Mac Os X 10.5 kernel Memory Leak

I just upgrade to Mac os x 10.5, and have not been able to get any thing done. After I install the big cat and went to do updates it would lock up to were I had to rest the system. Now after many time of this I open activity monitor, and made sure it show all processes. As I watch the kernel would suck the system memory to the point it would max out all 1.5 GB install, then work its way to were it would suck all the hard drive space for VM to the point it would lock up. I once again restarted my mac, and log back in to watch it do again. So what I am asking is does anyone know what may be causing this, and how to fix before I lose my hair!

OK, let's start with, "Do you have a backup"? Are you on 10.5.2, or 10.5? Did you upgrade to 10.5.1, and then use Software Update to update to 10.5.2?
Let's assume all of the above are true. Do these in order until things are fixed.
1. Run Disk Utility, and Repair Permissions.
2. Start off the Leopard disk, and Repair the disk. Start off Disk Warrior, if you have it, and repair the disk (get this, it's a must. Only v 4.1 is Leopard ready).
3. Download the Combo version of 10.5.2, and reinstall it.
4. Do an Archive and Install of Leopard.
5. Erase and install, and Migrate from your backup.

  • Huge memory leaks after upgrading from kernel 2.6.38(?)

    My system began leaking memory some months ago and I've little to no idea what is causing it. The closest hint I can give is that I think these problems started around upgrading from Linux 2.6.38 to 2.6.39 and have continued with 3.0 aswell. Sometimes my whole system freezes due to extensive swapping (HDD usage led stays lit), sometimes it stops after consuming almost all of my 4 GB RAM.
    I think the leak has to come from inside the kernel because all sysmon apps claim no application is eating too much RAM yet the system memory consumption is at 100 % or even using swap. Even after I kill Xorg the memory usage will stay at least at 2.0 GB, when it should be less than half a gig.
    I'd like to guess the blame is on Nouveau, because it was giving me a hell of a time back with Linux 2.6.39. It had a habit of freezing my system when re-enabling suspended compositing (both with Kwin and Mutter). Also video playback was corrupted sometimes. These probs have since been fixed with Linux 3.0.
    I cannot name any spesific app that might trigger this memory leaking. I don't play any games and mainly use Firefox, Chromium and VLC day in, day out.
    There seems to be absolutely no way of reclaiming the reserved memory than rebooting the whole system. I have even tried unloading Nouveau.
    I am currently running the [testing] repo with ~daily upgrades.

    OK, this kind of surprised me. No wonder I couldn't find any relevant stuff while googling for kernel issues. I have had Strigi disabled for some time now because it is miserably broken, but I now disabled the whole Nepomuk too. Let's see if my problem now goes away or what...
    The release of KDE 4.7 Beta 1 actually lines up with the launch of Linux 2.6.39 so this really might be the case. I moved to KDE 4.7 already with the first beta.

  • IDCS5 Mac - Massive memory leaks - Followup to previous discussion

    Hello Everyone:
       After some painful, tedious marching though the code on the Mac, I found something really, really strange.  The code seemed to be working fine, except when a couple of documents were added in the scan jobs.  I isolated one of the documents and removed each object on the page until I came across the object that, when scanned, caused InDesign to report the massive memory leaks.
       The object was a quarter-inch by quarter-inch overset text frame (that's .63 cm by .63 cm for those of you who are used to the more sensible metric system).  In the text frame was a single character, not normally visible when on the page.  According to the ASSERT dialog box that was thrown up on the screen when InDesign was shutting down, this little bitty object was the source of 104450 leaks amounting to between 38,000,000 abd 51,000,000 bytes in leaks.  Here's the code where the leaks must be coming from (and Dirk, I owe you a crow pie...as in I'm gonna have to eat crow...I use PMString for one small command in this snippet, but it seemed so much faster and simpler than what the examples in widestring.h were suggesting):
    //  TI is TextIndex, assigned from a call to IMultiColumnTextFrame::TextStart()
    //  TS is int32 assigned from a call to IMultiColumnTextFrame::TextSpan()
    WideString Text;
    TextIterator beginTextChunk(FrameTextModel,          TI );
    TextIterator endTextChunk(   FrameTextModel, (TS + TI));
    std::copy(beginTextChunk, endTextChunk, std::back_inserter(Text));
    PMString PMText(Text);
    std::string text = PMText.GetPlatformString();
    IdentifyNamesInText(text);
    This final function call could not have been the source of the problem because one of the steps I took in tracking down the problem was to put "return" as the first line in its implementation but the bug still occurred.

    Hi, I don't know if this is relevant or not, particularly since we're on Windows and the problem you're seeing is on Mac.
    One of our guys put in some code to workaround a problem which he encountered using std:;copy with TextIterators under VS2005 (so it would have been CS4)
    /// Alternative to using std::copy to workaround issues using std::copy and TextIterator's in VS2005
    inline void TextIteratorCopy( TextIterator& posBegin, TextIterator& posEnd, WideString& strDest )
        std::back_insert_iterator < WideString > posDest = std::back_inserter( strDest );
        for ( ; posBegin != posEnd; ++posDest, ++posBegin )
            *posDest = *posBegin;
    that said, it might not affect you on the Mac, it might no longer be an issue with CS5 either.

  • Kernel Panic due to memory leak?

    Hello All
    I have recently been noticing an issue where while playing music through iTunes my computer freezes and the music begins to skip forcing me to power down by holding in the power button. I have read most topics on this, however none address a memory leak in the 'iChat Agent.'
    My machine has 4GB of memory (dual 1.8GHz G5, PPC) and have never had this issue before. I am not sure if it is caused by iTunes or if it is just happens to be when listening to music. I have begun to look around and I have noticed that my memory shoots up after 1-2 days of the computer being on. This is due to the iChat Agent... it takes up about 2GB of RAM. Is this normal?
    It has happened 3 times now in the past 2 weeks. Any suggestions?

    well... the first time i got the kernel panic. it was text overlay on my screensaver that was running. The second time the computer just froze. I wonder though if the kernel panic would have eventually happened.
    i keep noticing now that this iChat Agent slowly creeps up during the day to about 2GB Real Memory and 2.4 Virtual Memory. is this normal or causing the freeze??

  • Premiere Pro CC for Mac introduced a viral memory leak

    I have been editing an important new project in Premiere Pro CS6 with a deadline of tomorrow to take a trailer down to the L.A. Film Festival.  An option to download the new CC versions of the Adobe products seemed interesting, especially as I could continue to work with the CS6 version.  However, having downloaded several of the CC versions (Premiere Pro, Photoshop, AE, amongst others) it now seems that there is a serious memory leak.  I watch my memory meter (32Gb installed, Intel i7 machine with applications running off an SSD) drop from 87% to 0% over the course of about 7 minutes.  And according to the memory meter, all used memory is going to Premiere Pro.
    Bigger problem.  There must be some shared library or application files because now the same thing happens in Premiere Pro CS6.
    This is a real issue.  A once in a lifetime opportunity has arisen and Premiere Pro has really screwed it up for me.  The application is unusable.
    When will there be some accountability for this issue at Adobe and, more importantly, an urgent fix?  Perhaps it was a mistake, after all, to switch from FCPX...    Is there AVID in my foreseeable future?

    Take your Time Machine and rewind your system to before you installed CC. Problem solved. Specifically, rewind your HD/Library/Application Support/Adobe and user/Library/Application Support/Adobe folders and see if that fixes it.  It fixed a wonky AE CS6 I had earlier this week (completely unrelated to CC)
    Keep with CS6 until the first updates to CC roll out.
    (And don't ever upgrade a critical app mid-project. I know you know that's a huge professional no-no. You had a system that worked just fine.)

  • Memory Leaks   Unresponsive Mouse

    2009 8 core Mac Pro w/ 24 GB of RAM, ATI Radeon 4870, and a SeriTek PCIe eSATA card (card only has drives connected when running a manual drive clone).  When running Toast 10 or Parallels 9, my RAM will fill up (I use a program called Menu Meters to monitor stuff).  This machine worked just fine under OS 10.9 and earlier - no issues like this at all.  ClamXAV will also completely fill the RAM up (the meter will be full green, instead of part green, then mostly grey when Toast or Parallels fills it up).  I have to use Terminal to purge it so that the machine is usable.
    The other thing that happens is that sometimes when the computer wakes up or I am in the middle of doing something, the mouse will still move, but the dock will not pop open and the left button the mouse doesn't respond.  The right button will open the right click menu, but will not respond normally at all.  I have tried a different Magic Mouse, but the problem is the same.
    I thought that it may be a problem with the factory RAM and the Kingston RAM not playing nicely together.  So I ran it with just the factory 8 GB and then ran it with the Kingston 16 GB - the problem persists no matter which RAM is installed.  All of the RAM also passes the memory tests in Rember and TechTool.
    So, I need to find out if someone thinks that maybe the bluetooth module may be going bad causing the mouse issues.  I also need to find out what is causing the memory leaks.  I followed the steps that someone gave on this site to boot into safe mode, repair permissions, reset PRAM, then reset SMC (or the other way around - I did it like they said to).  It did nothing to fix the problem.
    I need some guidance here.  As I stated early on, the machine worked perfectly with OS 10.9.  I have WAY too much software that I use, so doing a completely fresh install is out of the question - I don't have time to reload everything.  This problem is annoying and I know that I am not the only one having these issues.  Any input will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

    Here is the EtreCheck report:
    Problem description:
    Memory leaks when using Toast 10 or Parallels 9.  Mouse also become unresponsive (it will move, but left button does not work and dock will not pop open - mouse problem happens independent of the RAM being filled up - different mouse was tried with same result).

  • My iMac keeps crashing due to a memory leak....  Any thoughts on what this means?

    I'll be using my iMac (27" late 2009) and it will suddenly cut to black.  Then after a second or two, a grey screen will appear and tell me an issue occured and to push any key to restart.  Once the computer restarts, the issue report pops up and it says I have a memory leak.  I don't know what that means, or how to fix it.  Any thoughts on the cause of why it's doing this, or the impending doom it may be heralding?  I've posted the issue report below incase anyone can glean anything from it.  Thanks for your help.

    Boot into safe mode (restart holding down SHIFT key). If no KP, then uninstall and reinstall those 3rd-party items that Roger pointed out, one at a time, and restart. Continue until you determine which ones are causing the problem. If KP while in safe mode, then most likely hardware related. Run the Apple Hardware Test suite, extended tests at least twice, followed by Rember.  See

    IS this a bug in Mac OS X or into Cisco ?

    Why do you think it is a memory leak? It sounds like just a Cisco bug. There is a reason Cisco version numbers are 6 digits long. Try getting a newer version.

  • MacBook crashing every so often with a some sort of memory leak? Need help to pinpoint cause.

    I've only owned this Macbook for about 4 months now and it has started giving me this save memory leak issue every so often. I am not 100% sure if this is the proper place to post this kind of stuff, but I've tried to uninstall some things that I've added in the last month (which is when it started). No luck.
    Can anyone tell what it might be just by looking?

    I'm sorry to have conveyed that impression. I do very much like EtreCheck, but it is completely misused by too many people who seem to think it's the answer to all problems. If is excellent for what it does. I helped beta test it for the developer. But it's a tool best used when a helper specifically asks for it when it is needed. That isn't for kernel panics. It may well be that some software can cause the panic, but the panic itself is generally in hardware. You can see that in the first few lines of the report. I urge you to learn more about them:
    Mac OS X- How to log a kernel panic
    OS X- About kernel panics
    Technical Note TN2063- Understanding and Debugging Kernel Panics
    Tutorial - Avoiding and eliminating Kernel panic
    What's a "kernel panic"? (Mac OS X)
    OSXFAQ - Troubleshooting Kernel Panics
    Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics.
    You will find a wealth of information about panics in the above references. There are many panic reports that simply don't give us any clues as to their root cause. They can be frustrating to deal with. But when someone is having a kernel panic EtreCheck is simply not the tool you whip out first or even second.
    Good luck learning and a Happy New Year.

  • Airport Extreme appears to have memory leak; sluggish after long uptime

    For a long time now, I have been frustrated by what appears to be a memory leak in the Airport Extreme firmware. After the unit has been running for a few weeks (and this varies from one week to one month approximately), the WLAN to LAN routing performance will drop drastically. It will go from ping times (from a WLAN host to a LAN host) of 1 mS or less to ping times in excess of one second.
    In this broken state, all traffic through the unit is dog slow. Doesn't matter what the traffic is-- if it's to and from the wireless LAN, it's going to take forever.
    If I power cycle the Airport Extreme, the problem will go away for another few weeks. I have dealt with this issue for several years with the hope that eventually a firmware upgrade would come that fixed it. So far, no such fix.
    Is anyone else experiencing this sort of behavior? When it isn't sluggish, the unit works wonderfully with Mac, Windows and Linux wireless clients so I have no reason to blame anything but the Extreme... particularly since the bandaid is a power cycle of it.
    All of my clients are 802.11b/g, no 'n' in service here.

See

  • Yosemite and Mail massive memory leak and excessive CPU usage

    I've just installed Yosemite and upgraded to 10.10.2 via the AppStore. Now I have a problem with Mail sucking up all the CPU (>106% !) and memory (>8Gb and rising while doing nothing). Everything runs fine when I quit Mail. Very disturbing behaviour!
    I've tried several suggestions found elsewhere on the board here, such as turning off and even removing all Mail plug-ins including SpamSieve, but without positive results. I've tried un-selecting 'Store draft msgs on server', as well as the option for junk and sent msgs. but again without any difference. Going Offline within Mail also makes no difference to its memory hogging or CPU usage.
    I notice this is an issue that's been around since last year (wish I'd known that before upgrading to Yosemite today) and I am just completely flabbergasted that it still exists. Would've thought Apple'd have fixed it in the first but certainly in the second incremental OSX Yosemite release.
    Is there anything else I could try that's proven to be effective in stopping Mail's massive memory leak?

    Okay, I've run Disk Util and restarted. Seems to have made a little bit of a difference to the RAM gobbling in that it appears to be going at a slower rate, but it's still up at around the 45Gb after an hour. Here's the EtreCheck report in the hope that it helps.

  • T61 with memory leak on XP for driver battc.sys

    Hi
    I have an issue with XP where the battc.sys module that is part of Windows XP and responsible for the kernel side of monitoring the battery status. This module continually leaks memory until I have no more kernel paged resources left and programs start to fail on my laptop.
    I raised a support case for this with Microsoft and after some investigation and upgrading to the latest T61 power drivers that were released a few days ago on the Lenovo site, MS support told me it is a fault of the T61 and that I would need to disable Microsoft APCI support to stop this memory leak from occuring and to take the issue up with Lenovo.
    I have used the verifier tool to confirm that it is the Windows XP SP3 battc.sys memory module leaking.
    I am running the latest T61 drivers and fully patch with MS drivers on SP3.
    As MS have told me it is the fault of the T61 I am posting this issue here.
    Thanks
    Stephen

    It is memory available to the kernelwhich itself does not show under a process in task manager as far as I am aware (unles it is taken account as part of the system process).
    The best way to measure the available kernel memory space available is by using sysinternals procexp.
    You need to download procexp and also install the windows debugging tools from Microsoft. Then in procexp set the "Options > Configure Symbols : Debughlp.dll path" to the new debughlp.dll installed with your debu tools and set the symbols path to srv*c:\Symbols*http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols
    Then you can choose in procexp "View > System Information" and see the used and total paged and non-paged kernel memory space.
    poolmon helps monitor all the symbols that are taking up this memory and verifier lets you drill down to the exact module and the changes in memory for a module that is occuring.
    Here are two really good links on it
    http://blogs.msdn.com/ntdebugging/archive/2006/12/18/Understanding-Pool-Consumption-and-Event-ID_3A0...
    http://blogs.msdn.com/ntdebugging/archive/2008/05/08/tracking-down-mmst-paged-pool-usage.aspx
    In my poolmon i notice that Mmst and battc are taking alot of memory after my computer has been running for some time. Mmst being high is normal but battc should not continually be growing as it is which is why I raised the case to MS but they want verification it is not a Lenovo issue.

  • Address Book Sync Memory Leak

    Address Book Sync Memory Leak , Using 5.6GB of Real Memory
    Has anyone had issues with this? I have to force quit the process from Activity Monitor every 30 minutes.
    Sampling process 3337 for 3 seconds with 1 millisecond of run time between samples
    Sampling completed, processing symbols...
    Analysis of sampling AddressBookSync (pid 3337) every 1 millisecond

    Unfortunately not. No groups and any Mobile Me account here not even many contacts (436) and any duplicates except in Ical after having restored my iphone 4 times. Something strange too, 2 weeks ago, Isync was running while I'm not registered on MM nor Icloud (turned off on my iphone) . Maybe a conflict between Outlook, Addressbook, Itunes and Isync on SL....I'm going crasy with this issue It reminds me of Windows ! Thx anyway, I'm gooing to contact apple in the following days.

  • Memory leak in weblogic 6.0 sp2 oracle 8.1.7 thin driver

    Hi,
         I have a simple client that opens a database connection, selects from
    a table containing five rows of data (with four columns in each row)
    and then closes all connections. On running this in a loop, I get the
    following error after some time:
    <Nov 28, 2001 5:57:40 PM GMT+06:00> <Error> <Adapter>
    <OutOfMemoryError in
    Adapter
    java.lang.OutOfMemoryError
    <<no stack trace available>>
    >
    <Nov 28, 2001 5:57:40 PM GMT+06:00> <Error> <Kernel> <ExecuteRequest
    failed
    java.lang.OutOfMemoryError
    I am running with a heap size of 64 Mb. The java command that runs
    the client is:
    java -ms64m -mx64m -cp .:/opt/bea/wlserver6.0/lib/weblogic.jar
    -Djava.naming.f
    actory.initial=weblogic.jndi.WLInitialContextFactory
    -Djava.naming.provider.url=
    t3://garlic:7001 -verbose:gc Test
    The following is the client code that opens the db connection and does
    the select:
    import java.util.*;
    import java.sql.*;
    import javax.naming.*;
    import javax.sql.*;
    public class Test {
    private static final String strQuery = "SELECT * from tblPromotion";
    public static void main(String argv[])
    throws Exception
    String ctxFactory     = System.getProperty
    ("java.naming.factory.initial");
    String providerUrl     = System.getProperty
    ("java.naming.provider.url");
    Properties jndiEnv          = System.getProperties ();
    System.out.println ("ctxFactory : " + ctxFactory);
    System.out.println ("ProviderURL : " + providerUrl);
    Context ctx     = new InitialContext (jndiEnv);
    for (int i=0; i <1000000; i++)
    System.out.println("Running query for the "+i+" time");
    Connection con = null;
    Statement stmnt = null;
    ResultSet rs     = null;
    try
    DataSource ds     = (DataSource) ctx.lookup
    (System.getProperty("eaMDataStore", "jdbc/eaMarket"));
    con = ds.getConnection ();
    stmnt = con.createStatement();
    rs = stmnt.executeQuery(strQuery);
    while (rs.next ())
    //System.out.print(".");
    //System.out.println(".");
    ds = null;
    catch (java.sql.SQLException sqle)
    System.out.println("SQL Exception : "+sqle.getMessage());
    finally
    try {
    rs.close ();
    rs = null;
    //System.out.println("closed result set");
    } catch (Exception e) {
    System.out.println("Exception closing result set");
    try {
    stmnt.close ();
    stmnt = null;
    //System.out.println("closed statement");
    } catch (Exception e) {
    System.out.println("Exception closing result set");
    try {
    con.close();
    con = null;
    //System.out.println("closed connection");
    } catch (Exception e) {
    System.out.println("Exception closing connection");
    I am using the Oracle 8.1.7 thin driver. Please let me know if this
    memory leak is a known issue or if its something I am doing.
    thanks,
    rudy

    Repost in JDBC section ... very serious issue but it may be due to Oracle or
    to WL ... does it happen if you test inside WL itself?
    How many iterations does it take to blow? How long? Does changing to a
    different driver (maybe Cloudscape) have the same result?
