Mac OS 10.6.8 Won't Log Out
Lately, my Mac Pro will not Log Out, I get a message saying an application is still running and if I close it down it can then logout – however are no applications running when I get this message - I always close all Apps before I try to logout. What can I check to see what the problem may be?
My System:
Hardware: Pro 2x2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 20GB System Memory, Using all 4 Drive Bays (750HD; 500HD, 2 X 2-Terabyte HDs) System: Still using Snow Leopard 10.6.8. (Displays & MacPro) and installed system checked out by authorized dealer in Nov 2013 (regular check up when more Memory added) everything running fine. Displays: Apple 30" HD Cinema Display and Apple 20" Cinema Display - NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT video card 512 MB VRAM - these are setup as Extended Desktop.
Try going to the /Force Quit or command - option/alt/esc and see if any applications show up. Occasionally an application will not quit even though you told it to.

My MBP won't log out of my user account. It just sits at a white screen with the apple logo. I have to reboot it (several times) to get back
to my user accounts.
I have done a disk repair and it worked fine for 2 days then back to issue.
Any suggestions?If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything suggested in this comment.

This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
You can then quit Terminal.
To prevent confusion, I'll repeat: When you type your password in the Terminal window, you won't see what you're typing.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, set one before taking Step 2. If that’s not possible, skip the step.

You can force quit it. Hold down the option key, hold your cursor on the dock icon and you'll see Force Quit. You can also try clicking opt-cmd-escape to bring up the Force Quit window, highlight the program you want to quit and click Force Quit.
Note that you may lose settings or progress if an application isn't shut down properly.

My Mac Air erroneously thinks I want to log out
My Mac Air 10.8.5 often interupts a movie with a request for confirmation of log out. Changing Energy saving settings has had no effect. I am running on battery but this occurs even when battery is nearly full (it is not a worn out battery either). Can't think what else you might need to know. Ideas?

Most likely it is going to be software.
However this is likely to be some odd combination of things rather than a general point that can be changed.
If you Own the File (it appears greyed out as already done) and you have Read and Write permissions then the file should be updated each time you change a setting in System Preferences.
Therefore changing the Energy Saver settings to anything else should be written to the file.
The System Preferences actually reads a separate .plist that is on the System Side of things.
Open the Hard Drive/Library/Preferences
Find com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and then use Quick Look (or Xcode if you have it) to view the file.
(if you do a get Info on this file it is Owned by the System which has Read and Write permissions and everyone else has Read Only)

Timer settings are in minutes
Items listing 0 means No. Those listing a 1 mean true.
I.e. the setting are set to dim the display but not to Hibernate (sleep)
If you don't think this file looks correct try using the Finder > View Menu > View Options > Show Modify Column.
That change the Energy Saver settings and check it show the time that you changed it.

My 15" MBP will not log out successfully. This started after the latest security update, at least thats when i first noticed it. It sits at one blue screen, then flickers to another with the loading icon. It seemingly does this forever and never actually logs out. Anyone got any thoughts? Thanks
It appears my MBP doesn't have a log in screen all together. When i enable user switching and chose to go to the log in screen it just sits there at a blue screen. I won't dare chose to not auto log in because of the fear it will not boot anymore.

Skype won't log out! (lets make them fix this!)
I can't find a valid post for this sort of thing, but it ends here & now.
There is no reason that is acceptable to the users of Skype, that should continue to allow it's program "Skype" to forcibly keep us logged in, be it as online, away or otherwise.
No, it is not acceptable to force us to have to go thru endless solutions to try an fix something that used to work correctly before microsoft took over Skype.
THE PROBLEM - Skype will not log us out & keep us logged out when we close the program on ANY platform.
THE SOLUTION - Microsoft/Skype & it's related staff/teams/coders/etc need to return this function to the way it was, & because of the era of smart phones an some users wanting to keep the silly function most of us hate an want gone, accept this idea additionally. Allow THOSE users the option of clicking their status to forever online, give it in the status menu or even somewhere in options but forcing the majority of us users to have to fight this battle is unacceptable!

Perhaps a flame war will result, hate for my name, god knows such things are common place when someone tries to do something good, not to mention all the idiots who lack reading comprehension skills an cannot understand the posts as they are written vs what they "want to read".
I hope this gets the ball rolling for the intended solution, the users must rally to this cause or it will never happen, we will continue to be forced to "deal with it" an we shouldn't have to as some of us are CASH PAYING CUSTOMERS! an our demands should be taken more seriously otherwise we can/will/an should take our biz somewhere else as that is the only thing that seems to grab a stupid companies attention.

THE PROBLEM - Skype will not log us out & keep us logged out when we close the program on ANY platform.
The concept of "closing the program" seems to have changed or evolved with the increasing use of smart phones, combination smartphones and tablets called "phablets," and tablets, which if I recall sales trends correctly, have overtaken laptop and desktop sales. I have been either an observer of or a participant in Skype's on-line Community since approximately 2007-2008, in other words, before the current Community platform was launched in 2011. Over the years, many people have posted about their wish that when they clicked the "X" at the top right of the Skype for Windows software client, or the red dot in the Mac OS environment, that single-click action would a.) close the program, and b.) sign out of Skype.
I prefer the long-standing procedure of the two-step (one more click or tap does not phase me in the least) close and/or quit routine. I appreciated this on my Windows computers and laptops, and now even moreso on my BlackBerry devices (Q10 and Classic), iPhone 6, and iPad. I like the convenience of Skype running in the background while I use the handheld device for other tasks, as well as not having to worry about accidentally signing out of Skype.
Much to so many other posters' chagrin, Skype employed a two-step sign-out and program closure - long before Microsoft or even eBay entered the picture!

If I understand correctly, what you are referring to is the "presence" or status setting problems: Online - Away - Invisible - Offline. For the sake of clarification only, this is technically not a problem with keep[ing] us logged in. I confirm that when I set my status or presence setting to "Invisible" (or, "Offline") on all instances where I have Skype signed on (first click or tap), and then proceed to sign out (second click or tap) and close the software (third click or tap), I am logged out of the Skype service, and my status of Invisible shows this. I appreciate the status settings resolutions are apparently work-in-progress, and that it seems to have been a long time to settle this.

Parental Control accounts with Simple Finder won't log out
Since upgrading to Snow Leopard, my children cannot logout. The accounts use Simple Finder and have Parental Controls set. To log out, we must Force Quit Finder. How do I fix this? Also, empty Trash does not empty the trash.
enable full finder. go to home/library/preferences and delete the files com.apple.dock.plist and com.apple.finder.plist. then control-option click on finder in the dock and choose 'relaunch'. then start Activity Monitor ((it's in /Applications/Utilities) and force-quit Dock. switch back to simple finder and see if it works better now.

Mac desktop freezing, crashing apps, and auto logging out
Yesterday my 27 inch mac running on OS X 10.9.3, late 2013 has started crashing every app I try to open and usually twitching out and logging me off. I've tried every user on the computer, all with the same result. I have also tried to reset the pvram and repair the disk, with no luck. I'm getting worried there is something really wrong with it, not sure if I should take it in to a store, or what. Also, I've booted in safe mode and it seems to work, however most of my apps/games won't run due to insufficient specs that I know I have. Very confused as to what caused this, since its pretty new and only 200 gbs of memory has been used out of 1000. Any suggestions are helpful! Thanks
1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Iphone won't log out of old apple id
I forgot my password for my original Apple ID and cannot retrieve it. I made a new Apple ID and logged into it under settings--store--apple ID. However, every time I try to update my apps for my phone, it asks for the password for my old Apple ID and will not seem to connect to my new Apple ID, even though that's what I'm logged into now. I'm stuck and can't update any of my apps. Please help!
You don't. Apps are forever tied to the Apple ID that they were purchased with. So, you can find out what the passcode to the old Apple ID is, or you can delete those apps associated with and re-purchase them with your new Apple ID.

Hi, I used my c3 for logging in to my facebook account and then suddenly it won't log out. I keep on clicking on the log-out button but it won't. It only goes back to my FACEBOOK home page, how can I log it out?? pls help. TNX.
Start the facebook application => Go to your profile page by pressing the second button from left on the bottom of the screen => Logout button appears to the top left corner.

iTunes quits when I'm trying to open it. I have installed the latest version and another user on the same Mac can use their iTunes when they log in. I have tried deleting iTunes and re-installing but it still won't open. Any ideas? Thanks.
Hold down the option key while starting iTunes and make an new library. Will it open then? If so, you have a bad library. With the new library import the library.xml version of the file in your iTunes folder. This will make it 90% like before (some metadata are not identical, but I don't know which ones).

Mac Pro Dual Quad Core won't boot OS/X, but plays fine with Linux/Windows
I've got a Mac Pro Dual Quad Core won't boot OS/X, but plays fine with Linux/Windows. I've tried all of the following initial tests as suggested on forums:
-Ram swaps
-Alternating video card in PCIe slots
-Trying alternate video card
-resetting pram and smc
-Multiple tests with memtest86+ over 26hrs and no failed ram
-Multiple tests (8-12 cycles) with apple HW diagnostics and no problems
-Firmware is approved firmware for early 2008 model...no new updates.
Gentoo livecd works fine and I even installed to hard drive and it boots fine with it. In addition to above tests I also ran a linux stress test putting all 8 cores at a load of 22 for 2.5hrs with no problems.
Memtest86+ for 24hrs+ yields no problems.
Where problems occur:
Booting off hard drive, DVD or firewire yields an immediate curtain of death and booting off a new snow leopard DVD dies about 25% into the install.
Looking at error log and a quick dmesg shows "Package 0 didn't get an HPET" and complains about AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext. Google turns up illegal uses of this, so doesn't apply to my use case.
I'm a bit stumped since all was working well until one day it was non-stop curtains of death and can't get them to go away.
A logic board replacement at $1100 is not a feasible option for something that works on linux and windows, but not OS/X, is a bit disappointing and somewhat surprising.

Of course to run or boot OS X and see video you need EFI based card. The presence of some PC cards can block OS X from booting.
The fact you get part way through SL DVD, pull all the drives, put in a new drive and format it from SL DVD.
Most of the things you tried are what are more common with PC hardware. Including where people have tried and failed to install OS X on unsupported hardware.
I suppose it is possible something tried and failed to modify the Mac's firmware.
If you have Windows running, and you have WD drives, WD just posted new Lifeguard utility which is what I use to do a good job of stripping a drive down and recertify it for reuse, works wonders. Maybe same for other makes with vendor utility. -
I just loaded Yosemite on my Mac and now adobe flash won't work in Safari 8.0.4 . Does anyone have a solution ?
If you can't install or update Flash, follow these instructions.
If you have installed the latest version of Flash, please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. After each step, relaunch Safari and test.
For a "blocked plug-in" error, see Step 4.
For a "missing plug-in" error, start with Step 8.
Back up all data before making any changes.
Step 1
You might have to log out or restart the computer before a Flash update takes effect.
Step 2
From the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data...
and confirm. Close the window. Then select

a. If you get a warning of a "blocked" or "outdated" plug-in, then select the Security tab in the Safari preferences window. In the list of plugins on the left, there should be one—and only one—entry for "Adobe Flash Player," showing the same version number that you installed. Select that entry. On the right there will be a list of websites for which you have specifically allowed Flash, if any. It's normal for the list to be empty. Below that is a menu labeled

From that menu, select either Allow or Ask.
b. If you still get the alerts, then go back to the Flash Player preference pane and select the Advanced tab. Click Check Now. Quit and relaunch the browser.

They may be an attempt to trick you into installing malware masquerading as Flash. Type the address into the browser window. Never download a Flash update from anywhere else.

If you get a "missing plug-in" error, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
from the Safari menu bar and check the box marked
Allow (or Enable) plug-ins
Then click the button marked
Manage Website Settings...
if present and make sure that the website is not blocked for Flash.

My mac air OSX10.8.5 won't connect to the internet. It says it has a 'self assigned IP address and therefore cannot connect to the internet'. Network diagnostics is unable to the solve the problem. Use the Airport Utility or log into your wireless device via http and ensure the DHCP/NAT service is enabled. If accessing via HTTP, you will need to manually set an ip within your local subnet (eg: 192.168.0.x).

From a Terminal window on another Mac, try this:
# assume IP address of problem mac is 192.168.99.10 and the username is xxx
ssh [email protected]
If you don't know the IP address, there might be a way to figure it out depending on your network setup.
If you get a prompt for the password then give it and it should log you in. If you get a "refused" message of some kind, then you can't login. Also you will get a prompt the first time you "ssh" in about adding the RSA key to your list of "known hosts".
If that doesn't work I'm at a loss. Have you tried booting safe mode? Have you tried Recovery Mode and verify disk? -- never mind just read where you've already done this. Do you have a bad GPU and it's causing the display to do bizarre things?
