Mac OS "not yet set" after time machine restore.

Getting the grey screen. When i boot in verbose it says that the Mac OS "is not yet set" but everythign else seems normal. Except for the fact its not booting. Some one please help !

something may be wrong with the backup you used to restore. something can also be wrong with the file system. i suggest you boot from the SL install DVD (make sure it's snow leopard, not leopard one btw). then start disk utility and reformat (not just erase) the whole drive using the partition tab. then quit disk utility and do a restore from an earlier time point. see if it works then.

  • Mac will not log in after time machine restore. Snow leopard

I managed to delete 6000 photos by accident on my mac (it can be done), luckily iv kept up to date back ups with time machine, so I bottled off the snow leopard cd, followed utilities and did a system restore. Everything sempt to have worked well till I got to the log in screen, I typed in my password and it just keeps saying 'you are unable to log into the file vault user account "Alex" at this time, Logging in failed because an error occurred'. I know for a 100% fact my password is correct  and I went through the reset options and it still wouldn't work after completing it. Iv googled a few fixes but nothing seems to have worked correctly, I'm not exactly the biggest wiz with macs so I'm not 100% sure if iv done any of them correctly. Please if anyone else has had the same problem and found and fix can you help this is a huge inconvenience
    Thank you
    Alex

  • CS5 Raw Support for Nikon D800 not function well after Time Machine restore

    Hi.
I am using the CS5 with RAW support version for D800 without any problem before.
I am not very sure the RAW support version that I use in the past.
But after I restore my iMac with the latest time machine file.
CS5 cannot open the RAW file for D800 anymore, I try to install the latest RAW file version 6.7 for CS5, but when I click to check the RAW support version in CS5, it keeps showing version 6.6, any idea how to solv
    Thank you very much~

You need ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) 6.7 to open D800 files.

  • Messages.app not giving notifications after time machine restore

    On Mavericks
So Messages.app stopped working yesterday.. Got the message
"There was a problem with Messages. You need to quit and open Messages again."
So after quiting and restarting.. all the history disappeared..
I restored ~/Library/Messages from time machine from a day earlier..
Now the notification has stopped working.. No bubble as well to notify new message
    1) Tried disable / enable message on Mac and iPhone
    2) Tried Disk repair for any permission issues
Any ideas? How to fix this??
//Not having a good experience with mavericks with many small issues..

    Hi,
So what version is Messages saying it is Now ?
Which version did you try to Time Machine back to the computer ?
Since iChat 3 the App has to match with the OS level.
This applies down to increment levels as well.

  • Mac taking forever to boot after time machine restore

Yesterday I erased my mac's hard drive and did a full restore from my time machine backup. The restore took about 10 hours and when it finished, the computer restarted and now it's been stuck on the gray loading screen for over an hour. The gray wheel continues to spin and I can hear the hard drive working the entire time, so I assume it's doing something, but is it supposed to take this long? I've done a couple restores in the pas (first time on lion though) and I don't remember this part ever taking nearly as long. Should I continue to wait?

It's been stuck on the boot screen for over 2 hours now and I'm really tempted to force shut down the Mac, but I still hear the hard drive being accessed constantly, so it's gotta be doing something. Question is, if I turn it off right now will I have to do the entire restore process over again? I really do not want my computer to be unusable for another 10 hours...

    Hi guys,
Hi, and welcome to the forums.
hope somebody can help me with this issue with TM.
I decided to restore my entire system from a backup I got in an external hard drive ( formatted mac Os Journaled). I didnt exclude any folder from the backup.
Basically using the mac osx installation disk
Which one? If you used a Leopard Install disc, that's the problem. You need to use a +Snow Leopard+ disc to restore a +Snow Leopard+ backup. (Unfortunately, Apple doesn't exactly make that clear -- you are far from the first!)
If your system is not too large, and didn't take more than an hour or so to restore, just do it over.
If it's a lot larger, though, you can just install Snow Leopard. Your Mac should boot up normally, but don't use any apps yet. First, download and install the 10.6.5 "combo" update. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1324 Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards.

  • Mountain Lion Server Web Server not working after time machine restore

Our Mountain Lion Server (mac mini) lost its drive yesterday.  We got a new mac mini and did a time machine restore.  Everything in the Server seems to be working (users, groups, file shares, etc) except for the web server.
Trying to connect to the server results in safari not being able to connect to the server.  Even just clicking on the "view server website" link in the Server app doesn't work.
We've tried stopping / restarting the services.  We have confirmed that the files in Library / Server with the web pages were restored.
Are there any gotchas, troubleshooting steps or guides anyone can point me to?  I'd like to get our wiki back.
    Thanks
    Jeff

  • IWork free with new purchase but not available after time machine restore

Tried to find the best place to put this and this is the best I can surmise.
iWork is now supposedly free with the purchase of a new Mac. I received a new MacBook Pro 2 days ago. The problem is, I wanted to keep all my old settings/apps/features/files without spending 2 weeks resetting everything back up, so I used time machine to restore my machine to the state of my old MacBook Air. Unfortunately, it does not look like any iWork apps remained in the Applications folder (makes sense), but now I go to the App store and Pages, Numbers, and Keynote are all listed as $19.99.
I only assume that my time machine restore was the issue (I don't know if the apps were ever in the Applications folder at all), but since time machine is a feature Apple supports I would assume they support some way to make this work as well. How do I go about getting iWork without paying $60?
    Thanks

There are several reasons why the updates don't show as free for those who already have iWork '09 installed.
    1. You must have iWork '09 apps installed & they must be updated to the x.3 version. You can also download the standalone updater from this page.
    2. If you are not using English as the primary language for your Mac, change to English & run Software Update. You can then switch back to your preferred language.
    3. Go to Mac App Store (MAS) > Click on Store > Check for Unfinished Downloads. You will need to individually click into each application > Click update > enter in your Apple ID & password and then it will start updating.
    4. Open App Store on your Mac & look at the buttons under Keynote, Pages & Numbers. If it does not say “Update” click Account under Quick Links, enter your password & click “View Account.”  Next, click the “Reset” button to the right of “Reset all warnings for buying and downloading” at the bottom of this page, & click Done. Check your updates tab & iWork & iLife updates should now appear.
These are the ones I've seen work for others.

  • Apple Modem will not answer after Time Machine Restore

After restoring from a Time Machine backup the Apple External Modem no longer answers incoming [fax] calls. I verified all modem/fax settings - they are good and the same as before the restore. The Modem Status in the Menu Bar doesn't indicate "ringing..." when the line is ringing and the Fax no longer answers.
Opening the Console I see these errors repeating endlessly-
    9/15/08 10:09:10 AM com.apple.service_helper[1271] com.apple.efax: Already loaded
9/15/08 10:09:10 AM [0x0-0x15015].com.apple.systempreferences[155] No matching processes were found
    9/15/08 10:09:27 AM com.apple.efax[1274] /usr/bin/fax: line 537: cd: /var/spool/fax: No such file or directory
I believe the fax app is supposed to create this dir, but I created the dir in /var/log/ as follows:
    drwxr-xr-x 2 root wheel 68 Sep 15 10:33 fax
Makes no difference, rebooted, still makes no difference, ran disk utility to see if it would change permissions, no it didn't - still getting the errors, so there's something else that's also missing after a restore, or the error message is erroneous since the dir now exists.
It appears a Time Machine Restore - doesn't restore all that's needed for the fax subsystem to work. I thought the restore was supposed to completely restore the volume to previous operating state?
Any help on this would be great, I now have no incoming FAX - one of the main jobs of this Mini - thx - KR

By the way, it's running OS X 10.5.4

  • Kernel failure after Time Machine restore

    Hi all,
My iMac recently had a hard disk failure.  I took it to the local Apple Store where they replaced the drive and reinstalled Mac OS X.  When I got the machine home all was working well... until I tried to restore from a Time Machine backup.  The restore process completed, apparently successfully, but when I attempted to boot the computer I got the following, which having Googled, I believe is a kernel panic:
    panic(cpu 1 caller 0x47f5ad): "Process 1 exec of /sbin/launchd failed, errno 8\n"@SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1504.15.3/bsd/kern/kern_exec.c:3145

I've tried holding down shift whilst booting but it just returns to the same error screen.
I've tried holding down command-option-p-r and waiting for the three chimes, but still the same error.
I've held down D whilst booting and run the Apple Hardware Test but not errors are reported.
I've booted from the installation CD and run disk utility, but no errors are reported.
I've tried booting into single user mode to run fsck but I get the same error message on an entirely black screen and it won't allow me to type.
I've tried holding down command-option-o-f but just get to the same error screen above.
I'm really at a loss as to what to do now, but I am panicking somewhat as I need the computer working ASAP and am paranoid I may have lost my entire music and photo collections.
Any advice and solutions would be hugely appreciated!
    Cheers.

I had the same problem and surreysimon's solution did not work for me.  Instead, I ran into same issues as Peter DK.  After trying many different combinations, I finally found a solution.  Basically use Time Machine that comes with Lion to restore.  Note: we are just using Lion's TM.  Not installing Lion.
Get OS X Lion and create a bootable DVD (Google it on how)
    http://www.macstories.net/mac/os-x-lion-installation-guide-boot-discs-and-qa/
Boot from OS X Lion CD (hold 'C' while booting the computer)
Use Disk Utility (4th item in Lion's OS X Utilities) to erase the target drive/partition
Restore From Time Machine Backup (1st item in Lion's OS X Utilities)
Doing this restored my Mac exactly as it was, i.e. w/ Snow Leopard and all my apps and data intact.  Here's an explaination of what I think happened.
My Mac originally came with SL 10.6.5 DVD.  I've been keeping up w/ software updates, which brought my Mac to SL 10.6.8.  I used my original DVD to restore TM backup which caused kernel panic.  My guess is the TM included with SL 10.6.5 is not able to properly restore TM backups made with SL 10.6.8.  If I had gotten SL 10.6.8 DVD, I suspect TM restore would have worked fine.  Instead, I used Lion DVD to restore TM backup which worked just as well.
surreysimon's solution didn't work because of the same issue.  I followed the steps using my original 10.6.5 DVD, but TM restore function as part of installation sequence would error saying the backup is newer version of OS X; same error Peter DK saw.  Using migration utility after installing and updating SL doesn't work.  It only restores data and not the apps.
In case you are wondering, I upgraded my other Mac to Lion but keeping this one on SL.  I'm seeing too many nagging issues with Lion which I hope Apple will fix before I upgrade this one.

Reboot the computer holding the trackpad button down, or left wired mouse button or eject key to force eject.
Clean the bottom of the disk with a bit of rubbing alcohol and a very soft cloth to polish to a shine.
Reboot the computer holding the c key down and try to boot off the Snow Leopard disk again.
Under Utilities menu select Disk Utility and your internal drive media on the left.
Select Partition Tab, 1 Partition, Option GUID, OS X Extended and click Apply.
Select the Erase Tab and Security Option> Zero All Data (takes a hour per 500GB and will map off bad sectors on the new drive that could be causing your KP's)
If your drive is not formatting, try the Zero Data Erase first
Once that's completed, install Snow Leopard, connect the TimeMachine drive,
Reboot and go through Setup, which you can then restore from the TM drive.
If it won't work restoring, use Software update to get to 10.6.8 and use the AppStore (option click on Purchases) to download Lion and install again, this time your machine will be fresh.
Now try to restore from TM and see if it works.
You can also hold down the shift key while booting to disable any incompatible third party kernel extensions is causing your issues.
Installing Lion on a fresh Snow Leopard install shouldn't have issue with third party kernel extensions.
Too bad you don't have a copy of your files off on a storage drive or a clone.
You can nitpick through TM image with this software if you have too.

  • ALL Photos missing after Time Machine restore  (help)

So, I accidently formated the wrong drive while in Windows, (big oops) which gave me the opportunity to take Time Machine for a test drive.
I put the DVD in, and was able to restore from the TIme Machine drive. Very impressed! Everything came back just as I had left it except - whats this? The default Leopard wallpaper instead of a picture of my son? Huh strange, I thought. Until I noticed I had no photos in iPhoto.
There seems to be reminents of photos in the iphoto database - the size is 1.3gb instead of the 7gb it used to be. But 0 photos in iPhoto 08.
I went into iPhoto and choose File/Browse Backups. I selected Nov 8th, which was the last day of my backup and showed all 7000+ photos, and clicked "Restore All". This brought up something odd - a 2nd iPhoto icon in the dock, which showed a progress bar for the restore. Once the restore was completed, I still had a 2nd iPhoto icon the the bar, which was iPhoto running - but no photos in iphoto! I exited the 2nd iphoto, which disappeared, and launched my normal Iphoto icon. Still no photos! (That just seems odd that it would launch iPhoto with a 2nd icon)
So, I moved my iphoto database, and launch iPhoto in order to create a fresh database - thinking maybe that was the issue. I then did File/Restore again, and went through the whole processes again, including the odd 2nd icon. Still, no photos! And another 1.3gb iphoto database!
Is it normal for a Time Machine restore to not include your photos? Surely you are not supposed to restore them separately from within Iphoto?
What do I do now? At this point, everything went very well - except no photos! Which is awful and not at all expected! 7000+ family photos! At least, if I ask iPhoto/Time Machine to restore 'all photos' you would think it would restore 'all photos' - not show a progress bar, and then show me no photos!
p.s. I just tooked at the iPhoto Library. The 1.3gb is in /Data/ which contains folders 2000-2007, my Events, and thumbnails of all the photos - but no actual photos (the 'Originals' folder is missing).
I then went back in time, and found the 8gb iPhoto Library database. I supposed I could copy it over manually via Time Machine, and not iPhoto's Restore/TM - but - i'm so far off track of how this should have went I don't know what to think!
p.s.s. So I did just that - copied the 8gb iPhoto Library manually from TM, and pasted it in place. I help down option, and launch iPhoto, selecting the 8gb library - and BOOM... no photos!
    Something is #$%# up here.

This is what it says in the help file:
Reverting to a previous Mac OS X version
If you’ve used Time Machine to back up your computer, you can easily revert to a previous version of Mac OS X if you’re experiencing trouble after installing an update.
IMPORTANT: Reverting to the previous version of Mac OS X will erase any additions or changes you’ve made to the files on your computer after installing the new version of Mac OS X. To save new or revised files, copy them onto a different disk or back them up using Time Machine before you follow these instructions. Use Time Machine only if you’re reverting to a previous version of Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard), since Time Machine is not available with Mac OS X 10.4 or earlier.
To revert to a previous version of Mac OS X:
Insert the disc you used to install the new version of Mac OS X, and double-click the Install Mac OS X icon.
In the Installer, choose Utilities > Restore System From Backup.
In the Restore Your System dialog, click Continue.
Select your Time Machine backup volume.
Select the Time Machine backup you want to restore. To restore your computer to the state it was in before you installed a new version of Mac OS X, choose the most recent backup.
    Follow the onscreen instructions.
If you backed up any individual files as described under the Important message above, you can restore them now. If you backed them up using Time Machine, recover them using the Time Machine application. (You’ll find the Time Machine application in the Dock or in the Applications folder.)
    Hope this helps

  • Computer wont boot after time machine restore

    Hi Guys,
I did a time machine restore last night and after it completed and i did a restart the computer gets stuck on the gray screen. I waited like 2 hours and it still doesn't get past that screen. I have tried every boot shortcut including target mode, single user mode etc. One problem is that i have disabled sounds so i cant hear the chime therefore not knowing when to push and hold the "t" or "c" button.
Am i doing something wrong? when do i start holding c or t?
Even when i put the mac osx dvd in it won't even boot from that. also tried holding c and booting from the dvd and that doesn't work.
    please help

Begin with the usual diagnostics in hopes of successfully booting your macbook. As Eric mentioned, have you tried booting with the Option key ?
If that fails, try the following, before forced to a re-install of the OS:
1: Boot up the machine via Safe Boot by holding the shift key. Since your volume is off, ideally you want to wait a second or two where the chime would come in. Note that if the safe boot is successful it will take some more time to boot as it checks for disk errors. Make sure and repair your permissions if you get through !
2: If that fails reset your PRAM, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379

  • Why did Mail do an upgrade/import after Time Machine restore?

I just did a full Time Machine restore of my Mac after a hard drive issue (Yosemite). Everything looks OK overall, but when I launched Mail.app, it did a full upgrade/import, as though I'd just upgraded from an earlier version and needed to update the database. Is that normal? Why is it necessary? Thanks!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
exclamation point when trying to view an individual image).
The exclamation point is an indication that iPhoto has lost the link/file path to the original file. Are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
If you're running a "managed" library try the three fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in the User/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select last three options.
    Fix #3
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Gray Screen After Time Machine Restore

I have an iMac running Snow Leopard (most recent update) I recently tried norton antivirus for the mac but found that it slowed down my mac too much so i uninstalled it with the uninstaller. The error i got was a circle with a line thru it at startup. After following steps on disk repair and permission repair i still couldnt get rid of this so I did a restore from time machine. I used the original disk (not the snow leopard upgrade disk) to reach the time machine restore. After trying 2 different backups I'm now getting the gray screen that asks me to restart my imac. I've unplugged everything else. The internal hard drive and ram are all factory.
Any suggestions for a frustrated iMac user ???

    HI Corey,
There are no Mac viruses in the wild. Unfortunately, you selected the worst A/V software possible. Here's a list of Mac users who installed Norton. http://discussions.apple.com/search.jspa?search=Go&q=norton
After trying 2 different backups I'm now getting the gray screen that asks me to restart my imac.
    That's a kernel panic.
Thing to do now is a complete erase and install from your SL disc.
