Mac OS 9, ATM 4.6 - special characters missing in PS output

Hi there,
I'm working on some legacy files in OS 9 and I'm having a strange problem...
On screen all looks fine, but when attempting to print to a PS printer or generating a PDF all upper ascii characters (accented etc.) just disappear leaving blank spaces.
The font is Gill Sans Type 1 and all applications are affected. Switching to a different version of Gill Sans has no effect, but switching to a different font cures the problem. In ATM the fonts check out fine and I've tried to ditch printing related preferences, but to no avail.
What could be the cause of this? Does ATM hang on to cache files somewhere?
Any help would be very much appreciated.

You left out a whole bunch of vital information.
What version of Mac OS 9? Hopefully 9.2.2.
Most especially, what kind of files are they? What application generated them (exact version)? What is the file format?
Are you using ATM DeLuxe 4.6.2 or ATM Light?
What version of the Adobe PS Printing Library and of the AdobePS Extension? Hopefully 8.7.2 for both.
Do you have access to fresh copies of the font? Where did you buy those fonts? Is it possible that the font you have installed lacks those glyphs and that you're looking at font substitution on screen? Just asking.
Details are needed.

Unwanted / Special Characters in XML File Output

Hello Seniors,
I am downloading an XML File which has some code from include's. The XML file is well formatted and the output is fine when I downloaded programs. But this include is from user exits and the code has some commented lines in it also with a blank line in between. Now the problem is that I am getting a "VT" in the XML file which is an unwanted character where there is a blank line in the include "ZXRSAU01". Other than this include, all other includes are downloaded fine.
Here is the code from the include "ZXRSAU01":
     select single * from knvv where kunnr = l_s_icctrcst-kunnr
                                and vkorg = l_s_icctrcst-vkorg
                                and vtweg = l_s_icctrcst-vtweg
                                and spart = l_s_icctrcst-spart.
Here is the output in the XML File:
     select single * from knvv where kunnr = l_s_icctrcst-kunnr
                                and vkorg = l_s_icctrcst-vkorg VT
                                and vtweg = l_s_icctrcst-vtweg
                                and spart = l_s_icctrcst-spart.

Firstly, Thank You for the reply. We cannot remove the space in that include because the system is not the original system. Please let me inform you that this is a 4.6C system. We have used CDATA to get the code as it is onto the XML file. I observed that, firstly, the character "#" has come into the internal table with the read report itself. In the debug I saw it to be "0B" in the binary format, but in the downloaded XML file output, it is displayed as "VT". Please let me know how to get rid of this special/unwanted character.

Which OS are you using?
There are numerous firmware updates available.
Are you certain about that?
the ~ is part of the standard ASCII character set.
Try looking in the printer's menu.

Removing Special characters in OBIEE report output

Hi All,
I have a scenario where one of the my column outputs are
EROOR MSG DESC
detail_mismatch
detail_mis
Detail Mismatch .
Above three values have the same meaning.Is there any way i can name all three values with the unique name in OBIEE .(I know we can do that in Database level but is there any way in obiee ??)

Either use a case statement or use a combination of replace and upper case to translate all three to the same thing.

Mac file name restrictions/special characters

What are the Mac OS file name restrictions? What are the special characters to avoid?
Is this a legitimate file name? Are the colons allowed?

A user tried to provide a file with a name similar to that in my original post (e.g. "name 3:4:07.rtf") using a web form, and I'm at a loss as to how they could have saved it with the colons. Thank you for your assistance.

Special Characters viewing in PC Ultraedit and not in MAC Textwrangler

Hello everybody,
I had a difficulty in viewing special characters in PC Ultraedit vs MAC Textwranger in a InDesign tagged text file.
When the open the InDesign tagged file in PC Ultraedit, all special characters are viewing in a correct format. But the same tagged text file open in MAC Textwranger, this special characters are in a form of junk characters.
Please anybody know whats the issue. If you have answers for this issue, please share with me. Its very helpful for us.

PDF with special characters (é, ñ) needs to be legible cross-platform(mac & pc)

I am using Illustrator to design a PDF. Because it's in Spanish, accent marks and other special characters are needed (á, ñ).
When I export the PDF from the ai file and view it on my mac it looks fine. However, when I open it on a pc some of the special characters are completely missing.
I tried Creating Outlines with the text, although it will make it harder to update in the future and so less preferable to leaving the text editable. Creating Outlines works fine on the mac, however on the pc the L's appear thicker than they actually are.
Does anyone know how to make special characters legible cross-platform when creating a PDF using Illustrator?

Yes. You use a correct OpenType font that has the glyphs in the place where they belong and can be embedded without limitations. Older TrueType or PostScript fonts are simply unsuitable as are fonts that cannot be emebdded and require to be installed locally. It all comes down to system language settings vs. the unified environment inside acrobat. This also requires any PDF to be created on systems with the language settings correct in the first place, i.e. creating Spanish text with a Japanese version of AI would be pretty desastrous due to how foreign language fonts are accessed... check these things and then try again. If possible, enforce embedding of the full font in the PDF settings, not just a subset and choose a suitable font.

Problem with Icelandic special characters on Mac

Hello
I am working on a Flash publication for students, and I want it to run on Mac as well as PC. Everything goes fine, except a problem with three special characters in my language, Icelandic. I am working on a registration and login page where I am using text boxes and text input boxes. Everything looks correct on PC, but on Mac the characters Þ Ð Ý are lost.
I have tried different fonts etc.
Any idea what is wrong?

I have a similar problem except only with two letters (both upper and lower case). These two Icelandic letters can't be entered into a Flex TextInput box in the Flex apps I am creating when they are loaded on a Mac. The letters are known as &Eth, &eth, &Thorn and &thorn in HTML terminology. Typing these characters on the keyboard results in the following: { [ ? /
However I can copy the characters in question from some other app like TextEdit and paste them into a TextInput box in my Flex app and all is well, they show up correctly.
This happens regardless of the Mac browser used and the Flash plugin version used (have tried both 9 and 10) and also happens in the standalone Flash Player application.
Does anyone have any idea how to fix this or is this a bug in Flash Player ? This is really annoying as it makes text input into Flex apps on Icelandic Macs very difficult.
There must be something wrong with the mapping of keyboard key codes into character codes on the Mac that is causing this.
Btw, I just heard from a friend that this problem does not exist in MacOS 10.6. I am running 10.4 and have tested this on 10.5 and it exists on both of those OS versions.

Special Characters on Mac

I'm taking an online math class and I'm trying to figure out how to type the squared symbol using my mac. I looked in my owners manual and looked in my system preferences trying to find special characters but I haven't been able to find any. Does anywhere know if this can be done and where I can find it?

If you are talking about the 2 in x², it has unicode number 00B2, and can be found in the Character Palette. I'm afraid I don't know of any generic keyboard shortcut to get to it, but there may be shortcuts in the program you use to create a superscript instead.
In TextEdit you use the menus Font > Baseline > Superscript. In MS Word it is in the Font dialog and as an icon in the Formatting Palette, but you could also build a macro to insert it.
Some fonts have superscript included in the typography panel. In (for example) TextEdit choose Format > Font. Select (for example) Zapfino. Click on the little wheel in the bottom left corner of the font palette and select Typography. In the Typography panel choose "Vertical Position" and Superscript. The advantage with this solution is that the layout gets clean. The problems are that a) it is cumbersome to get to, b) the superscript will disappear if you later choose to use another font like Times.

Mac OSX's "press and hold" shortcut to special characters won't work in Firefox.

Need to use accented special characters (áéö...) to write in my mother tongue. On Mac OS X 10.8.3 this can be done by simply pressing and holding a key and then selecting the right character from a list that shows up. It functions well in Safari and in Chrome but no success in Firefox 21.0. This makes Firefox a no-go although otherwise a great browser.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

HTML Editor - converting "special characters" into entities

Hi everyone,
I'm currently in the middle of formatting my wife's novel into 'clean' html so I can use Calibre to create a well formatted epub/mobi/etc.
I've read that TextMate on Mac includes a function to "Convert Selection to Entities excluding Tags". In other words it will replace all special characters (ellipses, copyright sign, etc) with the html entities.
I'm currently using Kate and I can't seem to find anything similar. Is anyone aware of any linux editors with the same function?

Special characters in Lion

The ease of use of special characters has been a major strength of the Mac OS since the very foundation. Now I find in Lion I hvae to do a very Windoze-like thing and open a Special Characters dialog and search for the character I want from a confusing jumble of them. The use of apple-e for an accent egu was intuitie for me the first time I discovered it, and nearly all accents and special characters were easy for me to figure out without resorting to a separate window. (http://support.apple.com/kb/PH3871) It wasn't broke--why did they fix it?

It has never been apple-e. It has always been alt/option-e. Does that really not work for you now? It certainly does for me.

Special Characters in imported HTML

I've got a Flash piece where the user fills out a
questionnaire, and based on their responses, they are shown a
handful of recommendations. These recommendations are all separate
HTML files that load into a scrolling text field as HTML text.
There is an English version and a Spanish version. The
English version works fine.
In the Spanish version, on the other hand, we've got special
characters such as accents over e's, tildes over n's, and so forth.
In the HTML, I've used codes for special characters, such as
ñ for ñ. That didn't work. In the resulting
recommendations, this code appears, not the ñ.
Then I tried just putting the special characters into the
HTML, without the special code. That looks fine on my computer (Mac
G5 running Firefox), but on Windows IE instead of the special
characters, we get one of those diamond shapes with a "?" in the
middle of it.
In my recommendations field, I have it set to embed all
characters. The font is Verdana, which should include the special
characters. Does anyone know if the display of special characters
in Flash is possible, and how I would do it?

add <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> tag to 1st
line of your xml, AND
save your xml file encoding as utf-8, if you are using
notepad, try this:
- save as, change the encoding (the bottom field) to UTF-8
no worry about your file extension.
UTF-8 (8-bit Unicode Transformation Format) supports multiple
languages.
