Mac OS 9 shuts down before it opens

I keep getting an error message 1010 and then Mac OS 9 shuts down completely. The screen says to restart and hold down the shift key. I do this and it hasn't helped. Please help me.

stovecat,
boot from your OS 9 system CD ( hold down C ) and run first aid on the hard disk.

  • Logic shut down before it opens

I have a problem with logic on my macbook. When I start it I get a warning sign that says that the application shut down unexpected ( I don't know exactly what the warning sign says in English since it's on Swedish on my compute ).
The things I've done so far is:
    - Repaired the disk and the disk authorities (once again, don't know if that's what it's called in English)
    - I used AppDelete to throw away Logic and then I installed it again, and I still get the same message, that it shuts down before it even opened.
Does anyone know what to do? Please help me!

If Jim's suggestion doesn't work, and Logic still crashes, copy and paste the crash log into a new message here.
If you don't know how, open "Console" in your utilities folder. Click the 'Logs' icon. You'll see an item under ~/Library/Logs named 'CrashReporter' and you'll find the "Logic Pro crash.log'
Find the beginning of the latest log (they're dated) and copy and paste the complete log for that date into your message. Sometimes (but not always) there's a clue in there about a bad plug-in, or a failed attempt to load a particular resource, which might help us suggest a solution.

  • My mac pro (2008) shuts down before it can boot

Hi, my mac Pro doesn't starts anymore. This morning it tried to boot but after 10/15 seconds it shut down. Now it doesn't even starts anymore. I already tried all the reset process but nothing happened. Is it a dead logic board or can it be something else? I have this mac since 2008 and never had problems before. Also I never changed or added RAM or else, I only substitute the DVD/CD reader about one year ago without problems. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Buy some RAM, a couple extra drives. For backup, to clone OS X,, drives fail, and they get faster and better. Most people upgrade and have 4 internal and some external drives, plus the default RAM is only enough to boot and run one or two small basic apps. 4GB should be minimum and 8GB will help anyone.
Use your 10.6 DVD but I would do a clean install on a new drive.
    Then use Setup Assistant.
    Repair your old drive.
    Start cloning your good system.
    Setup TimeMachine.
Safe Boot is a good first step.
Not sure what reset processes but I assume you mean you reset SMC and zap PRAM
Try booting from OS X DVD - and if you have trouble, then remove any and all internal drives and unplug everything but the kb/mouse.

  • Some Apps shutting down before they open.

This is the report I get when trying to open Word or any other Microsoft program, or Quicken, which came pre-installed on my iMac. Mail still works as does Firefox and Photoshop and other things, but it won't even open The Office or Quicken. This has been going on for the past 2 weeks.
    Thanks,

Rosetta may be the cause; I'm sure there are other possibilities. Rosetta is only used when you run old programs that were written for PowerPC Macs. Newer programs are universal so Rosetta is not used. Office 2008 is universal. Office 2004 is PowerPC.
You can do a Get Info in the program file. If the Kind is +Application (Universal)+ or +Application (Intel)+, then Rosetta is not being used. If it says +Application (PowerPC)+ or just Application, the Mac is using Rosetta to translate the PowerPC code to Intel.
Do the other Office 2004 programs also fail?
If it is related to those apps being PowerPC, I found this

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Select "system.log" from the file list. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the times of the log messages referring to boot times. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the time of the most recent boot when you had the problem. Post the messages logged during the time when you had the problem – the text, please, not a screenshot. For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time. If the problem is a crash or a shutdown hang, post the messages from before the boot time, when the system was about to crash or was failing to shut down.
Edit out excessive repeats and personal information, if any.
If the log doesn't go back far enough in time, scroll down in the Console file list to /private/var/log/system.log.0.bz2. Search the archived log, and if necessary the older ones below them, for the same information.
    Step 2
    Do the same with kernel.log.
    Step 3
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please do not post shutdownStall or hang logs – they're very long and not helpful.

Has it worked before or is this the first time you have tried using it?

  • My Mac won't shut down after upgrading to Panther

I recently upgraded to Panther 10.3 from Jaguar 10.2.9. After Panther had installed successfully, I used software update and I'm now running Panther 10.3.9. However, since then my Mac won't shut down. It doesn't hang or freeze - it just does nothing at all.
I've made sure no applications are running or have frozen. I've tried booting up from the OS X disk and running Disk Repair, and I've also tried using the 'fsck' tool. (I entered '/sbin/fsck -f' in single-user mode). Nothing has worked.
Now each time I want to shut down, I have to force shut down. Can anyone help?
    800 MHz PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   1.5 GB SDRAM

Hard shutdowns can cause disk damage. You are better off leaving your Mac on until the problem is sorted.
Have you disconnected all peripheral devices (unmount firewire drives before disconnecting) except Apple keyboard and mouse and tried shutdown? Often peripherals can kick back a signal to the cpu preventing shutdown.

  • Mac mini keeps shutting down for no reason

My mac mini keeps shutting down for no reason. If I try to turn it on right after it shuts down, it won't or I may hear a chine, power light lit up for about 5 seconds and turns off. I have to wait a while before it would turn on again. And sometimes it stays on for 15 min, 2 hrs or 1 full night ... but then the cycle happens again.

Make sure the power cord is attached firmly to the back of the Mini. If so, try a clean install of Snow Leopard (or whatever version of OS X it came with). If neither of those suggestions works, it's likely a bad power supply, in which case you'll need to take it to an Apple store or call Apple support.
