Mac OS 8 Won't Detect Ethernet

I've been using Mac OS 8 on my PowerBook 5300c for awhile, but, no matter how hard I tried, NO combination of networking software would work. Help plz!

The 5300c out out of the box does not have built in ethernet so what type of 'networking' are you talking about?
It does have Appletalk built in through the modem/printer port if that is what you mean. The sw is built into the system on that one but that is not ethernet.
The only way to get ethernet on the 5300 series was with a PCMCIA card in the slots or a fairly rare Asante EN/SC adaptor that plugged into the square SCSI port on the back.
You can also go wireless via a Wavelan or similar PCMCIA card in the slots but you need to be careful as only a few cards will work with a Mac.

  • Macbook won't detect ethernet cord...

    Hey guys-
I'm staying in my girlfriends dorm and last night and earlier this morning the internet was working fine on my Macbook and then all the sudden it stopped detecting my ethernet cord...I keep plugging it in and out and no detection and then I put it in my girlfriend's macbook and it connects instantly...any ideas?

My daughter is a student at U. Mass. Amherst and she's having the exact same problem with her Dual Core Macbook. It just stopped connecting via Ethernet out of the blue last week.
Her roommate can get on fine with the same jack and cable. Since the port detects when the cable is inserted or removed, that suggests the port itself is ok... right? She can get on via airport elsewhere on campus, but not in her room, so that's a pain.
She's up to date with the latest firmware and OS -- in fact, I updated it over the weekend, not knowing whe was having problems back at school. the folks who run the campus computer support center are apparently not too Mac-savvy.
Were you able to resolve this problem?
    Thanks...

Have you tried connecting your external drive to another computer?  It is possible that it is bad, and won't work with any system now.

  • Mac Pro suddenly won't detect display anymore!

Hi - I have a 2008 Mac Pro (two 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors) and I believe it came with a ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT stock video card. I have been connecting it to a 23-inch Apple Cinema HD Display (DVI connection) with no problems and suddenly when I went to start up my Mac a few days ago the display remained black. I never had flickering or any issues before that. The display is clearly powered on and I hear the Mac chime and drive spin, but see no video connection.
I hooked up my laptop to the Apple display to make sure it was okay, and sure enough my laptop desktop immediately appeared. I disconnected all peripherals from the Mac, connected the display to the second DVI port, then rebooted the Mac - still no video. I tried rebooting from the original OSX CD and I also reset the PRAM, nothing helped!
Is my video card fried? Or could it be the slot the card is in? How can I troubleshoot further? I want to be sure it's the video card before I go buy a new one...any suggestions? Thanks!

    Hi-
Try a Safe mode boot (hold Shift while starting).
Try to boot to the Apple Hardware Test Disc. Run the test.
Remove and reseat the graphics card.
If all these fail to restore or show video, replace the graphics card.

  • Imac won't detect ethernet cable or firewire connections,

I've also run the prescribed Hardware test which freezes at 2m07sec

If you have not already, I would reset PRAM

and if that does not help, follow this procedure to reset SMU

  • Ibook 12" PPC 1.33 mhz Can't detect ethernet Board (sometimes)

Hi... I found a werd thing on my Ibook 12". I have a cable ISP and 2 computers. And it's not ISP problems cause I connect the other PC (windows) and works very finne). So last 2 week my Ibook starts with a werd behaviour. Sometime when I try to connect Ethernet connection the computer don't recognize the board, like if there wasn't a LAN board. I've try all, format disk, reinstall all the OSX 10.4.10 tiger and no chance....
The most werd is that when I run the DVD "hardwar test" this one blocks all ways..... And sometimes I just turn on my Ibook and the ethernet seem to work good (at this time when I run the hardware test the system return a message that hardware is working good).
So this is an intermitent problem, sometimes does this, sometimes does that...
I Call the apple care system and the funny thing is that I've buy my apple I europe and i still living here, so according to EU Law, appl should give 2 years warranty. I've call the local suport and they told me that I have to contact Apple care system for warranty extension (???????)
So this is my problem??? I'm the custumer and I have to (ASK?) for warraty extension??? ahhh and the best thing is that Apple susport denied my warranty extension with the bill in their faces :/
SO i've decided to contact my lawer to fix this damm confusion with procedures in apple care extension warranty.
As it's my right to have 2 years warranty, so why should I have to ask apple to an extension??? And of course, why apple denied my warranty extension without explanation?
I love Apple computers, and I've been custumer for years.. but working like this, no!!!!!! Simply no....
Does thi happen with someone else????

Hi - sorry to say I can't help but I have the same problem. My iBook G4 1.33GHz 12" won't detect its own integrated airport extreme card. I too have run the hardware tests which show everything is fine, but then under 'system information' it reads 'no airport card'. This is the second time this has happened and it's the second logic board too. I bought it in April 2007, and had to replace the logic board 8 months later. Under the one year warranty I paid nothing, but yep - you guessed it, same problem occurred again another 8 months later. I visited the Genius Bar over here and those boys were stumped too. It wasn't until I brought up the logic board failures that are plaguing G3s and G4s that they acknowledged that they'd heard of them. BUT, as it is outside the one year warranty of the original purchase, Apple say 'bad luck sucker!' I have three other Macs, but this is the first one with this problem. The internet connection works fine only IF it is connected via ethernet cable. After three months of frustration I put it aside for a while, turned it on again yesterday and the wireless WORKED - for about 10 seconds and then it dissapeared again. After reading the threads, it seems there have been G3 and G4 problems with logic boards. In Denmark the governement has stepped in and demanded Apple recall the faulty logic boards of G4s too. Not so lucky anywhere else yet. The posters on the threads on this support site seem to mostly talk about video problems with their G4s and logic boards, and there have been some ingenious 'repairs' and 'solutions' found to reparing the logic boards. Our problem seems to be wireless and so far I haven't found any fixes to that, but I'm wondering if they are the same problem - faulty soldering???

  • I have an Epson printer on a Wifi network. Windows 7 desktop and and HP Win 7 laptop (my wifes) print to it just fine. My MacBook Pro running Yosemite won't detect it, and I have the latest driver installed. No problem when I had a Canon...

I have an Epson printer on a Wifi network. Windows 7 desktop is running the network, and my wife's HP Win 7 laptop prints to it just fine. My MacBook Pro running Yosemite won't detect it, and I do have the latest driver installed. I didn't have a problem when I had a Canon Pixma on the network, but when I replaced it with the Epson nothing seems to work. I go to add a printer to the queue and only the FAX function of the printer shows up - not the WS-4530 print function. Does anyone out there have any suggestions?  Please??? :-)

    Hi Kelly,
As someone who has to print from my Mac to a networked printer at home all the time, I can certainly understand how frustrating it must be to have that fail to perform as expected. Let's see if we can get you up and running.
I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -
    OS X Yosemite: Printing troubleshooting
Start with the section titled Check the network.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Sincerely,

  • Imac running Yosemite won't detect external display

I previously was using a 2008 iMac desktop and running OS X Yosemite. I was using dual monitors (other monitor being Insignia brand) and everything worked fine. Since this was an earlier mac version, I was using the Mini DVI to VGA Adapter to connect. Last week, I got a brand new iMac (Mid 2014 version). I am running OS X Yosemite as well, but now it won't detect any displays. I'm now using the Thunderbolt cable to connect so I wonder if that has anything to do with it. But I have used that same Thunderbolt cable before on my macbook and it worked just fine.
I've tried restarting, resetting the PRAM and everything. I don't know what else to do. Help!

Thanks for the reply, but tried everything and it still won't work. Rebooted, installed updates, cleared PRAM, everything. It will not detect the displays at all. Maybe there is something wrong with my VGA cable.

  • I told Time Machine no and now it won't detect my external drive...

Whenever I would plug in my external drive it would pop up with a Time Machine dialog asking if I would like to set it up for backup. I usually hit the ask me later option. Well last time I just hit no. It was starting to annoy me. Well now, when I plug in that drive, it won't detect it or pop up on the desktop. It works on my laptop. How the heck do I get it back?! I have files I really need to transfer!
I would appreciate any info you can give. My i7 is my first Mac in 10 years and I am a bit lost.

As far as I know the drive should still appear as an icon on your Desktop even if you turned down Time Machine's request to use it as the TM backup drive. What's on the external drive right now? Is it just stuff that you dragged and dropped onto it for backup? But if you've used it as a Time Machine backup on your laptop then maybe that's part of the reason you're having difficulty getting it to show up.
P.S. If you want TM to ask you again if you want to use this external drive as a TM backup, go to Applications and open Time Machine and then go to Time Machine preferences and make the selection you desire.
    Regards,
    Steve M.

  • MacBook won't detect Toshiba 1T external hard drive

I just upgraded my operating system on my MacBook Pro and now my laptop won't detect my Toshiba 1T external hard drive, even though I've been using it before.  Any ideas?

Adam513, turned out the latest operating system doesn't read Microsoft formatted external hard drives the way it used to.  I had to purchase a new external hard drive, them find an apple computer with an older version operating system so I could transfer my files to the new external which is formatted for Mac.  The new external works fine and once I have all the files transferred, I'll reformat my old external hard drive.  Took me and the guy at the Genius Bar a while, but we finally figured this out.  Hope this helps!

  • ITunes won't detect my iPhone 4

I currently use a MacBook Pro with the 12.0.1 version of iTunes, however I also have an iPhone 4 and recently got an iPhone 5. In order to backup my iPhone 4 and put it onto the 5 i need to be able to sync, but iTunes won't detect my device (iPhone 4). I have completely uninstall iTunes so that I can install an older version that is compatible with my iPhone 4.
So my question is, what is the latest version of iTunes available that is compatible with the iPhone 4 software of 7.1?
    All help is appreciated, thanks.

For anyone else having this issue on OS X this post will fix it.
Steps 7, 8 and 9 may not be required in Snow Leopard.

  • 3429 - Won't detect Networking Devices (And can't manually force drivers)

Got an "old" 3429 from a friend who's been using it at their office for a few years - Did a complete re-format and installed Windows 8 on it.
But now it won't detect any of the network hardware (Ethernet OR Wireless) and I can't get it installed manually (not for lack of trying) by using the drivers listed on the driver download page for the computer.
Additionally - Can anyone tell me what kind of RAM limits this machine has? The specifications seem to be for a never revision of the Thinkcentre that claims the machine uses standard size DDR3 sticks, which doesn't correlate at all with mine - It has a single laptop sized RAM slot (SO-DIMM?)

I've double and triple checked everything now - Both adaptors are enabled in the BIOS, the Ethernet port shows yellow light when connected to the network and nothing appears in Device Manager for either adaptor (No matter how many times I tell it to scan for hardware changes - nor are they pre-installed and present in the list. Only the bluetooth connection is running)

  • Imac won't detect external harddrives

i have never had this problem before. my iMac used to pick up on my WD passport and other HDDs. but for the past two days it won't detect anything. not even a thumb drive. help!?

Is it just storage devices, or all USB peripherals?
Try shutting down and disconnecting all of your USB peripherals, except for your standard keyboard and mouse. Disconnect any USB hubs. Restart the Mac and only connect one USB storage device directly to your iMac. Does that one device work? Try it on all the ports, if one does not work.
You can also try starting up in Safe Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
in case there is some non-Apple system extension that is interfering with USB storage devices.

  • IMac won't detect SD card

My iMac won't detect any SD card's. It doesn't seem to matter the size (2GB-16GB) or brand, it is just like I haven't inserted one. I have never used one with it before so it isn't from failing to "safetly remove hardware" and I have tried cleaning the slot (with air can)

Have you checked to see if the SD card reader is listed in system profiler? (apple menu, about this mac, more info button) it should be  listed under Hardware, under USB, it would be labeled some thing like "Internal Memory Card Reader".
If the card reader isn't listed:
Have you tried a NVRAM Reset?
Have you tried a SMC Reset?
If the card reader is listed, but your not seeing the inserted cards:
Have you checked to see if the cards are reconised in Disk Utility? (go to the dock, click on finder, go to the menu bar, click on the go menu, chose Utilties, double click on disk utility) Do you see the sd card listed?
