Mac OS 9.1 - forgot password - reset

I would like to know how to access my OS 9.1 so that I can reset my forgotten admin password.
I do not have the startup disk but I can follow directions to reset the computer manually if someone can provide semi-detailed directions for me.
I read somewhere that the first step is to restart my computer while holding down the command key and the 's'. I tried this but I am getting a message that says 'there is not enough virtual memory to load with extentions enabled', or something like that, and it continues to another window where I have to either enter the owner's password (the one I don't remember) or shut down.
Alternatively, if a manual restart is not possible, I can download the startup disk if there is a working link someone can provide? That would be great too.

Okay.
The first one is probably a firmware password, and is more difficult to remove since it is hardware-based.
The second one, after the OS gas started to load, is probably a Multiple Users password. It's fairly easy to fix since it is software based.
You will need a bootable CD, one appropriate for that machine model. It need not be an OS install CD, thuogh that is best; it can be a utility CD, such as one for DiskWarrior or TechTool. If you happen to have a bootable external hard drive, that will work also.
Boot to the CD. Do not run any installer or other program on the CD - you just need to boot to it. The purpose is to get the machine booted to a volume other than the volume with the OS that needs fixing.
Once the machine is booted to the CD, open the System Folder on the internal drive. In that, open the Preferences folder. In that, look for a file named Multi-User Prefs. Drag it to the Trash. Empty the Trash.
Then do a normal restart. All Multiple User passowrds and requests for same should now be gone.
Not sure what the command you mention, Control-S or Command-S, is supposed to do. I'm not familiar with that for OS 9, and I know just about all OS 9 commands.
Your comment about getting a message stating
  ...there is not enough virtual memory to load with extentions enabled...
is a bit curious. A message such as that usually indicates that the hard drive is too full, and/or Virtual Memory has been set too high.

    Hello,
    You are correct the Mac OS X 10.5 MacBook disk will be little help to you. I'm surprised it booted to allow you into disk utilities. Your also correct that you would require the disk that came with the PowerBook.
    If you try holding down the option key, does that allow you to select your hard drive to boot from?
    I do think that you would need to reinstall the OS (Mac OS X 10.4) either using a retail copy of the disk or some replacement system disks. I doubt there is too much wrong with the hard drive itself.

    I recently created a new user account for my mac and deleted the old one, not realising that this was the only account with admin priveleges. As such, I no longer have access to administrator priveleges, and cannot grant them to my new user account.
    I have tried to boot in single user mode and recovery mode but neither command results in any reaction on the part of my computer.
    This thread follows on from a previous, unrelated disscussion:

    Yenots: No...what does this mean?
    BDAqua: If it did, it would mean Firmware Password Protection was enabled, which prevents booting in other modes, so that's not the problem, are you using a wired Mac KB, or Windows KB?

    Thanks for the link to MacPilot, and the sexy screenshot. I found an archived version for 10.4 on the koingosw website. That solves getting into single user/safe mode. Though I'd be interested to see whether sudo nvram boot-args="-s" will result in single user boot.
    As for creating administrator priveleges for my new user account, I've found a method which looks good:
         \single user mode\
         cmd-s
         \mount drive\
         mount -uw
         \open 'directory access'\
         lauchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.opendirectory.plist
         \list users\
         ls /Users
         \change password\
         dscl . passwd /Users/<username> <password>
    I think that this method intends that if I change the root users password I'll be changing the administrator password  (as root is the only user with administrator priveleges), and subsequently be able to change my new user accounts priveleges using 'netinfomanager'. But I'm not 100%. Could you give me your opinion on this?
    Furthermore, three keys 'L' 'O' and '(' aren't working on my keyboard, which means I can't try this until I find an intact keyboard to borrow. I was thinking maybe a mod version of the above instructions would work in terminal using sudo, so I could use the keyboard viewer to type the missing characters. If you have any ideas on constructing such a mod I would be interested to hear them.

    After updating profile, system show link of  "Forgot your password?" on Loing Page.
    When user click on this link system open another page which require username of forgotten password by submit button.
    User get notification on emial whether you want to approval or reject, if user approve then system just open another emial window and noting to be done.
    How can approve link send rest password notification to user. ( i tried to change inbound setting to 1 (804433.1) but system not allowing and raising an error on field "inbound server name" that unable to make network connection)
    Pls advice.

    I bought an AirPort Extreme a few years ago, and have my iPhone 4 connected to it. I bought my daughter a 5th generation iPod Touch for Christmas. I want to connect her iPod Touch to my WiFi, but cannot remember the password. Is there a way to reset it? Even if I have to reset it to factory settings, that's fine.

    First, make sure caps lock is not on.
    You must back up all data before continuing, unless you've already done so. If you need to back up but can't log in, ask for instructions.
    If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know the Apple ID password, then maybe the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
    Otherwise*, boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
    When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
    from the menu bar.
    In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
    Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
    Press return. A Reset Password window opens.
    Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
    Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
    Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
    You should now be able to log in with the new password, but your Keychain will be reset (empty.) If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it.

    While you can typically easily recover recently deleted files and there are companies that can even recover, to varying degrees of success, data from a damaged drive, there is no way to "recover" encrypted data as there is nothing to recover.  The data  hasn't been damaged.  Each individual bit has been changed.  With encryption, your files aren't simply "locked" with a password, but rather all of the data is actually changed.  So there is no way to "reset" the password like you would if you forgot your computers login password.  Without the password, there is no way to convert the data back to normal.

    Providing an incorrect password within the BlackBerry ID Edit feature on any BlackBerry device or BlackBerry PlayBook
    Note: if a user provides an incorrect password 5 times on the BlackBerry ID web portal (blackberry.com/blackberryid), and then 5 more times on the BlackBerry ID Edit feature on their BlackBerry PlayBook, the cumulative number of failed attempts is 10. Once the user has made 10 incorrect attempts to provide their password against the Account Server, they are locked out of the Account Server PERMANENTLY until they reset their password.

    Note: The Account Server Lockout does NOT prevent the user from local authenticating on devices  (the user can still authenticate on the sign in and verify password screens on their BlackBerry devices).
    Forgot Password Lockout
    If the user answers their Security Question incorrectly 10 times, they are locked out for 15 minutes of Forgot Password functionality on all interfaces such as:
    BlackBerry website (blackberry.com/blackberryid)
    BlackBerry PlayBook
    BlackBerry smartphone
    Note: After 15 minutes, they get 1 try, and if they fail to answer the question correctly, they are locked out for an additional 15 minutes.

    Enter the new password in the New BlackBerry ID Password and Confirm New Passwordfields.
    Select Submit to complete the password change.
    To confirm the change You have changed your password will be displayed.
    Also, if the BlackBerry ID password has been forgotten, select Forgot Password on the smartphone and answer the recovery question to generate a password reset email. Follow KB28685 to complete this process.
    Note: When using the recovery question password reset method, the generated email will be delivered to the BlackBerry 10 smartphone if the BlackBerry ID email address has been setup via Settings >Accounts
    From a computer:
    Visit http://www.bbid.com/ from a PC or BlackBerry smartphone browser.
    Click Log in.
    Enter the BlackBerry ID Username (email address) and password, then click Sign In.
    Click Account Details.
    Next to Password, click Edit.
    Enter in the current password, followed by the new password. Enter the new password again in the confirm password field, then click Save.
    Click Done to exit from the BlackBerry ID account information screens.
    From the BlackBerry smartphone running BlackBerry 6:
    Navigate to Options > Third Party Applications > BlackBerry ID.
    Click on Change next to BlackBerry ID Password.
    Enter in the current password, followed by the new password. Enter the new password again in the confirm password field, then click OK.
    A confirmation message will display Your password has been successfully changed.
    Click OK.
    From the BlackBerry smartphone running BlackBerry 7:
    Navigate to Options > Device > BlackBerry ID.
    Click on Change next to BlackBerry ID Password.
    Enter in the current password, followed by the new password. Enter the new password again in the confirm password field, then click OK .
    A confirmation message will display Your password has been successfully changed.
    Click OK.
    From the BlackBerry Playbook tablet:
    Navigate to the Options icon.
    Select BlackBerry ID.
    Click on the Edit button next to Change Password.
    Enter in the current password, followed by the new password. Enter the new password again in the confirm password field, then click Submit.
    A confirmation message will display You have changed your password.
    Click OK.
    If the password for a BlackBerry ID account has been forgotten and the login is unsuccessful, use the following process to reset the password.
    Note: If the BlackBerry ID account is not confirmed, it is necessary to provide the answer to the password recovery question as part of the web based password reset flow.  To see if a BlackBerry ID account is confirmed, login to the BlackBerry ID account, select Account Details and locate the Email Status field.  For instructions on confirming the BlackBerry ID account follow  KB34137.

Since the BlackBerry mail address is not accessible from a computer, the steps outlined in KB28111 will need to be performed.
    IT ALL LEADS BACK TO THE SAME UNHELPFUL NON-SOLUTION OF USE THE PASSWORD RECOVERY QUESTION.... 
    Can the tech department of Blackberry please sort out this ridiculous unhelpful system by sending customers a direct email if password is forgotten so they can reset without having to go through the above without finding a solution.

    Hopefully, this information will be of use to you.
    But do please keep in mind that security is a 2-way street...the human element play an equal part in that security, and you have failed at that in this situation, yet desire for the automated methods to still recover for you. Such just isn't possible, because your failure has exceeded the capabilities of the automated methods.
    Hence, you likely need human intervention from an actual BB representative, which is not available in this forum (as discussed in the first link I gave you above). But, the methods to attempt to seek human intervention are posted within the 2nd link I gave you.
