Mac OS Leopard 10.5.8 in MacBook White Unibody

This machine came´s with 10.6.1, but we are trying to replace 60+ older portables and actually have more than 500+ deployed, the company´s software is really an issue and the new Snow doesn´t allow to run certain apps that are "critical" to the company´s executives, does anyone knows if there are possibilities to downgrade, installing 10.5.8 into another "similar" machine, e.j. MB Alluminium that came with 10.5.7 and "cloning" the resulting HD into a the new MacBook White.

Absolutely NOT true. I have just booted from and then cloned over a 10.5.8 OS from an external hard drive to a 2.26 MacBook UniBody (Late 2009.) The MB works with this OS, along with all factory-installed apps.
There are two things that do not work correctly on this particular model MB however (thus lending credence to the claim of lack of hardware support.) These things are: [1] the keyboard control of screen brightness (and the corresponding System Preference) does not work -- although the default screen brightness is fine; and, [2] the volume keyboard control keys (and the corresponding System Preference) does not work. Obviously, this is more serious of a deficit, but I can imagine certain people out there who could live without any sound emanating from their MacBook.

They told me to bring it to the genius at the apple store. They will change it for free but I don't have any physical place to back up my computer, they said it will take a coupe of days. I am not really sure if I have to back it up.

Hey my macbook white unibody is coming up with a dark screen that is telling me to restart, how do i get rid of it?

I actually have a couple questions.
I bought a used Macbook 2009 unibody that still has snow leopard. It recently has been coming up with a darkened screen telling me to restart.
My first question is how do i get rid of that? Next i don't no the computer password (luckily its not required to get on the computer or applications) is there a way to change it? Can i wipe the hard drive, its full of personal files? lastly if i download mountain lion, will it wipe the hard drive or get rid of microsoft office?

You need to contact the vendor to obtain the password as well as the original install disk. There is little you can do without it.
It sounds like you are getting kernel panics. These are usually hardware related, often due to faulty or loose RAM modules.

Advise on fixing/glueing Top Case cracks on Macbook White Unibody 2009 A1342

Hi Folks!
I have a white unibody 2009 that has a crack on the top case by the ethernet port.
This is probably a stress related crack from picking up the case from the palm rest and the polucarbonate case just couldn't hold the pressure and cracked that area.
It is way out of warranty, but still wanted to check with you all if Apple might be willing to either fix it for free themselves or give me the part (the top case) to replace myself. This looks more like a design or material flaw, since this macbook has been handled just like any other laptop would. Normal use!
If not, I could take it apart and attempt to fix it by glueing it from inside.
Has anyone tried this and what glue would be the strongest fix for this poly material? Any brand you recommend? Something stronger than superglue or gorilla?
Also, not sure yet if there is any space between the ethernet port and the case to maybe add some kind of rigid plastic to the bottom of the case under the crack in order to add support and keep it toghether.
If so, what would you recommend I use as support? It would have to be a very thin plastic, not sure what though.
I'd appreciate "constructive" advise. Thanks a lot!

You’ve run into the main problem with user forums. Since we aren’t trained Mac mechanics and no one from Apple reads or posts to these forums except as users, you’ve got to hope that someone reads your post who has had the exact same problem as yours and has found a solution for the problem.

If your Windows side is not seeing your Airport Extreme, I'm wondering if the Boot Camp drivers (Windows support software) was installed correctly. That is what installs the Airport drivers among other things.

After installing Windows, the support software installs Boot Camp drivers to support your Mac hardware, including AirPort devices, the built-in camera, the Apple Remote, the trackpad on a portable Mac, and the function keys on an Apple keyboard. The software also installs the Boot Camp control panel for Windows and the Apple Boot Camp system tray item.
You can download the support software by selecting the “Download the latest Windows support software from Apple” option in Boot Camp Assistant. The support software must be copied to an external USB drive formatted as MS-DOS (FAT).
After you configure Windows, if you kept the external USB drive that has the Windows support software inserted, an installer starts automatically. Otherwise, insert the external USB drive, then double-click the setup.exe file located in the BootCamp folder.
Follow the onscreen instructions. Important: Do not click the Cancel button in any of the installer dialogs.

Cracks on either side of the hinge on my Macbook White Unibody (purchased mid-2010)

Hi there. My Macbook White (purchased mid-2010) has developed cracks at either end of the hinges, and they are beginning to move up the back of the screen. I am no longer under warranty, and was wondering if they would repair it, and how much it costs?
Also, my friend had a similar problem, and by the by off to university next year so funds are tight, and he, having had to pay £180 recieved a brand new Macbook Pro. I wondered if I would perhaps be able to benefit from the same treatment?

i had the exact same problem with mine and i hadnt even noticed it ! i took it in to the apple store for another problem that i needed doing and the person serving me notcied it. Now my laptop was out of warranty, but the guy said that they would repair it for free. I thought this might have been a gesture of goodwill as i have had so many problems but when i looked it up, they had done it for alot of people. Plus they did it in one day.

Gaming-Graphics problem with MacBook White Unibody (Late 2009)

Hello there, this is going on:
When I open any game (like call of duty 4) it seems to work ok, 90-125 fps as it should be (800x600 minimum graphics), and this happens the first 5-10 minutes i'm playing, then it starts to seriously lag itself, FPS goes down to 30-40 fps with a veeery poor performance, unplayable, for like 5-10 minutes, and then it starts to work fine again. I can't exactly explain it, but I don't see the fans running faster, they stay steel, the MacBook starts to heat a little and that's all I can tell.
I though this was a Mac OS X problem with the video card, but same thing happens on Boot Camp, with Windows 7, with ANY game i'm playing. Then I tried to restart the PRAM and SMC, but I don't have any solution.
Is this a Hardware problem? Is this happening just to me or is there anybody who has this problem, too? Help! and thanks in advance.

I have had this problem for the last year with iRacing and lately F1 2010.
In good news, I seem to have solved it last week. I did some googling and saw a few posts that suggested it could be due to the GPU overheating. To test this I downloaded and installed Speedfan in windows and smcFanControl in OSX.
Both apps will enable you to monitor the temp of your CPU and GPU. I noticed generally in OSX the GPU hits a max of around 72 degrees Celsius. When I switched to windows and fired up iRacing and then F1 2010 I noticed it was all fine till the GPU hit around 90 degrees Celsius. At that point it the FPS drop kicked in and I went from 70 odd FPS in iRacing to 20 FPS.
To get around the problem, You can turn up the fan speed, which will stop the GPU from getting so hot. Unfortunately for a reason I don't understand SpeedFan will not allow you to control the speed of the fan in windows. So you need increase the speed to 5000 - 6000 RPM using smcFanControl in OSX. If you restart then fire up Windows the fan speed will stay at the higher rate you have set.
Since I started doing that my FPS drop problems seem to have disappeared.
The problem is if you then put windows to sleep, when you wake it up again the fan will go back to the default speed. So if you need shut the lid of your laptop, you have to restart to Mac OSX, then set the fan speed, the restart to windows. Painful but better than FPS drops.
If anyone has any other thoughts on any of this stuff I would love to hear it.

Windows 8.1 on Macbook White Mid 2010!

Hey! I installed Windows 7 on my Macbook White unibody mid 2010 model. When I got it I noticed that I needed Windows 8 an application I'm using alot so I installed it. When I installed it I had to install boot camp to get my sound to work and the special keys on my built in keyboard. But the Boot Camp driver I installed says that it's not compatible with this computer model. What do I do now? How do I get it to work? Is there any way for me to use Windows 8 or do I have to re-install Windows 7 and if so how?

Quick update -- I've tried resetting the pram, running the windows startup repair, and running bootrec.exe through the command prompt. No luck with those so far.
Just opened disk utility and saw the screenshot below....could be part of it, but I've deleted the partitions several times...

Hi people I needed some help I have a macbook white unibody and its only been a couple of months since I brought it and I have had a few problems with it
1) Sometimes when I try to turn it on, I have to press the power button for a couple of times and then eventually it comes on.
2)There is a tiny grey/black light dead pixel on the screen I know this isn't major but its only a couple of months old so how can a screen get dead pixels that fast.
3)Where I rest my wrists the colour white is changing into sort of pinkish and I don't have no explanation of how it can change when I only use a damp cloth to clean it :-\

I think the OP has the late 09 Unibody Macbook, polycarb version. Are you sure he should use magic eraser on that? My get some fine scratches on the surface of the plastic....

The operating systems for iOS devices and for Macs are completely different. Applications written for iOS won't run on a Mac no matter what fiddles you try with it. You can sometime extract data by opening the package, but it still won't do you any good. Look in the Mac App Store in your Applications folder to see if there are Mac versions or similar programs (iTunes login required).

I think you can.
Boot from the install cd by holding down C while booting, from there you disk utility to create a second partion and install OS X Leopard on the new partition.

2009 Macbook white slow to boot after upgrade from 10.5.8 (Leopard)to Mountain Lion   SSD

Ok, I have a 2009 Macbook White w/ 2Gz Core 2 Duo, 2Gb RAM, 120Gb HDD and NV9400M graphics.   Mountain Lion finally tempted me to do the upgrade and I wanted to take the opportunity to upgrade to SSD as well.    Here's what I did:
Originally my 120Gb was partitioned as 90Gb on 10.5.8 and 30Gb on Bootcamp for Window Vista.
I upgraded Macbook from Leopard to Mountain Lion while it's still fitted with the original HDD.   Gotta give credit to the lads at the Genius Bar who helped me with the clean install while keeping the Bootcamp partition intact!
I then took out the HDD, stick it into a USB3.0 HD enclosure, then put in my brand new SSD. (Plextor 128Gb SATA3).   I booted from the 10.8 recovery partition on my old HDD via USB, partitioned the SSD, then 'restored' the HDD's Mac OS X partition (now 10.8) onto my SSD.   Relatively painless process, and as a PC geek, I can't complain! :-)
Here's the situation:    Now that I've gotten Mountain Lion to run on my 3yr old macbook white on my brand spanking new SSD, I was actually expecting really snappy performance but no.   I noticed now it takes much longer to boot: I was so 'convinced' that the combination of SSD + Mountain Lion would give me such a significant boost that I couldn't care less to write down the previous boot time.     Right now it takes about 40-50 seconds for me to even see the 'apple' sign and another 15-20 secondds to get up & running.   That's without anything running in the background as it's still a clean install.
Read a few old posts it seems a common issue but given that I have a clean install, I wanted to make sure I haven't done anything wrong.
Last but not least, I also noticed while I booted from the 10.8 recovery partition from my old HDD, there's also an option of doing 'clean' reinstall of 10.8 on my SSD.    I tried that but it ended up being a HUGE wait.    The estimated time just kept growing and when it hits 6hrs, I cancelled it.   What does it do and is it normal to take such a long time to complete?   I rememeber the upgrade from Leopard to Mountain Lion took abt. 1.5yr...

Actually just noticed something interesting:
If I press and hold down the option key when I switch on the macbook, I will get to the boot screen whereas I can choose between my main partition and the recovery 10.8 on my SSD. Once I select the main partition, I'll be able to complete the booting, total time is abt. 30 seconds.
So my guess is that if I don't force the boot screen, then the computer is running some process in the background that WILL eventually boot from the main partition?
Is there any setup I can do/tweak to get the computer to boot straight from the main partition?
