So after I buy the DVD version of Tiger, how do I obtain the CD version?
I'll be upgrading my parents' slot loading CRT iMac (summer 2001 model).
First I'll upgrade RAM to 1 Gbyte, and do the 4.1.9 firmware upgrade.

The link to the media exchange form has been removed from the Tiger product page. The last version of it that I came across had a 3-31-07 expiration date, but that may have been extended again. I'd suggest calling 1-800-MY-APPLE, to confirm whether Tiger CDs are still available. If you can't get them anymore, you should consider installing Panther on that vintage iMac. You can still find new Panther (retail version) installer CD sets at eBay.

When I purchased Mac Tiger 4.0, I was told that it was compatible with my computer. Nothing was said about needing a DVD drive. I found that I cannot use a third party DVD drive to install, I don't have another computer to use TDM, and Apple will no longer exchanse DVDs for CDs even though they still sell this software to unsuspecting customers. I feel that Apple is putting thousands of its customers through **** because we can't purchase new computers every couple of years. The sites that do sell these cds, which seel for almost twice the amount of the original DVDs, are also out of stock. Are there any Mac OS 4.0 Tiger installer CDs around? I feel that I have been ripped off and am now stuck with a worthless box of software unless I am force to purchase a new computer. Why is Apple turning its back on so many customers?

A simple visit to http://www.apple.com/macosx/techspecs/ would have revealed a DVD was necessary at the time you purchased 10.4. Tech Specs were linked to the Tiger page. You can verify for yourself on http://www.archive.org/ In addition, the DVD requirement was right on the retail box's side. Also most websites that sold Tiger also listed the DVD requirement on their system requirements section of the website. I suggest if you did not see that requirement when you purchased the operating system to take it up with the place you purchased the operating system for not being up front with well known requirements on their communication page to their customers. They may or may not accept your complaint given that it has taken you 7 months to realize this issue. In the future it is always wise to take up an issue within two weeks of purchase with most retail stores. I'm sorry to hear it has taken you this long, but unfortunately there was ample documentation which apparently you didn't know how to find until it was too late.
As for your LaCie not being able to boot the DVD, this is a problem of firmware. Many LaCie's don't have the correct firmware to boot off DVD. Sell your LaCie, and get an http://www.macsales.com/ Firewire DVD drive which can boot the Tiger DVD if http://www.lacie.com/ 's Support doesn't have the correct firmware to install your operating system.
This is a user to user board, so your complaint to Apple here would fall mostly on deaf ears. Call Apple Customer Relations at AppleCare here if it was purchased from Apple directly:

Using OS X Install CDs/DVDs On Multiple Macs
The question of using system/software install CDs/DVDs on more than one machine is frequently asked.
So, FYI:
System software installation CDs/DVDs, that come with a particular Mac model, are hardware specific to that model, and not intended to be used on other Mac models. For instance, the CDs/DVDs that are shipped with an iMac are not to be used on an iBook or eMac.
And the "Tiger" DVDs that are shipped with any new Mac, also are not to be used on other Mac models.
If such an installation were possible, or somehow accomplished successfully, that action would constitute a violation of your license agreement, which limits installation to a single computer.
The "Single User Software License Agreement" can be found here Software License Agreement.
Similarly, any "Upgrade" CDs/DVDs for a particular Mac OS will ONLY work for that Mac & system. For example, if a new Mac that shipped with Jaguar/Panther, was purchased shortly before the release of Panther/Tiger, the user may have purchased "Upgrade" CDs/DVDs, for a lesser price than the full install set. These CDs/DVDs do not contain all of the necessary components for an independent installation of Panther or Tiger.
The license agreement applies to single user retail versions of system software. The "Panther" or "Tiger" boxed set, for example.

In order to install Lion you have to have Snow Leopard and then update to 10.6.8:

Personally I suggest that you stop at Snow Leopard. It still is the most efficient OS that Apple has devised and it still works great. Go to the Lions only if there are feature that you really need. There may be a price to pay in slower performance though.

Problem making disk image of Panther install cds...

Hi everyone!
I want to make a disk image of my Panther retail install cds...just to have a backup in case I lose my cds or something. The problem is on disk 2 I keep getting an input/output error using Disk Utility. I tried to use SuperDuper and I got the same and the log shows this:

Funny thing is I had problems installing my Panther recently and I had to disable the German package because of errors during install. Does this make sense at all and can anyone help me to make a disk image of my Panther cds?

Yes that might be possible? That's one of the reasons I wanted to make a disk image in case my cds would be damaged or something. It makes sense what you say because as I mentioned when I did my install I had a hang up with the German pkg and I just skipped over it...good thing I'm not German huh?
If I clean it up and everything and it's still the same problem what are my options? I don't see a way to de-select this package when making the disk image?

I tried my black OS X 10.4.6 CDs on a G4 yesterday specifically to see if an install from disk 1 only is possible. Sadly it is not. It requires about 400 GB from disk 2 no matter how minimal you try to make it. My disk 2 contains the following and the install needs everything except languages:

Those wishing to upgrade to Leopard should be aware that install disks can be expensive unless you contact Apple. Where can I get replacement install Cds of earlier versions?

I've acquired a very cheap old secondhand G4 Imac to use as a photolibrary and large E-photoframe.
Unfortunately the os needs to be reinstalled but the machine cames without any Panther CD's. Where can I get a replacement set of Panther (or perhaps Tiger) CD's without spending a fortune. The machine won't run Leopard so needs an earlier version of osx.
Apple used to have archived versions of it's osses available for download. Do they still do it? Presumably as 10.3 is now pretty old hat it would count as an arcived system...

Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store *but may be available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753)*. For other sources, do a Google search for MA453Z/A (10.4.6), MA190Z/A (10.4.3) and M9639Z/A (10.4) . Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X) and not a model specific version (gray) (See Can I use another Mac's system restore disc on my Mac? ). Expect to pay (possibly a lot) more than the Apple list price of $129.

Possible Alternative if you are currently using Panther 10.3 – Do a Google search for Tiger 10.4 Upgrade DVD . It will upgrade your 10.3 to 10.4, but it doesn’t contain the full retail Tiger installer. Should be cheaper than the retail Tiger install DVD.

Be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings. Also, repair permissions before and after the install.
If you do a Google search for M9227LL/A (Panther 10.3 retail install CDs) or M9228LL/A (Family Pack), you may find a set. The CDs should be black with a white X.

IBook G4 - No install Cds

Hi,
I finally came to apple's forum begging for an answer.
I work in technical support for a company, there a lot of ibooks laying around.
Thing is that one came to me with Ubuntu Linux installed.
I have to install mac os x 10.3 Panther, but noone knows where the cds are, so I downloaded it and tryed to install it.
When it boots the disk a big no sign appears.
Is there any way to install osx panther without the original discs that came with the mac?

You really should also have a set of system discs for future maintenance & troubleshooting purposes, and also if you wish to personalize the Mac, and eliminate any previous problems, by doing an Erase & Install, choosing to zero all data.
AS Kappy posted, Mac OS X Versions 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, and 10.4, are complete system upgrades that must be purchased.
Once an OS has been installed, the point upgrades, such as 10.1.x to 10.1.5 (Final) 10.2.x to 10.2.8 (Final), 10.3.x to 10.3.9 (Final), and 10.4.x to 10.4.9 (Pending), can be downloaded for free.
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Panther, is no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
In addition to AppleRescue, again as Kappy posted, if you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased rather inexpensively, at some other online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
Unless purchased from AppleRescue, the discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, or CPU Drop-in DVD, on them.

Before upgrading to any OS X version, check to see if your Mac needs a Firmware Update.
If one is required, you must start the computer from a Mac OS 8 or Mac OS 9 System Folder on the computer's hard disk, not from a CD, in order to install it.
Once Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version.
If your Mac meets the Tiger System Requirements, you could also consider installing that, and then use the PPC 10.4.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.

Late 2012 Mac mini upgrade ssd - also install parallels 8 and windows 7

Late 2012 Mac mini (16gb memory) SSD install - samsung 840 pro 512 gb. I am looking to install this new SSD as possibly a dual drive setup almong with the stock HDD 500gb in order to: make the system faster (with more storage etc.), possibly use the stock drive as a backup drive and I also want to run parallels 8 with windows 7.
I have ordered the data doubler kit from Owc and am wondering exactly how to setup properly. Can I simply install new drive in the upper bay (and move stock drive to lower bay)? Then migrate the data from the stock drive then after that's complete run the setup for parallels? I am also confused as far as using trim enabler or not? I was also wondering how much space/memory is recommended for windows 7 partition?

NOTE: A small number of 2012 units were shipped with the drive mounted in the upper drive bay rather than the more typical lower bay shown in this video. If you have a 2012 or later model, you will want to determine the configuration of your Mac mini's drives prior to ordering. To do this, open Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app and click on the grey drive icon at the left-edge of the window. If you see "Lower" after the "Connection ID" at the bottom-left corner of the window, you may proceed using the standard installation instructions. If you see "Upper" then you have a special configuration which will need additional components, and you will need to also refer to the Addendum video.

Some users have reported problems with an SSD being the boot drive in the upper bay. They have not reported problems with a HD boot from either bay To avoid the problem I would move the HD (if it is in the lower bay) to the upper bay and install the SSD in the lower bay.
I allocated 64 GB for Win 7 in Parallels abd 4 GB Of 16 installed). You can change them later after you install so it is not that importent what you specify initially.

There is a difference in what Kappy stated and what you stated. A major paid upgrade (v2.x to v3.0), yes, costs money, as it would in any other delivery stream. Updates (v3.0 to v3.1) to a a major version are free.
Most apps sold through the Mac App Store (MAS) are the type that use the simple drag & drop installation. Those are downloaded directly to the designated apps folder and installation is done. Large pro-type apps download an installer to your Apps folder. Those you can install at your leisure. The MAS does not have a lot of apps using this type of installation.
Be sure to always backup your MAS purchases, because there is no guarantee that the app will always be available for download in the future and it is your responsibility to archive copies.

installed new internal disk first with fresh 10.7.3 Lion software. Also upgrade ram to 4GB. Work great, super fast.
BUT.... my WD 1TB firewire400 external disks no longer work with the Lion enabled machine now.
FURTHER... I read somewhere that WD is problematic with Lion but Seagate was not... so I went and bought a new 3TB Seagate GoFlex.
When it didnt work properly either, I patiently searched and found a software/firward upgrade and applied.
I re-partitioned disk to extened/journaled standard, etc.
Then assigned the particition to Time Machine. Drive turned the blue/grey color, so I thought it would work.
But, it has now been in "preparing" mode in Time Machine for HOURS....
What is up Apple? So dissappointed. Ive read these type of problems are notorious with Lion and I wish I never upgraded.
Are you trying to make issues with External disks, to drive people to iCloud? That trick ont work in me. I will not reward bad behaviour Apple.
Please provide a fix... I wasted hours/days screwing around with this, instead of using the Mac for what its intended!

Sounds like either:
A directory problem on your internal HD. Verify your internal HD, and Repair any other volumes being backed-up per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
Something in OSX may be damaged. You've tried the "combo," so a fresh copy of OSX (that won't disturb anything else) would be worth a try (and you don't need a tech for that). See Installing the ''combo'' update and/or Reinstalling OSX.

If all else fails, try this. i used to do it all the time before. might or might not work with the new office.
if you have access to another computer with a cd/dvd rom, copy the entire contents of the cd on a thumb drive.
insert the thumb drive in your MB and do the install from there.
However, if you have the newer version of MS Office, Bandit's suggestion is much better.

I believe these are the wrong system restore discs for your model iMac, assuming your are correct that you have mid 2007 iMac.
These gray colored type restore discs are Mac-machine specific and are the wrong ones for your iMac.
They will not work.
The original OS X restore discs for your model iMac would either install OS X 10.4.11 Tiger or OS X 10.5 Leopard.
You have gray system restore discs for a later model iMac. These will not work with iMac year and model.
Sorry.
You need to purchase a full retail version of OS X 10.6.3 Snow Leopard here instead.

These discs will work with your year and model iMac.
Assuming that your hard drive was installed properly, these white retail OS X install discs should be able to boot, format and install OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard to your 2007 iMac.
