Mac OS X 10.5.8 - 15 minutes to Startup / Boot - error log help?

Found an older thread that advised me to check out Console Messages Error Log, which I did, and I have pasted the notable entries below.

any help on how to fix this 13+ minute gap would be MOST appreciated - thanks!

Roam has made a good catch.
It looks like the long lag begins from Software Update. (Booting in Verbose mode or looking in system.log might give more clues as to what's going on.) Is Sys Prefs>Software Update set to automatically check for, or download, updates (daily?) If it is, it may, for some reason, be getting hung up there. Uncheck that preference and see what the boot time looks like.
I would create another admin account (I always have one set up for testing purposes) and see if the boot up is the same.
You may have a problem with Software Update
Delete the contents (not the enclosing folder) of this folder
/Users/yourusername/Library/Caches/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate
And move this file to the Desktop:
/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
(there may be several more nearby titled "by host," with a long string of numbers; get those, as well.)
They are both in your Home Folder Library.
Then restart.

I would like to have your kind support..Bootcamp windows7 freezing on start up and taking around 40 minutes to load. Mac mountain lion also taking around 5 minutes to load on start up.

My first step would be to get rid of "Norton protection". Boot from your OS 10.6 disc, navigate through your hard drivve and trash anything that is Norton. Empty the trash.
Next, run Disk Utility and ask it to repair the hard drive.

  • Installed new Ram & 10 minutes after startup the computer keeps freezing.

I have mac book pro from 2006 (1.83ghz)  I recently installed 2 new 1G ram chips from crucial for a total ram of 2G. I am running osx 10.6. and 10 minutes after startup the computer keeps freezing.  Could it be that 10.6 is too much for the processor?

10.6 is not "too much for" your MBP. You may have gotten a faulty RAM module — it happens.
Start your machine up while holding down the D key, and when Apple Hardware Test appears, select the Extended Test. Run the extended test at least once all the way through, if you can, and post back with the exact text of any error message it reports.
If the test can't be completed, you definitely have a hardware problem, and the first suspect is the new RAM. In that case, reinstall the RAM that originally came in your machine and run the extended test again. If it is completed without errors this time, the Crucial RAM is clearly at fault and should be exchanged.

  • MacBook shuts down about one minute after startup chime

I have an older (2007?) Macbook, and I think it is running OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.3).  I can't verify this because it won't boot up.  It does the same thing whether on battery or ac power: startup chime, grey screen with apple logo, twirling spokes, and grey bar filling in.  Then, exactly one minute and 38 seconds after the chime, it goes black (keyboard and everything).
I have tried unplugging and waiting, starting with and without the battery, resetting PRAM (tried that a bunch of times), and starting in safe mode with shift (doing that caused it to shut down in 1:08).
I have two disks that came with the MacBook: OS X Install Disc 1 and Disc 2 (2007; v10.5), plus one disk Mac OS X Snow Leopard Install DVD.  If I should try rebooting or reinstalling, which disk(s) should I use?
Or is there another trick to try?
    Thanks!

Try this support article >  Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
Boot from the Snow Leopard disc following the instructions from that article.
While you have Disk Utilty open, check the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom of that window.
    Hopefully it says:  Verified

"First, where are you playing the MPEG-2, that you see that jitter?"
On both a MacBook Pro, an Acer laptop and my Mac Tower. I would love to think that it is a problem with the playback system, and that if I merely send the file off to the duplicator they won't have the same problem. Maybe that is the case...I don't know if I have a choice rather than sending it off to see. But it happens in the same spots, in the same way, on all three of the players so I'm a little reluctant to have faith.
"Another thing that can cause jitter in an MPEG-2 is the Bit-Rate - higher the Bit-Rate, the better the quality, but the larger the file. For a DVD, one is limited by the total Bit-Rate (both Audio & Video), but with longer prodcutions, some users choose too low a Bit-Rate. If this is the issue, one would need to go back to the original Project and do a new Export/Share."
Of course, but in the case there is no more 'original project.' It is gone like the wind, stolen along with his computer and backups.
I think I am stuck using one of two files as my master: a DVD he burned where I only see the stutter/vibration/jitter once, or the mpeg2 file where I see it three times. Hopefully, the duplication house can rip if off of one of them and not see the jitter. I know that in audio, my personal filed, you can do a lot to enhance already existing sound--EQ, compression, tape saturation emulation software, etc. I guess I'm hoping there is some kind of analog to the video world that address jitter after a source has been printed--if indeed the source has been printed to be jittery.
    Thanks,
    Doug

No, you can't partition a Time Capsule's internal HD.  Both partitions will back up to the same sparse bundle. keeping the backups for each partition separate.
Time Machine will not take the two OSX partitions as two different computers, but for best results, exclude the Snow Leopard drive from backups on the Lion partition, and exclude the Lion partition from backups on the Snow Leopard partition.
There may be some files on the Lion partition that Time Machine on Snow Leopard won't like, among other things.  See #10 in  Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for details.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Do you keep your data backed up?
If not, you should always do so*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
You never know when a hard drive or a directory might go bad.  Having a bootable clone is a must.
That link also shows you some tools you can use to recover data.
If you aren't backed up, try buying those tools first, before attempting to repair the directory.
Directory issues can be fixed with these tools*:

Let the battery fully darain. After charging for an least an hour try a reset and restore. Use Recovery mode if necessary.
If not successful, then time for an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • Restoring .dmg image from external to Mac HD in Disk Utility: "Unable to scan image (Input/output error)"

    Hi guys,
So I've got a problem with restoring the image backup I did (using Disk Utility) of my 500GB HD on my MBP which was acting weird or maybe even crashed a few months ago. After creating the backup image and putting it on my external device, I installed Mavericks back to see if everything was alright (mainly the HD) and everything seems okay.
I did try restoring the backup image through disk utility before installing mavericks (thus erasing everything again on the HD) AND after. But nothing..
The whole process starts fine and then it starts scanning the image when after maybe a good 10-15min in I get a message that says that it was unable to scan the image. I tried verifying the disk(s), everything came out "OK". Also tried scanning it through Images > Scan image for Restore... with the same results.
While searching I've seen people getting messages like "Unable to scan filename.dmg (Invalid argument)" and "Unable to scan filename.dmg
(Internal error)" but none have (Input/output error)
    The screen grab is below.
I also came across something about using terminal/commands but I'm not that savvy with it, especially considering that those there had issues with either mounting or trouble finding the image.
I've also tried moving the backup image to a different external device 2TB and also the desktop because I read it may have to do with the format of the externals or maybe free space. But THEN I would get a message saying
"The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in "Mac HD Backup.dmg" can't be read or written. Error code -36"
Fyi ALL my externals are HFS+/Journaled and the backup image format was compressed.
I REALLY don't know what to do next. Was it the wrong move to create a dmg image? Have I lost everything? Is there still a way out?
    If anyone can help, THANKS!
    2012 MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.9.3)

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Snow Leopard corrupted main Mac HD,..can't boot to it HELP Please!

Boy did I have a day today!!
A couple of days ago, I achieved and re-installed OSX 10.5. Upgraded to 10.5.8. Then, I installed Snow Lep and upgraded to 10.6.2. Now, I did all of this in safe boot since at the time, my graphics card was broken. I got a new one today and everything was fine. After I installed all the OSX stuff, some of the programs did not work, such as iCal (said this version does not work with the current OSX version) Spotlight (no response) and Preview (no pictures, just a blank screen).
I called Apple and they told me to re-install SL. I re-started from the CD and the install started. BUT, then a window came on saying the installation failed. So, I restarted again, and same thing. Then, I decided I just leave it for now and just restart and log back in. WRONG! No more Mac HD icon. I now was only able to boot from the CD (no Mac HD icon). I then partitioned part of my other internal HD and tried to install SL on that. It failed on that one as well.
THEN I tried to install 10.5 AND, it worked. Sorry for that long explanation.
Now, I don't think I can get back into my main Mac HD( Can't boot from it). I can get into it from this partitioned one to get files. What are my options now? Can I try to do a repair? If not, I guess I have to do a clean install of 10.5? If that's what I have to do, how would I go about that? Disk Utility, select Mac HD and erase? If yes, which erase? Don't erase Data? Zero out Data? Or is there anything I can do to fix my main drive from the internal Im currently on so I can boot back in?
Thanks in advance for help! Greatly appreciated!!
I get the feeling that I got a corrupt SL install CD.

In a situation that complex I can tell you what I would do (after roughly 25 years doing tech support). I would get all the data files off the drive to another hard drive. I would then back them all up to a second hard drive and I would verify that they are there and that each of those data drives was "good" using Disk Utility and Disk Warrior. Once I had all the data, including email, desktop files, documents, music, pics etc etc and I knew they were backed up independent of the problem drive I would wipe the drive entirely - partition it. Then I would erase it with zeros - a potentially long process but worth the effort IMHO here. Then I'd reinstall 10.5, update fully and go to snow leopard if that's what you want to do. In that process I'd search on any hardware that could be problematic as well as third party software that could have issues. Whether it's 10.5 or 6, I'd update fully and then connect one of the external data drives and copy back documents and other data after all your applications were installed and updated and known to be working. That is a long, obnoxious process. I keep my own "time machine" by having an external boot backup that I only overwrite every once in a while when all is acting solid. A second boot drive backup is made regularly before any major app installation or before any OS update. That way can easily roll back to a recent state or if needed roll back a bit further. All my data are backed up to external drives with the critical stuff backed up twice. It's easier than it sounds with CCC or SuperDuper and in the long run can save hours upon hours. I've been in your shoes and I wish you the best of luck. As long as your data is intact, everything else is just a time consuming pain in the butt.
your SL install should do a thorough checksum verification before it installs. it's not impossible it's still corrupt but unlikely ...assuming you let it do the entire verification.
