Mac OS X 10.4 on PowerBook G4

I have an PowerBook G4 1.33GHz 12.1inch and i have replaced the hardrive becuase the one inside stopped working. When i boot up the computer it has a file with a question mark in it and flashing with the mac logo. When I hold down Option it comes up with a refresh button and a arrow in it. When I insert the Mac OS X install Disc nothing happens. Even when i have clcik the refresh button and then it will eject the disc from the drive. PLEASE HELP ME! What should I do next ??

You might want to go throught the procedure you followed in replacing the hard drive and make certain the connections are seated well. I know from personal experience that it is easy to not press the tiny ribbons in far enough to assure proper contact. I presume you have the iFixit or another guide that you used to assist in disassembly/assembly.
If not here is a link.

When the Powerbook is woken from sleep mode the airport crashes when using an external display. I have no idea why this is, but it seems from other threads, that the external display and airport are closely tied together, and I have also read that there are others who are experiencing some problems with the Airport. When this happens, I have to hard boot the machine as I can't forcequit or shut down the system from the menubar (this crashes too)
I have the following installed for my airport

I don't think the DVD is damaged since it worked fine on my old G4 desktop.
The reason I'm trying to reinstall OS 10.4 is because I have received the computer from a family member with all his files and data in it. I want to get rid of it all and start from scratch for my personal use - if possible. If not, I could settle for less.
I want to explain few issues if that helps. I first tried installing Mac OS 10.3 to my Powerbook running Mac OS 10.4.3. I put OS 10.3 CD, started computer with C key held down, and all that came up was gray screen with 1 inch black line to the left of the Apple logo, and remained there - never making it to the blue screen. I shut of the computer, took the Mac OS 10.3 out of the Powerbook, restarted without the CD, and the computer was back to the desktop.
Then I tried installing 10.4, which goes past the gray screen, and gets stuck in the blue screen. I ejected the 10.4 DVD, and computer was back to normal (to the desktop)
It sounds like you inserted the wrong or a damaged DVD and neither the installation nor erasure took place. In that case, let's get started again on the right foot.
Tell me why you want to erase your hard drive? Were you experiencing some technical issue, and if so what? Let's troubleshoot that situation with the least harmful method.

  • Mac Mini s-video vs. PowerBook s-video quality

Is there notable difference between Mac Mini's s-video output (with the DVI to s-video adapter) and PowerBook G4 1.67 s-video output?
I'm asking this because I've found PowerBook s-video output to be quite good. I can easily use my Powerbook on a CRT 28" WS TV. If Mac Mini delivers same quality, I'm quite sure I will get one to replace DVD, CD and digi-tv on the living room.
This subject briefly surfaced on another thread, but I decided to ask it more visibly.

    Yep,
I have the powerbook 1.67 and a mac mini core duo, the powerbook handles s-video really well in terms of resolutions however the mini fails, it cannot manage anamorphic displays which are rubbish if youve got a widescreen tv. However in terms of quality they are both great even though the powerbook has 128mb video card the mini easily matches.

  • Switched over to Mac and having MAJOR problems with Powerbook G4

    Hello,
I'n the interest of not having to post many threads and to save bandwidth I will post my problems on one single thread so that you can address each issue.
    1) The adapter cord that plugs in to my Powerbook usually has a bright "yellow" light on the endge of the cord when plugged in. Recently the color changed to bright "orange" should I be concerned and is this a sign of something bad to come?
    2) When I press the power button "sometimes" the screen goes grey. I press the button, hear the chime, screen goes grey with a world logo that keeps flashing at limbo preventing me from getting in to the computer system. Why is this happening and how do I correct it?
    3) Select the Apple Icon on the top and go to Mac OSx software, IE Explorer loads and then FREEZES evertything on the system. It's as though it's crashing from the onset.
    4) At any given time while I'm searching through files or surfing the net a ridiculous littl ball appears in the shape of a rainbow that essentially locks my ENTIRE SYSTEM. I cannot click on any Icon or do much of anything. Forced to sit and helplessly look at this stupid object with no directive as to what to do. I can't even shut down my system in safe mode because it won't let me access the Apple Icon on the top menu. At last resort I have to HOLD DOWN THE POWER BUTTON for 10 seconds just to shut it down.
    5) How can you retrieve files deleted by accident or do a system restore like you can in Windows? No disks came with my computer so I'm hoping that there is a button to click that can reverse actions and bring back system to an earlier time. I'm sure that Apple must have thought about this as people are going to make many mistakes and will need immediate and non complex recourse in restoring files and the system in general. I changed Admin privilidges to myself and deleted the former Admin of my system, thinking that it would only delete the "name" but instead I suspect that the system deleted 5GB of files that the former Admin installed? Not sure. I have nothing in my trash can and the deleted files under former Admin are in the form of an "image" on my hard disk. I tried to open the deleted file by clicking on the Icon and it's telling me "DISK IMAGE FAILED TO MOUNT no mountable file system. This is very frustrating as I need to see what files have been deleted and restore those that I need. I have OFFICE MAC X suite that now I can't locate and yesterday I downloaded the Opera browser and turned on the Mac this morning only to find that it to is gone.
Now granted Windows is a headache in itself but I never imagined that I would be going through all this madness with a Mac. Everyone spoke so highly of them and I'm finding out different from first hand experience. Hopefully, you can help me resolve the above issues as I'm feeling very frustrated with this computer.

    Hi again,
You definitely need to purchase some replacement disks for your computer. Just from hard shutdowns via the powerbutton can do system file damage and you need to Repair Dick using the install disk.
From your reply I would suggest obtaining a good Mac OSX users book such a one of the David Pogue books etc. You can find any number of them online for your OS. The learning of the Mac OS can be somewhat confusing for a switcher from PC and Microsoft OS's. I was somewhat lucky in that when I first started using computers I learned on a Mac so I never had any relearning curve to deal with. I think you will find if you stick with your Mac and OSX that you will learn to love it compared to PC's.
I can assure you that Apple did not drop the ball when it came to the PowerBooks as evident by it being one of the most succesful of all Mac notebook computers.....there are many many happy users still of PowerBooks. There is a specific forum here in Discussions for Powerbook computers that may help you with certain issues.
re: "I went ahead and downloaded my favorite browser Opera for the second time, since it disappeared yesterday after I restarted my machine. Hopefully, I will find it on the Doc the next time I start my system."
Once you download an app to your Mac you will need to place it in your HD/Applications folder. From there you can simply drag it's alias to the Dock or click open the app and then when the icon appears in the Dock click on its icon in the Dock once and hold and from its pop up contextual menu select "Keep In Dock". Applications do not automatically stay in the Dock.
I am not sure I follow your description of the problem of the lost 5GB of files that were on some sort of Disk Image and how you are trying to retrieve them for me to be able to help. If you have deleted the files they are gone on your computer and you will need to use a third party software to recover them (DataRescue is one such utility but these are expensive softwares and can have varying results with file recovery). If you know the name of any of the missing files you can do a search using the finders search field (double click on your HD icon and then use its search field upper right) to make sure that the files are indeed not on your HD anymore.
I also wanted to suggest when using the command +option + escape key combination to force quit a process sometimes may take a couple or a few tries to get it to work sometimes (at least that has been my experience). Did you read through Dr. Smoke's FAQ concerning the SBBOD?
In the end you will need to learn common system maintenance for your OS to function properly such as Repairing Permissions via Disk Utility and running the cron maintenance (daily, weekly and monthly) tasks which can be done manually or by downloading a third party freeware utility such as MacJanitor to help do this easily. One of the biggest reasons to have your install disks is this is how you will need to repair the disk for system corruption among other problems. This can only be done with OS 10.3.9 by using the install disk and booting to its DiskUtility.
I hope these tips help a little more and do post back with further questions,

  • Can't Install Mac OS 10.4 in Apple PowerBook G4 Titanium

    Hello!
I have an Apple PowerBook G4 Titanium (400Mhz). My system crash when I tried to enter and hang up in the Apple logo. I used Diskwarrior and TechTool Pro to identify the problem, but there;s no error. I inserted the 10.4 installer and format the had disk. When I tried to install Mac OS 10.4, I receive the following error:
"Essentials Installation. An error ocurred, try again"
This appears a few seconds and the screen goes blue forever. I checked the surface hard disk with TechTool Pro again and the HD seems to be OK.
Anyone can help me to know why when I tried to install 10.4, the installation hang up in the Essentials part?.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello and Thanks for answer:
Yes, I have the Retail Tiger Installer disk. The problem is WHEN the installation is taking part. When a installer disk don't work with the computer, the message "This software can't be installed in this computer" and the SHUTDOWN or RESTART button appears.
In this case, all work OK until the part INSTALLING ESSENCIALS when the screen goes blue. Now, I install Mac OS 10.3 and all the installation go OK. Upgrade via Software Update to 10.3.9 and update again via Installer CD 10.4 and all works OK. Now i'm upgrading to 10.4.11 using again Software Update. The problem is WHEN i try to install from the Apple Mac OS 10.4 Retail direct to the PowerBook G4. I tried zap the PRAM and the problem persist. NOTE: When I purchase the 10.4 DVD I make an security copy. I use the security copy and the error show up....then I use the original DVD suspicious an damage in the backup disk, but the original make the same error.

  • Mac os 9 CD (french) for powerbook

    Hi.
I would like to know if i can order a os 9 CD in french for my powerbook g4 12 inches.
There was no os 9 CD include with the computer, and I really need it to run my old bill software.
Can we order it at Apple Store? I can't find it.
    Thanks.
    Jielle

Hi, jielle. The reason no OS 9 CD was included with your Powerbook is that it would be completely useless to you. An OS 9 installer disk will only work on a computer that can start up in OS 9. Yours can't. However, one of the Install or Restore disks that was shipped with your Powerbook contains an OS 9 installer that will provide for Classic operation within OS X. (You'll have to figure out which one.) If your bill software is compatible with Classic mode, running that installer will enable you to use it. If the software can't run in Classic mode, you won't be able to use it at all on the Powerbook.

  • Mac os9.2.2 on a powerbook G4 667mhz (older model)

I have an older powerbook G4,i always had os9 on it and recently i decided to install the osx 10.1 that came with the machine. It installed fine, and i updated it to 10.1.5.I still have os9 on the machine,i just installed osx on a seperate partition. Then i realized i need atleast 10.2,to use logic pro 6.So i thought it would be easy to just erase the osx i installed.I dragged everything that was osx to the trash. Then i shut the computer down and turned it back on and a picture of a broken folder appeared on my screen.I zapped the ram holding down option apple,r and p and it started up in os9 fine.I ran norton disk doctor to check for any problems and there were tons of problems. So i decided to erase the two partitions other then the hard drive.I have no problems now. There was a message that came up in norton saying there is no blessed folder?I dont know what that means,i dont know what to do.Also when i erased the other two drives i forgot that there were things in the partition,so it erased them. What should i do at this point, install everything i had back to the G4,or do i have to do something about this blessed folder thing?I should have left well enough alone it was running fine for years.I thought it would be better to go to osx,so if in the future i go on the road i could record some ideas and then easily transfer them to my powermac G5.

    Hi d rock;
Norton is not compatable with OS X. It is known to cause more problems then solve them. It is also extremely dangerous to run Norton from OS 9 with OS X files on your system. Norton is to dumb to recognize them and will attempt to fix them for you making them totally unusable.

  • Pismo (powerbook g3 with firewire) upgrade to mac osx 10.4.9

After having this Powerbook G3 Pismo (400 MHz, 2 firewire and 2 USB ports) I decided to upgrade from 10.3 up to 10.4.9 (if doable).
Since this Powerbook G3 had a 5.59 GB hard drive (which had 12% free space) and 512MB RAM I could tell there were many things that had to be done but I'd try them in steps first.
I ordered additional RAM (2 512MB cards from www.powerbookmedic.com) for $189.90 ($94.95 each 512MB card). The idea would be replacing the two 256MB cards. The cards arrived 3 days later and I had no trouble replacing the top 256MB card (thus going from 512MB to 768MB) but the lower card was going to be a bit of trouble.
I noticed a performance change right away with activity monitor (CPU usage, system memory, etc) and decided it would be worth it to continue.
Circuit City in Deerfield Beach, Florida is an authorized Apple service center so a trip to them was next. I explained that I wanted the hard drive replaced (5.56 GB) with a 60 GB one ($80 for the hard drive), and install the 512MB card that I brought with me ($30 labor). Paid for all of items ($80 for hard drive plus $30 for labor) and went home.
A few hours later Circuit City called up and said I could pick up the Powerbook on Sunday morning after 11:00. Wow!
Picked it up and tested a few items by doing a software update (it now had 10.3 loaded on to the 60 GB drive). I used Circuit City's wireless connection there at the service counter. All the updates came up fine (glad they did not charge me for bandwidth).
Off to home and where I still had my Mac OS X 10.4 DVD from my MacBoook Pro 17". Put in the Mac OS X 10.4 DVD and kept my fingers crossed. It worked, took about 45 minutes all said and down.
Under system preferences made sure that synching thru .Mac was enabled so now my Powerbook G3 has all the addressbook, bookmarks, iCal, etc of my Macbook Pro.
Not a lot of dollars ($300) to get a 7 year old computer (February 2000 when purchased) to year 2007.
Can't say it would work the same if I had a lombard or wallstreet version but it certainly did work out well for pismo (400 MHz, 2 firewire and 2 usb ports). It makes me think how advanced this powerbook g3 was back in early 2000.

    Hi sanchezpaulk!

I'm very surprised that you were able to use a Model Specific install disc, for an Intel Mac, to install a functioning system on a PPC Mac.

  • Problem installing Mac 10.4 on Powerbook G4 running Mac Os 10.4.3

    Greetings everyone!
I'm having hard time. I have Powerbook G4 1.67GHZ/512MB/15 inch display now running Mac OS 10.4.3. Well, I'm trying to reinstall Mac OS 10.4 by doing clean installation - that is by wiping out all the old files. Eachtime I put Mac OS 10.4 DVD and click on "Install Mac OS X" icon, a Mac OS message "click" on "Restart" button pops up. After clicking "Restart" button, normally the computer restarts, the gray screen appears with that little wheel, it then goes to the blue screen and thats all I see. Just blue screen. Nothing happens. Then I shut down the computer and restart it again while Ejecting the Mac OS 10.4 DVD out of the Computer, and then it starts without any problem and comes back to its original state.
Can you please help me. Thanks.

  • Change MAC Address of Powerbook NIC

I've got an interesting request, just wondering if anyone here would beable to help. I'm a tech support rep for a high speed ISP in Canada. We have a customer with a Powerbook G4 and for some crazy reason it's NIC has the same MAC address as someone else with in the network... causing her to get kicked off when he does a dhcp renew, and him kicked off when she does a dhcp renew. (our dhcp assigns ip's based on MAC addresses) we are unable to contact the other party. does any one know a way to change the MAC Address of a NIC in Mac 10.3.9 on a powerbook?
I've never had to look in to it with my powerbook... and our other 2 mac guys (and a few other unix minded guys) are unable to find a way to do what we need.

    DjFIL,
    Have a look here.
I always thought MAC-addresses were unique...

  • Tiger, Panther, powerbook, mac mini & iPod problem...

Is it possible to connect my Powerbook (running on 10.3.9) to my Mac Mini (10.4.1), so they can swap files and/or connect to the internet?
    Here's the story:
I just bought a new ipod classic.
It only runs on my mac mini... however my mac mini isn't connected to the internet.
(not wireless and only hard line is already taken)
My laptop is wireless and has internet access.
I want to transfer the pictures and movies I've downloaded on my powerbook to the mac mini, and/or use the powerbook's wireless connection to get online with the mac mini.
But I don't know how or if it's even possible as they're on two different operating systems...
    Does anyone know?
    Thanks!

  • Adobe reader for powerbook mac 10.4.11

I scan the forms i use for work and open them in adobe reader x to add text into them.  The version is not compatible with my mac os x 10.4.11 powerbook.  Is there another adobe reader i can download into my powerbook to do this?  It is so convenient and I can save them into my flash drive to cover my work.  Please help.

    I agree with everyone.
You could easily install OS X 10.5 Leopard or 10.6 Snow Leopard. If you install 4 GBs of RAM, your iMac will see 3 out of 4 GBs of that RAM and should be enough to run either one.
I would opt to install OS 10.6 Snow Leopard because it will be easier to obtain and cheaper to buy.
You can still find OS X 10.5 Leopard, but you'll pay quite a bit more for the retail discs as it's a much older OS X release.
    Good Luck on your decision.

  • Photoshop CS2 won't install on a Powerbook

I've been trying to install PS CS2 all day today and it keeps failing. It'll get through the welcoming and licensing process, but once I authenticate, the installer prepares my volume and then stop immediately after the installer script begins to run. The following message is shown in the installer window:
There were errors installing this software
    Please try installing again.
I checked the installer log and it shows that my volume is not supported:

I tried all the suggestions by Adobe, (removing fonts, reboot with extensions off, disconnected all external devices) and I tried to install this on a iBook and an external volume, but still no luck.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

After talking to Adobe's help desk and trying several things that didn't work, I went back to the install log. Specifically the part that said the target disk wasn't supported. I replaced by internal drive about a year ago, because it was failing, and I formatted the new drive as Case Sensitive Journaled". The Adobe tech said that that wouldn't be the problem, but after a Google search on Case Sensitive Journaled (CSJ), I found several cases of install errors of Adobe Creative Suite when attempting to install on a drive formated as CSJ.
I made a disk copy of my drive using Carbon Copy Cloner then, using Disk Utility from the install disk, reformatted my drive and restored it from the disk image. Rebooted and all worked well, even the install of PSCS2. As a bonus, my copy of Macromedia Contribute now works again. Go figure....
