Mac os 10.7.5 device name changing

Hello all,
I use an external USB drive to do backups using SuperDuper!, and after the backup under devices in finder, I see my 'Macintosh HD' listed but its name continually changes to 'MBP-MID2010 BKP' (name of external drive) and then back to 'Macintosh HD', is this normal? And I see finder using lots of CPU too and I don't think I have seen this before. I have a MBP mid-2010 and running Lion.
Thanks

This does not sound normal. You need to either 1) boot into the Recovery Drive or 2) boot into your Clone and run Disk Utility > Repair Drive AND Repair Permissions.
It's possible your drive is starting to fail.
Boot into the Recovery Drive by holding down Command R when restarting.
Boot into clone by selecting clone in System Preferences > Startup Disk
If the drive is having problems, it might recommend you erase and reformat the drive. If you are satisified that SuperDuper did a full clone of your data, you can select to erase and reformat the drive. Use SuperDuper to clone back to the empty internal drive.

  • Bluetooth Device Name Change

And I do mean "Device Name".
Trying to figure out how to change the device name for a bluetooth device. Now, I know how to change the display name. Select the device in Bluetooth Preferences, click the Gears, and select "Rename." Which is fine. But when you examine the info for the device, their are two names: A "Name" at the top and then a "Display Name."
How do you change the display name? I picked up a refurb trackpad and it still has the previous owners name, Aaron, in the Name block. I can change the Display name to John easy, but I am confounded by the device name.
I tried removing the trackpad, dumping the BT prefs in the library and repairing. Doesn't work.
I even pair it to a Win7 laptop, changed the name there, but Aaron remain when I take it back to the Mac.
So how do you change BOTH names? Is their a way to reset a Trackpad back to factory?

Well I was tired of finding a fix online and ended up calling Apple Care…
Here's is what did the trick:
    1. drag the "com.apple.Bluetooth.plist file" and the other 2 .plist files (com.apple.BluetoothXXXX.plist) to your desktop
    2. shut down your Mac
    3. turn it back on, and quickly press "command+option+p+r", HOLD until there comes the second and third "startup sound"
    4. login and rename the magic mouse as usual under Bluetooth preferences
    5. dump the old "com.apple.Bluetooth.plist" from your desktop into trash and move the other two .plists back to their original location
    Well it worked for me~
Hope this works for those who couldn't find a clue on how to fix the issue (I tried editing the "com.apple.Bluetooth.plist" but couldn't fix it, that's why I had to call Apple Care, you might have to try this if you have no luck editing the "com.apple.Bluetooth.plist" file…)

  • Dom0 Disk Device Name Changed... how to rename in vdsdev?

    Good Morning,
We had a server "incident" yesterday that left our Solaris ldom host rebooted. When it came back up, one of our guests (ldg1) refuses to bind with the error:
Path /dev/rdsk/emcpower3c is not valid on service domain primary
Sure enough, the emcpower3a device doesn't have a slice 2 (c) any more. My guess is since emcpower3c was presented to the guest as a full disk and the guest used the full disk (without slicing/partitioning it up) as part of a ZFS pool, ZFS overwrote the partition definition, leaving just the emcpower3a device usable.
Now the question is... how do I update the reference in ldm to change the VDS volume device from emcpower3c to emcpower3a? If I drop and recreate the volume, it could end up renaming the device in the ldg1, couldn't it? While I'm sure I could resolve that with ZFS, I'd rather not if I can avoid it. :-)
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks!
    Rob

"Macintosh HD" is the name of the drive inside the mac, not the name of the Mac.
To properly change the name of the Mac, go to System Preferences --> Sharing. There is a field to enter the name of the Mac.

  • "find my iphone" device name changed to something offensive

    hi,
i used my ipad to find my iphone4S yesterday.  listed in my list of devices was also my old iphone3 that I use as an ipod in a docking station in another part of my house.  i have small children and no one has access to my old phone to mess with it.  what concerns me is that what the name has been changed to as it's really offensive and threatening.  it uses swear words and refers to a female in the house, and as that's me i'm freaked out about the location services side of things.  on a practical level, is it possible to have my phone hacked in this way and if so what can i do about it?  can anyone help?

The name that Find My Phone uses, is the name of your phone: Settings>General>About>Name. Someone had physical access, & changed the name. This is easily done by tapping on the name displayed, then changing it to whatever you like.

  • Device name change - Please help

    Hello,
I just noticed that the name of my iMac under the device side bar has been changed to iMac(2) which I have absolutely no idea of how it got changed. Is there a way that I can revert it back to "iMac" has before? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    James

Sometimes this message means that you have two simultaneous connections to the same local network: probably Ethernet and Wi-Fi. Disconnect the Ethernet cable or turn off Wi-Fi.
Sometimes it happens because a device that gets its network address from the router wakes from sleep, and the address it was using before has been assigned to another device.
Rename the computer in the Sharing preference pane.

  • Running CS6 on Mac OS 10.9.5 - File Name Change - Flash

    - When one of my students was working with Flash they some how managed to save their name to the program so that when you create a new file their name is part of the file name. I am unsure how to remove this as I don't see anything in the preferences panel to change this so the example would be ** joe smith : untitled-1.fla** Suggestions???? Thanks!!

  • Set or Change Device Name in Profile Manager

    Hello,
Is it possible to set or change the device name of an enrolled device using profile manager?
I notice WGMs old 'Set computer name to computer record name' is still there under Login Window options, but I couldn't find away to actually change the record name.
    Am I missing something obvious?

The only way I have found to change the device name in Profile Manager is to change it on the device itself, then wait for the updated info to reach PM.
The option to "set the computer name to computer record name" will set the computer name to the name of a computer record that matches in Open Directory (based on MAC). This option would allow you to change the device name in Profile Manager in a round about way... change the computer record name in OD, wait for the change to make it's way to the computer, then back up to the Profile Manager. In my experience, this doesn't take too long.

  • Same device name has multiple IPs and MAC addresses - my fix

    Router: Cisco Linksys EA4500 (N900)
Cloud Firmware: 2.1.139.145204 (no, I don't plan to update this version to the latest)
    Cable Modem Service
So I was playing around with Oracle's VirtualBox (it's kinda like VMware, or Microsoft's HyperV) on my primary LAN-wired desktop in my home network, to create Virtual Machines (VMs, hereafter) to technically preview Microsoft's Windows 10 (may be released next year), and a couple of my other Windows installations.
I ended up launching VMs with the same hostname, but with different MAC addresses (and thus, different IP addresses).
The Linksys cloud firmware displayed all those MAC-IP combinations under the same hostname icon in its Smart WiFi Tools' Device List.
Some people here have complained about this issue, and I'd like to say this has never happened to me before (using the EA4500 for over a year), and I have about 15 devices connecting to my router, a minimum of 5 online at any one time.
With this kind of situation, you can't individually address each of those affected machines for Parental Controls and other configuration options.
What I did to solve the problem:
    1. Ensure every VM has a unique name (change hostname in Windows Control Panel).
(this can be challenging since a cloned VM will initially start with the same name as its master, and the problem will already occur. Once the problem occurs, just renaming the hostname and rebooting the device/VM will not solve the problem. Would be nice if it did)
    2. Get all duplicated devices off the network.
    3. Execute a "ipconfig /flushdns" from the command prompt.
    4. Delete any device (click on the x in the Device List icon) when it goes offline in the Smart WiFi Device List.
    5. Ensure no duplicates exist under Connectivity, Local Network, DHCP Reservations (I use DHCP reservation for a number of my devices so they are guaranteed a fixed local IP)
    6. Hit Refresh (more than once! ) under Troubleshooting, Status to get a list of devices with non-duplicate MAC addresses.
    7. Do the same after clicking on the DHCP client table button on the same page.
    8. Reboot the router (this step was not necessary some times, but I'd do it just to be safe).
    9. Now add the devices back onto your network one at a time.
If there are no more hostname duplications, the VM devices with their unique MAC addresses should create new icons in the Device List page as they connect to the home network.
    Hope the above helps somebody.

  • CM7/8.5 - Is MAC address for a device stored any other place other than device name?

We are interested in obtaining the MAC of a soft phone through a query to the RIS port.  Everything is working fine as long as the MAC address that is written to the device name field by default is not changed by a user to read something else like machine name.  Is there a field other than device name that we should be querying for a device to always be sure to get the MAC address of a device?
Currently the XML returned by the RIS port is parsed to get the CmDevices.Name.  The returned MAC address is formed by returning this name minus any occurrence of the string "SEP".

    Hi,
CNAME resource records are recommended for use in the following scenarios:
    • When a host that is specified in an A resource record in the
same zone needs to be renamed
    • When a generic name for a well-known server, such as www, must resolve to a group of individual computers (each with individual A resource records) that provide the same
service, for example, a group of redundant Web servers
Therefore please try to create your CNNAM record in the same zone and try again.

    Hi,
I have an iCloud account on my Mac which has a different account name to the iCloud account on my iPhone. How can I change the Mac account name to match the iPhone one? Kuranda.

You can't change it in one step. Sign out of the one now on the Mac, sign onto the right one.

  • Changed (renamed) device name in Intune app on iOS device. This change is not showing up in the admin portal, even after 24 hours

    Hi,
I am trying to update a mobile devices names.  Initially, I changed the iOS device name (Settings->General->About->Name) and then I also renamed the device in the Intune app on the device.  Neither of these changes are propagating through
to the admin portal, even after 24 hours.  Is there anything else I should be doing for this to work?
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Simon.

I'm seeing the same thing as Simon, I changed the iOS device name in both places on an iOS device and the name in the Intune console is still "iPhone" which is really unhelpful as I'm sure you can imagine.  Is there some other place
that we should be going to rename devices so they are more easily identifiable in the Intune console?
    Thanks!

  • How do I download the music from iTunes onto an old iPhone 3gs? I have reset the iPhone to factory settings and when I plug it in it wants to use the device name for my current iPhone 5 and I don't want to change anything on my old iPhone.

How do I download the music from iTunes onto an old iPhone 3gs without affecting my iPhone 5? I have reset the iPhone to factory settings and when I plug it in it wants to use the device name for my current iPhone 5 and I don't want to change anything on my current iPhone. iTunes won't let me change the device name for the 3gs. I just want to use the old iPhone like an touch.

    Hi littlemansa,
If I am understanding you correctly, it sounds like you are returning to an old iPhone that has been erased and you would like to set it up as a new device without restoring from a backup which would affect the name of your iPhone, as well as the contents therein. I have an article for you that can help you set up your iPhone as a new device, and that information can be found below:
How to erase your iOS device and then set it up as a new device or restore it from backups - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT4137
Basically, it seems like you may be stuck on a screen that is asking if you would like to restore your device from the backup that is filed under the name of your new iPhone, or if you would like to set up the device as a new device. I would suggest that you set it up as a new device to achieve your desired results.
Take care, and thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities.

  • How to change device name in Windows Explorer

    Hi Guys
I need some help please, my Ipad 2 was updated on another friends machine. now when i plug it into my PC windows picks it up as his device name even though the devine name is corect in iTunes. Can anybody please help with correcting this?
    Thanks

I have the same problem, and I can say none of these methods work.
I have the device named properly in iTunes (it's the same name I can see in settings -> general -> about), however the original name given to the device is still seen in Windows Explorer.
Apparently it is some unexpected "feature" Apple has forgotten to take care of.
Let's hope they change it in the next iOS update...

  • Change Android Device Name Using RD client - Is it possible?

(D5803_4.4.4 is my android device name) ... how can i change this?
    thanks!

    Hi,
It seems there is no such way to change the RDP client name.
    Thanks for your understanding!
