Mac OS 10.9 WiFi Issue: Safe boot needed
I started seeing a problem connecting to Wifi AP soon after the upgrade to 10.9. (A similar thread exists on the discussion groups but not quite the same)
Essentially the problem I see after having upgraded to OSX 10.9.4 is "Connecting to a new wifi access point requires a safe boot". Here is what I have to do in order to switch between two wifi APs -
1. Safe boot and connect to wifi AP1.
2. Then I can reboot normally any number of times and I will connect to AP!.
3. If I switch to AP2 now, I will get a "locally assigned IP". Nothing can fix this - deleting wifi interfaces, re-adding wifi APs etc.
4. Safe boot and connect to AP2.
5. Now I can re-connect to AP2 successfully after a reboot.
PS. I had to spend quite a few hours at the Apple genius bar to figure this workaround.
From a previous thread, following is the output from "EtreCheck" as needed from a previous thread -
EtreCheck version: 1.9.12 (48)

My Mac Book pro recently started in safe boot mode and ever since I have had endless problems - To start with the keyboard will only input capitals and symbols althougth no locks are on and now I have a green wave on all white backgrounds! HELP!
Hi it's puzzled of Evesham....I didn't ask the question but have experienced exactly the same. I switched the computer on and it went straight to safe mode

I don't think Mac OS X Lion is entering Safe Boot mode
Hi Everyone,
I always do a safe boot when troubleshooting since my first MacBook with Leopard and after installing Lion in a new MacBook Pro, I don't think I'm entering safe boot mode. I mean, I press the shift key at boot time like I've done countless times before but now I think my MacBook Pro is not booting safe.
Namely: I don't see the words "Safe Boot" on the login screen, it doesn't take longer and the pinwheel is not replaced by a progress bar when booting.
Can anyone please tell me what's going on?
Thanks in advance! When I tried to run the Apple Hardware Test and couldn't start it with the "D" key, even though the "Alt" key and "Cmd+R" boot options did work, I started getting more suspicious.
I reset the PRAM and that fixed my issue.
For the record, the words "Safe Boot" on the login screen did not appear, but the progress bar instead of the pinwheel did. -
MY Macbook air keeps starting in "safe boot" mode, no idea why. I cannot get into the system because this mode makes everything write in capital letters and my password is in lower case. I keep turning it off and on but nothing changes and i cannot access my computer. Please can someone help me? Thank you
I'm not getting a clear picture at all of what problems you're seeing. If you are seeing online accounts have their passwords changed, those accounts are being hacked. Someone may already have access to some account and is using that access to reset passwords on other accounts. Change the password on EVERY online account you have. Be sure to use a strong password, and don't use the same password on more than one site.
If you are seeing changes to your bookmarks and browser history, your Apple ID may be one of the accounts that has been hacked. After changing the password on your Apple ID, you need to lock it down with two-factor authentication:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5570
Beyond that, we will need additional details about what specific symptoms you're seeing in order to help further. One thing I can say, though, is that these problems are very unlikely to be due to any kind of malware. See my Mac Malware Guide to learn more on that topic. -
Hello,
I realize there are threads about Safe-Boot mode. And about MerpAD Office365 files. And about "Recovered files" folders in the trashcan.
But my early 2011 MacBook Pro is doing it all. And no one has been able to figure out why.
My MBP has been to the Genius Bar so many times the people there know me by first name, and remember every visit. To date, here's what's been done to it:
1. Hard drive wipe and re-install (thinking it was the software)
2. Replaced bluetooth keyboard and mouse (thinking it was a problem with Bluetooth)
3. Numerous in-store diagnostic checks (thinking it was the hard drive)
4. Replacement of memory chip, logic board, magsafe charger coupling, and battery (thinking it was a problem the Geniuses couldn't figure out)
Everything has, essentially, been replaced. Yet, it still starts in Safe Boot mode -- three times this week so far, each time taking 5-6 minutes to recover and restart so that I can use it.
Here's what I'm running:
Processor: 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory: 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
Software: Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)
I've owned Macs since the late 1990s. This is my third MacBook Pro. Nothing I've ever owned from Apple has ever been this prone to failure and frustration.
Can anyone help figure out what's going on with this machine?
Thank you in advance.
BillI'm having the exact same problem. Since installing Yosemite, my iMac (late-2013 model with 32GB of RAM) is constantly hanging ... the spinning beach ball pops up constantly. It pops up when I open files, it pops up when I open windows, it pops up when I close apps, it pops up when I open apps, etc., etc., etc. I've tried everything and can't get it to stop. And to make matters worse, I'm having the exact same problem on my 2010 iMac. It's driving me nuts.

Ever since I have upgraded my late 2009-iMac to Mac OS X Lion 10.7 I have been experiencing issues regarding my WiFi. I'm actually loosing connectivity, as in AirPort seems to keep "refreshing itself" for no apparent reason, and disconnecting my WiFi intermittently each time. It's almost like my WiFi card can't keep a stable connection to my router anymore. This problem is not occuring on my iPhone, which is also connected to the same home network on the N Router. It's constantly halting downloads halfway through, or near to the end, and they have to be restarted and this is infuriating when the download has taken ages!
Even reaching this page now took several refreshes, as Safari keeps coming up with blank pages every now and then telling me I am not connected to the internet.
Has anybody else had problems with Lion dropping WiFi connection constantly?Hi Guys,
My issue more serious than dropping connections. I CANNOT CONNECT!! I keep getting connection timeout from our all office access points. But anywhere else , i can connect decently.
I joined this company for 6 months now and had no problem whatso ever until 1 day after updating to lion. I HAVE NO IDEA , is it software or hardware!! In boot camp also my wireless is not connecting to routers...I cannot believe it is hardware issue because i can connec to all other networks.
Changing the wireless router config is IMPOSSIBLE. it take me 10 days to get appointment to see the IT guys and they are not going to change anyting on router. I end up buying a wireless usb adapter. It is ******* me off. Any help?
This is my wifi card spec:

Tried installing 10.9.3 from 10.6.8 on my MacBookPro5,1 on 2014/06/03; it goes into a startup loop since then and only starts in Safe mode. I am thankful that Mavericks' Safe mode allows internet browsing; but I have searched in vain so far for a solution.
Things I have tried with no succes so far:
Reinstall 10.9.3
Reset power manager/SMC
Zap NVRAM
Puzzled over error logs
Logged into recovery mode, repaired disk and permissions
Made bootable installer on external drive
Install (clean?) 10.9.3 on 900GB partition of external drive, will only start in safe mode from that installation
Run Apple Hardware Test from original install disk 2, got an error
Confirmed that AHT error (battery thermal sensor?) was from replacement battery by running test with original battery. Tried but failed to startup with original battery. Internet sources indicate error no real problem.
Replaced 8GB memory upgrade (from OWC) with original 4GB stock memory, still only starts in safe mode
Before initially installing Mavericks from Snow Leopard, I:
Made a Time Machine backup on an external drive
Verified disk with Disk Utility
Repaired permissions with DU
Ran TechTool Pro 6 - Did not run detailed sector check, passed all other tests including SMART, video, RAM, etc.
Backed up projects, archives, and such on external hard drive, now wish I had done the disk clone option too.
I am hopeful for a solution to stay with Mavericks rather than rewind back to Snow Leopard...
Currently running off the clean(?) install on the external hard drive, here is the error message to Apple:

I can tell this 5,1 really wants to run Mavericks, even running in Mavericks Safe Mode is giving longer battery life already... -
My second 3gs - same wifi issues. Apple need to say something.
My iphone 3gs has very weak wifi signal. It starts at 3 bars and then drops down to one within minutes. The wifi speed less than half of my 3g speeds. My iphone 3g had perfect wifi signal. I went to the apple store yesterday and they exchanged it. I get home and still the same problem. There has to be a problem with the hardware on some of these phones. I have tried every fix, every reset but to no avail. Apple please say something or do a recall.
You are not addressing Apple here. This is a user forum. We are iphone users like you. Most iphones never have any issues. I doubt that they will recall a product with such high customer satisfaction results.

when i install updates from software updates and restart my mac mini, it always goes into safe boot mode. i then have to log in and restart. after restarting everything is back to normal. this problem has been happening since i did a clean install of leopard v10.5.1 and started installing apps.
3rd party apps: appcleaner, carbon copy cloner, cocoviewx, firefox, google notifier, google updater, logmein, maintenance, mozy, onyx, tinkertool and vlc.
3rd party pref panes: default apps, secrets and startup sound.

Welcome to the Apple boards:
Try this:
Boot using the Verbose Mode - Hold down Option-V key combo on boot. If it still boots into safe mode you should see why.
Also after booting, in a terminal run
dmesg
you might need to run
sudo dmesg
and enter your password.
This will also "spill the beans" of what happens during boot.
One of these options should at least give you a clue why it's booting into the safe mode. -
Safe boot issues tried everything
Howdy From NZ
I have a MBP with a bad case of safe Boot Issues
Things I have tried:
Disk Repair
Checked S.M.A.R.T status of HDD under linux and run a full surface scan to check HDD is fine
Replaced SATA Cable
Reloaded OSX (upto yosimite)
tried another hdd just in case
replaced top panel (thought maybe it was holding down the shift button)
and a few others I cannot remember at the moment
i'm Thinkin' it's motherboard related but would like a second opinion from the forum guru's
Also I've taken it to the closest apple authorised repair store, and they said it was the HDD, but clearly it isnt as I have replaced it with a brand new one and the sata cable
interestingly enough, If i 6 second death it, upon reboot it works fine, but if i restart normally it hits this problem, I'm thinking maybe its doing some sort of start up check thats causing it?, it seems to work fine if you boot with verbose mode every time without fail, so is verbose mode disabling something upon startup?
I run a repair store here, but im not apple authorized, but as stated before, have gotten further than the people that are.... any help will be greatly appreciatedGood Timing,
I was heading to Christchurch (the only town in the south island with an "apple genius store")
they told me it was the HDD again, even after telling them I have put a new HDD in and also changed the Sata cable!!!
Clearly this isn't going anywhere fast, and although I appreciate the help you have given me, I'm going to nut this one out by myself.
***update***
I borrowed a mates mac that was the exact same model and swapped the Motherboards over, worked straight from the get-go
Thank for the help, it was appreciated in making me think I'm not crazy.
Scott -
Had my Ipad mini for about a week. At first, the internet connection over my Airport/time capsule( which I bought a couple months ago, so it should be the newest generation) appeared to be fine although, I noticed that the signal bar was always a single to double bar (if that's how it is called). Now, from time to time it even fails to connect.
I am now in my living room in front of my mac mini set, which is itself connected to the internet over Airport/time capsule. The Airport is about 20 meters (abt 65 ft) away. The Wifi signal of my mac mini shows full capacity. My Ipad mini signal bar...it just says" iPad". While (when) connected I also have issues with iPad's ITune Wi-Fi sync. Connected by cable, checked the sync over wifi, removed the cable and Ipad disappeared from the Itune screen. I reset the Ipad, connected and did the whole procedure with Itunes and the iPad icon sticked to the itunes screen for a while but after about an hour disappeared again.
Now the ipad won't even connect.
When this thing works, it is a wonderful item. When it doesn't, it is a source of frustration. Can anyone help to solve this connection problem (resetting won't work) ?
thank you.http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-57559832-37/apple-releases-ios-6.0.2-to-fix-wi -fi-issue/
Some things to try first:
1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
5. Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
• Launch Settings app
• Tap on Wi-Fi
• Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
• In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Mac start normal boot after safe boot only.
Hello. My mac is about 3 1/5 years old now. Recently, my username crashed. In other words, my mac works on my brother's user name and then guest's as well but doesn't work in mine. It froze when loading. I took it to the mac support but then he created a new user with my name and then copied all my files to that one but he left the way it is. Now, everytime I start it, apple gray screen turns into a prohibitoy logo. So I do a safe boot and then it goes to a login screen. I then press restart button (with out the safe boot) then only my mac starts normally. The thing is I have to do this every time when I start my computer. Every time my computer boots twice.
So is there a way to fix this? I have reset the Ram but no avail. I don't want to erase and fix it. May be there is some issue with the old user. If I can fix that I might fix my computer but it's still a blind guess.
Please give me some opinions.

Mac starting up in safe boot spontaneously any ideas?
Hi,
my Mac as suddenly started to start up in safe boot, I'm not instigating this and it doesn't happen every time, I took it into my local apple store but as you might
guess it didn't do it when being checked out, I was given a new Keyboard and mouse, and for a couple of days it seemed to be ok but today it's up to it's tricks
again, I bought the computer in February of this yaer, and i"ve installed Logic pro 9, Pages and Numbers, It also started to lose connection with the mouse,
anybody out there had similar problems and did you find a soution?
LewisThere were a few threads on this problem some months back. It seemed to be something to do with Bluetooth triggering a Safe Boot. A restart straight after and it would always seem to boot normally.
The solution then was to not turn on the BT devices - keyboard/trackpad/mouse until the Mac had booted, or at least after the grey screen had appeared in the boot cycle.
Haven't seen this issue for a while and hoped it was sorted. If you haven't already, you could try downloading the combo 10.7.4 installer and re-applying the update. -
my iphone 4s and ipad2 both with 7.0.4 update will no longer connect to wifi.
About three days ago the ability to connect came and went and the connection never lasted more than 10-15 minutes; it has not been able to connect since last night. I do not think it's my wifi router as non-mac lap top has no issues. I have seem many similar questions posted.Reboot your router by removing all power from it for about 15 seconds. Also, if your router still has its default SSID (such as LINKSYS, DLINK, NETGEAR, etc) change the SSID to something unique. Note that all other devices on your network will have to be reconnected if you change the name, but if the name is still the default that is most likely your problem.
If the SSID is not the default then the reboot should fix it. -
Mac mini shut down on its own. Could not restart, chime, grey screen and spinning wheel. Unplugged everything but monitor, still only chime, grey screen and spinning wheel. Started in safe boot, shut Down, will not restart.
This happened a couple of months ago, unplugged everything and it restarted, now that won't work.Hi BDAqua,
I just did the repair as you suggested. T ran the disc repair, and twice it cam back, the volume macintosh seems ti be okay, I also ran the verify and permissions repair, both came back okay.
I was actually hoping that they would find something, so they could repair. I shut the computer down, and restated with out holding a key, and I started up great. I'm baffled. I have moved 20 GB to an external hard drive, as I only had 10% open space.
I have Tech Tool 6, would you recommend to run a repair check on that, or just leave well enough alone.
I agree with you on the new Mac's, I have problems with no disc for back up, until they realize their mistake I will stay with Snow a Leopard. This is the first problem I have experienced, so I can't complain. Their last programs are not as perfected as under Steve, prior to his handling over the reins, hope this is not going to be the future we can expect from Apple.
I will wait to here back as to your suggestion regarding the Tech Tool check
Thanks for all your help.
Gratefully,
Cheri
