and how I can stop this error from occuring?

    Hey Kempyau,

Here is an article on the issue: www.blackberry.com/btsc/KB19728
That is a great article.  Very mac to hold down 3 and 2 for 32 bit.
It did not fix my problem which seemed to all emanate from  :-( P0cketm@c (I don't want to be sued) for Blackberry :-(
Using that app was not one of my better decisions in life!
I have the answer.  Geronimo.  Finally got my phone company, Optus Australia, to talk to RIM who were heaven sent.
One long phone call and it was fixed. Thank you Dawn Z from RIM.
P0cketM@c for Blackberry, even though its deinstaller should take care of this, leaves two nasty faecal matter like calling cards on your Mac in the extensions folder.
    Step 1 disconnect BB.
Step 2 Deinstall BB desktop SW (if you still have the downloads App for this in your downloads folder you will need to open same to see the 'Installer' and the 'Deinstaller'), and then delete any 'BB desktop SW' down loads of same on your Mac that are still in your downloads folder, desktop or wherever.  Press 'Restart later'.
Step 3 go to Hard Disc/System/Library/Extensions/ and you will find two files that begin with Blackberry - the first ends with USB and the latter ends with USBDev or similar.  Drag them to the trash and empty the trash.
Step 4 Restart the Mac.Step 4 Go to the BB www site and download the latest Desktop SW for the Mac and install it.
Step 5 - you got it - restart the Mac. (why BB? - this is a Mac and should not require this?)
Step 6 - Connect your BB to a USB port on the Mac - not on a USB Hub.(even with other phones such as Palm and Nokia I have found that this is an issue you do NOT need.)BB Desktop SW should open/start up.
Step 7 - Open iSync from the Apps and check that it can see your BB and check its settings and prefs.  Also do that for ICal, Address book, notebook, tasks, music, MobileMe, etc..
Step 8 - export your address book to your Mac just to be sure.  NB - RIM advise to set the Mac <> BB to sync with more than one Mac - it is better and safer.
Step 9 - that should be it - you can sync - only one way, not a proper two way sync, to start with.
THE END and now I life happily ever after.
I hope that this helps others in distress on the high seas.
PS - Don't forget after all this to open HD/Applications/Utilities/Mac Disc Utility, which I have located on my Doc, and run Repair Disc Permissions, which you should before and after every SW install and once a week anyway.

Hello congratulations for the work you have been developing. The apple support has helped me greatly improve my Mac and better understand some applications. Recently my iPhoto has given me problems and I do not realize what is happening. When I double click a photo it does not appear ... or rather the background is black and only the zoom window appears. How to solve this? I've done a restoration of the library, but the problem remains. Thanks and good job.

There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
    1. Permissions in the Library: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
    2. Minor Database corruption: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    3. A Damaged Photo: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). (On iPhoto 11 this option is under the File -> Reveal in Finder.) Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
    4. A corrupted iPhoto Cache: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/Library/ Caches...
    5. A corrupted preference file: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    If none of these help:
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
