Mac OS X 10.4.11 Server gets extremely slow - virtual memory huge.

Hi there,
we use a XServe G5 with Mac OS X Server 10.4.11 installed for Directory and File Services. Since 2004 the server worked without any problems. But now it gets really slow sometimes. Using the keyboard connected directly to the XServe it is even hard to reboot it. We found out after trying to locate the error that the virtual memory is about 24 GB. That size is nearly unmanageable for that server. I don't know how the virtual memory gets that huge.
Is there a possibility to limit the virtual memory? Any other suggestions?
Thanks for your help!

Hello,
You can't increase the processor speed,  what you can increase is the drive space (Either delete old files or replace the drive for a larger one) You could also increase the memory from 2.5 GB to 4 GB which should help speed this MacBook up a little more.
Upgrading the OS to Leopard wont make much difference on the speed of your MacBook, but it would increase the updates available. personally I would clear down files on my Hard drive, archive on USB disk anything not required. Then install more RAM were possible,
Best of luck

  • Macbook Pro gets Extremely slow when itunes is open

When I launch Itunes my mac gets extremely slow. I mean so slow that right now it is open and i am watching my words catch up to my typing. If I play a song on itunes my processor doesn't go about 40% and it is still extremely slow. I even tried to wirelessly sync my iphone and it still is like this. Any one know why. I have lion with all updates. If I don't launch itunes I'm fine When I launch Itunes It drags like a mother...lol any and all help appreciated TIA!!

How much free space on the startup disk?
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you have a minimum of 15% free disk space.

  • Subscribed calendars - iPhone calendar gets extremly slow.

Hi, I tried to use subscribed calendars on iPhone. Due to the fact that there is still no brithday calendar implemented on iPhone I had to add several calendards:
1: brithday calendar - I published the iCal birthday calendar to mobile me.
2: calendar week - as there is still no ISO calendar week on iPhones CalApp I subscribed for a calendar with whole day events on every monday - showing the week number.
    3: a friends calendar - A standard Google calendar
With these three subscriptions, my MobileMe calendar and my ActiveSync the CalApp on iPhone gets extremely slow. Does anybody else does have the same problems. Having a limit with not more than two subscribed calendars, app speed is slow but acceptable. Having just one subscribed calendar we can speak about normal behavior.

You could reduce to 2 subscribed feeds by using a ISO calendar that is merged into an existing calendar in your .mac account instead of as a subscribed feed. Those numbered weeks aren't going to change, so why not just make permanent? I did the same thing in my Google calendar.
I have subscribed to 5 calendar feeds in iPhone 3.0 and have no speed performance issues. However, the calendar app only displays information for one of the subscribed feeds! I cannot get the other feeds to work. I have tried installing each one before and after the one working feed, but still they do not work. All the feeds work in iCal on my computer.
The 4 feeds that are not working properly on the iPhone are schedules to my favorite MLB, NFL and college teams from Yahoo! Sports. I want subscribed feeds because game times and t.v. listings change from week to week.
This is disappointing because subscribed calendar feeds was the major improvement I wanted to see in 3.0.

My MacBook Air running on Snow Leopard gets extremely slow (almost like a hang, except if you wait about half an hr, it actually moves) after login interface. Sometimes it never gets past the background of the homepage, desktop doesn't seem to load. After multiple forced shut downs and left to run for hours, sometimes the desktop loads but the dock does not respond when applications are opened. The computer is then unable to shut down normally. Forced shut downs are necessary most times. Time machine backup takes extremely long, and attempts to use the time machine to bring the laptop back to the time befiore the problem arose was met with extremely slow and hung time machine function.
    Please help!

There isn't much besides a failing hard drive or other hardware fault that can cause those symptoms. Run the Apple Hardware Test, or just take it to an Apple Store for testing.

  • PP CC 2014 Gets Extremely slow the larger my project gets on a new Mac Pro

My editing team and I have 3 of the new mac pro 3.7 GHZ Quad Core with 12 GB Ram, OSX10.9.3. We edit a TV show and the longer the timeline gets the slower PP gets. The problem is gradual, but by the time I get a timeline that is over 10 minutes long PP becomes very slow and unresponsive. Once my show reaches the 30 minute mark it's extremely slow. The main problem is with playback. I hit play and it takes anywhere from 10 to 20 seconds or more to even start playing. I'm editing footage from a Sony FS 700 and a Sony PXW-Z100, 1080i footage with no effects. Color correction and audio mixing is painfully slow once my timeline is complete. We converted from FCP7 and never had this problem with that program on the same computers. This problem is the same on all 3 computers so this can't be an isolated issue with just one computer.

Sorry about that. You say you work in a team environment. Are you with CC for Teams or do each of you have individual licenses?
Do you work with networked drives? How does the project work if media is on local drives?
Do you have a deep organization system where the media is in a folder inside a folder, inside a folder, etc.? What happens if you simplify naming conventions and folder organization?
Do you use long names for your clips and sequences? What happens if you try shorter clips names and sequences.
Do you store the preview files and media cache database locally and on a fast drive? If not, move these files to a local drive.
Does the audio sample rate match sequence settings precisely? Mismatched settings can cause performance issues.
Do you use the Warp Stabilizer effect liberally? The project can bloat if too many Warp Stabilizer effects are added.
Is the project file migrated from an earlier version of Premiere Pro? Never update a project file to a new version of Premiere Pro. Remain on the current version until that project is complete.
If so, any or all of these items could be the root cause(s) of the problem for poor performance. Do some tests and post back about your findings.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

  • Server 2012 extremly slow

    Hi!
Just installed MS Server 2012 R2 Standard 64-bits on a HP Pro Liant 380p host. When trying to connect the network cable to the network and domain the GUI becomes extremly slow (can't drag the mouse without waiting for some seconds or open windows). We
have no indication on the preformance meters and need to unplug the cable to be able to use the GUI. Anyone have a solution for this problem?

    Hi
I would suggest getting up to date drivers for the machine. Also check the event viewer on what is failing.
how much ram do you have in the server?
Hope this helps. Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.
Drivers is up to date, event viewer gives no information and it's 96GB RAM installed.

  • When playing games on facebook, I often get the message "virtual memory too low, is being increased" Is there something I can do to clean out the "virtual memory" to avoid this?

As mentioned in my question above, it happens usually during playing games. I wondered if there were someway to clean out the virtual memory, as opposed to it "increasing" continually and overloading my memory in general. You are speaking with a computer novice for the most part, so I am unfamiliar with a lot. I do do updates and general maintenance on the computer, but is that enough for this issue?

Physical memory is the memory that is installed on your computer as real memory. To be able to run programs that require more memory and more programs at the same time (via time sharing and task switching) it is also possible to move (swap) currently not needed code and data to disk to make room for other programs and data. The total memory available for programs is the Virtual Memory.
You can check the Virtual Memory settings here: Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance > Settings (Advanced tab)<br />
Windows can manage more memory then is physical available and that memory is stored in a page file on your hard drive.
If the size of that file is not large enough and all available memory is in use then you get the Virtual Memory is low warning.
Make sure that you have at least 1 GB or the recommended setting for the Virtual Memory.
If you have less than 1 GB physical memory installed on your computer then if possible add more memory.

  • Exchange 2013 with Outlook on RDS Server is extremely slow

Exchange 2013 CU5 on Server 2012 R2 fresh install/new to domain; Outlook 2010 or 2013 on Remote Desktop server not in cached mode is slow to open, search and send messages with attachments.  Opening messages and opening attachments runs quickly.
My test mailbox has 300kb worth of mail in it and sending a message with a 5Mb attachment locks up Outlook for close to 1 minute and takes another 30 to 90 seconds to disappear from the outbox and and move to sent items.  This issue does not present
itself in OWA.  My current testing RDS environment is a fresh install of Server 2008 R2 with Outlook 2013.  No additional add-ins or AV running on the Exchange server or the test RDS server.
When cached mode is enabled, Outlook runs better as shown in Outlook 2010 (+ Exchange 2013) works extremely slow; however, I don't consider this an option because there isn't enough drive space on the RDS server to cache all of the user profiles.
Other Exchange environments - Outlook 2010 or 2013 in an RDS environment (non-cached) with Exchange 2007 or 2010 - don't show the same performance issues.  Moving within Outlook and sending large attachments runs quickly.
I have checked Exchange throttling settings and monitored logs, but have not found cases where my test user is being throttled.  I have also looked at turning off IPv6 based on another post's suggestion; however, I have seen conflicting information
about disabling IPv6 for Server 2012 R2, so I have not yet gone down this path.
The Exchange server is a VM on a new VMware host and has assigned 8 cores from Intel Xeon E5-2640 procs and 16GB RAM; 1TB thick provisioned database volume on a RAID 5 array with 6 x 10k RPM SAS drives.  Disk queues are low on the Exchange server (in
the .20 to .70 range).  My test RDS server is on the same VMware host on the same vSwitch.  Another test system is on a different system, but exhibiting the same behavior.

    Hi,
How about the suggestion from Festivalman?
Feel free to contact me if there is any update.

  • Reset hub and now getting extremely slow speeds...

    Hi there,
So I have had bt broadband for 3 months and had nothing but problems. The speed is very slow, though I do live in a rural area so somewhat to be expected. However in the evenings I have noticed I can get extremely high pings (1000+) and slow speeds (below 0.5 mbps).
Recently however my usual daytime speeds of around 1.2 mbps shot up to around 3 mbps, which to me is quite high! (compared to what I have been getting).
Though it dropped off a bit over the past few days (to around 2.2 mbps) it was still working ok, until last night when I reset my homehub as my sister was unable to connect to it at all.
Since then I have had nearly none existant speeds. Even getting on here was a mission. I am getting speeds of around 0.10 mbps, though my ping seems to vary wildly from around 50 all the way back up to silly numbers.
I attempted to use the bt speed test, but it told me it couldn't get a reading cos my line was too slow!
I did however get one eventually from BT wholesale as below. (it won't let me copy it in?...)
    Download speed (mbps): 0.14
    Upload speed (mbps): 0.35
    Ping Latency (ms): 69.63
    Speedtest.net give the following
Really getting fed up with the unreliable and slow connection. When added to the problems getting a line installed in the first place (it took 3 months!) and problems I have had in the past, I am seriously looking to see what other options I have, but there aren't many good providers that will set us up out here
Can anyone help me get a stable, reasonably fast connection?
    Thanks,
    Richard

I currently have the hub connected to the master socket via a filter. I have tried on the main socket and master socket with two different filters and nothing changed...
As for the btspeedtester, I was unable to successfully run that...It just says my connection may be too slow (no kidding!)
Finally, regarding the quiet line test...I don't actually have a phone at the moment. I only wanted broadband as I rarely make phone calls from the house and use my mobile. I am looking to get one for the sole purpose of fixing this issue (and ringing bt to have a whinge at them)

  • My TC getting extremely slow

Hello guys. I use my TC just as a hard drive. I have been saving HD videos there. One of the reasons I bought the TC is because I have a lot of HD movies and they occupy a lot of space, so I save them. I have been saving movies and videos there long time ago, but I started with the HD one week ago. Today it started getting very slow and I don't know why. I thought it was because I was occupying a lot of space since the movies are from 3 to 5 GB, but I have video folders that are even bigger. Does someone knows what is going on and how can I solve it?

A 500ms+ first hop delay is not good.   You should be seeing 10-20ms.  Just to take DNS out of the picture ... run the tracert again with the "-d" option to not do name resolution.
If it goes away when you use the "-d" option, then you have DNS issues.
If it doesn't go away, then it's in the first hop.  First thing to try is always rebooting the router, followed by a reset and reboot of the router.  These are both easy to do.
Generally not encouraged, one thing you could should these not yield any change in behavior would be to reset the ONT.  Unplug the battery on the power supply block feeding the ONT and then unplug the power brick for about a minute and then plug in the ONT and reattached the battery.
As you mention multiple PC's, I'm sure you disconnected everything but one PC which you then tested directly connected to a port on the router?  And you've done this on at least 2 different PC's just to rule out anything hardware related in the PC itself?

  • Mac book pro bought 6 month ago get super slow.

I bought my mac bok pro six month ago, now to boot up it takes 4-5 minutes also speed is quite slow any suggestions. have already tried downloading updates and have also installed LION.
    Thanks.

You can--here is a link to some very explicit step by step instructions:
    http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/14.html
The main concern would be anything you might have on Lion that would not be compatible with Snow Leopard. If your Mail is in the Lion Mail format, you may not be able to put it back into Snow Leopard successfully. So if you just upgraded to Lion, and have a recent Time Machine backup that goes back to Snow Leopard, you can restore to where you were before upgrading to Lion without losing very much.
You can also up the RAM  to 8 GB yourself for about $72. I am pretty sure that OWC ships overseas. If you want to stick with lion, this might be a good option.

  • Snow Leopard Server running extremely slow all of a sudden!!

Hi, I'm not a qualified server technician but am currently trying my best to run a server in a Secondary School! Please help, need to fix ASAP.
So basically we've got a Mac Pro running Snow Leopard server which has become incredibly slow in the past week. Nothing has changed in our department to trigger this. Here's everything I know so far...
    - If I try to log on to the admin account when "Some Network Accounts Are Available", log on will take under a minute. If I try to log on to the admin account when the light goes green and "Network Accounts Are Available" log on will take forever and eventually just crash and which point I have to just force a shutdown and try again.
    - When I can log on, some aspects of the computing seems fast and other aspects are really slow. For example, a few programs open as soon as I log on no problem, however a simple spotlight search or trying to open Sytem Preferences will crash the computer completely.
    - Have tried booting in Safe Mode, and everything ran fast and how it's mean to but once restarting and booting normally the problems remained.
Sorry for the lack of knowledge!!
    Thanks in advance.

Your comment indicates "crash the computer"?  Do you mean that OS X Server itself fails, and you have to reboot?  Or that the application crashes, and you have to restart it?
The following are some general approaches toward gathering some data:
Launch Console.app from Applications > Utilities and see if there are blocks of repeating errors.
Launch Terminal.app from Applications > Utilities and issue the following harmess, diagnostic command:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
After entering an administrative password and possibly seeing a one-time informational message about sudo, you should see some network configuration information and then an indication that no changes are required, or that there are DNS or network errors.
Boot from the Snow Leopard installation DVD and run a volume verification pass using Disk Utility, this from the Utilities menu of the installation disl.
    FWIW...
If the applications or OS X Server are crashing, then you're generally heard toward either a reinstallation of the software, or a hardware repair, or quite possibly a combination of the two.
Forcing a hard shutdown can lead to corruptions, depending on exactly what's going on when the power drops out; that's probably best left as a last-resort approach and one best avoided.

  • DNS server responses extremely slow

I set up the DNS Server running on my LAN (authoritative for a fully-owned domain), and I do believe it's correctly set up - reverse mapping works fine, no error messages in the logs or while watching tcpdump, etc. It's behind my NAT/Firewall, is set to be recursive (but I have not tweaked it to make it recursive only for the subnet). My problem is with the performance. Using this internal DNS server to provide DNS for my client machines on the LAN, internet lookups are awfully slow - perhaps five to ten seconds to bring up a major site. Leaving everything else the same on a client machine, and removing the references to the internal DNS server - thus using my ISP's DNS servers outside my LAN - the same site can by fully up in one second.
Is this major lag in performance simply caused by the fact that the ISP's DNS server is so often caching many many more sites than I could ever request from my own LAN? Or should I be looking for something specific to hunt down perfformance problems?

If your server is stand-alone, you can run without internal DNS.
If OD Master, you also can run without internal DNS but config of course needs to be correct. Many people say it's best to run with internal DNS, but it's not a requirement.
One reason to run internal DNS..
If you connect to your server by fqdn (host.domain.com).
Without internal DNS, the client will connect to the public IP (wan side of your router). If your router supports loopback, this will work- if it doesn't support loopback it won't work. Even if it does work, you are forcing your client-server traffic to be processed (NAT) by the router, incredibly inneficient (although a simple config for basic requirements). If you're moving big files with AFP, you don't want all traffic to go from client-router(NAT)-server-router(NAT)client. You can get around this by connecting using .local or IP addresses. So this all depends on your config, requirements, habits of the users, etc.

  • Handling anything gets extremely slow after some time

I'm having a strange issue with CS5. Without any apparent reason, the file I am editting becomes very slow with simple actions. For example, moving a (random) object around. Using the arrow keys, it takes every move about a second to complete... there is a lot of weirdness surrounding this, so i'll try to give as much input as I can.
    - before this issue comes up, everything is working fine
    - there is only line art in the file, simple line art for that matter (squares, straight lines, text).
    - if this happens, and i copy paste everyting in a new file, it is working fine again for a random amount of time, until it gets stuck in slow mode again
    - Outline mode, has no effect on the delay
    - Turned off all effects (only drop shadows) and had no effect
    - The file size is around 2,5MB
    - Tried tweaking all the settings i could think off (resolution, anti-aliasing, etc), which had no effect.
    - Turning off thumbnails in layers has no effect
    - sometimes, re-opening the file helps, sometimes it doesn't...
    - If the problem is "on", whenever i nudge an object, my cpu shoots to 100%.
    - I'm running on a 2010 Macbook Pro (4gb ram), so that shouldn't be a problem (I think), it works fine sometimes as well.
    - Tried running OSX in 64 bit, didn't make a difference.
    - Tried adjusting the "Document Raster Effects Settings". 9 out of 10 times adjusting that makes Illustrator crash (hard), but after getting it adjusted it had no effect.
    - Everything has "align to pixel" on, but turning it off has no effect on the delay.
I this just one of the famous Adobe software annoyances I will have to live with? Or does anybody know a cause of this that I might be able to fix?
    Cheers and thanks in advance.
    Ben

Tnx for the input Mike, the graphic styles, brushes and symbols palettes are filled with the default fresh-install items. So very few in all of them (only swatches has more than 10 items at first glance). All other programs run fine, it's just Illustrator. The cpu spike to 100% of Illustrator (it's process) only happens on a "nudge" action. After that, it goes back to normal. I have no other heavy programs running. I ran the disk utility and repaired some permission errors (according to the log), there were no other errors there.
I am currently working in "normal" mode (the issue is currently gone because i re-opened it a couple of times), but if I happen to go into "slow" mode again, I'll recheck your list just in case.
