Mac OS Tiger keeps asking to restart when zip 250MB SCSI is turned on.

Every since I updated to OS Tiger 10.4.8, I can't start up with my zip drive turned on. OS starts to boot then the screen goes grey and it ask me to either restart my computer or hold the power button down to restart. If I turn my zip drive off, the computer will start up fine. Can anyone assist on this?

You are having a kernel panic, and this one is clearly related to the hardware (zip drive). If you are restarting without carrying out any repairs or maintenance, you may compound the problems.
It may be that there are drivers that need to be updated, and a check with the zip drive maker may assist. I would also suggest a look at some of the preventative measures that may be helpful at Dr Smoke's site.

How do I get bing off my Mac. Safari keeps defaulting to Bing when I search. Thank you.

You installed the "Genieo" search-hijacking rootkit. There is an uninstaller, but as the developer is dishonest, you can't use it. I suggest the tedious procedure below to disable Genieo.
Back up all data. You must know how to restore from a backup even if the system becomes unbootable. If you don't know how to do that, or if you don't have any backups, stop here and ask for guidance.
    Step 1
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /etc/launchd.conf
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
    from the contextual menu.
If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
A folder may open with a file selected, or the file may not exist, in which case you'll get a message that it can't be found. If it does exist, it's a configuration file created or replaced by the Genieo installer. Any software installer that does this should be considered ipso facto malware. Move the file to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your administrator password. Then restart, empty the Trash, and continue as below.
IMPORTANT: If the launchd.conf file exists, you must move it to the Trash and restart before continuing. Otherwise the system may become unbootable. In that case, restore from your backup and start over. That's how badly Genieo has sabotaged your system. If you're not completely sure you can complete this step, stop here and ask for guidance.
Some variants of Genieo don't include the launchd.conf file. The absence of that file doesn't mean that Genieo is not installed.
    Step 2
Quit the Genieo application, if it's running. Force quit if necessary.
Move each of these items to the Trash in the same way as above:
    /Applications/Genieo.app
    /Applications/Uninstall Genieo.app
    /Library/Frameworks/GenieoExtra.framework
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.engine.plist
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.client.plist
    /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.client
    /usr/lib/libgenkit.dylib/usr/lib/libgenkitsa.dylib
    /usr/lib/libimckit.dylib
    /usr/lib/libimckitsa.dylib
There's no need to restart after each one. Again, some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
Restart and empty the Trash. Don't try to empty the Trash until you have restarted.
Your web browser(s) should now function normally, and you should be able to reset the home page and search engine. If not, stop here and post your results.
    Step 3
From the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including ones called "Genieo" or "Omnibar," and any that have the word "Spigot" or "InstallMac" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
This procedure may leave a few files behind, but it should deactivate Genieo. Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install it. Chances are you got it from one of the Internet's open sewers such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site.
Finally, be forewarned that when Genieo is mentioned on this site, the developer sometimes shows up under the name "Genieo support." If that happens, don't believe anything he says, but feel free to tell him what you think of his scam.

  • Setup problem, windows xp, firefox upgrade to 4 and asked to reboot but did not progress. keeps asking to restart even if I try to remove

setup problem, windows xp, firefox upgrade to 4 and asked to reboot but did not progress. keeps asking to restart even if I try to remove

    Hi marsano,
Usually the only reason it will ask you to reboot is if there is a file that must be modified that the updater doesn't currently have access to. You should try running the Firefox program once as Administrator:
    * Right-click the icon and choose ''Run as Administrator''
If that doesn't help then do a clean reinstall.
    # Download a fresh copy of Firefox from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox/fx/ Mozilla download page] and save the file to the desktop.
    # [[Uninstalling Firefox|Uninstall]] your current version of Firefox and remove the Firefox program folder before running the new installer.
    # Run installer
Remember that you don't want to remove personal data when uninstalling. That way you'll still have your personal information.
    Hopefully this helps!

  • Ever since I updated to Yosemite my mac book pro keeps asking for Apple Id and password but will not accept them

Ever since I updated to Yosemite my mac book pro keeps asking for Apple Id and password but will not accept them.  What can I do?

Try the advice here. I had the same problem and it worked for me.
You have to delete the "SC Info" folder from /Users/Shared. You will have to use Terminal to enable you to see this folder first. Make sure iTunes is not running when you delete the "SC Info" folder
There is an article from Apple on this here. The "SC Info" folder contains iTunes authorization information.
I did this two weeks ago and iTunes accepted by login. I haven't been asked for my AppleID or password since.

  • New hard drive installed in Mac.  iTunes keeps asking to authorize a very old email address which is not associated with my iPhone and I cannot sync iTunes to my iPhone.

New hard drive installed in Mac.  iTunes keeps asking to authorize a very old email address which is not associated with my iPhone and I cannot sync iTunes to my iPhone.

It is referring to purchases made using an Apple ID that was set with that email as the Apple ID. Did you simply create a new Apple ID when the old email address was no longer being used? If so, then that old Apple ID is still tied (and will always be tied) to the purchases made with it, and you will have to sign into iTunes with that Apple ID in order to authorize the computer to it.
If you don't remember the password for it, you can go to Manage your Apple ID and click on Reset password. If you don't remember the answers to your Security Questions, you can contact Apple Support to get them reset:

  • MBA 2011 keeps asking to restart

    Hi
My MBA 2011 keeps asking to restart. I have done this so many times and it keeps asking me at the log in page.
    Can anyone help?

If you're getting the restart screen that has several languages on it, that's a kernel panic. A kernel panic is usually, but not always, caused by a hardware issue, with memory the leading cause.  Since your MBA is a 2011 model, it's under warranty, so I'd take it to an Apple store for support.

    Hi Praveen,
Thank you again for your assistance.
The only thing that I do is after reboot is double click the setup.exe and then I click the Configuration Checker.

That suggests the problem is due to third-party software that's installed. Try uninstalling the Telestream software. Use the uninstaller that came with the Telestream software if there is one. Otherwise, follow the instructions below. In particular you want to remove the extension that was installed in the /System/Library/Extensions/ folder for Telestream.
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead.  Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
    AppZapper
    Automaton
    Hazel
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • My Macbook Air Keeps Asking to Restart

I finished downloading the newest version of iTunes, and then it asked to restart the computer, which I did. But now, I only get a black screen with a bunch of writing in French, English and Chinese, telling me the computer needs to be restarted and that I need to hit either the restart button or the start up button, and hold that button for a few seconds until the computer shuts down. I did that numerous times and I still get that same message in different languages.
    What's going on?

    Hi darcin5261,
What you're describing is actually called a "kernel panic" and it's the result of software or hardware that is not operating properly and forcing the machine to shut down. When exactly does the screen appear in the startup process, is before the Apple logo appears on the screen or after?
A couple of things to try...
1.) Startup the computer in Safe mode but holding the SHIFT key on startup until the login window appears.
2.) Connect the Super Drive (optional accessory) and attempt to startup from the System Restore disc to verify/repair the HD. Likewise you can also perform this step by using another computer (Mac or PC) via Remote Disc.

  • Keeps asking for password when trying to purchase photobook and will not let me proceed - help!

  • Mail keeps asking for password when I enter and try to send messages

When ever I enter 'mail' and then try to send messages it always ask for a password in both instances. I have changed the preferences and added the password and when I save the changes they don't appear as changed

OK. When you say that Mail doesn’t save the password, are you basing this solely on the fact that Mail keeps asking for it? Or is there something else that makes you believe Mail doesn’t save the password?
Open /Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access, choose Keychain First Aid from the application menu, and proceed to repair the keychain. If that doesn’t work, try removing the password entry from the keychain and let Mail create it again the next time it asks for it.
