Mac OS 8.6 on an iBook 600

My girlfriend has recently bought an iBook. Switching from OS 8.6 to Tiger is quite a major transition though, so it seemed a practical idea to clone her old Powerbook 1400 drive to a small (1Gb) partition of the iBook.
But the iBook doesn't seem to want to boot up with 8.6. Is this a firmware restriction or do I need to do something to the system folder to get it working? Except for a couple of invisible files missing in the root folder (which I happen to know are not critical) the iBook volume is an identical copy. Now I didn't expect to be able to choose the 8.6 startvolume straight from OSX, but after booting with 9.2.2, I can select the 8.6 system (control panel Startup disk) but on restarting after briefly showing a question mark the iBook boots back into 9.2.2.
I'd welcome any ideas, but please no "update it to 9.2.x". I know that might be a last resort, but for now, there's already 9.2.2 installed and the whole point is to have an identical clone of the old Powerbook installed, not least of all because at least one app from the Powerbook will not work under OS9.

That iBook's firmware won't recognize Mac OS 8.6 as bootable, as Mac OS 8.6 doesn't have the resources necessary to properly operate the computer. There is no way to get around this.

  • I have Mac OS X 10.4.11 with 600 mhz PowerPC G3 how do i get Flash Player 10.3.183.20 (65.7 MB) power pc processor

i have Mac OS X 10.4.11 with 600 mhz PowerPC G3 how do i get Flash Player 10.3.183.20 (65.7 MB) power pc processor?

Flash Player version 10.1.102.64 is the last version available to PPC Mac users. However, this Flash version won't work for many videos on Facebook, YouTube and other sites. Adobe's latest version, 10.2.x or later, is only for Intel Macs. Adobe will not provide a newer Flash version for PPC Macs.
The message requesting that you download Adobe Flash Player takes you to Flash Player requiring an Intel processor. Doesn't work on a PowerPC processor. I found a hack, installed it & it works with Firefox, TenFourFox & Safari.
Download this http://www.steelbin.com/FPforFBPPC.zip to your desktop, unzip it, and replace the current Flash Player plug-in which is in your main/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, (not the user Library). Save the old one just in case this one doesn't work.

  • Leopard on iBook 600 MHz PowerPC G3

Is it possible to run a iBook 600 MHz PowerPC G3 with 640 MB SDRAM with Leopard??? And if so, because some of you jokers will say yes, how do I do it???
    Cheers,
    Johan

That would be better taken up on a different web site, since detailing ways around Apple's installer restrictions are iffy per the terms of the Discussions. If you search the web for something like "leopard install unsupported", you'll come across a number of pages of discussion about the issue.

  • File sharing issues between iMac G5 20"/Mac OS 10.5.8 and iBook G3 600mhz/Mac OS 10.4.9.

Both Macs can copy files from each other using the AFP connection.  However, I cannot copy files to another Mac.  So when I try and copy a file from the iMac to the iBook, I get these series of messages:
    1) You May Need to enter the name and password for an administrator on this computer on this computer to change the item names "filename".
    2) The item "filename" contains one or more items  you do not have permission to read. Do you want to copy the items you are allowed to read?
    3) The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items.
I'm not given the prompt for name and password at any stage.
When I try and copy from the iBook to the iMac, this is the only message I receive:
The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items.
I'm not given the prompt for name and password at any stage.
With the iMac, I have the permissions preferences set for my startup drive and external harddrives for Read and Write for all entries.  I can't do that on the iBook because it doesn't have those settings in the Sharing Preferences.
Could the fact that both Macs use the same user/account name and password?  I never had this issue between my iBook and Power Mac G3 300mhz/Mac OS 10.2.8 when having the same name and password.
    All help is appreciated.  Thanks.
    Bill Rudloff

I've done a little reading, and it has to do with under the hood stuff with the Login ID number.  I found how to change it on the iBook, but I can't figure it out on the iMac.  Ideally, I want them to both be 501.  So how do I sent the iMac in Mac OS 10.5.8?

  • Mac os/z 10.6 for ibook G4

    hello,
    Pl see the link below:-http://www.apple.co.in/store/software/macBoxSet_retail.html
it says the OS can be installed on an ibook G4 (887 Mhz or higher). Is this snow leopard or leopard? I know that 10.6 is snow leopard and not available for PPC -so this is somewhat misleading.
Pl confirm if this box set can be installed on an iboook with 1.333 Ghz.
    thanks

There seems to be a typo error in the third line of the text at the top. It says Mac OS X v 10.6 Leopard, but it should say Mac OS X v 10.5.6 Leopard

  • IBooks 1.0 (or later) for Mac OS X 10.5.8 (iBook g4 ppc)

I have an old iBook G4 (12 inches) running mac os x 10.5.8; and I wanna read some e-books from my iTunes library, someone can help me?

Did you acquire the iTunes library content through use of an intel-based Mac running OS X 10.6.x or later? If so they probably won't work. But I could be wrong. At least you don't want a Yes or No answer...
The iTunes player in a PPC G4 iBook computer may not be new enough for ibook branded e-books from the iTunes Store online library source directly; those acquired by an intel-mac with later OS X probably won't work.
There are limits on what G4/G5 computers that run in Leopard 10.5.8, and there are minimum system requirements in effect over the Apps store, that say you can't even get content from there unless you have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 installed, so that means an 'intel-architecture' later model Mac that isn't a PowerPC.
A few other readers may still be available, but other branded ones won't generally work with others ebooks.
There are Support pages directly about iTunes questions, specifications, and answers; in addition, the iBooks discussions area may (or not) give additional exposure to this iBooks 1.0 question. The hardware and software of an iBook G4 portable with 10.5.8 Leopard installed is rather obsolete in the ibook apps era.
Are any of your ebooks from 3 to 5 years ago? With an obsolete setup, even that could be a stretch. And then there was a 'kindle reader' for older OS X versions on PPC hardware. Perhaps someone clever has some unorthodox ideas on making the ebooks speak from the depths of modern obsoletism or in holiday tongues.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Panther or Tiger: which is better for iBook 600?

Hi, I will have my aunt's old iBook for maintenance here over the weekend, and I wondered if anyone has any comparative experience on Panther (10.3, currently installed) and Tiger (10.4) on a 600MHz iBook.
I know, I am lazy, but I don't look forward a long weekend of installs, tests, erase and re-installs... My PowerBook 12" certainly was happier with Tiger, but 600MHz is quite meager in comparison.
    Thanks for sharing your experience
    Amadeu

Advantages of Tiger - Spotlight's content search many find is a great tool, however, its downside is that it isn't as fast for simple file searching by name as Panther. Security updates are current. Many more applications and drivers are available now which require at least Tiger.
Depending on the level of experience of your aunt, introducing a new operating system on her may or may not be wise. Each time you install a new operating system you introduce a learning curve. Ask her what sort of learning curve she is willing to tolerate.

  • Cannot edit original pdf doc on my Mac which I put into my ibooks library.

Selected pdfs on specific folders to be placed inside ibook running MacOS X 10.9
I highlight the doc, but receive a warning: " The original document cnát be changed, so a duplicate with your change has been made"
How to solve this? Best regards

I have this same issue. I even created a copy of the original and then put it into ibooks and the problem persists. Ibooks is such a half baked product.

  • What Mac OS is available for an ibook G4?

I have a refurbished Mac that doesn't have an OS on it; I am not the original owner--it was given to me by someone who was going to throw it away after getting a new one.  As expected, they didn't have any of the CDs that came with it.
    Thanks!

It is likely able to run all versions of Leopard. You will need to look for Leopard on eBay, Amazon.com, or search Google. Be sure to purchase only a retail version (no discs with gray labels.)
It's possible Apple still sells replacement discs for the model, but don't take my word for that. Call:
Apple Store Customer Service at 1-800-676-2775 or visit online Help for more information.

  • HD sharing incompatibliity

My Acomdata external hard drive (E5 series; USB 2.0 & FireWire 400 Combo w/PushButton™ Backup) is not compatible with the new Airport Extreme USB hd sharing. While the Mac recognises the drive, as soon I you try to mount it, it knocks the router offline. It then shows a solid yellow and tries to reboot. Once it reaches green, it gets knocked down to yellow again. So, there is some conflict between drive and router. When I shut down the hd, the router reboots without problems.
On the contrary, hd sharing works fine with other Acomdata firewire enclosures of a different type.
Talked to Apple Care Support and they took note of this conflict of Airport Extreme and the E5 series, but had no remedy. Did anybody solve such a conflict?

two questions: 1) do you think my computer could have been compromised?
    most definitely not.
    2) in other directories like library and system i still have wheel , is this ok?
yes. please don't change them. running repair permissions in disk utility will take care of wrong permissions on any other system folders.

  • How to install Mac OS 10.1 on iBook G4 mid-2005

Hi. I have just bought a vintage copy of Mac OS 10.1 for my iBook G4, not realizing that I can't strictly speaking install the OS on the machine. I read that some people have done it, but I am running 10.4.11, and I was wondering how I can dual boot and install 10.1 on a different partition, as the earliest OS was 10.3 Panther. Thanks!
    -jonasfromwa

Rather unlikely Puma 10.1.5 would be able to support booting a later model mid-2005 iBook G4 that shipped with Tiger 10.4.x -- As Puma was intended to run on G3 PPCs, that often would have booted in OS 9 by default. And used rather different firmware in specific hardware for the old PPC G3 to use OSX on vintage chips. A real headache zone. I'd rather have seen some more parallel development of OS 9.2.2... Almost as good as Tiger 10.4.11 as a fine OS.
I vaguely remember Puma as a 'vast improvement over the OS X Public Beta of Sept 2000' which some foolishly installed on their workstations.
Use older Vintage hardware with partitioned hard disk drives, and watch for those which supported FireWire (iMac400DV was a good one) because you could use an external hard disk drive. Maybe even boot clones, etc from there. With all the limitations on the early hardware that made first practical use of OS X nearly impossible, a newer machine at the other end won't support an antique operating system readily if at all. Not without writing some code; and there probably are firmware considerations beyond the scope of reason. Better to get the correct hardware for the vintage experience.
Makes me tired just thinking about it!

  • How to show the pdf from the iPad in the new iBooks on the Mac Book Pro?

I have several books in PDF format on my iPad 4 but for some reason they persistently REFUSE to appear in the iBooks on my Mac book Pro (haven't checked the iPhones). The new iBooks brags that we can ontinue reading our books where we left from one device to the other, and since most of my interesting books are in PDF, how can I access this feature? What if I create a book with a iBook creator, will it show?
Thank you very much for your answers...

I figured it out (for me anyway) for syncing via USB or WiFi.
My PDFs in iBooks Mac weren't showing up in iBooks iOS & this is how I fixed it - it's syncing seamlessly now
I went to iTunes for Mac
Clicked on my device e.g. iPad
Clicked on 'Books' from along the menu that says 'Summary - Apps - Tones' etc.
    Ticked the 'Sync Books' checkbox
Selected the 'All books' button, making sure that under the menu ('Books') I had selected 'Books and PDF files'
And then pressed the sync button at the bottom right of iTunes. It worked.
It's a 'set it and forget it solution' - after doing this I no longer need to interact with iTunes for syncing PDFs & books. Even when I rename collections on iBooks Mac, it transfers seamlessly across to iBooks on my iPad/iPhone via Wi-Fi.
Hope that helps - it certainly wasn't obvious to me.
    Best,
    Haider

  • Ibook G4 to Mac Mini (Intel)

Would like to know how best to use my G4 ibook as a screen and keyboard for a new Mac Mini? Will also get new MacBook Pro in October 2007 and would like to do the same with this. Will Mac Mini connection be the same?

You can use this software to display the Mac mini's screen on the iBook, but another monitor is needed for initial setup.

  • IBook 14" 600 - Airport - Can't see network

I just upgraded to the Extreme N Airport Base - Now I can't get my old iBook 600 to see the network (My MBP and MacPro see it fine).
I've tried the 802.11a compatibile setting as well as the b/g. Neither allows it to be seen.

802.11a uses 5 GHz which the iBook can't use at all.
The AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) must be configured to operate in an 802.11b/g compatible mode.
Try configuring the AEBS to use a channel between 1 and 11.
