Mac OS Lion - General Topic - Wireless Printer, Scanner, External Harddrive, Disk Management

Dear All,
I just fall in the mac world since I got an ipad and then an iphone and was very happy about these product I did purchased a mac mini server (Mac OS Lion 10.7.2 I think, basically the last version available).
But now I need to learn about the Mac OS world and this is not straight forward, particularly regarding my existing hardware devices installation (printer, scanner etc...).
I have some queries below, anyone who could help me is welcome.
Thanks for all your support,
Best Regards,
1. I have a wireless printer Samsung CLP315W for which I could download the driver and print through the USB cable but I did see yet how to make it work through the WI-FI network. I mean in windows, the printer was detected as shared printer on the network. How does it work here ?
2. I have a scanner canoscan Lide 30 which looks unfortunately not supported by Lion OS: indeed I could download the scanner toolbox labelled for "Mac OS" but I got the message: "PowerPC application not supported".
Do I have any chance to make this scanner working or must I throw it in the paper bin ? (I must say I am not satisfied by my Mac in this respect, I would expect a better compatibility with hardware devices.
3. I do have an external harddisk with various informations in as pictures, pdf files, offices files (word, excel) etc... This is a LaCie which was NTFS formatted with my previous computer based on windows OS.
At a first instance, it was recognized by my mac OS but all folders appears in read-only.
Do I have a way to apply the change to "full access" for all folders at once ?
Why is it in "read only" in mac OS when it is not under windows ?
Assuming I expect to continue using this disk as external backup but also expect to be able to access to it by windows OS computer, what is the best format ?
4. I bought a mac mini server with 2*500Go disk, but I just wonder: how to use this disk ? I mean I would see one disk as backup, somehow safe and the second use on daily basis when applications stands.
How does the disk management in general under Mac OS ?

Hi jean-jack,
The first thing you should look at, is if your are Mac enabled. If they are not, then there is a great chance that they will work badly or not at all.
About your questions:
1. Normally a Mac is supposed to detect it automatically and make it ready to use (try printing a document to see if this works). If your Mac doesn't recognize it, you can always add it manually in "printing and scanning" in your system preferences. This is accesible by just entering it in Spotlight (magnifying glass in the upper right corner) and adding it via the "+" icon (you may have to enter your password first using the lock in the lower left corner). After that he should recognize it as a WiFi printer and you should be able to use it.
2. Since it concerns an older scanner, it is simply not supported by Lion (Lion doesn't support PowerPC applications anymore). Therefore it is sadly ready for the trash can.
3. To change the accesibility of your hard disc to "full acces" you have to ctrl+click on the hard disc in Finder. In the drop down menu, you'll see the option "info". This option will open a small screen that allows you to adjust the settings for "sharing and responsibility" (found at the very bottom). Nevertheless I highly recommend you to format your hard disc to "exFAT" or "FAT32", because they give a much better compatibility to your Mac and are also readable on a Windows computer. You can do this by entering "disc aid program", once again in Spotlight. In this little program you are able to adjust the format of every single hard disc connected to your computer. Also not that this progress will completely erase all the files on your hard disc.
4. To split the hard disc into partitions, you can use the same program explained above. Simply choose your hard disc and press "adjust size". Here you can divide your hard disc into different partitions, which will be seen as different hard discs.
Good luck!

  • Recently upgraded Mac 24" to Lion (clean install) and now no external hard disks work with Time Machine

Recently upgraded Mac 24" to Lion (clean install) and now no external hard disks work with Time Machine.
installed new internal disk first with fresh 10.7.3 Lion software. Also upgrade ram to 4GB. Work great, super fast.
BUT.... my WD 1TB firewire400 external disks no longer work with the Lion enabled machine now.
FURTHER... I read somewhere that WD is problematic with Lion but Seagate was not... so I went and bought a new 3TB Seagate GoFlex.
When it didnt work properly either, I patiently searched and found a software/firward upgrade and applied.
    I re-partitioned disk to extened/journaled standard, etc.
Then assigned the particition to Time Machine. Drive turned the blue/grey color, so I thought it would work.
But, it has now been in "preparing" mode in Time Machine for HOURS....
What is up Apple? So dissappointed. Ive read these type of problems are notorious with Lion and I wish I never upgraded.
Are you trying to make issues with External disks, to drive people to iCloud?  That trick ont work in me. I will not reward bad behaviour Apple.
Please provide a fix... I wasted hours/days screwing around with this, instead of using the Mac for what its intended!

Solved by Pondini, on another thread I opened...
    Answer:
    Sounds like either:
A directory problem on your internal HD.  Verify your internal HD, and Repair any other volumes being backed-up per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
Something in OSX may be damaged.  You've tried the "combo," so a fresh copy of OSX (that won't disturb anything else) would be worth a try (and you don't need a tech for that).  See Installing the ''combo'' update and/or Reinstalling OSX.

  • My mac book pro with lion finds my wireless printer on start up, but subsequently can no longer find it unless I restart my laptop. any suggestions?

my ma bookk pro fimds my kodak wireless printer on start up, but after a period of time, can no longer find it and I get a connection error. I have to restart for it to connect again to the printer. I have unistalled and reinstalled the printer software, but the problem keeps recurring. Any suggestions?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Do I need airport to connect my new Mac Book Pro to a wireless printer?

Do I need Airport to connect a wireless printer to my new Mac Book Pro?

No and you don't have to use the wireless card in your MBP either.
A wireless printer connects to your wireless router. Any other device (computer) that is connected to the router either by wire or wireless will be able to use the printer.

  • HP 6700 Wireless Printer / Scanner

I have a relatively new HP 6700 Wireless Printer.  Everything has been going just fine.  Today, I was unable to get the printer to print.  I was printing an Excel Workbook Page.  Both the Lap Top (I have an IBM Lenovo with Windows 8.1 update) and the printer were connected to the wireless network.  I rebooted both.  Both were connected to the network.  When I go to the print preview function in Excel it says the Printer is off-line.  However the printer is connected to the network.  ????
I then printed the same document from the desk top, hard wired to the Printer.  It printed just fine.  I then scanned the document and sent a PDF file to the Lenovo Lap Top.  It worked just fine.
So, I am unable to print MS-Office documents to the printer.  The printer is indeed connected, but for some reason the Lap Top or Office thinks the printer is off-line.  How can I fix it.

Thanks for the reply.   I actually figured out how to contact HP directly and the Scan Dr. tool worked.
Thanks again for replying as it was the right answer.

  • .pdf I opened on my Mac Air, Lion OS will not print

Sometimes a .pdf will not print on any of my reliable printers.  The entire sheet remains white with no print at all.  I can't figure our why.  Any ideas?

    Hi TeresaMM,
Sorry to hear you are experiencing issues with the printer. I would like to help, can you describe for me what the printer is or is not doing. It sounds to me like it is not turning on but I could have misunderstood.
You said you are using the printer with 3 Mac computers so I believe it is setup wireless, please confirm. When you say it doesn't work again, I wonder, do you get an error message on the computer you are printing from, or on the front screen of the printer, maybe blinking lights?
Please elaborate on your description so that I can help identify the root cause and provide you with a solution.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

  • HP 7510 + Mac (OS X 10.8) = Wireless printing and scanning fails

    Hey guys,
After reading post after post on google and hp forums I am finally tired. I tried many things and nothing has come of it yet. I used to own one of these printers and everything worked great with my windows computer. I recently moved and purchased a new printer  7510 to use with my mac. Now the trouble is that it scans and prints.......sometimes. While other times it says no printer connected and then maybe after 15 minutes later it will print. But I am not able to scan all the time. I installed and uninstalled and nothing happened. I removed it from the list and added it once again and nothing. Please help because I just moved to a new loaction and I really need my scanner and printer to work. Thank you guys in advance.
    Mo

Are you able to scan using any of the methods in this document from HP?
The behavior exhibited when using a non-HP program to scan will help isolate the problem.

  • How to open the omega ego external HD in my Mac (mountain lion 10.8.1) but without format the disk?

    Hi
My omega ego external has all backup of the last year, but it does not open in my Mac Book Pro (Mountain Lion, 10.8.1) and the Desktop Mac Pro (10.6.8).
I read that I have to format it (utilities/disk utilities/erase). But I cannot do that because I need the content.
The Mac Pro is from my lab, where I work. I need the images/files/audios stored in the omega ego.
But I can not use the terminal to copy (I don't have permission, I'm not adm of this machine).
What I can do in these cases?
    Thank you.
    ILOSan

    Thanks Peter,
I tried that and unfortunately it didn't work.  Using that method, I was able to open up a package called Contents and within Contents was one file that when I opened it up it said, ?????? and that was it.  The file size is 8k and it was about 7MB before.  Unfortunately, it is apparently corrupted now and I learned a valuable lesson not to save my files directly to iCloud, that I've now turned off on my iPad and my MacBook Pro.  It's not worth the risk.  Thank you for your assistance.

  • Lion osx doesn't recognize my external hard disk

I recently installed Lion osx (10.7). But after installation, my external harddisk isnt' recognised by the computer anymore... It's a HFS format disk, and in snow leopard i had no problems with the HD. My time machine partition is on it, along with other important stuff. When i plug it in, it doesn't show on my desktop, nor in disk tools or finder. I've tried waiting for hours, restarting the imac, unplugging the disk etc., but nothing works. The HD is a Western Digital elements disk. Could it be a driver problem?

Do you have some more details about the type of drive that you are having problems with?  WD seems to make quite a few different models under the "WD Elements" product name.
My feeling at the moment is that it isn't a driver issue, not least because you typically don't have to install drivers yourself in order to access external hard drives.  I have a late 2009 iMac upgraded to Lion that is connected to a variety of hard drives both by USB and FireWire, and from different manufacturers (Seagate, LaCie and Iomega) but all seem to be quite happy mounting in 10.7.
By any chance do you have anything else that you can plug into your iMac to see if it mounts correctly, such as another hard drive or even a USB memory stick?  If so, do you have any problems with that?

  • Wireless printer for Mac OS X v 10.5.8

I have a Mac OS X v 10.5.8 - are there any wireless printers that will work with this version?  I purchased an HP Deskjet 3520 and it is not compatible.  Apparently I need to have a minimum of 10.6.  What HP printers are compatible?
    Thank you.

    I use a Canon MG8120 wireless printer/scanner with computer OS's 10.5 through 10.7.

  • Trying to install Deskjet 3054A wireless printing with brand new Mac Book Pro

    Hello,
I am trying to set up the wireless printing function on the Deskjet 3054A with a new Mac Book Pro, but not having any luck. When I connect via the USB the printer shows up, but once disconnected there is no communication. I tried to get the updated driver on the HP site, but nothing ever downloaded and it kept taking me to the setup page.
Is this All-In-One compatible with the new Mac OS 10.10 for wireless printing?
    Thank
    Scott

    Hello Sabuff,
    Welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you are having some connectivity issues to you Mac 10.10.
Just so you are aware, the printer does not have a full feature software and driver package available for the Mac 10.10 operating system.
You can however try the HP Printer Drivers v3.0 for OS X.
Please feel free to write me back with any other questions or concerns.

  • Wireless printer help please

I just had my OS reinstalled and now my mac can't find my wireless printer. The only things that seem to be listed under Apps are my printer related manuals, etc.

First you should look at the printer manufacturer website and see if the printer is supported for Mavericks.
If it is, try this, it will probably work:
key step: uninstall all printer manufacturer apps and "utilities"
go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners > Print
control-click on your printer in the column on the left
select "Reset Printing System..." and "reset" in the dialog that follows
do a factory reset on your printer. You'll have to consult the printer manual for how.
power down everything: modem, router, computer, and printer
power up each item in turn in the same order: modem, router, computer, and printer. Let each power up completely before moving on to the next
enter your wifi password in your printer so it can connect to the network
go back to printers & scanners and it should see your printer and download a driver for it from Apple
resist the temptation to install any printer manufacturer apps in the future.
