Mac OS 10.6 SUS

This is in reference to another thread. There have been many bugs within the Software Update Server is 10.6. I wanted to gather some feed back as to what anyone thought of it. From where I stand I am partially up and running. The main problem I have now is that the clients have to be pointed to a specific catalog depending on the version of the OS they are running. In the past you could just point them to one catalog and let the clients fight it out with the server as to what update catalog it used. It has been suggested that I arrange my clients in Open Directory groups based off of the version of the OS. Unfortunately this isn't a really good work around since I have over 500 mac clients and am not running OD, but rather an AD bridge product to manage my macs. Anyone else mind chiming in?

Hey. This helped with my install. I was getting this error. It seems to be a problem with the DNS. But this fixed the problem for me. Just point the entry to your server and it will load in all the update and everything is now working. No more errors.

How long it took to get your Mac Pro

I ordered a refurbed mac pro feb 22....said would ship by march 1...march 1 came and went...got email said reschedule ship march 7 but would ship standard overnight...sent email to them that had to get it by march 9 so I could get it to my stepson for a presentation for college class...300 people attending....got email last night it shipped....ground...will not be here until march 14...called service...sorry nothing we can do...will take 50.00 off your bill...what a joke....I have never had a computer take that long to deliver...not in 10 years...I had a dell server here in 5 days....setup...hope it works when it gets here..

I still have a refurbished unit running fine from years ago... perhaps an issue of ebb and flow, and erratic availability.
I am sure that its 'beneficiary' will be pleased just to have it. If it was me, I'd want to spent time testing and making sure for a few days that everything is problem-free.
And throw some memory in there to beef up performance along with backup drives and a case of DVDs and CDs - maybe hope for a "my first iMove/iDVD project."
It is an impressive machine, and running Windows side by side Mac OS X (and SuSE etc) is more "Wow" than Vista has been.

Hi I have an Iphone and a compaq Persario AMD laptop that was purchased with windows XP Pro, but when the fan kicked on the laptop would lock up everytime. I sent it in to HP, but they could never fix the problem. I thought it was a driver issue, so I tried Susie Linux and the laptop works great, but now I want to load Itunes, so I can connect my IPhone, but the only OS posted are wndows and Mac OS, So can I load the Mac OS version on Susie Linux 11 or is Appple only supporting Windows and Mac OS for the Itunes applicaton ?

MacBook Pro Heat Issue

I just recently received my MacBook Pro this past Wednesday and I've been addicted since. This is the first Mac I've ever owned and felt it was time to move onto something better and more stable than M$. I do use Linux but it doesn't have near the support like Mac does except maybe Suse (only because of Novell).
My problem is my MacBook Pro gets very hot. I've read the entire book that came with my machine and I noticed that it said that the operating temps are between 50-95F (10-35C). Am I reading/understanding this wrong? I've performed average use of my machine and have used a Class 2 Laser thermometer (made by Stanley) to take the temp and i've reached up to 115 degrees F just above my function keys.
If i remember correctly from left to right it goes Northbridge, GPU, and then CPU. The 115 mark was at my CPU on the far right side. I also never hear the fan on this machine come on. This is the quietest lappie I've ever heard after extended use. You hear the fans spin up all the time in the Dells, Gateways, Compaqs, etc.
One of my coworkers turned me to the overheating issue with these machines and it made me quite nervous. I understand that they had somebody who had cerebral palsy apply the thermal grease. What i gather and understand is that is now become an insulator instead of an adhesive. Is there a Real way to remedy this situation?
I've read stories of people having this issue and stating they took the machine apart themselves, cleaned up the goop, reapplied AS5 and their temps dropped (from reports) 15-25F and even only 2 degrees F. I know that silicon can take a beating in the heat but i'm kind of worried about the other components in my machine.
Is this firmware update really going to make a difference or is this some form of coverup? I'm being cynical now but i'm worried that such a great product is going to be a very large paperweight. I ran tests on my old Gateway 600 series laptop (top of the line when i got it) and it hangs and about 98-99F at its high points. The fan also kicks on and is loud as **** but seems to cool it enough to be reasonable. Although, this machine does make me quite warm when sitting on my lap.
Does anyone have ANY ideas as to what can be done? Or what have you done to try and remedy the issue? Am I doomed like the rest of you that have this lappie? I haven't seen anything from apple about this issue other than some firmware update.

Master P, you did misunderstand Apple's specifications for the range of operating temperatures. Those specifications apply to the ambient environment in which you operate the computer. In other words, Apple recommends against using your computer if your room temperature is at 95 F or above, or below 50 F -- temperatures that would be uncomfortable both for you and the computer. Of course some people such as photojournalists do productively use their MBPs in extreme environments such as the Sahara Desert or the upper slopes of Mount Everest, but I'm sure they understand they are reducing the life expectancy of some of the components, such as the hard drive in the computer.
A temperature of 115 F or higher on the metal strip behind the function keys is perfectly OK. You don't need to touch that strip to use the computer. My criterion is whether the parts that I need to touch remain comfortable -- the keyboard, trackpad and wrist rest areas. They do on my computer, although the left wrist area can reach body temperature after extended use.
In my opinion the recommendations to remove and reapply thermal grease fall into the Urban Myth category and do not make technical sense. And performing that "fix" will likely void the warranty and an AppleCare policy, should you subsequently have a logic board or CPU failure. The "fix" will be immediately visible to Apple service folk should the computer have to be sent in for repair.
No, you are not doomed. My CPU temperatures after hours of operation generally run in the 40 to mid-50 C range, depending on what I'm doing. At the moment CoreDuo Temp is reporting 48 C. Continuous 100% load of both processors for extended periods results in CPU temperatures in the 60s-70s C, which is well below the maximum continuous operating temperatures specified by Intel.
The SMART disk temperature of my 7,200 rpm hard drive has always been reported by Hardware Monitor to stay well below the operating temperature maximum of 55 C recommended by Seagate.
So I expect to get years of useful service from the MBP.
Both because I like the tilt for typing and because it provides an additional heat sink to cool the computer in heavy use, I use an aluminum tilt stand whether the MPB is on my desk or in my lap. I use a KoolSink because it's very portable, but there are many laptop stands that work well.

You can't take the /etc/shadow, because MacOS encrypts the passwords other than Linux.
Your users need to change their password:
- via Webinterface from Mountain Lion
- or via Server.app
- or on a linux client using the OpenDirectory (LDAP) from ML
Each mail user needs to belong to the group com.apple.access_mail. You can configure with ML-tools any forwards. Tools: Server.app (Appstore), WorkGroupManager (http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1567)

Need to login to remote X server on suse enterprise server 9 from mac

I have the a powerbook G4 with the latest OS X installed. I also have X11 installed.
Can someone please tell me how I can login to a vnc server on a sles9 server from my mac laptop? I tried the browser way but the picture looks aweful. I'd like to use a X session from the sles9 server to my mac laptop.

   Thanks for the info on the browser method. I won't get to test it for a bit but it seems like a lot to ask of a browser, even if it does render images well. Which browser do you use?
   Please forgive my manners; welcome to Apple Discussions. I don't know how much experience you have reading the Discussion but this one isn't touchy-feely. It's very easy to cut-and-paste from the terminal, especially Apple's, in which it can be done completely from the keyboard. Thus it almost seems prevarication to be vague.

   When you login to the remote computer, please don't put a command in the line. Login to the machine to get shell access and then invoke the command. You might see some output that would otherwise be "hidden" in a remote log. What is this "kde" command? The usual command for starting KDE is "startkde."
   I've never tried to forward KDE. It's not an application that runs in a window. I'm sure there would be no problem setting up the tunnel but it was hard enough to port KDE to run with Apple's X11. Thus I can easily see the potential for difficulties but I don't know of any problems and I actually think I remember someone saying they did it. You might try running X11 full screen instead of rootless.

   Do you mean besides configuring and starting the secure shell daemon? Yes, you might have to make a hole in the firewall. There should be a suse "sysadmin" way to configure it but if you have to edit the sshd_config file and invoke sshd yourself, we can probably help with that.

vnc server.
   That probably means you don't have the bandwidth for it. I know that using CotVNC can be almost like being at the machine and Linux is generally fast even on old hardware. That's all the more reason to get X window forwarding working.
   If you can't find the information to diagnose the problem with secure shell in the logs, you can also invoke secure shell with the "-vvv" option. That will dump a maximal amount of diagnostic information.

SUS no likey Mac Pro Audio Update?

Has anyone noticed that some of their Software Update Server installations are declining to show the recent (2/11) Mac Pro Audio Update? I have a few 10.5.8 servers that have downloaded it, as they have the workaround for adding 10.6 updates described in this forum, but a couple have not, and 3 different 10.6.2 servers have not. I see an error message on one 10.6.2 server as:
Cannot process catalog item for product 061-7871 due to missing/malformed data.
That particular "product" is indeed the Mac Pro Audio Update. Think Apple has an issue w/ their Software Update servers? Anyone else seeing this?

About to mark this as "answered" (sort of), as I believe this Mac Pro Audio Update is no longer necessary (or available) now that we have the 10.6.3 update. My hacked 10.5.8 SUS machines no longer show this update. However, ironically enough, the 10.6.3 SUS apparently doesn't even show the 10.6.3 updates, so I guess in a way, this is kinda still an issue...LOL. Anybody wanna confirm or deny that this issue is closed (sort of!)?

Mac OSX SUS - Why aren't the latest updates offered for some software

For instance, on my sus, Quicktime 7.6.4 is the latest version offered for leopard. 7.6.6 is available on Apple's site. Is there actually a 7.6.6 update others can see on their sus, or is this a universal issue - and why aren't the latest updates available?

I just checked my 10.6.3 SUS server at it appears to have that Quicktime 7.6.6 update listed. The size is listed as 68.5 MB and the post date is 03/30/10. My SUS Server Admin interface shows a "Last Check" time of Apr 13, 2010 3:00:00 AM.
I have wiped and reinstalled my SUS server several times dealing with the "missing 10.6.3" updates bug reported many times in these forums so that may be why my server is displaying the Quicktime 7.6.6 update.

I've rebooted my mac before installing new ios lion, so after everything was done i copied my data back to my mac book pro, then simple clicked on adding to library option in itune and it only synced half of the track and rest simply didnt copy, i thought maybe some error occured and i tryed the same procedure again but its not adding more tracks in it. and i just notice when ever i try play a new song through my data it does not open in itune these are the same tracks and songs i been listening to since ages on different note books and pods..
Help me i've tryed everything but nathing seems to be working. and my itune is uptodated =S

Use the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

Server crashes when accessing sus directory

We have had our server running fine for a good 18 months. One day however the server locked up to the state that I was able to move the mouse and move windows however menus etc wouldn't load. I contacted apple care support and sent off my logs but haven't heard back from them.
This ended up happening multiple times and I was able to pinpoint that it was when our backup software (carbon copy cloned) that ran at the time of each crash. Each time it was when it was backing up a file inside the sus directory (software update server directory). I also ran a HD program to check the disk for bad sectors and this again crashed in the same directory. Now I have removed the directory from the backup and the server hasn't crashed. I have stopped the software update service too (before the backups ran).
I am worried to why this is happening. All the drives report as fine in disk utility. The backup are running but I don't want it to lock up again for a more important directory. The only way to rectify the crash is to power cycle the server and all services are unresponsive when the crash happened.
I also tried starting the mini in target disk mode and using a separate mac to clone the drive. The disk disconnected when I reached the same sus directory. I had to use disk utility to manually remount the drive as it showed as being disconnected (with the error message to go with it).
Any help or ideas would be much appreciated.

Error Loading Native Library on Mac, but not XP

In a program that I am making, I use JOGL and Odejava. Testing on Mac and Windows works fine loading JOGL's native libraries. However Odejava fails to load on Mac OS X but works fine on my Windows machine.
The only difference is that JOGL uses just .jnilib's while Odejava has a jnilib as well as a dylib. All the jnilib's and dylib's are in the home directory. I also placed libodejava.jnilib into /Library/Java/Extensions and ode.dylib into /usr/lib/ as per the installation instructions for Odejava.
When I try to run I get this error:
java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: /private/Network/Servers/students.central.spps.org/Users/idoneus/Documents/workspace/Idoneus_.03/libodejava.jnilib:
The only three possible things that I could think of are that
a)libodejava.jnilib has been corrupted, but I doubt that since I keep redownloading it.
b)The Mac computer is in a lab that users remote access to a server for users, which might possibly confuse Java.
c)libodejava.jnilib wasn't built correctly to actually look for the dylib
Your help would be appreciated because I'm at my wits end.
