hi i got my imac g3 off ebay and the hard drive is going i have on restore disk's can someone give me to a link to download a bootable mac os 9.2.2 os (i dont want to pay for it)

Call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775, provide the Serial Number and specifications of the Mac, and for a reasonable fee, they will supply a replacement set of system discs (if available).
The discs will be for the original version of the OS that was pre-installed when the Mac was manufactured.

    Anyway, what are my options here? Is there files I can download or a CD I can order?
    Further, how would I load the OS once I get it? Would it load off the disk automatically or is there a series of keys I'd have to press to start it loading?

    Mac OS 8.x to 10.3. I recommend 10.3. this will give you more of the Mac OS experience. you need 128 meg of memory.
    Make certain you can return the memory
    Mac OS X is a rather finicky when it comes to working with memory. While some memory sticks manufacturers may claim it meets the Mac OS X requirements, the memory may not work. You cannot tell until you try. From what I've have heard the memory fails immediately.
    Open Firmware, boot into Open Firmware.

    I believe with a tray loading iMac G3, you can use any level of the firmware. If you decide to load the firmware you will need a version of 8.x Mac OS.

    Hold down the c key then power on the machine.
    The tray loading iMac requires the boot partition to be within 8gig. Since there are hidden partition before the first visible partition, people recommend that you make the first visible partition 7.5 gig to 7.9gig. The machines support upto a 128gig Parallel ATA drive.
    Did you set the harddrive to master? Master is a must. Cable select doesn't work. You need to set the hard drive to master mode. There is usually a label on the hard drive that tells you what jumpers you need to set. If you are not sure, give us the name and model number of the hard drive and usually someone will be able to tell you how to set that drive.

  • How can I tell if I have the right restore disks for Intel Mac Mini

    I have an "early 2006" (confirmed by S/N YM609***) Intel Mac Mini 1.66mhz Core Duo. I bought it used and the hard drive had been wiped. Both the HD and the DVD drive seem to work fine; hard drive passes SMART tests. I was able to boot using "Drive Genius" and can access the pre-install items like Disk Utility (and know that I need to use GUID formatting to create a bootable disk). Not knowing I could order restore disks from Apple I bought a set on eBay, p/n AHT VERSION 3A102 DISC VERSION 1.1 2Z691-5828-A, copyright 2006 on disks and included documentation (OS 10.4.6), but the install always fails 10-15 minutes along. I got the same results when trying to install via internal optical drive to a FW or USB external HD (told it to use GUID for the external HD), or external FW optical drive both to internal HD and to external USB hard drive. A friend tried to install full retail versions of 10.5 and even 10.6 for diagnostic purposes, using the built in HD and DVD drives, but those installs did not complete either; they did not try external drives. Is that the wrong restore version for this model, or even if the right "generation", does a set of restore disks only work with the specific Mac mini they were issued for like for example XP restore disks would? I've been told I can provide my s/n to Apple and for about $30 they will send me the "right" restore disks... anyone know anything about this? Could there be a hardware/firmware explanation for why the install fails like that? PS ran the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test with that restore disk set and it reported "no problems."

    Thanks. Actually I got the Mini from a computer recycling company I work with so I knew it might have problems and that I was taking an "as-is" risk. If the original disks were turned in with it, they'd been lost (that outfit took in huge piles of stuff every day; it was often luck of the draw for me to find something before it would be buried, damaged, etc., and not everyone who worked there had any idea of the possible value of things they received) for me to find things. The disks I got on eBay apparently were separated from the mini they'd been packaged for. An Apple Store rep said I could order restore direct from Apple just by providing my serial number; just wish I'd known that before I went to eBay. Since posting this I've seen another seller specifically claiming that the same-part-numbered-as-mine disc set they are selling will work with my specific type of Mac mini. I have an appointment tomorrow morning at the Genius Bar at an Apple store near me in case they have more suggestions. Will share what I know as things develop.

  • Power Mac G4 no iMovie and no restore disk

    I purchased a used Power Mac G4.  It is running OS 10.4
    The problem is that it does not have iMovie installed.  Online help states that I need the restore disk, which I don't have.  Is there a way to get it, or is there another alternative?
    The other problem is that updating the software requires a password from the former owner.  The machine boots to desktop without a password, it's just needed for updating Safari.  Is there a way to reset that?
    The machine is in other wise fine shape and I'd like to make it useful.

    iMovie is part of iLife. You should be able to purchase the relavent version on eBay or Amazon.

    Also, look through all the packaging carefully--there may be a tiny square box that has them hidden away.

    I am new to the forum and I have searched the topics for quite some time but have not quite found an answer so please forgive any redundancy.
    I have a 9 month old MacBook Pro which shipped with a Leopard upgrade disk. I have tried to do a clean install using the 10.4 disk and then the upgrade disk again but I keep getting an error on install saying the disk is corrupted. I think it may have been scratched.
    I am wondering if there is a way to get a Leopard restore disk without purchasing a retail Leopard? When I called Apple the lady said she did not know and they would call me back in 48 hrs. I have not heard yet and am wondering if anyone has any experience with this. Thank you very much!

    Sometimes a copy of a disk is "better" than a scratched or damaged original.
    You might copy the install disk. Copying reads and rereads marginal areas on disks and sometimes results in a disk that works when the original does not.
    It's worth a try.

  • I have a Mid 2009 Macbook Pro 13 with no restore disk; it has OS 10.8.4 I believe there is something wrong with the OS due to I can not install flash player to view Youtube videos and the when we plug in a Bose headset the sound out will work sometimes

    When trying to view some youtube videos; a window would pop up saying "it needs adobe flash player is required for video play back get the latest flash player" but after downloading the file and during installation would have errors and will not installed.....tried to reboot and install again.....but still the same.
    The othe thing I had noticed is when using a good Bose headset with mic the sound output would noticed the headset and then switch from headset to Internal speekers and headset.....thinking that there might be something wrong with the plug in port of the computer or the headset.....the headset works with no issues on my iPad so there must be something wrong with the computer.....tried to move the plugin around the port but no change....while the headset is plug in can hear a short clicking noise and the sound would get lost and back again......but with nothing plugin to the port there is no issue with the sound or mic.

    The "restore disk" is built into the Mac. See About Recovery.
    Need more specifics about what error messages you got while installing Adobe Flash.
    However, you can almost avoid Flash altogether by setting YouTube to play the HTML5 version instead.
    Click the Try something new! link at the bottom of the YouTube page.
    I don't know about the sound issue. Might be hardware as you think. Try other headphones to check.

    Get onto the integrated iOS + Mac OS and end support for "legacy" Mac 10.8 and earlier.
    Force older hardware users like me to upgrade to new hardware which is where $$ are.
    Make apps work across tablets, phone, and computer with similar (though not the "same" app, but able to read and use the same file format).
    Simplify.
    I don't think anyone incl. Microsoft knew Windows 8.1 was going to be a free upgrade, I didn't and read that it would be more like $30.
    No OS is ready for everyone on the day it is launched. iOS 7 is now 7.04 and climbing, Mac OS tends to really not be ready until the last patch and version is out, often a year or more after it was first issued. Ship it, then plan to fix the bugs left in or that surface.
    www.macperformanceguide.com is saying "No" to Maverick for now. Of course there will be no "No" on new Mac Pro 2013 6,1 when those ship (Late Jan? )

    with bootcamp in yosemite 10.10
    i continually get the message  'your disk could not be partitioned', does anyone know how to tackle this? *I am including the screenshot
    and when i try to partition my 250GB drive giving 80GB to the windows partition it just errors,
    i have tried rebooting and verifying my disk and repairing and there's no progress or change.. any ideas would be greatly appreciated

    Welcome to the Support Communities!  The steps you have taken to troubleshoot the issue of not being able to create a Windows partition are good ones.  The resource below provides another possible scenario that may be the issue here.  It's not the exact error message as your screen shot and the article references Windows 8, but the troubleshooting steps are still relevant:

    This symptom may occur if you have partitions on your startup drive in addition to the following:
    one OS X partition
    one Boot Camp partition
    one OS X Recovery partition (normally not visible in Disk Utility)
    If Boot Camp Assistant detects a Microsoft Reserved (MSR) or Windows Recovery partition on your hard drive, you may see this message.  The Boot Camp Assistant cannot continue until the extra partition is removed.
    Microsoft Reserved and Windows Recovery partitions can be identified as unmounted partitions with the name "disk0s3" or "disk0s5" in Disk Utility. To remove these partitions, use OS X Disk Utility.
    Important: Deleting the wrong partition can cause data loss. Be sure to back up both your OS X files and Windows files before attempting this procedure.

    Click the Partition tab.
    Look for an extra partition named “disk0s3" or “disk0s5”. Select this partition so it is highlighted.

    Before you can install Windows your Mac, you need to create and then format a Windows partition.

    If you need help determining the best size of the partition, refer to your Windows documentation. For Windows 8, the partition should be at least 30 GB. 
    If Boot Camp Assistant says that verification failed, repair the drive using Disk Utility. If that doesn't help, back up your drive and reinstall OS X.
    The drive you're partitioning must be an internal drive. If you have more than one internal drive and the drive you're partitioning is not in the first drive bay, remove the drives in the lower-numbered bays, then reinstall them after installing Windows. A Fusion Drive is treated as one drive, and the Windows partition is created on the disk drive instead of the flash drive (SSD).
    Format the Windows partition
    Use the Windows installer to format the Windows partition that Boot Camp Assistant created. When you're asked where to install Windows, select the partition named "BOOTCAMP":
    Then click Format to begin formatting the partition using the NTFS file system. If you're installing Windows 7 or Windows 8.0, you won't see the Format option until you click "Drive options (advanced)":
    If the installer says that it couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one, disconnect any Thunderbolt storage devices connected to your Mac. Reconnect them after installing Windows.
    If you see “No Boot Disk Attached” when starting up your Mac, the Windows partition probably isn't formatted correctly. Remove the partition, then repeat the previous steps for creating and formatting the partition.
    Modify the Windows partition
    Remove the partition, change its size, or change its name.

  • New hard drive, Leopard upgrade, restore disks needed?

    I have a macbook which shipped with Tiger and ilife 06.
    Several months ago I upgraded to Leopard and ilife 08 - both great.
    Now I want to upgrade my hard drive to a bigger one, so I just need a bit of advice please.
    There is plenty of advice here and on the apple support site about how to upgrade your hard drive, but not when you have upgraded the OS.
    The simplest way would be to use CCC to clone it, but I want a clean install. I hope that I don't have to use the restore disks, then upgrade both OSX and ilife - that would be painful!
    Anyway, here goes.
    I have a SATA enclosure.
    What is the best way to proceed? Do I need either of the restore disks that came with the macbook, or do I just need the new Leopard and ilife (retail) upgrade disks?
    I am happy with taking the old drive out (after doing a last time machine backup - just in case!) and putting it into the external enclosure and putting the new drive in the macbook.
    Then, what is the best way to restore my data? Time machine? Migration assistant? Dragging and dropping everything? (what about preferences & settings?)

    Thanks - do I need the old restore disks that came with the mac at all, or are they just Tiger, ilife 06 and a bit of free software, therefore not needed. I am a little concerned that they contain some drivers etc that i might need.

    Hello, I recently acquired a powerbook 15 inch g4 1Ghz laptop. I dont know alot about apple laptops. It did not come with any system disks. I wanted to do a complete harddrive wipe and use a system install/restore disk to start with a fresh hard drive. What restore disks do I need to do this. The laptop has a superdrive. Will any system install/restore disk work if it says "15 inch powerbook". Or is there only one specific /original disk that will work with it. Thanks Dave

    Hi, David, and welcome to Apple Discussions. A 15" PB G4 could be either the last Titanium model, with most of its ports on the back, or the first 15" Aluminum model, with all its ports on its end panels.
    Your best bet in either case may be to buy a retail OS X installer disc set. Either model mentioned above can comfortably run the latest version of OS X 10.4.x ("Tiger"), though if you now have only 256MB of installed RAM, you'll soon want to add more to make Tiger really happy. Alternatively, either model could also run OS X 10.3.x ("Panther"), which would be a bit less expensive now that it's not the latest and greatest version. But if I were you, I'd buy Tiger and be up to date from the outset.
    Duplicates of the original discs that were shipped with the Powerbook when it was new may (or may not) still be available for a nominal fee directly from Apple — by phone only, not through the online Apple Store. But those discs will install OS X 10.2.x ("Jaguar"), an earlier and markedly inferior OS version. You would then have to purchase the upgrade to 10.3.x or 10.4.x if you decided you wanted it later. Better to start right off with it.
    Do NOT buy an OS installer set that is specific to (was originally shipped with) any Mac model other than yours. It is very likely not to install at all, and if it does, the installation is apt to be flaky or nonfunctional. You should consider ONLY a retail set, or a duplicate of the original set that went with your PB when it was new.

    I just purchased a new 13" Macbook Pro and there are no restore disks. How can I make some?

    Easy way is to take an external HD and make a bootable CLONE.
    1. grab carbon copy cloner or (my fave) superDuper CLONE app.
    2. attach target clone drive via USB in an enclosure or HD dock. Firstly format the target (external new) HD in disk utility in “Mac OS extended journaled”
    3. clone internal HD to target HD (external)   [takes about 40 mins depending on size]
    4. Boot ONCE from external (go to sys. preference to boot from external) to TEST the new Clone
    if your HD crashes, you can be up and running in SECONDS.
    This is the option the pros use for quick restore from a serious crash.
    **Remember of course, youll need otherwise saves of your data that come AFTER the clone.
    Either that or regularly make a CLONE.
    Another option is time machine, but it cannot be booted from.

  • Wrong Restore Disks? (iBook G4 800MHz - 10.3)

    Hi all, I hope someone can help me with this...
    I just bought a used iBook G4 and received the complete package of Restore Disks. OS X 10.3 installed perfectly, but when I tried to restore the rest of the software, I got a "Wrong Disk" dialog box saying the discs I have won't work with my iBook. I'm sure they're the ones that came with the iBook originally (the guy I bought it from didn't own any other Macs, and they're clearly marked "iBook G4"), so I can't think what else would be wrong. I did rename the hard drive after installing Panther, but I can't see how that would have caused the problem.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    To be more specific, the Software Restore utility installed perfectly, but when it started up and checked the disc, it spit the disc out claiming I had the wrong discs (it was the disc marked with a circled "1", so I didn't just have the wrong disc number in there since 1 was what it was asking for).
    UPDATE: I just noticed that the OS X discs were version 10.3.3, so it's possible that the guy replaced the original OS X install discs with the 10.3.3 discs. Maybe Software Restore can't work when the OS is a newer version than what the utility was expecting. I'll look further into this, but it may be nothing. For all I know the machine shipped with 10.3.3 originally.

    Well I can't see how he did that because this is the only Mac he owns. I even installed OS X 3.0 and it still didn't work, although I see that it's the Restore Disks and not the OS. My only other guess is that he bought the machine used with the software already installed and just never found out that he had the wrong restore disks. I don't think that's the case, because I think this iBook was purchased through a university so it would have been brand new.
    I'm not terribly concerned because I doubt I'll ever need Classic or any of the original software (Quicken, games, etc.), but at the very least I wish I could find out what exactly is on those discs (there are 9 of them). It would be great if there were a way to trick Software Restore into accepting the discs, so if anyone knows please tell me. Failing that, does anyone know if Apple can provide me with the correct discs if I send these back?
    The only odd thing that happened during the OS X install is when the dialog box popped up saying "OS X needs to run a program to see if it can be installed" I clicked Continue and it didn't seem that any program started, it just continued with the installation. I was thinking that maybe that program left an identifier that Software Update used to check whether it could run or not, and if that didn't happen, the utility would think it was not the right machine. My other theory was that the firmware had been upgraded at some point and now Software Update saw the machine as the wrong one for the discs, but I guess that would be silly since no matter how many upgrades you do you should still be able to restore your software.
    I'm sure what you say is probably true, but it just seems nearly impossible that the guy gave me the wrong discs. I can see that if it's someone with a bunch of different Macs around like an Apple dealer or something, but other than a b&w G3, this was the only Mac the guy ever owned, and I know he wouldn't lie about that.
    This is so weird, but like I said it's really no big deal. Just looking forward to getting this settled so I can start putting other apps on it and doing some real work with it. Unless someone else has a different take, I guess my question has been answered.
    As a last-ditch effort though, I should mention that the machine has a 1GB RAM upgrade and an Airport Extreme card. Would either of those have to be removed before running Software Restore? Hey, it's not that I don't believe Doug, it's just that the answer I'm gonna get is "Well, those are the discs that came with it", so even if Doug's right (and I suspect he is), that's a dead end. If there is any way to at least see what these discs contain (like, say, a complete listing of bundled software for the iBook G4 that these were intended for) that would be helpful since I'd know what I'm missing and I'd be sure there wasn't anything I really needed. I even downloaded Pacifist, but of course since you can't even see the packages on these discs, it wouldn't work.
    Thanks Doug for the reply, and to anyone else who might be able to offer a workaround or other advice. At the very least, a list of what is on the RIGHT Software Restore discs and/or what's on these would definitely help me get on with my life, so to speak.

    That doesn't mean you cannot be helpful here. People come here for help and most people here are pretty helpfule and curteious. Perhaps forums in the windows world are more casutic and you can project an attitude but this apple forum is reallly good because of the helpful people. Lets try to keep that going without copping an attitude.
    btw as noted the manual really doesn't say anything about two disks so telling the to RTFM is even more pointless.
