Mac OS X 10.8.3 causes random reboots.

I bought my MacBook Pro in October 2007 (2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo). After updating to 10.8.3, my computer randomly re-boots. I can also provoke it by opening a page with a couple flash videos or other processor intensive content. My computer became esentially unusable since the update. I did re-install everything and it didn't fix the problem. I can boot from an external harddrive that has an oder version of OS X and everything is fine. What can I do, there seems to be no way of downgrading to OS X 10.8.3.

When you say you performed a reinstall, did you install the Combo version or the regular 10.8.3 update ?  You might consider installing the 10.8.3 Combo version on top of your 10.8.3 installation.  Sometimes when an instlal doesn't completely take, this will help.  You can get it here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1640 .
You might also consider clearing all of your cache flies.  In theory it shouldn't matter.  But, in some cases it might help.  Certainly won't hurt.

  • ITunes causes random reboot

Ever since I built my new machine, iTunes has caused my computer to reboot. I can play music in other ways without getting a reboot (e.g. internet radio through pandora.com). I can also play memory demanding video games(e.g. FEAR, Supreme Commander) for hours without any reboot. Is this a hardware problem, or something else? Opening iTunes is fine, it is just while I'm trying to play music. After anywhere from 0-45 minutes, the computer will reboot. I have experienced no other problems with my machine while not playing music with iTunes. Any ideas?
    Some specs:
    Motherboard: DFI Infinity 975 X/G
    Processor: Core 2 Duo E6600
    Video Card: ATI x1900xt

I was posting on other forums as well, and a guy at www.windowsforum.org had the solution. If you uninstall Quicktime, and then install it with the standalone quicktime installer, it should work. It's a problem with quicktime when it is installed with the itunes installer.

  • K7T TURBO 2 - RANDOM REBOOT PROBS

I am just about ready to give up oin this mobo.  My PC reboots RANDOMLY without warning with my KT7 Turbo 2 Mobo. I have already replaced the following components:
    - Power Supply (Enermax 350W)
    - RAM (Micron)
    - Video Card (Radeon 8500)
    - CPU (AMD 1800XP)
Running latest BIOS + VIA Drivers. Reinstalled XP Pro O/S twice. System runs pretty cool @ 32C and CPU @ 45 on full load. Still the problem occurns, the computer will run for whole day no problem, then it will reboot 5 times the next day. No specific occurance, sometimes during games sometimes just browsing the web. It is driving me nuts! Anyone know of a BIOS setting or sometihing that may cause random reboots ? I've heard of over heating (not present) bad ram (replaced) bad power supply (replaced) even replaced the CPU ! LOL. Me thinks it's back to ASUS, more money but damn rock hard stability.

i got the same probs with the same motherboard...ms.6330...pc reboot by itself and can't find a solution....try to change power supply...try to disconnect reset button from motherboard....problem is still here....
shall i learn some basic voodoo?

  • Neo 3 Platinum random reboots

Hi, I have an old build as stated above that I sold to my son in law.  It has been working fine for about three years except the cheap power supply died about a year ago (it came with the box) so I replaced it with a seasonic.  Anyway, it recently has started to randomly reboot itself once or twice a day.  It's hard to believe it is the power supply.  If it was wouldn't it just turn off and not reboot?  I haven't had a chance to actually look at it yet but was wondering if anyone knew what would cause random reboots.  It isn't overclocked.  Thanks

PSU can also be blamed for random restarts. as the PSU heats up, the efficiency goes down and this my cause your system not to receive enough power, thus shutting down or restarting. i would suggest to test with a different PSU if all the memtests are OK and the system temps are within normal ranges.

  • Random rebooting. Mac Pro. Bootcamp.  Why?

    Hi
I have an early 2008 Mac Pro running bootcamp and last night it started randomly rebooting. Sometimes it occurs a couple minutes after it has booted. Sometimes it takes longer.
As I am pretty Mac-illiterate I would greatly value any help in this matter because I do not know what to do.
    Here is some background info:
Early 2008 Mac Pro. Dual quad core intel Xeon processors, 2.8 Ghz (8 cores total). 20GB RAM. Video card is Nvidia 2GB Quadro 4000.
It got a new main board installed under warranty in about 2009.
Less than a year ago it got new Hard Drives (4X SATA), OS, Graphics card, Matrox MX02 mini max card with external rack.  It boots to Mac OS 10.7 Lion but I almost always boot it and use Windows 7 Pro 64 bit using bootcamp because most of my work is done with windows software.
Since the new drives, graphics card, Matrox Mini Max, Mac OS, Windows 7 SP1, and fresh install of all software and plugins it has worked excellent (until last night and today).
The newest system drive is divided between Windows 6 and Lion. 2 of the other drives are for windows media and the 4th is for Mac media.
The version of bootcamp is whatever came with Lion 10.7.
The computer was only connected to the internet when I did the os download, install and all the software activations. It has not been connected since then.
What seems to happen is approx 2 minutes after booting to windows it will just reboot and I hear the chime and it goes to a windows black error screen asking to start normally, etc..  It usually will then reboot another 1-3 times before it finally loads windows and then appears to work normally.
At that point it may work for several minutes or longer until it reboots again.
The rebooting occurs just sitting on the desktop and not running any particular program.
This morning after several reboots I held down "option" and instead booted to Mac OS to see if it would reboot. It sat on the desktop screen for several minutes with no problem. However then I had to shut it down and leave so I certainly cannot conclude whether or not the reboot problem occurs in both Windows and Mac OS or not....yet.
I don't know if it's a power supply (hardware), Operating system problem or what.  I'm lost and I really need this computer to work.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.

I booted to Lion and let it sit on the desktop. Went to eat and came back in the room about 10 minutes or so later and the screen was black but the tower white light was on.
I pressed the "up arrow" key and it came alive, fans and all. The screen light to the mac desktop very briefly and then it rebooted and rebooted again before finally starting windows.
Btw, I have preferences set to start windows unless I hold down option on the Mac keyboard and select the Mac OS for boot.
So Mac OS is not spared from the problem. What is going on.
Now I've been working over half an hour in windows and it's working fine....for now. ?!

It appears the 15" 2.2 ghz isn't worth spending $400 more for, but you get the 1GB Radeon 6750M that has four times the VRAM than the 15" 2.0Ghz model and about 167% more performance. High settings on all current games with over 50 fps.
If your not into 3D gaming or just light weight, then the 2.0 Ghz (last years performance) will suffice on low-medium settings at about 30 fps.
The 13" is rather poor as it has integrated graphics. 30 fps on only some games.
The high res screen is a excellent choice and the anti-glare is great for viewing just about anywhere.
No messy films to replace at $30-$40 a pop.
A lot of people bring the glossy screens back once they hear about the anti-glare.
    http://www.pcpro.co.uk/blogs/2011/05/23/glossy-vs-matte-screens-why-the-pc-indus trys-out-of-touch/
    Here's my 17"
In my opinion the extra $400 for another 2-3 years of use out of the computer is worth it.
Quad cores are more than enough for most uses for most people for many years, it's just a slow card is going to make the machine feel slow in rendering graphics in the future.

  • 3750-24T-L randomly reboots without a cause

We have a WS-C3750X-24T-L switch that has 2 300W power supplies installed that is randomly rebooting its self about once a week. It is connected to a UPS, we have confirmed that the UPS and line power have not been interrupted at any time when the switch restarts. The logs show the switch was: Last reset from power-on. We have flipped the supplies positions in the switch and it still reboots. I have attached the output from running show tech.
Any ideas what may be going on?

    Hi,
First off, I am trying to discard bug CSCtw50892, in which the switch shows "power-on" no matter what the actual cause is.
If there is a crash or anything, this bug does not allow us see the actual last reset reason.
Could you reload the switch via console out of business hours?
    Switch#reload
Proceed with reload? [confirm]  <<< (press enter)
Thereafter, you should see the following when typing "show ver"
Router uptime is 3 days, 18 hours, 39 minutes
    System restarted by [reload cause]
System restarted by reload or system returned to ROM by reload
Let me go through the show tech and get back to you.

  • As of Firefox 36, disabling OMTC causes random crashes

As of Firefox 36, disabling OMTC causes random crashes in Firefox. This is particularly concerning, as THIS very support site (support.mozilla.org) has "please try disabling OMTC" as a common suggestion for a number of screen rendering issues. I think that going forward, asking people to "try disabling OMTC" will only WORSEN the issue, as a catastrophic Firefox crash which could cause loss of data is much worse than a screen rendering glitch.
To be clear, I am referring to the following setting in about:config:
    layers.offmainthreadcomposition.enabled = FALSE

hello, could you provide your latest few submitted crash reports? please enter '''about:crashes''' into the location bar, copy the latest few report ids from there starting with '''bp-''' & paste them here into a forum reply. thank you

  • Mac Pro random reboots

Just installed a new intel mac pro - upgraded from my older power mac model - and i notice that it seems to randomly reboot itself. Sometime after a powersave screen shutdown. I am using my old apple display with a converter box. Any ideas welcome. Thanks

Sounds like a hardware issue, possibly an incompatibility with the converter box. You're under warranty -- call AppleCare.

  • Z10 Random reboot a possible cause.

I also am having that seemingly random rebooting; till a pattern emerged.  With out my clip-on case and with the portable one that forms into a stand I noticed that every type the phone hit something hard on the back panel it reset.  Without the case, I started tapping with a small hard object and whenever I hit where under the battery is located, the phone rebooted every time. Replaced the battery, and so far, the problem has gone away. Could be because it is a new battery (connector do not the play that a battery that has been inserted many times has) or because it is a different battery or some other reason but whatever, the battery seems to be a part or all of the problem.
    Running OS 10.1.0.4181
    STL 100-3

That's been reported over on the Crackberry site also. It appears that some batteries and/or devices don't fit well together. Simply placing some folded paper or something similar, under the battery to keep it pushed snug up against the contacts fixed the problem for some people.
I was lucky, I guess, just had a few reboots (AT&T) and since the 10.1 update 3 weeks or more ago, I've had no problems at all with reboots.

  • Skype 5.7.0.13054 causing random crashes on older nexus 7?

I already suspected newest Android for this but seems that reinstalling Skype is the problem. To put it short, this is what I did to find out what goes wrong:Fastboot downgrade to KitKat, 4.4 somethingFactory reset and everything empty afreshAccepted upgrades to latest LollipopInstalled some of the apps I use but not Skype...was running nicely for week or so...Until I installed Skype:- ran out of battery (never seen this happen before) while not used but charge was around 50%- started having random reboots, one so far but that is now enough as quilty app was found So Skype is about to be uninstalled NOW. Would be nice to hear that there is a fix or analysis at least. And if I am the only one experiencing this then what is it? Clearly after Skype install. Going to look for alternative app probably from Google. Takes some time to convince others too as many friends use Skype. So it would be nice to have back the quality it had back in the old times. Gone for worse, sorry to say.

Hi, I have the same problem since yesterday, right after i accepted the Lollipop upgrade. I have a Samsung S6 edge. Please, tell me there is a solution or at least a way to downgrade the skype version. Ciao, L.

  • Yosemite random reboots on macbook mid 2012

Well I've read thoroughly all the posts related to this kind of issue and it seems it affects a wide range of devices. Either mac minis or 2011 macbooks and so on.
I would like to explain my experience and ask for any advice available. I am experienced with computers and OS's, even though I would not call myself an expert, but as an engineer I possess a certain amount of knowledge. So there it goes.
    TL;DR at the bottom
Macbook pro mid 2012 13". Default 4gb memory installed, I added a Samsung EVO 830 SSD in 2012 when I bought it, never had any problems with it.
After a couple of weeks after upgrading to yosemite (november '14) I started noticing the macbook resting on login screen after a reboot. No crash report, no message visible of any reason. As I was installing some special software to do some work related to a lab I was working at the time, I thought it was software related. MS Word and Excel often crashed and I had a couple of problems with other programs. Then it started doing it while I was working, so I decided to check things out. The system freezed for some seconds - 1-2 minutes and proceeded to reboot. Sometimes a hard reset had to be performed.
I decided to perform different installations with different options in order to identify the problem:
Reinstall Yosemite from recovery mode: same result, random reboot, no specific app in use, either Xcode, Safari, or just resting idle with just finder.
Format disk and install yosemite applying time machine backup: same result, random reboot, no specific app, and so on.
Format disk and clean install, manually installing the same main software installed previously: same result, random freezes and reboots.
Format disk and clean install, manually installing essential apps (mac app store only): same result, exactly the same result.
Always with the latest OS version available, and with TRIM enabled and disabled, to discard issues with it. PRAM and SMC resets all along.
During all the testing, the console has not shown any crash report or kernel panic related to the event. After every reboot, console would not show anything special before the boot_time line.
After looking for solutions on different forums, I noticed a pattern on some cases that implied a wake on lan or a handoff, or wifi issue. I tested on different networks, disabled and enabled all options commented, with no effect.
    Entering
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CSeq 'n Cause: -' | tail | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}'
on terminal 90% of the time returned errors -128, and some -112 or -2, but they would not be logged to every freeze, just some of them. By the time the
As they may indicate a hardware error, I decided to proceed with the warranty.I bought the Applecare extension when I bought the computer (expiring this summer) so I talked to Applecare about the issue. As there is not an official Apple Store in my town they pointed me to an ASP in my city. They noted all the issues I commented above, gave me a case number to deliver to the ASP so they would have all the information.
I brought the computer to the ASP, gave them the case number (which they totally ignored, the employee seemed oblivious to what a "case number" was) and expected them to find the error. As I noticed the freeze could be sometimes forced via waking up the laptop, I made them a demo. I had ran already the apple hardware test and any hardware tests I was aware of. Etrecheck came out without issues or anything worth mentioning, so I thought they might have specific apple tools to identify hardware error.
They told me they could not find any error on the computer, but that they found errors in the SSD, swapped it with one of theirs to test and no issues found. Good, I thought, at least they found the issue even though all tests run on the SSD by me did not show any trace of it. They charged me 25€ for the service as the SSD was not part of the original computer. As I had been experiencing issues for some time I did not care. I asked them for some kind of report to check the error to provide to the SSD manufacturer, Samsung, as they offer 3-year warranty on SSD's and it had not yet expired. The report said "errors in disk", plain and simple, I asked to talk to the technician for extra info, but he could not remember if it was "corrupted sectors" or something else.
Contacted Samsung, sent my SSD in, and in 4 days I had a new (refurb maybe) SSD same model same size at my door. During those 4 days I reinstalled my old  original HDD. As it had a few miles on it (using it as external disk) it was really slow and sometimes it would freeze but the whole system was always dragging, so it could be also failing. Worth mentioning that when swapping disks I noticed the ASP had messed up the position of the small screws on the back of the computer. They did not seem to know there are 4 shouldered screws and 3 regular ones.
I put the new or refurb SSD in, clean install and do some testings. First day everything ok. Proceed to install software. Seems ok. After a couple of days the first freeze and reboot appears. After a couple of PRAM and SMC zaps, events seem to be reduced to a minimum. Even though the system is not completely stable, and I am not quite satisfied with the uncertainty of the freezes (in the middle of a presentation is not the best moment to have one), as it's freezing 1-3 times per week I consider it reasonable.
Time goes on, freezes start to appear again. Sometimes while booting, sometimes on login screen, sometimes on heavy usage sometimes on idle. I still follow all threads related to similar issues, in case a fix appears. All sleep / wake / wifi on - off on sleep tests have been performed.
Now the issue seems to be reduced to two kind of events: random freezes and reboots, and errors while booting. None, and I mean zero of the reboots or freezes has ever had a .crash or any system diagnostic reports related to the hour or even date when the freezes took place. EVER.
While booting, it crashes and I have to hard reset 2-3 times. When freezing, 30% of the time it does not reboot, and gets warmer than idle state but cooler than under heavy load.
I usually zap pram and smc and then it boots normally. But I should not have to be doing that every time I turn it on.
I know its a long post, but it's something I have been following for 5 months now. It's not that I am unaware of different options to solve it. Zapping seems to be the way to go, but still the random freezes interrupt workflow and provoke loss of data.
TL;DR: same freeze and reboots as other people. No discrete GPU to relate it to. Default memory installed, SSD model working on 10.8 and 10.9 with zero issues. All software installation combinations tested. ZERO crash reports on console related to the hour or date of the events. Shutdown causes negative codes, ASP cannot find the issue.
Considering bringing it to Genius Bar, but undermines the purpose of a ASP and if they got the same tools they will not find the issue either.
Appelcare expires in June. Any options I am unaware of? I would relate it to the specific model of SSD under Yosemite if I was the only one experiencing freezes and reboots, which I am not.
    Thanks you

Boot into Safe Mode. If the problem ceases then you need to remove Virtual Box and the software that installed com.bluecoat.kext.bckd 4.4.1f20. If this does not fix the problem then make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service.
