Mac OS 10.8 Temp and CPU spikes

I'm having a strange problem where any random program I have open will suddenly jump to 100% + CPU in activity monitor making the CPU temps jump from ~55C to 80 or 90C. This is really annoying as I have to close the affected program and reopen it when this happens.  It seems to happen completely randomly.  I first noticed this problem while running the Bitcoin-qt client however, while downloading blocks it took up a reported 700% CPU.
Any assistance would be great.
Thank you!

  • CPU Temp and CPU Fan Speed

I am having a strange problem . One time I will boot the PC and CPU temp is 43 and CPU fan speed is 1308 rpm in Core Center. I do a restart system and the CPU temp is 32 to 36 and CPU fan speed 3308. Not sure if I should trust Core Center . Bios shows CPU temp 48 and fan speed of 3328. I have been reading here that there are a bunch of threads containing some kind of problem with CPU temp or fan speed. My Bios is 1.4. If anbody can give me some ideas that would be great.

Open CoreCenter on deshtop.  Click where it says CoreCenter.  Click Cool&Quite button. Then Click apply.  This drops the fan speed back into the 1400 range and the temp will rise back to the 40s.

  • Creative drivers and CPU spikes

Hi. I have a few (probably Creative-related) issues that bother me, but hopefully solving one will make the other go away. If not, I'll post it in a separate thread.
Back to the issue. I am using Windows XP. Most of the times, my CPU gets clogged a little by the System process, which takes up to ~10% CPU usage. I carried out a little investigation and it turned out the Creative drivers are responsible for it. It's worth pointing out that I'm no computer scientist, I just followed a simple tutorial ( link here: http://blogs.technet.com/b/markrussi...7/3031251.aspx ). According to Kernrate, XENFilt.sys driver has slightly more hits that the other ... entries ... Again, I'm not familiar with these professional terms. I've found out this driver was produced by Creative, so after updating the drivers and software to the recent version, here I am - asking for a little help.
Year ago I purchased the Tactic 3D Alpha headphone set with the drivers, some software and USB device, which I connect my headphones to. When those spikes are persistent ( and unfortunately, they are ), I just unplug this USB device and plug it in right afterwards. The System process calms down and the problem is gone for like, 20 minutes? This period of time varies a lot.
    Thank you for your help
    Sincerely, Thomas

Since you are using Rhapsody To Go then you need to have the PlaysForSure firmware on the player. The PlaysForSure firmware changes the player so that it doesn't use the Creative Drivers to recognize itself on the computer, but rather a Microsoft supplied driver which is included in Windows Media Player 0.
Using the Creative Driver, you would have to install it on every computer you plan to take your Micro to. However the PFS firmware only allows you to use Windows XP systems running WMP0. Whereas with the Creative Driver you get Windows XP/2000/98/Me, and even Mac and Linux support with the appropriate software installed on those computers.
But since you want to use Rhapsody To Go then you need to install the PlaysForSure firmware in order to transfer those songs to the player.

    Salman,
There is an Apache timeout directive that you can increase, which should solve both problems. It looks like after the timeout the request is being retried, which may be the result of a different Apache directive. The access and error logs should show you some useful information about these cases. Some other reader might offer what those directives are, I'm not sure.
That you are seeing the page processes complete even though the HTTP request times out is not strange. Once the server-side code is invoked, the request timeout cannot stop it.

  • Hp dv3t 2000 overeheating/fan noise/cpu spikes

hi, i own a hp dv3t 2000 which is just about six months old. Since around a month ago I have been experiencing increasing fan noise and cpu spikes (100% cpu usage when really i'm not doing much at all)
i looked into this issue online and learned that it may be a airflow problem, so i wanted to take a look inside.
here's my frustration - i cannot take out the case because the screws are put in really tight and stripped, making it impossible to unscrew them. after 2 hours of intensive labor trying to unscrew my **bleep** laptop, i am so frustrated and angry that hp cannot bother to use a decent set of screws in their products.
i wonder if hp will take it in and have it fixed with the one year warranty on the product.

  • CPU Spike

I'm having big issues with cpu spikes  (9.1.7/  OS 10.7.3) Seems to be most prominent when arrange page is scrolling. Is this a problem many are sharing. It is really affecting my work flow!!
    thanks

Similar issues here with scrolling and cpu spike (with accompanying extreme heat spikes) on early 2007 15 inch MBP and Lion.
Question 1: what cost and process are involved in upgrading my GPU? Currently using the factory-installed ATI Radeon X1600 128MB along with 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. What would fix this at an extreme price-point?
Question 2: not being very tech savvy myself, what could Apple do (in theory and practice) to address this? Seems to me this is a clumsy enough and common enough problem that Apple really ought to be smart about it and address it. But first discussion boards about it appear in early/mid 2011 from what I've seen, so what's up? I do not expect to be able to move my old 2007 MBP into Mountain Lion (some frustration, but fair enough - things move on, and five years is not unreasonable), but I do think it is in Apple's best interest to at least keep older models cooperating with Lion as this greatly increases workflow efficiency with newer Mountain Lion systems. I was seriously on the fence about going back to PC - a stupid problem like this will affect my decisions in future.
I'm not running any particularly demanding programs (at least not from my perspective) - just MS Office, Safari or Firefox, Mail, etc... I have intentionally cleaned out the HD and reduced the program load - hoping to keep the laptop going as a basic desktop workstation for word processing etc... and have an efficient workflow with Lion and my new, 13 inch MBP.
A fix with more customizable options for scrolling and such seems to me (no computer programing expertise) like it could be appropriate here - there is already the option to turn off smooth scroll or whatever, right? Why not add a few other options to make scrolling less demanding on the CPU for slightly older models?

  • GPU/CPU Temps and Graphics Performance Questions

I am also experiencing some similar oddities with my 15in UMBP. As background on my setup I am running 10.5.7 (the problem began before the update) and I work in an air-conditioned office with a cooling pad for my frequently "toasty" MBP. I have noticed that my temps are significantly higher while running on the NVIDIA 9600M GT vs. the 9400M, and also I use iStat to monitor my system.
Here's the problems. With only Mail, iChat, Safari 4, and iTunes running (87-93% idle) I frequently see temps hit 150-155 F for the GPU 145-150 F for the CPU. While running on the 9400 with the same applications (87-92% idle) I see temps from 90-95 F for both GPU and CPU. When I had first gotten my MBP I used it mostly with Aperture 2 and I thought it was strange that I couldn't tell the difference in performance between the 9600 and the 9400. Later I tried to use it from time to time in Win XP (bootcamp) for gaming, but it would get so hot that i could hardly touch the keyboard and the graphics performance wasn't nearly what i thought it should be. In fact I was only able to run games slightly better than on my company provided Dell Inspiron D620 (old POS). On the Mac side I tried to test out the performance of my GPU by setting the graphics in X-plane just to the point that with the 9600M GT enabled the program wouldn't tell me that I had too many graphics options turned on. After getting that dialed in I switched over to try it with the 9400 and the performance was nearly identical, and maybe even a little better... I'm not a genius when it comes to computers by any means. I don't know very much about what kind of performance I should be seeing from these two cards, but I would think that the 9600 would greatly out perform the 9400.
Any feedback or advice would be greatly appreciated

I used istat pro to get the temperatures and fan speeds. You can download it free here:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/istatpro.html
I turned it on a few hours ago and the temperature of one of the cores reached 70 degrees C and the fan speeds all went up to around 3000 rpm. I'm just going to leave it off for now and take it in to get serviced. Only problem is I have to make an appointment and who knows how long it will take to get it in. Hope it works out for you.

  • Fan speed and CPU temp

    Hi There,
    I have MBA 13'' Mid 2011.
I'm little bit concerened about Temp of my CPU which is 96°C, and Fan speed is around 6500rpm.
I can hear my fan all the time.
It was not like this always and i'm kind of sure that something is causing this.
I worked before with lots of apps open (itunes, photoshop, text editor, chrom, mail, parallels..) and fan and temp was not this high.
Is there way to find out what is causing this high usage?
    Thanks in advanced

    First execute a SMC reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
If no change, install istat menus.
    http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/
Open Activity Monitor to ALL PROCESSES and CPU.  Make certain that CPU displays values from high to low.
Post images of both istat menus and Activity Monitor whe the MBA has heated up.
    Ciao.

  • Huge CPU-spikes on 8-core Mac Pro

    Hello,
I just got a new 8-core Mac Pro with 16Gb of RAM. And updated to Logic 9. And Snow Leopard.
Now logic is giving me the "System overload - could not process data etc" -dialog constantly. From the system performance window I see huge CPU spikes wich cause this dialog when reaching overload at the top. These happen, however, in a spot where there can be just one audio track playing. So it´s not a matter of having a hundred Space Designers happening simultaneously.
Is there something in the preferences I´m missing?
    I appreciate your help,
    Pessi
    Helsinki, Finland

Has to be Logic. In 10.5.8 I have a sample track with add. drums and omnisphere. It show 2-3 dots on CPU, logic 9 then in snow , spikes all the way to pops cracks and 100% so it's logic not optimized for snow as it works fine in 10.5.8. I daw this a lot in cubase sx and nuendo and the pc. And youbknow us iverclocking types. Ha ha. We learn howto turn off everything for great audio performance so hopefully apple will address this. Could also be the plug in nit snow ready too butbam leaning more toward core audio having a glitch.
Again, 10.5.8 is fine. I should test logic 8 too. Hope with the annonced updates coming and more pro features we get more CPUs, dedicated PRO team, express slots in all machines as apple should know, like digi realized, app the $$$$$ is in PROSumer use that's why they bought maudio. Remember how upset the user base was when FireWire dissapeared from MacBooks. Hope we really get back to creative side if things.
    Peace fam.

  • MBP cpu temps and fanspeed help

So I have a MBP intle core i5 2.5GHz with 4 GB of ram, I thinkits either a 2008 model or 2010, I bought it new in 2010.
It has always gotten pretty hot, but thats what MBPs are supposed to do, I get it, but lately I have been testing temps and RPM with istat pro and rmcfancontrol and I think there may be a problem.
my temps all seem fine exceptmy CPU temp, which is regularly above 70 degrees. when doing semi extensive things like watching videos, streaming netflix or menial photoshop tasks, it is generally 80-85, with the fans around 3.5k RPM to 5K RPM. If I plug in my new 21 inch monitor (1920x1028 resolution) and play online poker, watch videos, or any design tasks involving adobe programs, ive seen it jump as high as 94 degrees, and im sure RPM atleast 6k, these may both go even higher as I have not tested the max yet.
this is usually when I have say an online poker lobby with tables going, a tracking software db running, skype on and firefox on. one question I have is, will tthere be less strain on the cpu if I drop the resolution of my new monitor? I dont want to drop it past 1600x1000 (not sure of the exact dimensions) because then it is defeating the purpose of why I bought a new larger screen with a high res.
second, I already run a desk sized fan on my MBP while it sits on an elevated pad (0.25 in approx) with 2 build in fans, left and right. The cpu is located just above the ESC button and that is where the heat is obviously centered so i place my cooling efforts as much as I can on that area.
my next question is, with fancontrol, how high can i force the fans to run and for how long while doing these kind of tasks on dual monitors? Can I set the left side fan to run at 5-6k as a default when playing a session of online poker (this is my part time job so its an important question) while leaving the right fan at 2k? or would it be better to keep them balanced? how long can they run at high rpm before it could cause problems? how long can my mbp run at constant temps of 80-95 degrees before it is dangerous for it? like I said it is mostly common for it to be between 75-85 at most times.
and last but not least, could this be a defect that it runs at such high temps? could it be my fans that are just plugged up and need a cleaning or replacing?
all suggestions are welcome, thank you

Of course. A smaller resolution will require less performance to your dedicated graphic card. Note that your Mac has got two graphic cards (an Intel card and a NVIDIA GeForce one), and your computer switches to the dedicated graphic when it requires more graphic performance.

We don't recommend smcFanControl because your Mac knows what's the correct fan speed and because this application modifies the SMC.
It's not good that your fans run at maximum speed for a long time (5000 rpm is too high). Now, the best you can do is to reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 If you have problems with the fan speed, this should solve the problem.

If the SMC reset doesn't work, I suspect two things: the first, that you have a hardware problem, and the second, that there's a process eating CPU and memory when you are using the computer, because those temperatures are not normal. Also, at that fan speed, they may fail

  • USB/FireWire usage increases CPU temp and fan speed

    Hi,
I'm curious, does the usage of USB and FireWire ports increase CPU temperature and fan speed...?
I have an M-Audio Fast Track USB interface plugged in and whenever I play any songs from iTunes using that interface as an output, my CPU temp increased and fan speed jumped from 2000 to 3300 rpm. And on separate occasion, an 8GB of file transfer from an external FireWire-based HDD had both fans speed up to 4,400 rpm.
Is this normal...? All these were done with an external display plugged onto the MBP with "clamshell" mode.

USB operations involves quite a bit of CPU action, Elphidieus.
Firewire places less demand on the CPU but, in a situation like the one you describe can involve both increases in power usage and in HD temperatures.
The fan speeds on Macs are not simply responsive to CPU usage. Both HD temps and power usage can also play a part in the equation that ultimately produces the fan speed. As HDs have much lower heat tolerance than CPUs you will find that it is quite common to see the fans ramp up when doing a large file transfer over FW (or USB, for that matter) , especially if the internal HD temp gets to over about 50-55º Celsius.
    Cheers

You can easily reproduce this bug by reformat a readonly file.

Everything runs fine. It was my first MSI board and sad to say it gave me a lot of headaches and configeration problems. The new setup ran great on the first try. Don't  think I will buy MSI again in the near future.

  • AGP Aperture size??? and CPU temp???

    1. i have changed the Aperture size to 128Mb (instead of 64) and every time i enter a game, after at least 20 minutes (sometimes less) it kicks me out back to windows.
when i played generals it told me that i might have had a hardware malfunction... which is weird cause i have a new computer.
when i returned the aperture size back to 64, it worked fine, only slower... any ideas...?
    2. my CPU reached some interesting tempretures, and i have a lot of airflow... the question is this, when i'm not running any porgram (IDLE time) my cpu sits at around 43 degrees, when i do run stuff (like games, or graphic progs) my CPU rises up to 58, and i even reached 62 once...
is this logical? shouldn't P4 CPU's be cooler then AMD's? how can i force a change on the CPU cooler to work faster (when i change it through Core center the max i get is 4500rpm), can i make it higher?
    thanx in advance, EagleIL.

    OK,
I have just finished assembling my 865PE monster. I must say, MSI is consistent, the only issue I have seen with them is 2 things:
    1. They will never learn to measure CPU temperature correctly.
    2. Bios updates never seem to improve things much, or can be a disaster.
Other than that, I checked my temps, and with a side fan and a rear fan and a blower (pci slot turbo blower) out, I had 26-28 deg C at startup (cold iron). My CPU temp was 48 deg C which is physically impossible, and the reported case temp was 38 deg C in the bios but 28 deg c on my independent temp system.
I rearranged everything with side out and reversed one of the rears to blow in, and I have a steady 22-23 deg c after 6 hours. The CPU still reads 48 deg c and climbes to 50-52 under load. The reported case temp is still 38 deg c and climbs 1-2 deg. So I do not believe the temp readings.
I also do not believe all the hogwash about the CPU coolers. The stock Intel cooler has always worked fine for me, and I remember a report that said it was one of the best, in a test against a bunch of them a year or so back. There is good reason for this (I work for Intel, so I know it is not made up): They package the cooler with thier retail chips and also provide them to OEMs. They have to take all the measures possible to ensure the CPU survives the 3 year warranty and the only thing (99%) that will kill a CPU is heat. The heat removal rate of the stock heat sink is sufficient to overcome even the extra heat from OC'ing for the most part, as they test it for that. I believe the rates are posted on the website.
I would say the AGP issue is possibly related to heat effecting the memory on your agp card, or a software issue with the AGP drivers themselves. I would reccomen you revert to another card and try the same scenario if you can. There may be issues using the 128 setting itself.
Good luck. I thought this board would be a nightmare, but it has performed flawlessly with XP Pro, 2.6C, 512 meg ram (CL3!!!)(Elixer), and a Radeon 9000 Pro. I loaded Office XP Pro/Frontpage/Adobe and ran all three with no issues at the same time.
