Mac OS X 10.4.x Locking up desktop items - HELP Please

After I bought and installed Mac OS X 10.4.3, I found that files and folders on my desktop could no longer be deleted or edited. I upgraded to 10.4.6, but that did not fix the problem. I can't rename the files or folders either, though I can copy them to another folder where I can then edit them, but the originals on the desktop are still there in their original form. Can anybody help solve this problem please?

It's possible to run Disk Utility> Repair Permissions from the Installer menu while booted from the Install disc. That, on further thought, is a non-issue with Tiger 10.4; in earlier versions of OS X, running Repair Permissions while booted from a different drive would read the package receipts from the boot drive, not the target drive, potentially messing up permissions.That was I think fixed somewhere late in 10.2.x / early 10.3.x, but it's hard to kill the old habit of checking if Repair Permissions was run while booted from the hard drive or not.
Does Get Info on Desktop Items show your user account as owner with Read/Write permissions?

Mac Pro setup and expansions for Pro Audio applications? Help please...!

Hello everyone.
I want to buy an 8 core mac pro mainly for professional audio applications (Logic, plugins etc) and I have a few questions about upgrading and expansion.
1. Since Logic is a 32 bit application and can only address up to 4GB of RAM, does it worth upgrading to 16GB or should I spend the money upgrading the processors?
2. I've noticed that the Mac Pro has three (excluding the graphics card slot) full length PCI Express slots. Can I install a PCIe card with the shorter connectors? (like this UAD-2 DSP card: http://www.uaudio.com/products/uad/uad2quadomni/index.html)
3. Can the Mac Pro handle hard disk drives with capacity grater than 1TB and HDDs with speeds grater than 7200 rpm internally? If yes, why Apple doesn't have these options within the Apple Store?
I know that my questions may be a bit silly but since this is a big investment I would like to get everything right.
Any help and advice would be very much appreciated...

Free memory doesn't sit idle or go to waste, even Vista/7 will cache 3-4GB to improve system performance. And it isn't released until or unless freed, not fixed or locked and someone else requests more. Mac OS and Mac Pro especially need more memory, and it does show benefits.
A lot depends on how well written software is to take full and proper advantage. And that is ongoing.

Locked out of computer - Help please!

Since trying to update my security I have been locked out of my computer. Message keeps saying incorrect password?

After update Mac Pro boots to grey screen with Kernel Panic. Help please.

It would be great if someone can help me out. Yesterday I did a software update of iTunes and osx (it said to ease update to Lion) and now my Mac Pro tower (MacPro3,1) boots to a grey screen, kernel panic, telling me that I need to power down and restart my machine. I can boot into osx via the safe mode but unfortunately I don't have an install disk to repair the system disk. What are my options?
The machine appears to work in safe mode. I have tried resetting the PRAM. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

There's no point in reinstalling the same driver. It hasn't changed. It's incompatible with the OS update. Contact the device manufacturer to see if there's a driver update. In the meantime, you should physically remove the device so the driver doesn't load. If you uninstall the driver and leave the device installed, that might also cause a panic.

my iphone run out of charge very rapidaly and also turn it self off time to time , and when i set auto lock for example 1,2,5 ect minutes it does not work at all

Do you have a protective case on the iPhone, maybe it's interfering with the auto-lock?
If that isn't it, try restarting or restoring the iPhone.

You can sort this in table BSAD based on Doc type...Idenity whether your document posted via Lockbox program has unique ID...else you can identify from the table BKPF header records <fields TCODE & BLART>.

Locked layer pasting glitch - HELP PLEASE!!

My Adobe Illustrator CS3 appears to have picked up a glitch and I was looking for advice on how to remedy the situation:
When I try to paste on any layer, I get the:
You are attempting to paste or drag into one or more layers that are locked or hidden. Do you want to unlock and show all appropriate layers?
Thing is the layer I am on is not locked.
If I click okay it either opens a locked layer if there is one and pastes there, or creates a new layer - it varies.
I have restarted etc. and tried other documents but it always happens now. Even if I make a new blank document and start a fresh pasting elements.
Do I need to reinstall or is their simpler alternative?

Itunes won't recognize my phone on MAC but it Does on PC !!!! HELP PLEASE

I've been trying to sync my iPhone with my Mac and it doesn't recognize it, it pulled up iPhoto but then I canceled that to see if it would work. I've tried everything possible and I don't know if any of you have ever gone through this. I called 1800-MY-IPHONE and they had to go through product spec. for the same things I've already tried doing. Any ideas.

Assuming you have the phone set to Sync when connected in iTunes...then there seems to be an issue with iTunes you have installed...ensure you have the most recent version. If so and it's still not working then you should try to uninstall iTunes from that MAC machine and then you should remove the Sync settings/data from your MAC library for iSync and SyncServices...Then reinstall iTunes....
I've had this problem before and these steps worked. If you need additional help locating these library entries visit www.iphoneatlas.com and search the archives for sync issues and you will find more detailed instructions.

I just tried installing them. I got the message that "Some updates failed to install" (including for CS5), to quit and try again. I was curious and tried again to print and lo and behold, I could print! I'm still nervous that not everything installed and wonder how to get a complete install.

So I've built this PC:
--> 6330 v5.0 MOBO (flashed with latest bios)
--> AMD xp 2100+
--> 1500megs (3x512mg NCP pc-133)
--> Zalman copper heatsink and fan
--> 400w "enermax" PS
--> G3Ti200 Pro-VT128 (MS-8850)
--> Various hard drives (20-60GB) and CD-ROM drives
If anyone has any suggestions or comments about what bios settings to use, I'm all ears.
My computer persistently hangs in the middle of games and applications (especially games). It just stops responding and keeps the same screen from where it hung up.
It is possible that I have a sound card problem. I'll keep you posted. Writing this thread reminded me that I hadn't tried to remove that yet.

Thanks for all your suggestions, unfortunately none of them solved my problem.
I previously had three hard drives in my system, but I now have only two.(both seagate, 1 20GB and 1 120GB)
I have also tried different ram in my system, and I have reinstalled my OS (Windows XP Pro).
I've updated drivers for damn near every piece of my system (video, sound, chipset, bios, cdrom drive bios), and ensured that my fsb jumper was set correctly.
I also bought a nice new THERMALTAKE xaser 2 case that has a ton of fans and a digital temp. probe, which I pushed up next to the base of my CPU's heatsink. It says that my system is running at 44C and the bios reports 47C. No heat problems, I guess.
I have optimized my bios settings for stability not performance. (no overclocking of anything).
On a whim, I decided to pull my old VOODOO 3 3000 videocard out of retirement and give it a shot at the prize. With an obvious downgrade in graphics quality and speed, it produced the exact same hang as my GeForce3. So, I guess that rules out video card problems.
Is it possible that by setting my FSB to 133 is pushing my AGP bus too far? I don't see a way in the bios to adjust the ratio of FSB freq. to AGP freq.

Yes, that's exactly what happened. If you buy another drive, you could copy from your existing drive to the new and your files will be read/write. The new drive will have to be formatted as an HFS drive (that's the Mac's format). If you need to format it, you use Disk Utility which is in the Utilities folder on your Mac. Be careful with that -- it wipes out whatever is currently on the drive. Make sure you format the right drive.
I keep all my images on an external drive, too. In fact, I have two matching drives and sync them so I always have a backup.

This is a little confusing since you say you have forgotten your password and then the system says you have not entered a password. Even with an Admin account you must have a password to install software.
If you are using Mac OS X 10.7 or above, you can change the admin password by restarting holding the Command and R keys, from the menu bar select Utilities, then Terminal. When the Terminal window opens, at the cursor type exactly:
resetpassword
and press Enter. When the Reset Password window opens, select the internal hard drive, and then the user account. Type a new password twice, leave the Hint blank, and then Save. Accept the next dialog that opens, and at the bottom of the Reset Password window agree to resetting the home directory permissions.
Quit the Reset Password window, go to the apple left side of the menu bar, Restart.
And you have a new password for your account.
