Mac OS X (10.4) Clone To New Hard Drive - Not Booting

Hello folks,
I have recently bought an iMac G3 Snow, w/ 500MHz processor. This things works well with Tiger installed, but has quite a noisy hard drive. I wish to replace the hard drive with a newer, faster, and quieter 30GB hard drive that I happen to have spare.
I had booted the iMac in "Target Disk Mode", fired up my Macbook Pro, and connected the two computers via Firewire. I had then made a successful image of the iMac's HDD using Disk Utility. I then removed and replaced the hard drive in the iMac, and proceeded to restore the image to the new hard drive using Disk Utility again, also via Target Disk Mode.
Upon successfully restoring the image, I rebooted the iMac, only to find that the iMac cannot find the appropriate boot files. (ie, Question-mark w/ Finder folder logo error).
Any help to fix this would be muchly appreciated.

Hi Jeff - many thanks for your help. Unfortunately, I am still unable to boot from a clone made with SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner.
I'm starting to focus my troubleshooting toward the iMac, or hard drive itself. These are my thoughts, if anyone could suggest any other places to poke around for inquiry.
- the Maxtor 30GB replacement hard drive is being recognised successfully in Target Disk Mode by my Macbook Pro. This shows that the hard drive works correctly, and that the iMac can access all of the data on the hard drive. The hard drive is set to "Master".
- when creating clone in either SuperDuper, or Carbon Copy Cloner, the clone processes report that the final clone on the new hard drive will be 'bootable'. This is reiterated when I look for the 'information' on the one partition in Disk Utility.
I have also reset the PRAM and NVRAM and the Open Firmware, to no avail of the hard drive booting into Mac OS X.
I have looked into my Open Firmware settings to see whether there may be a setting to specifically direct the Mac's bootloader toward the "BootX" file on the hard drive. When querying the 'boot-device', the Open Firmware's response is "hd:,\\:tbxi" - is this the correct function to have?
When I purchased the iMac, the Tiger 10.4 PPC DVD/CDs were not included with the purchase. I'm trying my best to fix the problem without the discs if at all possible.
Any suggestions as to where I can go to help my mac boot into Mac OS X again would be muchly appreciated. Thanks.

Ive just purchased and installed a new blank hard drive, using "Carbon Copy Cloner" ive cloned the original hard drive to the blank new hard drive. Once the clone is complete i cannot boot up from my new internal hard drive. When i startup i get a finder icon with a question mark inside, I can boot from my old external hard drive but i want to wipe this and have everything running from my new internal HD as it has a much greater capacity.
Can anyone help with this???

Welcome to the Apple disucssions.
For Cabon Copy Cloner to create a bootable drive, the following conditions have to be met:
1. The target volume cannot be a disk image -- you cannot boot your Macintosh from a disk image.
2. The source and target volumes must be local volumes -- CCC cannot determine the bootability of a remote volume.
3. If the Macintosh is a PowerPC Macintosh, the target device must be an internal volume or on a Firewire hard drive.
4. The files and folders required by Mac OS X must be present on the source volume. These include: /Library, /System, /bin, /etc, /mach_kernel, /private, /sbin, /tmp, /usr, and /var.
5. The files and folders that are required by Mac OS X must be selected to be copied to the target volume (applicable only to the "Incremental backup of selected items" cloning method).
6. If the Macintosh is a PowerPC Macintosh, the hard drive on which the target resides must be partitioned using the Apple Partition Map.

New hard drive not booting osx from external

Hi guys, I currently installed a new hard drive into my macbook, and I tried holding down the alt//option key to try and boot osx from my external hard drive ((Connected through USB)) but nothing happens. My mouse cursor appears, but nothing shows up. I tried 5 minutes ago to make sure that I was actually able to boot to my external drive from my old hard drive, and it worked perfectly. But nothing shows up on this end. Any help or suggestions?

Tutorial: Clone/Installing new hard drive (hdd) & install windows(FAT NTFS)

This is a tutorial for people looking to clone their internal hard drive and install it into their macbook (usually because you've upgraded to a larger hdd). I have also included an installation of windows vis a vis boot camp style. Ive been battling this for the past 3 days, so hopefully this tutorial will answer some questions and save you some time.
1. Firstly get your external drive (clone) ready. Go to applications---->utilities---->disk utility. Click on your external drive and then partition it. I used 2 partitions, one for mac (200 GB) and one for windows (40 GB). For now partition in GUID partition format (found in options). This is important. You can check whether it actually as in GUID at the end of the format when you click on the drive and on the bottom part of the screen it will give you all the drive information. (NOTE: if you have a standard windows installation you can have 1 partition at this stage and then later let boot camp create a partition for you. Boot camp will only format in FAT, so all windows using NTFS are out of luck).
2. if you ve decided to go for 2 partitions, format the windows partition into FAT or NTFS. If you are using windows 7 (which by the way, is a pretty good effort by microsoft and WAS free to download on beta), anyways if your using a windows which requires NTFS obviously format so. WINXP runs just fine on FAT and is probably the easier option. (This is a note for those formatting on NTFS; sometimes OSX with have some error in formatting NTFS at this stage, God knows why, dont download NTFS 3G or Disk Warrior, nothing will fix it. Just leave it for now and when your finished cloning and ready to install windows, use the XP CD to boot from and then you will be presented with the option of formatting in NTFS. I did this then exited before the actual XP install to get my windows 7 in there. (NOTE: you cannot clone windows installations, ntfs partitions, etc)
3. With your external drive ready. Download carbon copy cloner or super duper. I used super duper. So just choose your internal drive and 'backup all files' to your external. This disk will be bootable. It will not be necessary to use a third hdd to restore to. infact i tried both ways of doing it and both worked just as well as each other. No need for a third drive as some have suggested.
4. Once finished, check out the clone. Restart, just when the mac is starting HOLD down the 'option' key....you will be presented with a list of devices to boot from, choose your external (usb or firewire------> note usb only works for INTEL macs, if your not sure if you have an intel mac. In OSX click on the small black apple on the upper left hand corner of the screen and 'about this mac'....it should say whether its intel or not. Also if your pressing option and you get a padlock wanting a password (like i did), but you dont know the password. Dont worry. Get your OSX installation discs, reboot from those (it will do so automatically). Go to Utilities drop down menu and choose reset firmware password. The other 'reset password' resets the password which would come right before entering into OSX at startup.
5. Anyways, assuming your all good booting from your external drive, check out drive, whether everything is where it should be. if it check outs your good to go.
6. Disassemble macbook to install your clone (not that difficult, get a good youtube tutorial for this like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXqJn465lxs and be careful with disengaging your keyboard cable, otherwise its fairly straight forward. I did this about 6 times trying to get everything right and experimenting with installations. So im pretty blase about it
7. Start up your machine hold OPTION at startup, choose your now internal hdd. Your in. (NOTE: if you reset your firmware password the first time, you will have to do this again with your OSX discs)
8. If you have a standard windows installation you can download boot camp assistant or alternatively it will already be in applications---->utilities---> boot camp assistant. Boot camp will create you a partition and then ask you to put in the windows installation disc, is fairly automated.
9. If you decide to do it manually because you have 2 partitions already. Just restart with your windows cd in there and wait for it to boot, if it doesnt, restart, hold option key. Then just go through the usual windows installation, choose the partition with FAT or NTFS.
10. After all this you will have a working copy of OSX and Windows. I use VMWARE to use windows inside OSX, like a virtual drive. VMWARE has a more straight forward installation then Parallels Desktop (which is apparently faster).... but choose whatever works for you. To look at OSX files through Windows install MACDRIVE and you will be able to view and alter all files as you see fit.
Hopefully this tutorial was of some help. I don t generally read any mac forums so i cant really reply to any questions. I just wanted to post my experience so if someone else out there is searching for answers like i was, then these words will be guide and save you time trawling through numberless webpages......Good luck.

I would approach the situation as follows;
install Acronis, if your new HDD is from Seagate or Western Digital I believe you can download this free from their support sites.
create an Acronis Rescue Disc and when it's created uninstall Acronis as you don't need it any more.
attach external HDD and ODD and boot from the Acronis Rescue Disc
create an image of the current main HDD to the external HDD
remove current HDD from your X61 and insert the new HDD in it's place - this is very important.
boot from Acronis Rescue Disc and recover the image you created to it.
Enjoy your new hard drive.
Alternatively, if you can put your original HDD in the external HDD caddy (connectors are the same) or purchase a 2.5" caddy, you could clone after creating the Acronis Rescue Disc, step by step instructions for cloning can be found here.

New Hard Drive Not Showing Up in Disk Utilities

Hi all,
So a few days ago my hard drive failed on me completely. And I didn't back up before that.
Yeah.
I bought a WD Scorpio Blue SATA 320 GB / 8 MB Cache / 5400 RPM internal hard drive and installed it myself in my 13" MacBook Pro (2009 I think). Model number of the HD is WDBABC3200ANC-NRSN.
After installing the hard drive, I turned on the laptop and put my Snow Leopard install disc into the computer. It took me to the Mac OS X installer and I went into Utilities / Disk Utilities. Here, however, my new hard drive isn't showing up.
What do I need to do to make this laptop recognize it has a new hard drive? I'm pretty sure I installed the hard drive correctly. Any thoughts?

make sure it is selected as the startup disc. system preferences>startup disc> make sure new hdd is the default startup disc.

I just installed a 500G hard drive and went to install OS X leopard and the new drive isn't showing up in the destination pane. Do I have to format it first? It shows up under disc utilities. If I have to format it what format should I use there are a few listed (journaled, etc)

I have had a new hard drive installed. When I go to Disk Utilities and click on Info it shows that it the following:
Connection Bus: Serial ATA
Connection ID: Device 0
Partion Type: ApplePartionScheme
Total Capcity: 298.1 GB
Format: Mac OS Extended (journaled)
However, the drive does not show up to install the OS to. Where do I go from here?

New hard drive not working

I just bought a new hard drive to replace my exhausted 12G HD in my G3 iMac DV graphite. I started up using the original OS 9 disc and the HD was not recognized. I loaded OS9 onto the new HD via fire wire from my G5 successfully, still no joy. So here's the specs: Maxtor Ultra Series 100GB, 7200 rpm, Ultra ATA/133. I got it pretty cheap at Staples. The package info seemed to indicate this would work. If not compatible I guess I can add it to my G5. Thanks in advance. If this is the wrong drive....can I get the specs for what type of HD I should be looking for? Thanks.

Do the following:
1, Boot from your OS X Installer Disk. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
You should now be able to install OS X.

Hello all -
I've spent the better part of the last hour searching this forum, and haven't been able to find a solution, so I hope you folks can help me out...
After five years of dutiful, uninterrupted service, the original internal hard drive on my G4 QuickSilver 867 finally went kaput. Everything I really need is backed up offsite, so when the Apple Store Genius told me I'd need to start over with a new hard drive, I wasn't really upset. The Genius informed me that they'd be happy to replace my hard drive and get me up and running again for nearly $300, but then leaned over the counter and said that to save a ton of money, I should really just run out to Best Buy, pick up a new ATA hard drive and pop it in there myself. I happily followed his instructions.
Now I have a new Samsung 80GB ATA hard drive in my machine (set to Master and properly connected), but when I boot to my OSX install DVD, the computer evidently cannot see the new Samsung drive. When it asks for a destination volume on which to install the OS, there are no options available to select.
In searching the forum, it seems like everyone with a similar problem was trying to 'add' a drive, so I'm not sure the other information applies to me (since I have no OS installed, I can't use Disk Utility). Please note that I'm starting from scratch here... Just one hard drive in the machine, straight out of the box.
If there's something really simple that I've failed to do, please forgive this novice and lend a hand! Thanks in advance for your help. It is very much appreciated.

Thanks for the input, Rodney! Unfortunately, I can't seem to figure out how to reformat it. Here's exactly how far I get...
1.) Boot up the computer to the OS Install DVD.
2.) Installer asks me what I wish my primary language to be. I select English and hit Continue.
3.) Installer shows OS description and tells me to hit Continue if I want to install. I click Continue.
4.) The license agreement comes up and I hit Continue and then Agree to move forward.
5.) I am asked to select a destination volume for the OSX installation. There are no options to select. The only button I can press is 'Back'. There is an 'Options' button as well, but it is ghosted.
Any ideas?

New hard drive not appearing in iTunes, can't burn discs

Just got a new hard drive. iTunes does not see either of my Superdrives. Any ideas on how to "connect" iTunes with my drives again, or if that's necessary. I have checked out the Help info in the app and didn't find an answer. Thank you!

What happens when you run the HDD diagnostics test in the BIOS?
It is doubtful the notebook's HDD will boot with W7 already installed on it from another PC unless it is the same model as yours.
Quite often that is what you get when you try booting from a HDD from another PC that already has Windows installed on it -- nothing at all.

New to Mac... I have partitioned my hard drive Dual Boot M.Lion/S. Leopard with 2 OS partitions and a Media Partition. How do I direct my file storage to the Media Partition? Can I put a "Media" folder on both OS Desktops that will allow me to drag n drop

Why not? Make a folder in your media partition and put an alias folder (shortcut) on the desktop of each partition/ OS. You can right click on the folder in the media partition and click on "make alias".
If you want to direct your iTunes media to point to the media partition, google "move iTunes library to external disk" and follow the steps; the instructions should be the same for a seperate partition as it is for an external drive.

Mac Pro: How do I format a new hard drive?

Hello,
About to open and install a new Samsung 3.5" SATA internal hard drive into slot 2. This drive will only be used for audio and I was told to format the drive in Mac OS Extended with journaling disabled and a single partition.
I am not quite sure how to do this, and since I am already suffering from the frequent computer crashing firewire debacle, I want to make sure that I get this right.
So, any advice before I start this next project would be extremely helpful. I simply can not afford any more problems.

Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended. Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

Transferring Mac OS X 10.6 Mail to New Hard Drive

I've put a new 500gb drive in a macbookpro, done a clean install of Snow Leopard. What's the best way of importing my old mail & settings (gmail/yahoo pop) from my old drive (now in an external enclosure).

Go to your Home folder on the old drive, and in its Library, copy both the Mail folder and the com.apple.mail.plist file from the Preferences folder in the same Library. Transplant those to the analogous location in the new Home folder, replacing any that you may have caused to be created there.
When you launch Mail, it will find both sets of data, and you will pick up where you left off with the old drive. You can also do the same with the Address Book -- Home/Library/Application Support/Addressbook folder.

Power Mac G5 wont install 10.5 on new hard drive

I recently got a Pmac g5 from my uncle. His hard drive died and he had no further use for it. I bought a new drive and have a disk for Leopard, but when I try to load from the disk it doesnt seem to work. it just defaults back to the ? folder. The disk works because it loads fine on my G3 iMac, and I dont know how to check to see if the hard drive is recognized (250 GB Maxor formatted for this computer). I've reset PRAM and all that stuff, but with no luck. Any help as to why it wont work?

Well Option Boot won't see the Hard Drive ubtil we fornat it HFS+, but whyit isn't seeing the Install Disc is our problem.
Does the G3 iMac haveFirewire?
If so wee could use the G3's Optical drive with the G3 in Target Mode, & Option Boot the G5.
