Mac OS X 10.3 - characters such as È è É é instead of punctuation

I purchased a second hand ibook. It is a G4 1.07 GHz.
I have a normal looking keyboard. When I type a question mark I get É, for forward slash I get é, for apostrophe I get è, and for quotation marks I get È. I get 'and " instead of left and right arrows.
I have wiped the hard drive and installed a fresh copy of 10.3 and updated to 10.3.9. I have set my language to english but I still get these characters instead of the normal characters.
I canèt seem to find a way to change them. Can anyone helpÉ Itès getting really annoying. Ièm sure it is a basic setting but I canèt seem to find what to do.
Thanks

Once you click the checkboxes in International preferences
\[ ] Show Keyboard Viewer palette, and
\[ ] Show Input Menu in MenuBar
close it and save changes, you should get a tiny Flag in your menuBar, to the left of the speaker Volume Icon. Is it a US Flag, if you intend to use US keyboard? If not, Choose the flag menu, and from it choose "Open International" This will show you a huge list of keyboard/Language assignments, and allow you to make changes.
If the flag is US, and you think there may be key problems, Choose the Flag Menu, and from it choose Keyboard palette, and be patient for a quarter minute and a tiny image of your keyboard will appear. If any keys are grayed out, it is because they are being seen as always-ON. Press any key and you should see the palette darken the key it sees you pressing. Hold modifier keys like control, Shift, and Option, and the whole keyboard will change to reflect the character you would get by pressing that shifted (modified) key.

  • Characters such as hearts and stars won't show up on Firefox

    I'm running on a Mac OS X 10.4.11 and my Firefox is 3.6.6.
    When I run all my other browsers (safari, opera) I'm able to see characters such as hearts and stars on a site like facebook. Only on firefox does it not show up, it doesn't even show boxes - it's just a blank space. It's really annoying, and I've tried everything with the character encoding to no avail. Font is still set to Western ISO 8859-1. is there a font I'm missing? But that can't be because I can see it in other browsers. Please please tell me someone's encountered something like this before. I haven't found anything anywhere so far. :/
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == since I downloaded Firefox (approx. 3 years ago - only actively using now)

    I've had this problem (specifically, '''& hearts ;''' ) for years.
    When Firefox 3 was released I thought the upgrade from FF 2 would fix it. Nope.
    I went all out today and upgraded to Firefox 6. I created a fresh, new profile in the Profile Manager. No dice.
    I took the advice of those above and checked my OS X Font Book. I disabled many of the fonts that didn't validate, but some of them I use, so I'm hoping this isn't causing the issue.
    Safari (see screenshot attached) and Chrome display ♥ just fine, so why can't Firefox. Surely, some savvy open source gal/guy can figure this one out. :)

  • Characters such as apostrophes and smart quotes turning into boxes or question marks

    We recently upgraded from CF5 to CF7 and are having a problem
    with previously saved text that no longer displays correctly. Some
    characters (apparently, non-ASCII characters such as curly
    apostrophes and smart quotes) are rendering as boxes or question
    marks. We recently upgraded to Oracle 10g from Oracle 8i, but this
    problem appears to be independent of the database that the text is
    stored in. Here is sample code that will illustrate the problem:
    <CFSET string1="Department’s">
    <CFSET string2="hey—there">
    <CFOUTPUT>
    string1 is #string1#
    <BR>
    string2 is #string2#
    </CFOUTPUT>
    output looks like this:
    string1 is Department?s
    string2 is hey?there
    These are rendered as boxes when viewed in Internet Explorer.
    (They show up as question marks when I copy and paste them here.)
    The Demoronize UDF helps *some* of the time, but this is
    still happening with a lot of text, especially text that gets
    pasted from a website into a form, then saved to a database. Does
    anybody have a solution for this? This is breaking my applications
    and is incredibly annoying. I'd like to either replace the
    problematic characters at the time they are displayed, or replace
    them when they are input in the database in the first place (and go
    back and update all the previously saved data to replace the
    problematic characters with plain text equivalents).
    Any suggestions appreciated.

    I finally isolated the problematic characters so I edited the
    DeMoronize UDF (available at cflib.org) by adding the following
    text replacements at the bottom:
    text = Replace(text, chr(8208), "-", "ALL");
    text = Replace(text, chr(8209), "-", "ALL");
    text = Replace(text, chr(8210), "&ndash;", "ALL");
    text = Replace(text, chr(8211), "&ndash;", "ALL");
    text = Replace(text, chr(8212), "&mdash;", "ALL");
    text = Replace(text, chr(8213), "&mdash;", "ALL");
    text = Replace(text, chr(8214), "||", "ALL");
    text = Replace(text, chr(8215), "_", "ALL");
    text = Replace(text, chr(8216), "&lsquo;", "ALL");
    text = Replace(text, chr(8217), "&rsquo;", "ALL");
    text = Replace(text, chr(8218), ",", "ALL");
    text = Replace(text, chr(8219), "'", "ALL");
    text = Replace(text, chr(8220), "&ldquo;", "ALL");
    text = Replace(text, chr(8221), "&rdquo;", "ALL");
    text = Replace(text, chr(8222), """", "ALL");
    text = Replace(text, chr(8223), """", "ALL");
    text = Replace(text, chr(8226), "&middot;", "ALL");
    text = Replace(text, chr(8227), "&gt;", "ALL");
    text = Replace(text, chr(8228), ".", "ALL");
    text = Replace(text, chr(8229), "..", "ALL");
    text = Replace(text, chr(8230), "...", "ALL");
    text = Replace(text, chr(8231), "&middot;",
    "ALL");

  • How to handle special characters such as apostrophe, ampersant

    Hello All,
    Tools:
    JSP, JSDK 2
    Oracle 8
    Issue:
    If the user supplies a String value inside a text box which has special characters such as apostrophe, while we try to compare that string with some value in the database, the sql error comes up as the sql string will be broken.
    Example:
    input string--> ABC D'OLL
    sql --> "select * from verndor where vendor_name ='ABC D'OLL' "
    Present solution:
    I am reading each input string & look for such special characters. if so, replaces that character with escape character + that character.
    This solution works.
    Problem:
    If there any more efficient way to handle such character??
    At java level or Database level
    Thanks In advance :)

  • Latin characters such as 'à' must be replaced with the ASCII equivalent 'a'

    Hi,
    I struck up in my development at "Latin characters must be replaced with the ASCII equivalent".
    Do let me know the solution if any of you have implemented it before.
    Any kind of help is appreciated.
    Thanks
    MMK

    OK, more in detail ..
    I'm generating user ID based on First and Last name, if user enters latin characters as a part of his name, i should replace those LATIN characters with ASCII equivalent while generating unique user ID in the portal.
    A requirement for legacy system is that the user id's must contain only ASCII characters, therefore Latin characters such as 'à' must be replaced with the ASCII equivalent i.e. 'a'.
    I hope it is more clear ..
    Thanks

    You may have installed the "VSearch" trojan, perhaps under a different name. Remove it as follows.
    Malware is constantly changing to get around the defenses against it. The instructions in this comment are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
    Back up all data before proceeding.

    Right-click or control-click the line and select

    Reset the home page and default search engine in all the browsers, if it was changed.
    This trojan is distributed on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect much worse to happen in the future.
    You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that this Internet criminal has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing, has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.

  • Mac file name restrictions/special characters

    What are the Mac OS file name restrictions? What are the special characters to avoid?

    Thanks, Sagesse. I'm new to the Mac OS. Is it tied to Unix in such a way that the colons are allowed?

  • Certain characters such as "-" in UTF-8 are not displayed correctly in file

    Hi,
    Has anyone else seen a similar scenario?
    There are certain characters entered in the R/3 system (UTF-8) such as a and ("), which looks different then the normal dash or quotation, in a free form text field.  The values of these fields are transferred through XI via abap proxy and written to a mainframe file via the file adapter.  The default file encoding of our XI system is ISO-8859-1.  When the file is created these characters are interpreted as a (?).   When we change the encoding to UTF-8 in the receiver adapter, it translates the characters as (b.).  When I write the file out to the file system with encoding UTF-8, everything looks normal.
    Can anyone shed some light on this situation?
    Thanks.
    Best Regards,
    Duke

    Hi Stefan,
    To clarify, the (") the user is entering are curly quotes.  I found this on google.
    Windows ANSI (224 characters; since Win3.1). This adds the accented characters common in Western European languages (including vowels with acute, grave, circumflex and umlaut accents), plus some other typographical symbols like u201Ccurly quotesu201D, bullets, currency symbols etc. The additional 126 characters above the ASCII set are called u201CUpper ANSIu201D.
    This is a flat file using content conversion on the receiver file adapter.  In SXMB_MONI it looks correct.  If I do a view source, I can see that the quotations are the "curly quotes" and not the same as when I enter the character.
    Best Regards,
    Duke

  • Mac Mail is displaying strange characters

    My Mac Mail is displaying these strange characters on a number of seemingly random emails from people. However, when I copy the message and paste it into a word document or the internet browser address bar it converts these "letter A in a box" characters into what the words actually were. But this is a hassle and I'd rather just be able to read the text directly in my mail application... Thanks for the help.. hopefully it is a simple fix.

  • Converting MS-WORD characters such as smart quotes into standard quotes

    Hi,
    This is a problem when taking text from a MS Word file and pasting it into a browser editor. The Java code doesnt interpret these smart quotes correctly.
    Any ideas on how to convert these to standard characters that can be understood by Java
    Regards
    Chris

    sorry what i meant was an application called MorelloNot a web application, then? Doesn't run in a browser?
    If so, then where does Java come into this? Is Morello written in Java, or do you have a Java application that is interfacing with Morello in some unspecified way? And where does the console come into it? You said that people were pasting text into Morello, so surely it isn't console-based?
    You clearly have an encoding problem but from your description it's impossible to tell where it arises or what you can do to fix it.

  • Unable to add special characters such as # and ( in headers of Report in Text format

    Hi,
    I am working on developing a report that will be exported to tab delimited text format from SSRS. The Report has been developed and it is getting exported to tab delimited text format. However, special characters in the heading are getting trimmed. I would
    like to get these special characters in the heading of text file. Any help in this regard will be appreciated.

    Hi Abhijit,
    Per my understanding that you have add an extension which export the report as .txt format, now the issue is the special characters"#" not display after exportted, right?
    I have tested on my local environment and can reproduce the issue , this is by default, when you type some special characters "#" as the textbox name  in the properties window or as calculatted field name you will get error pop up window,
    if you type the text in the textbox as "#" it will also not display in the CSV or tab delimited text format report.
    But we have some alternative method to make them display some way, more details information below for your reference:
    Display "#" in the table header
    If we want to make them display in the table header, we need to create an new table an put all the table header as one record in the table, because the value in the table can display "#" correctly:
    I assumed you have four columns as the table header(Test1#,Test2#,Test3#,Test4#) please create an new table (HeaderTable )to store these value:
    Create two dataset2:
    Dataset1: display the record from step1
    DataSet2:display the record of the report
    Create two Tablixs as below and both remove the header column, Tablix1(Dataset1) diplay the value comes from the step1 as the new header column:
     Tablix1(Dataset2):Report Data
    In this way, when export to tab delimited txt, you will got the table header display correctly.
    Display "#" in the textbox outisde of the tablix
    If you just want to display "#" outside the tablix, you can just add an calculatted field(Test) and use expression like below to specify the value which you want to display in the calculatted field:
    ="test######test"
    Then you can use below expression in the textbox:
    =first(Fields!Test.Value, "DataSetName")
    If you still have any problem, please feel free to ask.
