MAC OS 9.1 to MAC OS 10.4 Problems

Hi I have a PowerMac G4 running MAC OS 9.1. My friend just lent me a genuine copy of MAC OS 10.4 and i inserted the disk etc. It loaded the disk and got on to the installation process and just says 'Alert: This software cannot be installed on this computer' with the options of 'Restart' and 'Startup'. I really need to get 10.4 running anyone got any ideas cheers.

Hi joey!
The illegality that Andrew refers to, is the violation of the Software License Agreement.
" Permitted License Uses and Restrictions. This License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on a single computer at a time. This License does not allow the Apple Software to exist on more than one computer at a time,..."
Machine specific install disks info Tip: Install CDs/Use On Multiple Macs.
After you have purchased a Full Retail Version of the Tiger install DVD,
if you need CDs to install on your PowerMac G4, you can use the "Media Exchange Program"
" Tiger ships on a DVD, but if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you’ll need CD media. When you buy Mac OS X Tiger, you qualify to purchase Tiger CDs for only $9.95."
Download The Order Form
Also, before upgrading to any OS X version, check if your G4 needs a Firmware Update.
Good Luck!

The with Back to my Mac service on you see your mac in the Shared column, hit Share Screen & your good - on ARD I don't see my remote Mac listed anywhere in that program.
    Thanks

ARD, to the best of my knowledge, does not work via Back To My Mac. Certainly it's not an direct or obvious feature, though I can't say that there might not be a workaround I've not heard of.

How can I remove iCloud from my Mac Book and iPad and Mac Book Air and then just reload back on the MB Air and iPad only, which have a different user with a separate Apple ID?

You have quite muddied up the waters, I'm afraid. Assuming you now have a single GUID partition formatted Mac OS Extended, Journaled, you should try reinstalling Lion:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • HOW CAN I RESTORE MY ITUNES BACKUP FROM MY MAC BOOK TO MY DESKTOP MAC?

HOW CAN I RESTORE MY ITUNES IPHONE BACKUP FROM MY MAC BOOK TO MY DESKTOP MAC? THE REASON IS BECAUSE I HAVE TEXTFREE TEXT MESSAGES THAT I NEED FOR MY ATTORNEY AND WHEN I RESTORE IT FROM MY MACBOOK IT DOESNT INSTALL THE TEXTFREE BECAUSE I HAD DELETED ALL MY APPS IN ITUNES FROM IT. I HAVE ALL THE APPS ON MY DESKTOP MAC BUT I NEED TO KNOW HOW TO EXTRACT ONLY THE BACKUPS FROM THE MACBOOK AND IMPORT TO MY MAC DESKTOP. THE DESKTOP MAC IS THE ONE THAT HAS ALL OF MY LATEST BACKUPS. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP IF YOU KNOW THE ANSWER. THANKYOU

Easy. Copy it from the old Mac to the new one.
There are a variety of techniques including Setup Assistant (as soon as you get your new MacBook Air, it will ask you if you want to transfer information from another computer), Migration Assistant (if you elect to transfer information later), enabling file sharing between the two computers, or copying your music to a flash drive or other storage device followed by importing it to iTunes.
iTunes: How to move your music from one computer to another
Once your music library and everything else you want to transfer from the MacBook Pro resides on the new MBA, sync your iPod to the MBA. Sync the iPhone too when you get it, and they will both have identical iTunes music libraries.

You have to sign out completely in System Preference>iCloud (click 'Sign out') on a Mac, or Settings>iCloud on an iOS device (click 'Delete account' - this will not delete the account from the server). Then sign in with the new password.
Your iCloud data will disappear from your Mac or device when you sign out but will reappear when you sign back in.

    Hey Clintonfrombirmingham
I called Apple technical support in Denmark, but with no positive reply.
She couldn't do anything, and said that They had sent a recall Email about the problem and with their offer to repair the Macbook Pro, but I'd never recieved an Email about the problem. She wasn't in power to make an exception. It can't be true that i paid a lot of money, for a product that can't barely stand on its own feets, Apple didn't tell me that the product I was about to buy, would restart every 5 minute. and now when  they know the problem, they wont repair it? it just don't make sense for me. If a car seller discovers that all the brakes in a car he had sold, will crash after some years he will call all the cars back to repair no mater what. i just don't understand how Apple will make good service for their custumers, by extending the warranty from 2 to 3 years, but wont take the computers there is a little bit to old, 4 months will make the difference. i can't believe it.
    What can i do now?
    best regards Oskar

  • How to hook up Power Mac G4 to my i.Mac

Been browsing through discussions and Apple stuff, talked to support techs at Apple Care (with less than desired results), but still need help on how to do this.
Here's what I want to do: Get step-by-step instructions on how to hook up an "old" (think it was made in 1999) Power Mac G4 to my i.Mac computer.
    a) primarily to serve as back-up for my documents, pictures, music, etc., even programs if that can be done, and;
    b) actually use some of the old programs that are on that old G4 (i.e. Adobe Pagemaker)
    Here's what I have:
    1) a flat-panel i.Mac, 1 GHz PowerPC G4, 256 MB DDR SDRAM, using Panther;
    2) an old Power Mac G4 (the rather large, vertical hard drive) of which I know nothing about the specs....like memory, storage, or system it has, etc......at least until I can get into it. It's been sitting idle for about four years;
    3) a three-foot, 6-pin to 6-pin cable (Belkin) which I am told is what I need to connect the two computers via FireWire jacks.
So, presuming I have all that is needed to hook these two machines up, how do I proceed. A "1, 2, 3 instruction would be very much appreciated.
For example, should both computers be turned on "before" inserting the FireWire cable, or......should just the i.Mac be turned on, then insert the cable, then turn on the old Mac?
Once hooked up, and powered up, it's my understanding I'll see on icon for the old Mac on my i.Mac desktop. To copy files, I'm supposed to just drag and drop to the old Mac icon. Is that right?
Then to actually use the old Mac, I'm supposed to reboot my i.Mac, then hold down the "t" key just after the reboot "sound," or little circling icon, and I'll be in the old Mac? The screen will show everything on the "old" Mac? Is this right? Sounds simple enough, but.
If this is right and I'm actually in the old Mac, can I then sort and arrange documents I've dragged and dropped, and can I use programs that are already on that old Mac......like Pagemaker?
And, how do I get "out" of the old Mac and back into my i.Mac?
I see through discussions that I can apparently backup my entire i.Mac hard drive by going to the HD finder window and dragging and dropping my user folder icon (the little one that appears at the top and in the center of the Finder window, to the old Mac icon. Does that sound right?
I surely would appreciate some help on this. What I've got so far is piecemeal tidbits, nonsequential, and often, unclear.
Thanking anybody and everybody who might be inclined to help me out.

    Thank you A Brody,
This is all very helpful to a guy like me.
I guess the first thing I'll have to do is get an ethernet cable. Presumably, the FireWire cable will not be needed now. Correct?
The same questions still seem to apply. I did print out the "Connecting two computers using Ethernet" that you forwarded to me.
    1) But, do I power up both computers before installing Ethernet cable?
    2) After following instructions on the"Connecting two computers....." will an icon appear for the old Power Mac?
    3) After hooking up the Ethernet cable, do I have to re-boot, use the "T" key, to get into the old Power Mac?
    4) After fiddling around on the old Power Mac, how do I get out of there and back onto my i.Mac?
    5) Or, because it would be hooked up via Ethernet, could I simply go back and forth between the two computers?
By the way, after checking out your info on how to identify my old Power Mac, this is the info I've been able to glean, I think:
    The old Power Mac is:
    • A Power Mac G4 (PCI Graphics)........and therefore, it says, not able to serve as a target computer backup with my i.Mac
    • Apparently made in 1999
    • System, apparently, is OS 8.6 (my i.Mac is OS X 10.3.9...Panther)
    • Model number either M7631 or M7826 (can't find it on the computer)
    • Memory: PC 100 SDRAM, up to 1 GB (don't know how much it has now)
    • I have no idea how much storage is available (i.e. my i.Mac is 74.5 GB (I think)
    Thanking you again

  • Mac OS 8.6 and Mac OS 7.6 - Older Game Software - Need Help!

I am new owner of an iMac OS X 10.4.8 system and have children who are wanting some educational games software games for Christmas- I have found some on E-Bay (ie. Where In the World is Carmen San Diego) however, the requirements are OS 8.6–9.2, OS X.
In addition I would like purchase Emergency Room 3 by Legacy Interactive with the following requirements: MacOS 7.6 or later, 233MHz PowerPC or faster cpu, 32MB RAM, 16 bit color display, 16X or faster CD-ROM .
Question: If I purchase these games - will they operate properly on my Mac OS X (10.4.8)? Should I be prepared to experience any issues?
Hate to open them on Christmas morning and they not work.
    Please advise.
    Thanks in advance.

I have a lot of kids' software on CDs, bought over several years, and have since upgraded almost all the Macs to OS X.
On the slightly older G3, G4, or G5 Macs that preceded yours, when you tried to run CD software that was not OS X aware, it would cause the Mac to launch "Classic" -- an emulation of many (but not all) of the features of OS 9. That made most of the well-behaved CD software completely happy.
But my Macs can all still run Classic. Your Intel Mac can NOT run Classic.
Many vendors software requires the CD to be in the drive, but install a portion of the program onto the Hard Drive the first time it is run. It is therefore essential that the Administrator account is the one to first run the program. (If you have not already set up separate accounts for each of your kids, please do that now, even if you do not password them.)
If a CD says "OS X" it generally requires Mac OS X 10.2 or later, and will work fine on your Intel Mac.
If a CD says "OS 8.6–9.2, OS X" That means it requires a minimum of 8.6, but will also run under 9.1 or 9.2 or Classic or Mac OS X. Sometimes these programs will install a slightly different Hard Drive resident portion if installed under Mac OS X. If the program gives you a problem, the vendor's web site may set you straight with a quick download, which will modify the Hard Drive portion of the software to solve the problem.
If a CD says "7.6.1 or later", "8.5 or later", "9.1 or later" it has not acknowledged the existence of Mac OS X, and will not run on your Intel Mac. That is why the suggestion of getting a slightly older used Mac is a perfectly reasonable one.
It has always seemed bizarre to me that great kids software still followed the same cycle as new games. An initial rush at high prices, a slowing and discounts, and then not being able to find it anywhere. Great stuff like Reader Rabbit, Carmen SanDiego series, and the ClueFinders series, should never really "go out of style."
I am hoping that the coming of the new Microsoft Windows Vista Operating System for PCs will encourage educational software developers to "freshen" their best software for that environment, and that as long as they have it apart they will fix it up to run under Mac OS X, if they haven't done it already.
