Mac OS no longer boots

I'm new to the forum and a new Mac user. My problems started when I attempted to install Win 7. After setting up the proper partition size under I selected installation startup. My MBP restarted and begun the installation. When it asked for which partition to select I picked the one called bootcamp and selected format. After the install went normal for a standard windows install and finished at the windows desktop. Since I needed from my understanding drivers for most of the hardware I restarted my MBP in an attempt to switch over to OSX. This is where all my problems begun. After holding down the option button to switch to OSX I didn't get a response nor from any of the other hotkeys I had attempted along with the eject button. Now all that happens when I turn on the computer is I hear the Mac power up sound and a grey screen that after a few switches over to loading windows. I have completely no idea as to how to fix my problem or even where to start. Any answers out there?

Normally 'we' ask someone to boot from their OS X DVD.
Some installers wipe out the EFI partition.
I thought the idea was to DELETE Boot Camp partition (advanced options) and CREATE NTFS. But it has been a long while and I use entire drives, dedicated to Windows (and another to OS X).
And of course BACKUP before beginning any such process as installing a new OS, partitioning your boot drive, etc.

  • My trusty Mac LC no longer boots from the HD

I purchased a new Mac LC many years ago and it has served me well until recently when it would no longer boot from the hard drive. When I boot from a Disk Tools floppy, I get some limited success but do not ever hear the HD spin up. The startup chime also does not sound.  When used as the boot disk and trying to use the installer option, the program can't find a SCSI drive, only the floppy drive. The 5V & 12V to the HD are right on and a new PRAM battery is installed. I can load and run programs using the floppy drive but that requires a lot of disk swapping. I tried substuting a tested Apple LC HD with the same results and now I suspect the problem is not the HD but is somewhere else. Any help would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks to Jan & Jeff for their quick response to my question. Here is some additional background information which may give you both some more ideas.
The original 40 MB HD was replaced with a 120 MB HD along with an increase in RAM to 4 MB sometime in the first year after I bought the LC. The 40 MB HD was installed in an APS (?) external SCSI box with its own power supply. OS 7 was just becoming available and Apple gave me a set of disks even though OS 6.x was in the computer so I put OS 7 on the external (40 MB) HD. Everything worked great for 20 years although there were periods of intermittent use when I used other computers for work, Internet, and e-mail. I powered up the external HD infrequently but it worked fine the last time I tried it some months back.
Then when I fired the LC up 6 or 7 weeks ago, it would not boot unless I turned the power switch on  & off 2 or 3 times in succession then everything functioned normally. Then it would not boot at all even from the external HD.
Now, to address some of your comments and observations:
All connectors, plugs, SIMMs, and socketed RAM devices were removed, examined and replaced. All electrolytic caps showed no signs of leakage or swelling and the PWB looked in its original condition.
The +5, -5 and +12 voltages measured at the power supply connector were within 1%. When I originally thought I had a HD problem, I opened up the 120 MB HD and when trying to boot, the platter would give a slight twitch with no tendency to spin. A friend of a friend (a MAC serviceman) brought a couple of vintage drives SCSI over to try with similar results. The Apple HD I purchased was tested and guaranteed, although wiped clean. It has since been returned. As I said in my original question, the Installer on the floppy could not find a SCSI drive. In all of my efforts I could never get any of the hard drives to spin up.
Although I have a MacMini (OS 10.6.8), I still used the LC because for drawing schematics and floor plans, printing labels, etc., simple is better for me. Is there any hope that I can get my LC working again?
Many thanks for your help and suggestions. len-35

  • Why outlook2011 mac version* takes long time to boot with OSX

why outlook2011 mac version* takes long time to boot with OSX

Okay, so after doing all of the above, the computer still takes between 40 seconds and 1 minute or so to boot up, and the VersionCue messages still appear. However I discovered that the "kdcmond cannot retrieve..." messages disappeared after I disabled my ethernet connections. So at least I know that that had nothing to do with the extended boot-up time.
I have heard that the more RAM you have, the longer it takes to boot due to the RAM count. Since I have 10 GB, maybe this is why?

Is there a way to fix this?

Can you enter the following command in Terminal and post the result here?
Command is "ls -al" (it's the "L" letter in "ls" and "-al"), then press Enter.
Additionally, you can enter the following commands in Terminal (press Enter after each one):
    sudo chown root:admin /

  • Macbook no longer boots

    Hi,
This past Tuesday night I downloaded the new software updates for my macbook. There was an error during the installation and the updates did not complete. A screen popped up on my macbook which told me that I needed to re-start my macbook. I clicked ok and re-started. After the re-start my macbook will not boot, and remains stuck on the screen which reads "Starting Mac OS X..." I have tried resetting the PRAM and SMC, as well as using the Disk Utility to repair the disk. So far nothing has worked and the macbook remains stuck in boot-limbo...
Has anyone experienced anything similar after installing apple updates? Any help would be appreciated. Bought my macbook in June 2006 and my applecare just expired this past june.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
i'm following the disscussion since i've notice that my problem is very similar to UptownTopRanking. My macbook freezed when i was uptading (4 uptade at the time including Mac OS X). I shut it down by pressing the power button for few seconds.
And after the computer no longer boots and freeze on the grey screen.
I've tried the solutions proposed on the apple support page but it still not working.
When i saw this topic, i tried to do the same, archive and install the Mac OS X program with my original CD.
The problem is that everytime I'm trying to install it, the program stop after few minutes an ask me to reboot because and error occured. The Error message says : (i'm translating from french)
The installation program didn't succeed to install some files in the "/Volumes/MacintoshHD". Contact the editor of the program to have some help.
And then they ask me to restart the computer, and when i'm trying to intall again, the installation process is still crashing..
Is there anything i can do?

  • Mac Pro will not Boot-Up

My Mac Pro (Early 2008) will no longer boot-up correctly.  After having been in Sleep Mode for a few hours I tried to wake it up, but it would not wake.  I had to manually turn it off.  Upon rebooting I got to the gray screen with the Apple logo and the spinning wheel.  It seemed to be going like normal, but suddenly the spinning wheel froze.  I tried several times and it still continued to freeze.  I tried to restart in Safe Mode, but it would keep freezing.  I tried to use the Disc Repair utlity on the install disc, and it would seem to work fine for a while, but before I could get into the log in screen I got a gray Kernel Panic error.
I thought that it might be an issue with my RAM so I reset the PRAM settings, that still did not work.  I was able to run the Apple Hardware Test, but both the standard and extended test said that my hardware was working correctly.  Thinking that it might be a corrupted system file or something on my hard drive I put in a clean drive and tried to install Mac OSX once again on it.  But it seemed to be going fine and I received another Kernel Panic error.
Right now I think that I have exhausted my possible tests.  I can either call to tech support, and pay the fee, and hopefully someone there will be able to help me, or I can lug my 50+ pound tower to the nearest Apple Store.
Any advice or help that you can give would be appreciated.

Did that happen while you were booted from the installation DVD, or while you were booted from your usual boot device?

  • Critical Kernel error while on windows partition, now neither mac or windows will boot help ?

Hi I was on my windows side of my mac when i got the blue-screen-of-death with something saying Critical Kernel Error, weird noises from the speakers and the macbook pro did a hard shut off.
Since then I can no longer boot into the mac or windows side (both are stuck infinitely loading). I ran disk utility on the mac side and I have an "Invalid Node Structure." Which disk utility cannot repair. I do have DiskWarrior on another mac to try and rebuild the mac partition through a firewire connection - i think that is the correct course of action ?
But does this mean my windows partition is likely gone or any idea what went on ? As I am terribly confused that while on my windows side I had an error that messsed up both partitions.
Or what to check for so this hopefully doesnt happen again if it is a hardware problem? My drive smart status is listed as "OK" and I cant seem to run the Apple Hardware test as upon attempting to get into it the laptop just shuts off while loading it, although I read somewhere the Apple Hardware test is no longer preloaded on macbook pros.
The system in question is a 15" macbook pro bought around July 2011.
    Thank you,
    Wes

Alright I have both my mac side and windows side repaired and functioning fine. Should I still be concerned ? Linc I know you are saying this is a drive malfunction but is there a way I can be sure ? I still cannot run AHT (restart, hold down D), and my laptop shipped with Lion installed so I believe it should run. It just boots into the mac side when I hold D..

  • Onboard Mac Lan no longer works after 1.9 update!!!

I was using bios v1.8 and both my Mac Lan and my Giga Lan were working perfectly fine. Now that i updated to v1.9 my Mac Lan no longer works but my Giga is fine!!!
My Mac Lan still gets an ip address from my router, but i cannot ping the router nor anyone else on the network and my internet does not work!! So right now im using my Giga lan but i want my other one working like it was.
I tried going BACK to v1.8 but it did not fix the problem, so i went back yet again to v1.9 and im still left with the same problem.  Ive tired disabling it and re-enabling it in both the bios and in windows and still nothing. Ive also tried re-installing the drivers and that did not work either. I even ran a Winsock Fix but that didn't fix the problem either.
Is anyone else having this problem besides me? what can i do to fix it???

Download new bios and extract it to a directory where you can find it (root of c:\ if you are lazy like me).  Run wminfo if you are paranoid about losing your mac address and copy it down for your nvidia adapter.
Restart windows in safe mode.  Close every application down in task manager.
Run winflash as described below and CHECK ALL THE RIGHT BOXES TO UPDATE BOOTBLOCK AND TO CLEAR THY CMOS.  Read Syar's description below as that is what I used:
    Quote from: syar2003 on 30-July-05, 00:24:48
No , floppy flash is not neccesary !
    Can use
    C:\Program Files\MSI\Live Update 3\FlashUty\Award
    winflash.exe
    Place checkmarks on bootblock/dmi area/update all/clear cmos
During flashing you see it will verify the programming of the bios chip .
And the good thing is unlike dos flash you can redo it if it fails , just by starting taskmanager and kill winflash.exe
and start over (as long as the machine isn't powered down or restarted).
I always say no after the flashing when asked to restart , exit the winflash utility , make a normal shutdown , turn off PSU for 10 seconds , then turn back
on , enter bios and load optimized default , followed by a boot to build/update dmi pool .
Kill all unwanted apps in the systemtray before running winflash and dont have any other applications running .
Best way is to boot to windows safemode .

  • Can no longer boot to MacOSX after bootcamp install

Hello all, I have an issue to where I can no longer boot into the Mac OSX partition after what appears to be a failed Windows bootcamp install. As I was running the bootcamp assistant process, a reboot occurred and I was greeted with the "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key". I have no idea how to get past this and boot back to OSX.
    Things I have tried:
Holding down the "option" key does nothing, even using a USB keyboard
Resetting PRAM (CMD + OPT + P + R) does nothing, even with USB keyboard
I have put in a MAC OSX 10.7 Disk and cannot boot to disk using CMD + C on startup
I also pulled the hard drive out and connected it to another PC and wiped the drive completely. I put it back in the macbook and I am still presented with this error. It seems, even though I get the Mac startup tone, that it is stuck in which ever OS it tried to run previously, that being Windows. Not sure why I am still receiving this error even after wiping the drive completely clean.
As far as hardware goes, I am pretty sure its a late 2010 Alumn. Macbook Pro. I cant get the current model number since I cant boot the OS. Any help is appreciated.

    Please reset SMC as well.
You can get the serial number from the back cover and use https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do to find the model.

  • MacBook Pro no longer boots Yosemite

I have had Yosemite installed for about a week and everything seemed to be working fine. For some reason my laptop (MacBook Pro Early 2011) no longer boots. I have managed to install a new copy of OSX, but that didn't fix it. I also ran Disk Utility, but that didn't fix my issue either.
What should be my next step? Luckily I do use Carbon Copy Cloaner, so I have a bootable drive to start from and a restore option.
    Thanks

    Hello Mr.1977,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
You didn't specify exactly what happens when it fails to boot, but it is just showing a gray screen, this article should be of use:

  • G4 PowerMac no longer boots from External FireWire Hard Drive

What would cause a G4 PM to no longer boot from an Ext. FW HD that was working fine yesterday and in fact still mounts fine on the desktop..... but when I go into system pref's and attempt to select the ext. HD (and it does show up as an option to boot from since it has an OS in Mac OS Extended Format, Journaled) but after selecting said drive the system simply defaults to the main HD instead and not the external HD I selected within system pref's.???
(I've run apple's disc utilities / First Aid ..... it simply says no repairs were necessary).
The HD in question is a Maxtor 120GB 7200 ATA133 in the following ADS enclosure:
Same enclosure works fine with a pionner 110D S-Drive.
Any Suggestions (short of installing the Maxtor hard drive internally which I may have to try anyway)?

  • Program no longer boots

I'm using InDesign 4.0.5 and it no longer boots. It gets to "starting services" then unexpectedly quits. I send a crash report to Adobe, and that's the end of it. No more InDesign. I've taken to using my laptop now, but it's a pain. I want to use the software I paid for! It was working fine for a couple of years, then suddenly stopped. Help! I'm using Mac OSX.

Thanks, Cindy! That sort of worked, but then I found the plug in that makes pdfs was damaged. So I ended up reinstalling InDesign from my installer disk and that worked! Yay! I'm up and running again.

  • Help! My Mac Pro will not boot up

I knew I shouldn't try to use the Boot Camp on my MP, but I thought it would work.
I have three HD in my MP and followed the instructions for the installtion of WIN XP on Mac drive 3, but when I was faced with the formatting choices in the Win setup I got confused with all the drive letters (I have two CD drives and three HDs), and must have formatted my Mac OS drive and partially drive 3.
My Mac Pro will no longer boot to the Mac OSX, even with the "option" key held down. All I get is a black screen that says: "NTLDR is maissing. (press CRTL-ALT-DEL to reboot).
Is there any hope of a recovery?
    Thanks,
    Tony

Wow...this is good to know! After many years with PCs I "assumed" that it would name the 1st drive "C" and then each one after that in order.
My problem was that I have three identical drives, all 250 GBs, so it was confusing, but that is exactly what the instructions said. So, with your encouragement and a little bit of faith, I will try this one more time. At least I learned how to recover after deleting my boot drive.
    Thanks so much...
    Tony
    Tony,
If I remember right from my boot camp / xp
installation, boot camp aliases the drives, and when
it tells you to format C: for windows, that's the one
    to select from the screen.
I panicked when I saw that, but then I realized that
the C: drive shown on the installation screen was
actually my secondary drive (and that boot camp had
shuffled the drive letters around). If you notice,
C: is actually not the top of the list, and in my
case I had two different drive sizes and so I could
reason that C: matched my secondary drive's size.
In short, pick C: for installation, as the program
    says...
I thought for sure it nuked my OSX installation at
first, when it didn't seem that I could boot back to
OSX, but in the Control Panel of Windows (or in your
System Properties on OSX) you'll see an icon called
"Startup Disk" which will also allow you to pick OSX
    or Windows and then restart.
