Mac OS X 10.8 crashes after disconnecting the Thunderbolt display

Wondering if anyone can help my Mac OS X 10.8.5 crashes after I disconnect the thunderbolt display.
I normally work in the studio with my macbook connected to an external display.
When I go to use it without the thunderbolt display it crashes - 4 times in one day, which really isn't ideal when your freelancing.
I've checked my log files and I have a list of panic reports. I'm not too sure what I'm supposed to be looking for, but each of the reports refer to the graphics control. I've read online it might have something to do with the display sleep, so I've reset that.

I'd be very grateful if anyone could help

Hi Chloebat,
I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with your MacBook Pro. If you continue to have intermittent but persistent crashing issues with your Mac, possibly related to the display, you may find the troubleshooting steps outlined in the following article helpful:

  • After installing Mountain Lion my MacBookPro crashes after disconnecting from Cinema Display

Ever since I installed Mountain Lion on my 15" MacBookPro (early 2011 first with Tunderbolt connector) it crashes after disconnecting from Cinema display (this Cinema does not have Thunderbolt but mini display port). It woked fine under Lion.
This crash occurs in following situation:
MacBookPro is in closed clam shell operation. When Cinema display is still connected, I put MacBookPro into sleep. Then I disconnect Cinema display mini diplay connector from Thuderbotl port.
When I get home and open MacBookPro it is in deep kernel crash.
    It happens every time.
Any ideas how to fix this?
    Thanks

  • If I close my lid or disconnect my thunderbolt display my MBP freezes

My MBPr will freeze up if I disconnect the thunderbolt display or close the lid and re-open it. The one solution I have found is to put it into sleep before closing the lid or disconnecting the cable. I have tried to fix the issue using multiple methods described in other posts.
What I have tried so far. (I have reset the options after it not fixing the issue)
    1. Disable "Put the hard drive to sleep when possible."
    2. Disable Automatic Graphics Switching
I closed the lid and copied the console report after the issue arose. See below.

    Try a SMC reset:

If no success, then use your warranty and bring it in to the nearest Apple repair facility for rectifying this problem.
    Ciao.

  • Macbook crash on sleep after disconnection from cinema display

    Hello,
I bought a black macbook core 2 duo a few months back as a replacement for a 1.5 GHz 12" powerbook G4, and I'm beginning to wonder if I made a terrible mistake as the Macbook frequently crashes on sleep which has caused a major disruption to the way I use my computer.
My work pattern involves pulling the computer out of its bag and opening it for between a few minutes and a couple of hours, before putting it back to sleep by closing it and shoving it back in its bag again, usually in a hurry, and usually several times each day. If I'm working at my desk, I pull it out of its bag, plug a keyboard, mouse and cinema display into it before waking it in lid-closed mode via the keyboard or mouse. I later sleep it via the power key, before immediately disconnecting the cables and putting it back in its bag.
The powerbook used to cope with this admirably, sometimes for two months at a stretch between restarts, and always with many applications and windows open. I had learned to expect that when I open the lid of my computer everything is there just as I left it, and more importantly that I didn't need to worry about saving everything before closing the lid.
The Macbook frequently crashes on sleep (regardless of whether I close the lid, use the key or menu or leave it until it sleeps itself), and have I narrowed it down to something that usually happens on one of the first few sleeps after I disconnect the cinema display. The macbook's backlight goes out on sleep but the display does not switch off (it can be seen, frozen as it was, if a light is shone on the display) nor the hard disk spin down, and the only response of any sort I can get is I can switch the white LED on and off by opening and closing the lid. This behaviour has always been the same regardless of whether safe sleep is enabled or not, although I have disabled safe sleep as I do not have the time or inclination to sit around waiting for 15 seconds for the disk to stop spinning each time I close the lid.
My question is, is there something wrong with my computer or is this normal for Macbooks where an external display is used? And if it is normal for macbooks is it something that is likely to resolve itself with future MacOs or firmware updates, or is it more fundamental than that?

    Hello again,
It is hard to suggest something to do in this case, since intermittent issues are really difficult to diagnose. If I were you, I might try doing an Archive and Install from the install dvd that came with your macbook, as well as verifying the drive using Disk Utility on the install dvd. These are just suggestions and I don't know if they will change anything, but at least Apple may get more info out of knowing these were done to try and resolve the issue. If Archiving and Installing doesn't fix the problem (an OS software problem) and disk utility doesn't report any problems, it most likely warrants a trip to Apple. You definitely shouldn't have to put up with worrying about whether your computer will work or not every time you close the lid.

    Hello:
You will need to delete the keyboard from the other Mac.  Simply disconnecting it leaves it still paired with the first Mac.

  • My 160gb crashes after disconnect.

My 160gb crashes after disconnect if I load more than about 9,000 songs. I have plenty of storage space left.

Once the Apple logo appears, the iPod should recover by itself.
If not, try a Reset; turn the Hold switch on, then off again and then press-and-hold the Menu and the Select (centre) buttons for at least ten seconds. At some point, the screen should go blank again, the Apple logo should appear and it could take several minutes before the iPod becomes ready and can be used.
If this fails, it maybe time to visit an Apple store. Make an appointment with the Geniusbar in the Store by using this page; http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/

  • Macbook Pro dark screen after disconnecting from Cinema Display

    Dear all,
    the issue I am having:
    - after disconnecting from Cinema display (having first put my Macbook Pro in "sleep" mode) I just ca't make the Macbook pro scren show anything....black display
    - but is it really asleep? NO!!! It just STILL believes it's connected to the Cinema Display
That's what I though was happening, so I thought: "if I now plug in the thunderbolt-to-VGA dongle that I use for the videoprojector then the screen might come back... and.... Voilá! It comes back, BUT starts flickering until in the end it just dissappears....
I can reproduce the error all the time. Worse than that: a reboot does not help at all.
Looks like there is an internal hardware switch that must be left "engaged" and then the Mac just believes it is connected to an External screen and sends the signal though the thuderbolt port instead of through the screen!!!
    WEIRD error/bug or whatever!!
I have no idea how to make this reach the Apple guys.... I tried to report a Bug but they asked me to join in as Apple developer which I just can't do (for working issues).
Can anyone tell me if they have had this problem, and whether Apple is taking care of it?
(this reminds me of an issue with an internal switch with the headphones in my old MacBook Pro.... after disconnecting the headphones, the internal switch was not being disengaged, so sound would NEVER come out as it was being sent to the headphones instead of to the speakers... Same problem here but with the Image??? :-((( )
    Thanks a lot.

Sometimes I experience the same after disconnecting my 24" display (in seldom cases, the mouse cursor is not painted correctly, as well).
Can you check - when it happens - if in System Profiler > Hardware > Graphic > Quartz Extreme is listed as 'supported'. I found it to be 'not supported' when the scrolling and display behaves strangly. Also the Menu Bar is not transparent any more.
Next to rebooting, logout and login again fixed the issue for me. But I am also looking for a better fix/explanation.

  • MacBook Pro scrolling choppy after disconnecting from Cinema Display

Hi, I keep my 2.5 GHz 4GB RAM MBP in clamshell mode most of the time, connected to a 30-inch Cinema Display. When I pick it up and open it, scrolling in every application is super choppy and slow, and won't correct unless I reboot the computer. This is aggravating. Anyone have a fix? Thanks in advance!

  • My iPhoto keeps crashing after installing the latest update, can't do anything!

My iPhoto keeps crashing after installing the latest update, can't do anything! It used to crash when importing but now I'm at the point where I open the software and after 2 seconds it crashes (nothing connected either). What to do? Can't access any photos

Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If you can create a new library and import some test photos then the problem lies with your original library.
If that's the case make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If iPhoto crashes while trying to create a new library then try this:
Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
If that fails to help a reinstall of iPhoto is indicated. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and from the /var/db/receipts/  folder,
Then install iPhoto from the disk it came on originally and apply all relavant updaters.
P.S.  If you're still running Tiger, 10.4.6, then the above may not apply.  If you're running a newer system you should update your profile so we have a better idea of where you're at.

  • IMovie is crashing after creating the large movie for YouTube.

    Hey Guys!
So, I have been uploading to YouTube from iMovie for several years now and today I uploaded again as I usually do. The problem was that about 30 seconds before the end of my video it went black on YouTube! I deleted it off YouTube and reuploaded but it happened again! So, thinking that it was something on YouTube's end I deleted it but the next time I tried to upload, iMovie gave me this error message: "The project could not be prepared for publishing because an error occurred. (Not enough room in heap zone / )"
Now when I try to upload, iMovie crashes after creating the large movie to upload to YouTube!
I have restarted my computer, deleted items to create extra space on my disk, and ejected my iPhone so nothing else happens while I'm trying to create the large movie.
Does anyone have an idea of what is happening and how to fix it?
    Thank you!

I'm having a similar problem with Imovie 11.  I wonder if the problem is in the new Mountain Lion update.  Fortunatly, I cloned the drive befor installing the update.  I've cloned this drive back to the original startup drive and gotten back to IMovie.

I updated my mac 10.8 to mavericks but after installation the app store ask for the same software update again..i have a slow connection..i cannot install it again and again..what should i do?

In case you are not aware, Mavericks requires a high speed broadband connection.
In the event you need to restore or repair the starutp disk, OS X Recovery also requires a broadband connection as noted here >  About OS X Recovery
You can check your download speed here > Speedtest.net
15Mbps or less, you may not be able to install Mavericks or use OS X Recovery.

  • High CPU load after waking with Thunderbolt Display connected

I have a Mid-2013 MacBook Air 13" with Apple Thunderbolt Display connected. I use this setup mostly in a clamshell mode. Recently I've updated to OS X Mavericks. After that I've noticed that one of the cores is occupied by kernel_task to 100% after waking up from sleep. I've managed to isolate that to Apple Thunderbolt Display connected, without display there is a short CPU spike, but it comes down to normal levels in a couple of seconds.
I've tried resetting SMC to no success. MacBook doesn't enter Safe Mode either (progress bar goes up to approx. 30% and it goes to reboot). Probably it's because of the Thunderbolt Display, I'm not really sure.
That's not really a problem as this load doen't seem to impact CPU temp (fans are not spinning faster) and more of a activity monitor display glitch (?).
    Does anyone here encounter this?

    Hey Max,
I also have one CPU core on my Air'13 to run 100% after a wake-up for about 1 minute (kernel_task).
It is annoyingly like this after I upgraded to Maverics. Notice, I don't have a Thunderbolt monitor, just a laptop, no periphery.
