Mac OS X automatically hiding windows?

This has been going on for awhile now, and I am getting really sick of it. First of all, whenever I click on an icon in the dock, other icons of apps that were open become transparent and their corresponding window vanishes. The only way that I can have two windows open at the same time is if I hold the Option Key while clicking another icon, or pressing Command+Tab. This is really ticking me off. There is a screenshot of my problem: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3199/31334029940aa2c6b75fb.jpg. You can see that the arrows are pointing to the icons that are more transparent than the others (iTunes, Adium, and Cyberduck). I have no applications that I know of that hide windows automatically (ie: Autohide, Spirited Away etc.). I created another user account, and this problem does not affect that one. Any help is greatly appreciated.

That plist file is in your /Library/Preferences folder (these preferences are for all users). The file I was speaking of is in your "home" folder - the one with your username on it. These preferences are just for your specific account. SInce you created a different account and that one didn't have problems, this means the bad files or whatever are likely somewhere in your home account.
If you kill the dock with Activity Monitor it will just quit the dock and then relaunch it. A fresh preference file will be created if there is nothing in the Preferences folder.

  • Mac Pro boots automatically into windows anyone else?

Installed bootcamp and now if I hit restart it boots into windows automatically
Called apple and the tech just said he had no idea. and thats weird
I have selected the mac Hd as the boot up, but if I don't hit the option key it will go straight into windows.
Anyone else have this and can solve it for me?

You must be careful about what USB devices you plug into the keyboard. A mouse would be okay but you have to realise that the keyboard is an unpowered USB device and cannot power other devices, well anything needing more than a few milliamps anyway. So running sound sticks from the keyboard is not a good idea and the Mac should have thrown up a warning that it could not provide sufficient power to those speakers. Generally the USB ports on a keyboard are not much use for anything except a mouse or a dongle that some software suppliers demand be used to authenticate their software's legitimate use.

How can I disable the automatic hiding of known file attachments, and why are always about 10 internet pages where I have to download something when I use mozila firefox?
    Windows Computer

    1) If you are talking about the file names on the computer, there is a
setting to turn off known file types. Open your file browser. Then
just under the location bar, press '''Tools,''' then '''Folder Options.'''
A new window will open. Select '''View.''' Look for
'''Hide Extensions For Known File Types.'''
    2) Never NEVER '''NEVER''' download anything unless you know what
it is. If a web site claims it needs to download something, what is it?
It could be something like the flash player, '''or a virus ! !'''

  • Mac Pro Will only Load windows 7. Cannot get to Mac OS install boot

Ok so I've had this problem going on for sometime now. My Mac Pro will not load Mac OS. When I try the computer shuts down and I have to remove the HD that mac os is installed on. Then the computer will automatically boot into windows and i can reset the bootcamp auto load to windows. I was wondering if anyone here might know how to reset the hardware or firmware so that I can just wipe everything and install mac Os fresh.

The Mac OS drive has a corrupt directory most likely.
If you set the default OS to Mac OS X and pull Windows drive, what happens?

  • MAC Pro wakes automatically at 8:00 p.m. local time no matter what I do

MAC Pro purchased November 2008 wakes up automatically every day at exactly 8:00 p.m. local time (was 7:00 p.m. before daylight savings happened last month). It has been doing this since purchase. Even if I turn it off (i.e., not just sleep mode) it starts up automatically at this time; in fact, even if I turn the power bar off after turning off the MAC, when next day I turn on the power bar, the MAC starts up automatically immediately, as if it was waiting to do so.
    Attempted fixes so far:
    * went to Energy Saver Preferences and made sure MAC not set to turn on automatically; changed settings and also set them to sleep at, for example, 8:01. No effect.
    * checked that Blue Tooth is turned off.
    * reset "the" PROM (I assume there is only one).
    * explicitly trashed com.apple.Autowake.plist and com.apple.PowerManagement.plist, then changed Energy Saver Preferences, saying wakeup every day then leaving them set with no wakeup, then shut down computer. No effect; MAC woke up on 8:00 schedule as before.
    * Changed my Security Preferences to Require password to wake this computer and Disable automatic logon. Now the MAC comes up automatically at 8:00 p.m. to the password entry window, but it still comes up that far automatically.
    Configuration:
    Model Name: Mac Pro
    Model Identifier: MacPro3,1
    Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 2
    Total Number Of Cores: 8
L2 Cache (per processor): 12 MB
    Memory: 10 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.6 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: MP31.006C.B05
    SMC Version: 1.25f4
Have 3 750GB Seagate internal drives plus the standard 350GB (?) Apple drive. Using one of the Seagate drives as my OS drive (10.5.4).
If anyone can suggest what I might try to solve this, I would be very grateful. I'm wondering if maybe my SMC or ROM version is wrong (it seems to me to likely be a firmware issue, but I really don't know of course; not sure what MAC Model to use to check whether I have the most current versions -- "MAC Pro" or "MAC Pro - 8 core" or "MAC Pro - 2008"...).

There was an update I thought to fix this, but if you really have not updated to 10.5.6, try that.
The bug has something to do with GMT and setting the wake time to something, like a time when you would normally have it on and using it, like 12 noon, can also work.
And of course plugging "Mac GMT startup" into Google leads to an Apple technote:

  • Stop Skype from starting automatically on Windows 7

Hello, I have seen some information regarding how to stop Skype from starting automatically on Macs, but for Windows 7, I have yet to see any information. If someone could provide me an answer as to how to stop Skype from opening as soon as I start my computer, that would be great. Thanks.

  • My Mac doesn't detect my windows DVD for bootcamp, help?

hi , i just grab my Windows 7 DVD for installing windows on Mac using bootcamp , but my mac doesn't detect my windows installation disc in boot menu... how to resolve?

You're not alone - I'm installed Windows (8 Pro 64-bit) on a MacBook Air Mid 2013 yesterday from the OEM/system builder media, and Boot Camp Assistant 5.0.4 didn't recognize the DVD. It asked for an .iso disk image instead, and I created one in a UNIX geek way**, but if you're an average mac user, you'll want to create one using the Disk Utility:
    1) Open the Disk Utility. This is in the Utilities folder (go to a finder window and type command-shift-u)
    2) Click on your DVD to select it.
    3) In the File menu, select New -> Disk Image from "HRM_CCSA_X64FRE_EN-US_DV5"… (or your Windows disk title)
    4) In the Save sheet, select Image Format: DVD/CD master. The Disk Utility saves this with the file extension/type .cdr, but this is the same file format as .iso. When the Disk Utility has finished, find the file you save and change the file extension to .iso.
    5) Launch Boot Camp Assistant and select the .iso file as the source of your Windows installation.
Since I have a MacBook Air, the windows source was copied by the Boot Camp Assistant to a USB flash drive. MacOS X restarted and Windows was installed automatically, but the Boot Camp driver installer wasn't automatically launched at the end of the Windows install. I opened the flash drive's BootCamp folder and double clicked setup.exe.
Voila! The best trackpad anywhere! Network! Sound! Brightness control from the keyboard! The best Windows 8 computer!
** In Terminal: diskutil list; diskutil unmount /Volumes/HRM_CCSA_X64FRE_EN-US_DV5; sudo dd if=/dev/disk2 of=win8pro.iso. Use the output of 'diskutil list' to match your Windows 8 CD/DVD to a disk# for the 'dd' command. Be very careful.

why does my boot camp on my mac pro ask for a windows 7 disk?  Can I just install my vista home premium in and proceed?

Lion and Mountain Lion can only install 7 under BootCamp.
You can load Vista under a VM (virtual machine) such as Parallels or VMWare Fusion or VirtualBox (Oracle ownload).

If you use Windows program to partition the Hard Drive, the Apple partition gets destroyed.
