MAC OS X.4.8 - G4 - dual HD.

so i have the dual HD 75GB each.
the main one only 1.01 GB left; thus am not able to update softwares.
the 2nd one has 60GB left (been using it more for data storage-documents)
how do i transfer the files (applications et al.) to the 2nd HD? without getting into startup erros et al.
thanks
hai

Maybe it´s time to trash it?
What? The computer? I don't think so, but if you do, send it to me. I can use a parts locker.
Try these: zap the PRAM (restart holding down the CMDOPT+PR keys until you get at least three bongs). Then, try booting with the disks. If that doesn't work, boot into Open Firmware (restart holding down the CMDOPT+OF keys). When the text stops scrolling, enter these commands, one at a time, followed by the return key:
reset-nvram
set-defaults
reset-all
The last one reboots the machine. Then, try booting with the disks.

I have a Mac OSX 10.5.8 processor dual 2 ghz powerpc g5 what is the next update for that?

There is none. You are at the end for a PPC machine. To upgrade you need to purchase an Intel Mac.
Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

  • Mac Pro Mountain Lion Kernel Panic Dual Video Cards

I've been getting constant panics since upgrading to Mountain lion on my 2009 Mac Pro.
Worth noting is I have dual GT 120 Video Cards and dual 30" LCDs.  Every panic seems to be caused by com.apple.NVDAResman
This computer has been rock solid since 2009 and only after "updating" to Mountain Lion has it become unstable.
Was hoping 10.8.1 and 10.8.2 would fix the issued, but neither have.  It's worse than ever.  Crashing every day.
Already reinstalled the OS, tested the RAM, etc.  No change.  Still crashes everyday.
What should I do?  It's really eating into productivity...

    I have the same problem

  • Mac mini with 10.6 installed - dual boot 10.8?

    Hi all
    I have an a Mac mini with 10.6.8 installed (think it came with 10.5) and would like to buy Mountain Lion from the Apple Store and install it as a dual boot setup. I think the hardware is too old for 10.10 (although it does give me the option to download it from the App store). I would like to keep my existing install and install 10.8 either alongside 10.6 or on a separate partition. Couple of questions;
Can I shrink the partition that contains my existing 10.6 install (there is plenty of space on the disk), create another partition and install 10.8 onto it?
Failing that can I install 10.8 alongside 10.6 on the same partition (like we used to do for OS9 and OSX)?
For 10.8 I will be receiving a "content code" for the Mac App Store - once I download the files and start the install presumably the Mac will restart and I will get access to the usual install utilities (without the OS running)?
    Many thanks for any help.

If your computer will run Mountain Lion, it will run Yosemite.
    1. Yes.
    2. I would go with 2 partitions.
    Yes.
Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
    Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space
Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.

    Applications Compatibility (2)
    Do a backup before installing.

  • Doe's the reconfigured mac mini with the 3.0GHz Dual Core i7, with 3.5GHz Turbo Boost, run at 7200 rpm?

    Hello there.
Doe's the reconfigured mac mini with the fourth generation 3.0 GHz Dual Core i7 with 3.5GHz Turbo Boost, with 1TB Fusion Drive, run at 7200rpm?
    Thanks.

Historically Apple have generally used 5400rpm hard disk drives and while the detailed information on the Apple store does not definitively say what speed hard disk the 1TB Fusion drive includes, it does make mention of testing conducted with a 5400rpm drive.
Therefore I think we can safely assume it does come with a 5400rpm 1TB hard disk. However this is not necessarily as bad as it sounds, the whole point of a Fusion drive is to automatically off-load the most commonly used files to the much faster 128GB SSD portion of the Fusion drive so overall you should get performance better than even a 7200rpm hard disk.
Finally, as far as I can see for the Mac mini it does not matter which speed model you buy they will all come with the same 1TB drive model if you chose a 1TB capacity, so the 3.0GHz Dual Core i7, 2.8GHz Dual Core i7, and 2.6GHz Dual Core i5 will all have a 5400rpm 1TB hard disk.

  • Installing mac os x on an existing dual-booted laptop (with windows/linux)

    Hey everybody,
I am wondering if any of you have advice for the best way of going about installing a version of the Mac operating system on my Dell laptop, considering that I already have Windows and Linux (SuSE) in a dual-boot environment, and an Intel Pentium 4-M processor (which I think is x86?)...
I've looked at the Mac store and it looks like OS X Tiger is only for PPC processors. Is there a way to get it to run on my processor?
The reason I am doing this is that I really want to test a website I am developing on Mac browsers, like Safari and IE on Mac, but I can't afford to buy a new Mac system (nor do I really want to, since I use this one computer for everything).
Also, would the Mac installer be able to partition my drive for me automatically?
    Thanks!
    Stephen

Just make your web site standards compliant and we'll be fine.
The only trouble we'd have is if you started coding your sites chock-full of Microsoft ActiveX garbage.
And don't bother coding your web site to function on IE for Mac. Most Mac users are smart enough to not use a dead web browser which hasn't been supported or updated in years. Microsoft ended its life long ago.

  • Mac air freezing or jumpy when dual monitor

    Hi there,
I'm working with a PC and a Mac at the same time. Sometimes I need to have the Mac dual screen and sometimes I need the PC to be dual screen, so I have a monitor with two inputs (Samsung S22C200), with the Mac plugged into the DVA port and the PC plugged into the RGB/VGA port. when I
The problem is, when I am displaying the PC on the monitor, the Mac will become very 'jumpy' as in, the will freeze for about 4 seconds in every 6, which is really annoying. I suppose the Mac doesn't like its monitor being extended into empty space. There are no problems with the PC. Has anyone else encountered such a problem, and does anyone know how to solve it?
    Many thanks,
    Alistair

Does the Acer have automatic input selection? When the computer goes to sleep, there is no DVI signal,so the display may switch inputs, so not immediately notice when the DVI signal returns when the computer wakes. While switch to the other input, some displays to not provide resolution information on the DVI port, so when the computer wakes, it thinks the display has gone, and may switch to a default resolution. If the display switches back to the DVI port, it will then see the wrong resolution. The graphics card, though, is now seeing the ressolution information from the display, and may change to match. It may take a while for things to settle. Can you set the ACER to stay on the DVI port? If not, a DVI Detective may help.

  • Intel Mac Mini vs. PowerMac G4 Dual?

Does anyone have any experience of how the new Intel Mac Mini fairs against a dual processor G4 PowerMac? I'm thinking of buying a Mac Mini to replace my 1.25Ghz G4.
I'm not fussed about the non-universal apps as the primary use will be for iLife and the "standard" Mac apps.
    Any feedback would be welcome.
    Thanks people.

I tested both single and dual core Intel minis a couple of weeks ago, and they both outperformed my Dual 867, and the dual core model got very close to the performance of my Rev A G5 dual 2.0 running iMovie 6.
In terms of performance in native software, I'd expect both Intel minis to outperform a dual 1.25 G4 on almost all tasks - the only exception might be between the G4 and single core mini in tasks which are highly processor intensive, where the dual G4s might still win out, or on disc-intensive work (meaning opening or saving something like very large photoshop files rather than streaming DV in iMovie) where the mini's drive speed would still represent a bit of a possible bottleneck.
I was quite impressed by the Intel units, particularly in iMovie where my G4 minis tend to be a bit laggy as projects grow, but even the single core mini was much more responsive.

  • ATI 9600 Pro Mac & PC Ed. - Which is the Dual Link DVI Port?

I just bought an ATI Radeon 9600 Pro Mac & PC edition Video Card:
    http://www.ati.com/products/radeon9600/radeon9600propcmac/index.html
This card features 2 DVI ports - one of them dual link.
Maybe I'm just blind, but I've been looking around everywhere trying to figure out which DVI port is the dual link. Does anyone know?
    Any help will be appreciated.

There is a small "1" stamped in the sheet metal next to the single link DVI connector, and a small "2" next to the dual link DVI connector. The single link is closer to the motherboard.
There should be a PDF Users Guide on the Mac CD that came with the board. Page 17 shows the connectors.

  • Mac partition dont work on my dual boot imac

Since some days my mac partition wont start up. The windows partition works fine. Recovery dont work. Not even in save mode. I have upgraded my mac to lion from the original snow leopard install. al worked fine until some days ago. No rinstall with the original disks or restore/repare. Starting up with the snow leopard dvd the screen shows disk utityties but selecting them takes forever. already tried diferent startup posibilities (puschin different keys) but nothing helps. I dont need to recover the old installation, i have everyting in backup, but want to reinstall at least my mac os. Anyone? I suspect a automated disk utility in windows to have damaged my mac partition. My Imac is 2 years old.

It sounds like the TV you are plugging it into, can't handle the 1280x1024 resolution. You may just have to deal with the 1024x768 res.

  • Mac Pro 4,1 intermittently horrible dual display performance

I'm running two Apple 20" Cinema Displays on a quad 2.66 MP 4,1. Lion 10.7.5, 8gb ram. Stock NVIDIA GeForce GT 120
I'm getting serious graphic slowdowns but can't determine what circumstances are triggering it. Things will be running fine after starting up for a while, but eventually it all goes down the toile. Just now I watched part of an HD QT movie in a Finder preview window, with the window max'ed, worked great. Then I opened in QT and suddenly it is super choppy, maybe 6-8fps. Went back to try it in Finder again and still stuttering.
I mainly use this MP running Pro Tools and will have the same problem. For the first one to several hours things will run fine, and then at some point it all gets choppy and the UI response is horrible. This will then be true across whatever programs (browser videos, etc).
I'd ask if I just need a better graphics card, but that in and of itself doesn't explain why it will run fine for a while and then suddenly take a nosedive.
Any ideas? I would appreciate any help.

    Thanks for the reply.
I have Activity Monitor open all the time to keep an eye on things. When the graphics slowdown happens there is still plenty of free RAM and CPU. I will watch more closely but haven't seen any difference in activity between when graphics are smooth and when they are bogged down.

  • Mac Mini Dual Core vs PowerMac DP G4

I am considering purchasing a Mac Mini Dual Core to replace my PowerMac DP 1.25Ghz G4 . I'm worried whether I will be happy , and if it will be faster than my G4. The app's I run most are univeral binary or will be soon , so I'm thinking , yes. But I would feel more comfortable if I could get some solid input from some power Mac user's experienced or knowledgeable with the new Mac Mini
PowerMac DP 1.25 Ghz , 1.5GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   Dual 80GB Seagate Barracuda drives

I can't imagine that an Intel Mac mini would ever be "faster" than a dual-processor G4 tower for most operations. The comparisons that Apple advertises, like "4X faster" are all against single-processor PowerPC Macs. Mac OS X does a good job at managing dual PowerPC processors.
Although the new Intel Mac mini now has a faster system bus, you're MUCH more limited by the use of portable-size hard drives (for example, your PowerMac probably has over a 100GB drive to start with and could have 500GB without much cost). If you want to max-out the RAM on the new Intel Mac mini to 2GB, it will cost you $300 more. So, a 1.66GHz Core Duo Mac mini with a 120GB hard drive and 2GB of RAM is $1,224.00 (US). If I were you, I would, without question, keep the PowerMac and invest in a newer Super Drive and/or hard drive(s) before giving it up.

  • Mac mini w/ dual layer super drive?

I assume because the apple store does not state that the mac mini's super drives support dual layer discs that they are only compatible with single layer discs. Can anyone confirm this?
    Ryan

I had ordered a similar model directly from the Switzerland online Apple Store, but with Toast 6 Titanium instead of Capty, and this part of my order has been cancelled for an unknown reason - I mean they cannot ship it anymore, but they can't say why.that is why, Roxio started shipping Toast 7 (interesting new features! e.g. "squeezing"/Popcorn= making dual layer dvds fit on one single layer dvd-r; customizing bitrates=more then 120min on one sl dvd-r…) I don't advertise, but have a look on their website)… no more official sale of Toast 6…
as a registered user, I got a mail from them with an early adopter bonus… which is for US costumers only … welcome to the age of iNet and international business…
    just a word:
why do you need dual layer dvds? for data storage fine, but my audience falls asleep after 20min of homebrewn movies… ok, for HighDefTV dl is maybe needed…
    and:
most standalone-dvd players are NOT compatible with dl dvd-r media… to my (and some others) experience… ???

  • How to dual book linux on a mac

I am looking for the graphics and word processing of a mac book pro or mac air but I need to dual book linux, specifically ubuntu or backtrack. Is there a way to do this and how? Thanks

If you were asking this on 10.6 Snow Leopard I could lay it out for you,  but 10.7 that comes with a new machine makes it even more difficult to dual boot Linux and the rEFIt program required to do so hasn't been updated in two years.
It's best to run Linux on it's own hardware now and if your going to run Backtrack you should have the computer competence not to ask such newbie questions. If you did have the skills you would want Backtrack on it's own cheap disposable hardware anyway.
Apple is locking down it's machines, turning OS X into iOS X, the walled garden approach to computing, this makes Mac's unsuitable for running other operating systems like Linux or even most Windows.
If you want a Mac, get a Mac. Then get a Linux PC for Linux.
