Mac OS X 10.3.2 won't let me in

I purchased the apple I book with the Panther OS X software. It works beautifully but I think I got a bug that now doesn't let me open my CD drive- not the problem I'm addressing though. So I downloaded the OS X 10.3.2 update from the Apple Site - computer restarted, loaded, yet won't go past the blue screen after the initial apple logo loading screen; the only thing visible is the mouse pointer in the corner, yet even this won't move. I turned off the comp and tried the manual's advice and held OPT, CTRL, and Shift then pressed the power button, yet then the computer won't even turn on when I try this. I'm not that MAC literate and am completely at ends! Please help

When you downloaded the 10.3.2 update from the Apple site did you get the intermediate or the Combo updater? If you had 10.3 installed, then you needed the Combo updater. If that's not what you used to update, then you need to download the 10.3.2 Combo Updater and install it. Assuming nothing else has been affected this should work.
Before you install the update I recommend you do the following:
Boot from your Panther Installer. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu. After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
