Mac OS X 10.6.8 won't restart for software update

The Mac doesn't properly restart to install software update (along with other updates), instead it goes directly to the log in for different users.

Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

  • Mac won't restart during software update

I'm trying to install the 10.7.1 update. My Mac won't restart when I okay the restart -- it just goes to the log-in page. Suggestions? It's bad enough I lost info on on of my Lacie drives due to Lion. So now I can't update.
Thanks very much for any help you can provide.

Yikes -- "hosed"?  One of my LaCie drives won't mount. I went to the Apple store last night and the "experts" said that a firmware update will be released at some point, but not everyone is having problems. I wonder if I should reinstall Lion to see if that would help reset everything.....
But then, that's for another thread (which I started but no one could supply an answer).
    Thanks for your replies, baltwo.

  • Mac 10.6.3 won't restart after software update

I just installed Snow Leopard on my mac and that was successful. I went to do a software update afterwards (hoping to move up to 10.6.8) and it went through, but when the computer had to restart, it would just shut down, and reboot to the purple-ey space-ey background image....and just stay there.. The computer will shut down fine by holding the power button, and it will start up fine. It's just after the software update, that it will not restart fully. Any ideas?

I don't want to hijack the thread with my problem
But you are. You can avoid that by starting your own posting. The original poster has never responded, since Feb 18th, to anyone, so it is unlikely that he would respond to you.
If a friend gave you the iMac with Lion on it, he most likely didn't give you his Apple ID and password either, because that is what you would need to do future updates. Your copy of Lion is most likely licensed to the previous owner, not you. He should have given you the Mac with it's original disks and the original OS X version installed.
When you post your own issue, you can reward those that help you by awarding points. That won't work when you hijack someone else's thread, because only the original poster can award points. Thus you're removing an incentive for anyone wanting to answer your replies. Not to mention that it waters down the intent go the original issue as more and more variables are added to the thread.

  • IBook G$ won't restart after software update

Hi there Gurus (and thanks for all you do)
A friend came to visit yesterday, from her remote village where she has no access to high-speed internet.
Naturally she took the opportunity to run Software Update on her iBook while she was here. Sadly since the update the iBook won't successfully restart. It stays at the grey screen with the gear turning infinitely.
I haveed tried to start in verbose mode, and it then gets stuck repeatedly trying to run "/System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOS/loginwindow: Login Window Application Started" - over and over again.
She has returned home and will send me her install disks, but I wondered if there is anything anyone can suggest that might help.
    Thanks,
    Nikki

Transferring files between two computers using FireWire.
    To transfer files using FireWire:
    1. Shut down the first computer and leave the second computer on.
    2. Connect the two computers using a 6-pin to 6-pin FireWire cable. (If both computers have higher-speed FireWire 800 ports in addition to the standard FireWire 400 ports, you can use a 9-pin to 9-pin cable with the FireWire 800 ports to transfer data at higher speeds.)
    3. Open System Preferences, click the Startup Disk, and click Target Disk Mode. (Or, start up the first computer while holding down the T key.)
    4. A disk icon for the first computer appears on the desktop on the second computer. Drag files to and from the disk to transfer them.
    5. When you finish, eject the first computer's disk by dragging its icon to the Trash. (While you drag, the Trash icon changes to an Eject icon.)
    6. Push the power button on the first computer to shut it down and disconnect the FireWire cable.

  • Nokia 3250 won't restart after software update

I did what the Installation and upgrading instructions told me to do, but after finishing the update (everything went fine), my phone stops with the Nokia starting-up screen and then appears the so called White Screen of Death.
I want to fix this ASAP, what is the next step?
How long will take the fix if I have to leave my phone on the Nokia Service Care? Is it a matter of a few minutes or it will take a couple of days?
My warranty is valid (one month old).
    Best wishes,

  • MBP won't restart after software update

This is regarding my MacBook Pro 17" late 2009 edition running OSX 10.7.2
Yesterday while running a routine Software Update which included latest iTunes and OSX system updates, my MBP was stalled during one of the last steps of installation process (something titled like copying files to right locations..). I waited for hours and ultimately hit the power button to restart. Since then my MBP only restarts to the stage of apple logo appearing on grey followed by the spinning cartwheel which seems to go on forever. No blue/ login screen appears even after I waited for over an hour. Seems like the update process was not successful and in turn broke the system startup.
I then fixed the disk permissions and repaired the hdd using disk utility from my original install disk but still no luck.
I even tried to reinstall macosx but it presents the hdd as unavailable. Could it be because I only have about 70gb free on this 500gig hdd?
What is the best course for me to get my MBP up and running again, please help!

Try command-R at startup to get into Lion Recovery. You have several options from repair to reinstall. Read these links when you get it running again.

  • Ipod mini won't connect after software update

I was using my ipod mini without problems on my mac powerboook until I downloaded and installed the latest ipod software updater yesterday. Since installing the application and clicking update in the software I can't get my computer to recognise the mini at all no matter what I do. Neither Itunes or the software updater sees my ipod and the ipod itself either says do not disconnect or shows a folder icon with an exclamation mark. Anybody know how to get out of this limbo state it seems to be in?

One thing you can try (AT YOUR OWN RISK - though I have done this on my own iPod mini using my PB and it has fixed issues similar to those that you are reporting), connect the iPod to your mac and then launch the disk utility app. If you're on a windows machine, this obviously won't help you although there may be a similar procedure. When the disk utility app comes up, if your iPod shows up in the left panel after a moment, highlight it by clicking on the name. If you try to verify it, you'll probably get a report of errors - don't panic - go to the erase pane and erase the drive (I think you can select either format with journaled or unjournaled - they both seem to work for me). MAKE SURE YOU"VE SELECTED THE iPOD DISK BEFORE YOU ERASE THE DRIVE!!!
After you erase the drive, you'll need to reapply the latest iPod update to restore the iPod OS (if you don't do this you may still be able to load music but it won't play and you'll still see the exclamation point display). After you reapply the update, you will hopefully back to normal. Re load your tunes and enjoy your iPod again!
    Hope this helps.

Hola, buen dia, Ignacio. Saludos desde México.
    To get the Mac App Store back you will need to manually download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.7 Update Combo;
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1361
It is safe to install this over your current installation of 10.6.7. It will reinstall the Mac App Store, as well as fill in any gaps that your installation my have. It is a common troubleshooting step.

Open Activity Monitor, Show:>All Processes, sort on CPU%, see if anything using too much CPU% when this happens, click on Memory tab, do you have many Pageouts?
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
Check the S.M.A.R.T. status of the drive in Disk Utilty by highlighting the Drive & looking at the bottom of the window.

  • Mac Mini OS Won't After Failed Software Update

I selected to update to the latest iTunes, QuickTime, and OS-X updates. Both QuickTime and OS-X failed to update completely. I then reselected to update QuckTime again and it updated successfully and promted to restart the Mac, which I did.
Upon restarting, the Mac would boot into the OS. It just freezes at the OS X screen. I followed the step in the User's Guide to start by holding down the "option" key and power button. It started into screen with the HD, return, and right arrown icon. The HD icon shows the drive and a red "x" at the corner.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

I tried the Disk Utility first. It found a Bit Map error and did a self-repair. The status was "disk repaired successfully". So somehow the failed update corrupted something. However, in the end, the OS still wouldn't start.
Then I reinstalled the Mac OS 10.4.2 system and archived the old system. All user accounts and software appeared to be preserved. I have yet to check everything. Next I ran the software update again. It found about 7 required updates, including QuickTime 7.1.5 and Mac OS X Update Combine (PowerPC) 10.4.9. Again QuickTime an d Mac OS X failed to update. I did not force it to update the second time.
    Questions:
Is it okay to remove the folder "Previous System" at this point?
What to do with those 2 failed updates?
    Thanks
    Les
