MAC OS X 10.6.8 startup taking 8 minutes after 21 july Software upgrade

Before the upgrade which the startup time (booting time) is around 1 min.
After the recent software upgrade/update on 21 july 2011 it is taking around 8 minutes.
I almost did everything including cleaning the caches, strartup items, disk verify, disk repair, permissions etc.
Almost 70% of my harddisk is free.
I reported to the Apple support guys and the reply what I got was "Generally this will happen during software upgrades".
This was a disgusting reply.
Apple support is POOR.
Recently I moved to MAC OS X from linux thinking that it will be more robust.
Ubuntu (Linux) is taking less than 10 sec to boot on my dell and I did not face any problem with it till now.
Because of track pad guestures only I moved to OS X. May be I made a mistake.
Please help me if any one has faced this type of problem.
Thanks.

  • My Mac is not authorized to play a video 5 minutes after it was purchased

I just "purchased" a free video at the iTunes Store. A few minutes after the download finished, I attempted to play the video as was greeted with an Authorize Computer dialog reporting "This computer is not authorized to play 'title of the video'. Would you like to authorize it?"
I have been playing music, videos and TV shows on this Mac since it was new in September 2007, and my iTunes Purchased list goes back to 2004.
I've investigated further and found ...
    1. Recent music purchases play fine, probably because they have no DRM.
    2. Recent TV shows get the authorization block.
    3. Older music purchases get the authorization block.
    4. iTunes on my iBook gets no authorization block.
This is the first time I've seen this authorization warning.
iTunes' Apple Account Information reports "3 machines are authorized to play content purchased with this account." Although there's no way to see the identify of those 3 machines, I quite sure they're my desktop Mac (now getting authorization blocks), my iBook, and my wife's Mac.
Before I take the easy way out and reauthorize my desktop Mac (and possibly lose one of my five authorizations), I'd like to know more about what happened.
Could this be the result of upgrading from Mac OS X 10.5.6 to 10.5.7 four days ago?
    -- Ward

Macaroni does a nightly Repair Permissions. I had restarted a couple of times since upgrading to 10.5.7; I did another for good measure. My Mac remained unauthorized.
I took Mike's advice and deauthorized my Mac. As I expected, that dropped my Apple Account Computer Authorizations from 3 to 2. Reauthorizing restored my ability to play protected music and videos.
Although my problem has been resolved, I'm leaving this topic as unanswered because it remains a mystery why my Mac was in authorization limbo.

  • Restart/Wake up time taking 30 minutes after installing Yosemite

I installed Yosemite one week ago and everything worked perfectly for the first few days. But then one day I had to restart my computer because I had problems with Steam...My Mac shut down, then restarted to the grey screen. The loading bar progressed slowly (It would have taken 2 minutes to load if it kept loading at that speed) but then it simply stopped by 50%. i restarted again after waiting for 10 minutes, the same thing happened again so I decided to let it running overnight. The next morning my Mac loaded. Then the next day after I shut down my computer the same thing happened again! After searching for help in another computer for 40 minutes, I restarted the computer, the loading bar finally loaded. The time of the process the second time took around 45 minutes.
I haven't seen anyone else with the same problem. Can anyone tell me whats happening?
Also, my Macbook is mid-2010, if it helps.

    Defective installation.
Install or Reinstall Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion, or Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • HT1349 My I Mac won't start up after a failed software upgrade?

My computre stated that I had software updates.  I clicked the button to download and restart my computer.  A few minutes later the computer said that the downloads were unsuccessful and then froze up.  I have shut it down several times and when I restart the Apple logo appears and this little circle keeps going around and around.  I have let this go on far about 10 minutes each time but nothing happens.
Any ideas as to what I can do?

Did you use a geniune windows installation disc? I ask this because I worked on a computer today where someone had tried to use a Windows XP disc that came with a Dell computer. These do not work.
If it was a genuine install disc, did you get all the way through with the installation, or did something go wrong during the install?

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged after the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • MBP Startup takes 6 to 7 Minutes after installation of 10.8.4

After the installation of 10.8.4, the boot-process gets stuck for about 5 minutes until the desktop appears.
As file vault is enabled it looks like this:
    1. Power on
    2. after a few seconds the Password dialog shows up
    3. Spinning wheel for ~ 75 seconds
    6. Grey background, Apple-Logo, Mouse Cursor in the upper left corner which can not be moved by the touchpad for ~ 5 minutes
    7. Desktop appears after the 5 min.
    What I did so far:
    * All kinds of resets (DRAM ...)
    * Removed and updated software like VMWare Fusion, Antivir-App and some other stuff.
    * Checked file system rights and repaired it
    * reinstalled 10.8.4 update
...that did not solve the problem, so i did a clean install:
    * delete disk
    * reinstalled 10.8.3 from the recovery partition
... at this point everything was back to normal ...
    * installed 10.8.4 from the app store
... and voila, the problem is back (installation is still clean - I did not install additional software or change anything aside from creating the first user).
    HW: 15" MBP Retina, 1,7 GHz i7, 16GB RAM, Early 2013, Intel HD Graphics 4000 512 MB.
    Any Ideas?
    Cheers M

  • Why does my 2006 Mac Pro 1,1 crash on startup?

    Hi, folks--
My 2006 Mac Pro is regularly crashing on startup with a kernel panic. It will chime on startup and usually show me the Apple startup screen with the spinning wheel-- but after that, I get the multi-language "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the Power button again" message. Sometimes it doesn't even get there-- the spinning wheel just freezes, and stays frozen. Every once in a while, the Mac will start up, but the mouse will be so unresponsive that it takes me several minutes to mouse over to Restart so I can try again. (I've checked the mouse on another computer and it works fine.)
    Additional info:
    • I have one SSD startup disk with Lion, and two HDD startup disks with Snow Leopard. Starting up with any of these three disks results in the problems described above. This suggests to me that it's a hardware problem, rather than a problem with a specific startup disk.
    • I tried starting up from my Snow Leopard Install disk. It was able to start up successfully. All the data on my hard drives seemed to be intact, including Lion Install, so I tried re-installing Lion on my SSD. It showed the blue progress bar for a minute. Then it said it would restart my computer in 30 seconds-- at which point, I once again got the multi-language "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button ETC" crash. If even the install disk is crashing, this again suggests a hardware problem.
    • I set the Mac Pro to target mode, and used it as a startup disk for my wife's Macbook. It functioned just fine and there were no crashes. Again, confirmation that it is a hardware problem with my Mac Pro.
    • I have zapped the PRAM. I have also run Disk Utility, repaired permissions, and verified the disk. This did not fix the issue. (Not surprising if it is a hardware problem.)
    • HOWEVER:  I put in the install disk that came with the computer originally and was able to complete the Hardware Test. I chose the most thorough option. It did not find any problems.
    • This started happening three days ago. I'm not aware of any recent changes to the system that could have caused this. The most recent change I made was installing a Radeon HD 5770  graphics card and an SSD drive, more than a month ago. There was no sign of trouble after I installed either of them (except for some problems putting the Mac Pro to sleep, which is apparently a known issue with the Radeon 5770 in this model Mac Pro).
    • Weirdly, after I fiddle with the Mac Pro for an hour or so (run diagnostics, reboot it repeatedly, etc) it seems to start working. If there is indeed a hardware problem, then perhaps something works better when it's warmed up.
Is there anything you'd suggest I try? Or am I stuck lugging it to the Genius Bar? I don't have a car, so this is a bit of a pain…
Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

Thanks, The Hatter. I'm working through all the links you've provided and see if I can narrow down the problem.
And, Grant, thanks as well-- I really appreciate the specific information. You've enabled me to track down the panic log -- but they are indeed baffling. I'm pasting one below, in case somebody wiser than I can interpret it for me.

  • Why is the Mac HD icon missing in the Startup Disk window?

The Mac HD icon is missing in the Startup Disk window in the Lion Partition on my iMac. It is also missing from the Snow Leopard partition.  I did not install Lion on my MacBook and the Mac HD icon is in the Startup Disk.

MacOSX, 10.6.8,             Mac OSX, 10.7,        Network Startup     (no MacOSX icon)

    Any ideas about this?

  • Startup taking too long and remote control

    Hi,
today i used this cocktail software to run routine maintenance on my iMac G5(10.5.1), after the the software did it's thing issues started popping up
    1. the initial start up sound the one when the light comes on, stays on for like 3 mins with a blank screen.
    2. in the security pref. the apple remote control option has suddenly disappeared and the remote does not work, the remote it's works with my hi-fi and macbook so i am really lost i don't know what i have done
    pls help

Yes i used the cocktail compaitble with leopard. the system appears to be working fine now but before that it displayed temp madness.
i tried to reset the system with cmdopt+PR, it took 2 mins for it to realize i was even pressing the keyboard when it finally did the fan went full power for a couple of seconds (the ambient light still on) and the system shut down. i tried to start it up again it will make the startup noise then shutdown i did that 5 times until i removed all the cables connected to it before it came back on. it started got to the desktop but 2 hardware's were disabled, USB's ports and the audio driver had to restart again.
now i am afraid to shut it down.

  • IMac 20" taking 40 minutes to boot up

iMac taking 40 minutes to boot up.

Remove any apps you have setup to launch when you boot the Mac.
Open System Preferences > Users & Groups or if you are running v10.6 Snow Leopard it's System Preferences > Accounts / Login Items.
Make sure there's enough free space on the startup disk.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.
Run Disk Utility to verify or repair disks
When you post please tell us which Mac OS X you have installed.   Thank you !!
