  • External Mounted Hard Drive Icon Not Showing on Desktop nor on Sidebar

    Bonjour,
I have a portable drive that does NOT show up in the Sidebar nor on the Desktop. The only way I can see and navigate through it is by clicking in Disk Utility > Mount Point: <hyper-link>
Then hard drive icon and its content show up fine. But the HD icon is slightly dimmed (it is paler than the all other - HD, computer, etc - icons).
I verified the external HD and it is just fine. I have another eDrive (TechTool Pro 4) partition and it shows up like any normal HDs normally does.
How can I get the icon to show up back into the Sidebar and the Desktop?
Is there a "Preference" file I need to throw out?
Is there a UNIX command I could execute to make it show up again?
    Thanks for your assistance.

Open the Script Editor in the /Applications/AppleScript/ folder and run the following:
    tell application "System Events"
set visible of (choose folder with invisibles) to false
    end tell
When prompted, select your hard disk in the dialog box. Next, log out and back in.

  • External HDD does not show on desktop

My iMac (see config info) went to the local Apple authorized repair place. It took almost 4 weeks(!) for them to get the parts from Apple, but they replaced the power supply and DC to DC board.
So, I get it back and all is fine... except:
I have an external 80GB LaCie ("Porche") HDD which I use for backup.
It does not appear on the desktop.
When I connect it to another (even older) Mac, it works fine.
So I try all combinations of disconnecting, and powering down things, including unplugging the Mac for 30mins, but no luck.
    Any ideas, folks?

    More info...
I have rechecked and both iMac FireWire ports work fine with a video camera.
The external LaCie FW hard disk drive consistently does not appear on the iMac, even trying both iMac FW ports. As recently as 2006-06-19, it worked fine.
The external drive consistently shows up when connected to another Mac.
These facts taken together would seem to imply a software problem on the iMac.
I downloaded and ran the "LaCie Update Tool v1.3.3 for Mac OS X" and even it could not locate the external drive:
"LaCie Update Tool found nothing that needs updating. (Examined 0 FireWire and 0 USB drives)"
I have had the external drive turned off since 2006-06-19. Since then, I have done the following software updates:
    2006-06-29 11:36:22 -0400: Installed "QuickTime" (7.1.2)
    2006-06-29 11:38:12 -0400: Installed "Mac OS X Update (PowerPC)" (10.4.7)
    2006-06-30 19:48:06 -0400: Installed "iPod Updater 2006-06-28" ( )
    2006-06-30 19:48:24 -0400: Installed "iTunes" (6.0.5)
    2006-08-08 19:43:46 -0400: Installed "Security Update 2006-004 (PowerPC)" (1.0)
Could the update from OS 10.4.6 to 10.4.7 be relevant?

  • Problem with Time Machine or ext HDD?

I am using a Western Digital Firewire800 ext HDD for my Time Machine back ups. In the past the ext HDD will turn on by itself when my iMac is turned on and the light remains on. Of late I notice sometimes the light turns off and the ext HDD icon on the desktop disappears. I would need to press the power button on the HDD for the light to come back on and the desktop icon to re-appear.
More importantly, in the past Time Machine will auto back up every one hour. It no longer does that. I made an effort to pay close attention yesterday. TM said that the next back up was scheduled for 2.54pm. When it was 2.54pm, even though the ext HDD light was on & the desktop icon was there, TM did not to an auto backup. And the wierd thing is, when I went into TM properties, it now said that the next back up was scheduled for 3.54pm as though it had already done a back up at 2.54pm.
I had to do a manual backup. Do you think something is wrong with my ext HDD or with TM? I still have ample space in my ext HDD btw. Thanks in advance!

It's hard to tell whether it's the drive, the connections, or something in Time Machine.
The 2:54 backup may have been "delayed," due to the drive not being available. See #A1 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for a handy widget that will display the backup messages from your logs.
See if there was a backup attempt at that time; if there's such a message, that's the reason.
If so, check all the connections to be sure they're snug and secure. Try a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 there. If that doesn't help, try repairing the backups, per #A5 in Troubleshooting.
If still no help, try removing the check from the +Put the hard disk(s) to sleep . . .+ box in +System Preferences > Energy Saver.+ Not all drives respond to that setting, and some WDs have a proprietary "spin down" feature that's near-impossible to remove, but it's worth a try.

    Hello Achates:
I did not read the rather long post. If you wish to reinstall OS X 10.4, use your software install DVD. Backup is essential. To minimize your risk, I would use an archive and install:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
In that way, you will have a fresh copy of OS X and your current settings will be preserved.
Incidentally, I do not agree that the printer problem is best solved by reinstalling OS X. I have had HP printers for sometime and, on one occasion, had difficulty after an upgrade. HP technical support walked me through uninstalling all traces of the HP driver and then reinstalling.

  • Mapping a ext. hdd on mac to a windows 8 pc

I have an external hdd connected to my mac-mini.  It is initialized in MS-DOS (FAT32), as I want it to be mapped to my windows 8 machine. What do I need to do on the mac-mini to make this ext. hdd visible to be mapped (I know that is a windows term, not sure what the mac term is), to my windows 8 computer.  I am a windows user historically, but moving to the mac side.

Open the Sharing pane of System Preferences, turn on File Sharing, and connect to it from the Windows machine.

    Hey Forum,
I am using a wd 500gb ext hdd and now i am about to reformat my hdd to one partition hfs+j and now i need to know, reformat it to apple partition map, master boot record, or guid partition?
    Pls reply thanks!:D
    Ala.

    Hi Ala,
GPT (GUID Partition Table) and MacOS Extended (Journaled) are the standard (normal) settings to be used for external harddisks in conjunction with Intel-based Macs like your MacBook.

  • How to identify damaged files in ext HDD?

    Early 2008 iMac - iMac8,1 - Intel Core 2 Duo - OS X 10.6.8 - (int) Samsung SSD 840 EVO 500GB - (ext) OWC Qx2 enclosure w. 4x2TB TOSHIBA DT01ACA200 - Wacom Intuos Pen&Touch tablet (no mouse) - DSL - Flash Player.
I think hardware is the place for this question.
I inherited this iMac back in May/June, spent a month or two with it, did a fresh install of Leopard, and then Snow Leopard on top of that. Everything seemed fine. Speedy response. Decent browsing speed, even with my crappy 3 Mbps DSL.
I added two separate HW upgrades: a SSD int hard drive + RAM to 4GB (installed by reputable local shop), and added a 4-bay ext HDD set up as 4 independent drives, JBOD (purchased from OWC). I feel I made a mistake in doing both of those things at the same time, as I immediately encountered glitches that have been hard to troubleshoot. The worst was the ext HDD / enclosure suddenly un-mounting all by itself, complete with error message ("was not ejected properly"), promptly after which the drives reappear on the desktop, with their contents seemingly in place.
I'm not looking for help troubleshooting; I think I've found the problem, at least for the un-mount issue (bad FW port, thankfully there are two). There might or might not be lingering stall-when-opening-folder issues, too soon to tell. Both vendors have been helpful with their responses.
What I'd like to know is how (or if) the contents of the ext HDDs can be scrutinized for damage? This un-mount thing happened at least a dozen times, and several other times I was forced to manually shut down the HDD enclosure when everything else was frozen. I have to think something's been corrupted or damaged with all of that un-ejected off-and-on activity.
Any input is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

No, I've always avoided those like the plague. The pop-up ads for that crap are the obvious cues to stay away!

The only meaningful test of whether there are "corrupt files" is to use the computer. If it behaves normally, you can assume that the operating system and applications are intact. As for your other files, open the most important of them and see whether the contents are what you expect.
Though swapping the FW port SEEMS to have stopped the sudden un-mounting (maybe not enough time spent scrutinizing that yet), there is still problematic behavior. Just this evening, after the desktop was on all day but saw little use (Safari, iTunes), I tried simply opening one of the hard drives:
    - 8 minutes to simply open the window. Spinning beach ball. Window changed dimensions from prior use, appeared as though it was opened for the first time. It showed no contents.
    - 20 more minutes to show contents. During this time, the spinning progress wheel spun. Contents finally showed up.
    - 8 more minutes to open one folder. Spinning progress wheel.
Contents appear to be there. This is a storage disc, no backups ever performed. This new 2TB drive contains only 100GB.
This stall seemingly caused other stalls elsewhere. Namely, a simple text copy-and-paste function in TextEdit. When the HDD finally decided to finish, TextEdit was available to me again.
    Welcome to my world.

  • Hard Drive Icon Not Showing Up on Desktop

Hey folks, this might be a very very noobish question, but I guess I'm fairly new to OSX...
My Hard Disk Drive icon is not showing up on my desktop for some reason...if I open a New Finder Window, I can't see it on the upper left hand quadrant in columnar view, but I can get to all the shortcut folders in the lower left hand quadrant (Applications, Documents, Movies, etc.), but can't navigate to the root directory unless I use Terminal (yup, I'm root user).
When I go into Disk Utility (/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app) then I can see the drive itself as well as the Windows partition I created for Bootcamp purposes. I tried Verify Drive and Verify Permissions to see if there were some weird problems with the drive itself but both came back perfect, and still no HDD icon on the desktop.
I have a feeling it's just some weird setting I may have inadvertently tweaked, so any feedback, advice, or information on how to get it back would be very welcome and appreciated. In case it's any help, here is the HDD Information from Get Info:

Thanks ElBiggus, I neglected to add that I had already done this. "Hard disks" is checked, as is "CDs, DVDs, and iPods", as well as "Connected Servers".
If I drop down the "New Finder windows open:" menu, I see "Home", "Documents", "Computer", "iDisk" (greyed out), and "Untitled", which is my Windows partition.
This is a very strange one...can't seem to figure it out

  • Mac OS X Finder Icons

Mac OS 10.4.11, Lightroom 2, when I export images the Finder Icons are generic jpg files rather than the icon being a mini preview of the file. Is there a way to get LR to generate Finder Icon Previews or is there something I can do in the OS to make them display? CS3 file icons have the icon preview showing the image.
Thanks! (Photoshop user since version 1, new Lightroom 2 user. I had LR Version 1 but didn't use it.)

I won't try to answer that.  Perhaps someone else can help.
    2. I renamed an external HDD's name that was used for Time Machine (TM) back up. When I went to back up, it told me it couldn't. So, I looked at TM settings. I noticed it was looking for the old name even though it was the same exact disk. I told it to reuse the renamed disk to resume. Why is it that picky on my renamed disk drive?
I would have removed it from Time Machine's preferences, renamed it, then added it back.
    3. Also, how do I get back Finder's sidebar icon for mounted external USB HDD? I accidently removed it. Unmounting and remounting doesn't make it come back.
Try opening Finder's preferences (File > Preferences), then selecting the Sidebar.  Uncheck "External disks", close the preferences panel, then repeat checking that option.
