Mac os x base system on same volume, can't access

Something happened to my mac book and when I booted up went straight to disk utilities.
Updated os x to Lion but can't reinstall.
Tried to reinstall original osx but failed so erased volume but installed mac os x base system on the same volume. only have 1 volume now and its locked, can create parttion or reinstall or anything.
Restarting only takes me back to disk utilities and restore disk can't access drive and its now locked.
New help fixing this big mess please.

  • Lost my mac and had to format PC. How can I access all my data?

I setup Firefox sync on a macbook some time ago (I don't remember exactly when). I then added a PC laptop about a year ago and the 2 were syncronising perfectly. Unfortunately, a few weeks ago, my mac laptop was stolen so I was left with only the PC. I have just been forced to format the PC due to numerous problems but assumed that I would be able to reinstall Firefox and re-sync all my bookmarks, etc.
However, on trying to connect to Sync, it kept giving me an account error and saying that it couldn't connect. I wanted to reset the password but saw that it would have deleted all the data on the server so didn't do this. I then tried to add a new account which it appeared to let me do using the same email address I had used before but I still don't have access to my bookmarks, etc. The mac had been backed up onto an external hard drive using Time Machine but until I can replace the mac, I am unable to access the hard drive as it is not readable by the PC system.
I'm desperate not to lose many years of bookmarks, I would have backed everything up separately had I known this was going to be an issue.
If anyone is able to help, give me any advice, suggestions, etc, I would be most grateful! Many thanks in advance!

Sorry, going to create a "new" account using the same username (email address) deleted your data from the Sync servers the same as if you had requested a new Password.
My advice is to ask a Mac-owner friend for help by the friend connecting that external drive to their Mac and accessing your Time Machine backups and then copying that data to a USB Flash stick. Either all your backup data, which you can pick thru; or have the friend look specifically for your Firefox bookmark related files.
'''places.sqlite''' = file where bookmarks are stored
    '''bookmarks-''yyyy''-''mm''-''dd''-###.json''' = bookmarksbackup files
''[year-month-day-count number of bookmarks in the file]''

  • The icloud icon is no longer showing up in my system preferences and I can't access it

I can't get to my desktop on my network and thought it might be a problem with the icloud. So I went to system preferences and the icloud icon is no longer there, although the mobile me icon IS showing... so, I don't know what's wrong!

Thanks, I guess I'm confused, because it WAS showing up on my ipad. My main problem is that my Mac desktop icon is no longer showing up on my home network and I cn't acess it from my laptop (share screen)... although I was able to access my desktop a few days ago. Can you help me with that? Thanks again!

  • HP DV6700 Operating System Not Found- How Can I Access & Back Up Files?

    1. HP Pavillon DV6700 -> old yes, I know
    2. Operating System: Vista
    3. Black Screen -> Err2Err3 Operating System Not Found
I ran the Primary Hard Drive Self Test > Hard Disk Self Test and it was a quick test. After it finished it came back with "#10009- Replace Hard Disk"
My question is: I've been tring to make this laptop last for as long as possible (obviously considering I was still using Vista). I plan to trash this laptop, but I need to know somehow, some way to access my files. There are pictures and essays that I absolutely need and I didn't do any back up in the last 2 months.
    Please any suggestions!

Yes use a usb to SATA adapter:
    http://www.amazon.com/Patuoxun-Converter-Adapter-Cable-Drive/dp/B008ASF5MC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=13...
That one is very inexpensive on amazon.com. Connect the SATA hard drive to the adapter (after removing the drive from the laptop) and plug the usb connectors into two usb ports on any other computer running XP or greater. The laptop drive will (if you are lucky) mount as a lettered drive on the host computer and you can copy and paste files off the drive with Windows Explorer file browser.

What Mac are you running iTunes on? iTunes 7 is no longer supported. iTunes 8 is the latest version that will run on a G3 but that too won't access the Store. If it's later than a G3 you can get iTunes 9 to run in 10.4.11 and you can access the Store.

  • Blinking question mark folder with only OS X base system left

Yesterday I turned my laptop on to see a blinking question mark folder. I searched through a lot of people questions with the same problem however mine is not the same because I only have the OS X base system left. I can't redownload the OS X lion because there is nothing to download it after I chose the option to redownload it. I see that most people have the Macintosh HD but I don't have anything like that.

         Mac OS X Base System
that's all I see when I try the repair option?

Have you tried booting to your Recovery HD (if you are running Lion or Mountain Lion?) If not and if you were running Lion or Mountain Lion, then:
Question (?) Mark, Blinking Folder, or Gray Screen at Startup
These are related but not identical issues. Their causes are outlined in Intel-based Mac- Startup sequence and error codes, symbols. Solutions may be found in:
A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
Mac OS X- Gray screen appears during startup
In most cases the problems may be caused by:
Problem with the computer's PRAM - See Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM.
Boot drive's directory has been corrupted - Repair with Disk Utility.
Critical system files are damaged or deleted - Reinstall OS X.
The disk drive is physically non-functional - Replace the hard drive.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
The main difference if you are using Lion or Mountain Lion is that you must first boot from the Recovery HD:
    Boot From The Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstall Snow Leopard Without Erasing The drive

    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing The Drive

Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Base system

OK. I did some research but was unable to find exacly what I need.
I was trying install a clean copy of Mountain Lion OS, but instead of just erasing the Macintosh HD using the disk utility (restarted pressing Command + R), I went ahead and restored The Mac OS X Base System into the Macintosh HD.
As a result I now have only the Mac OS Base System occupying 1.42GB out of the 500GB I have. In other words, instead of 2 partitions, it is now only one of 500gb. I tried to create a new one or re-dimention it, but it seems protected (grayed out).
When I try to reinstall the OS from the internet, it shows this partition available, but when I click on it it says it is protected.
I tried also to boot pressing the option key. It shows 3 options: The same Mac OS X Base System, the Recovery and the Optical DVD installation.
The first one doesn't do anything. The second is the same thing as the command + R option. The third doesn't load and beeps 3 times over and over.
    Can anyone help?

Ok. I managed to solve the problem.
For those in the future who need help with this problem (any problem regarding not being able to modify the original partition) this is what you need to do.
You can´t delete, redimention, format or re-install the base system. This is pretty much because you are using the disk you are attempting to modify. In other words, the recovery disk which you are using is located on the same partition as the one you are trying to install the OS.
To fix this, you need to:
Access this link and download Apple recovery disk to flash drive: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4848
Prepare the flash drive as described in the link (1GB or more)
    Restart your computer
From start up (sincle the begining of the rebooting) press the option key
Wait for the recovery screen to show up
Go on disk utility and erase the partition  Machintosh HD and whatever other partition you need to delete on your computer HD (I had coppied the recovery to that partition which was preventing me from doing the whole thing)
Recreate whatever partition you need. I created a Machintosh HD and a Base System OS X (second one with 1.52GB on it and the first one with whatever was left, ap´proximatelly 497.5GB). I also took this time to copy the flash drive to this second partition, that way I would have the recovery on the HD again.
Apply changes. This will format and prepare the partitions.
Close the disk assistant and chose install the software. This will allow you to log in your account and install directly from Apple´s servers.
This means you will download the whole OS. A clean copy will be installed.
    Good luck to all.

  • Can I access apps purchased on Mac App Store from my iPad or iPhone?

I recently purchased an application from the Mac App Store on my MacBook Pro. Can I access this app from my iPad and iPhone? it does not come up as an app in iTunes.

You will have to purchase the iPad and iPhone versions separately as the Mac version will not work on IOS devices.  Some apps work on both phone and iPad so they may not have to be purchased individually, but only IOS apps work on phones and tablets.

  • SYSTEM CRASHED BOOTED INTO MAC OSX BASE SYSTEM WEBKIT HELP!!!!

MY SYSTEM CRASHED AFTER AN UPDATE. RAN A BACK TRACE LOG BECAUSE A GREY SCREEN BOOTED UP WITH ONLY SAFARI INSIDE. BACK TRACE LOG SHOWED A WEBKIT SAFARI OS X INSTALLED AND HAVE PERMISSIONS OVER MY STARTUP DISK REPLACING IT WITH THEIR "MAC BASE OS X SYSTEM" AS WELL AS MY RECOVERY HD TOO. HOWEVER I AM ABLE TO GET INTO DISK UTIL AND REPAIRED MY HD AND RECOVERY HD HOWEVER THE OTHER IS STILL THERE AND WILL NOT LET ME ERASE IT. IT STATES IN INFO OF THE DRIVE "NOT ALLOW OWNERS TO TURN OFF...YES". I AM IN THE SAFARI BROWSER NOW AFTER LEAVING DISK UTIL. DISK UTIL READ MY HD IS FIXED AND OK AND WILL BOOT HOWEVER I AM SCARED IT WILL ONLY BOOT INTO WHATEVER THIS WEBKIT MAC OS X BASE IS.

That's Mt. Lion's Recovery volume which you could have used to erase the working volume and do a clean install of Mt. LIon.  To get rid of it you may have to try to repartition the entire drive with Disk Utility.
Otherwise, reboot with the Command+R keys held down to boot into the Recovery volume.  Once there run Disk Utility to again erase the working volume and then do an install of Mt. Lion. This method is much easier and quicker than doing it from the USB device.

  • Can not remove mac osx base system drive

    Hi folks..
Just trying to do a complete clean install of Mountain Lion. I booted up from a USB and erased the Macbook hardrive completely.
However I see a second drive/partition below that says 'disk2 - Mac OSX Base system' and it's about 2 gigs in size. I want to wipe and delete this too so that I will have just one single partion but disk utility will not letr me even touch it.
The 'erase' and Security options are greyed out and inactive and there is some text to the right that says: "This is the start up partition you can not erase it".
I don't see how it can be a start up partition as it's only 2 gigs in size and the main 750 gig drive has already been wiped.
How can i get rid of this drive/partition completely?
    Thanks.

No, a Lightroom catalog cannot be on a networked drive, and can only be accessed by a single user at a time.
