Mac OS X constantly freezing

My Mac OS X keeps freezing once I try to do anything. I can turn on my laptop with no problems just a bit slow, but once I try to click on anything the spinning wheel appears and stays till I have to force quit. Ive ran the hard ware test and it detected no problems? I cant run any updates on operating systems as was suggested by a friend as it freezes once I try to click on the apple icon. I dont know for sure how much memory I have left and I can't check now but I think it wasnt much. Dont know what to do....appreciate any suggestions.

Run you machine for awhile from your startup drive.  See if it freezes.
I suspect disk corruptions.

  • Mid 2013 Mac Book Pro constantly freezing up and needing a hard restart

My mid 2012 mac book pro randomly started freezing while in use back in october. I had never had any problems with it and one night the beachball came up and nothing worked until I did a hard restart. Since then it's been happening constantly. I've had the hard drive replaced after being told that it was likely failing and the problem still remains. I've reset the Pram and everything else that can be reset. I reinstalled Lion. I've taken it to the apple store and they ran all the hardware and software test including the over night stress test for hardware and they found nothing wrong. They did a clean install at the store and the problem is still there. It is not program specific (it freezes while using any program or while doing nothing at all), it's not a ram issue. I don't have any apps except those that have come through the app store. I'm not sure what to do with it. It's basically rendered my $1300 computer unusable. Any thoughts. I'm going to try mavericks and see if that helps, have been running lion. From reading other forums it seems like this has happened to others, but it seems like everyone has different answers. Some switched to a different os, others found small hardware issues.

If it's behaving like the hard drive is bad and it's not, another likely candidate is the SATA cable which connects the drive to the motherboard. An easy way to test this is to take the drive out of the computer, move it to an external housing, and boot it from there by holding down the Option key and selecting that drive when you boot up. If everything runs fine, the SATA cable is the problem.

  • Upgraded to Firefox 4.0.1 for Mac, constantly freezes and crashes, have to force quit, bad bugs. Switching to Safari.

I upgraded to Firefox 4.0.1, and it now constantly freezes, won't respond at all, and has to be force quit and restarted. Within less than 5 minutes of use, over and over and over... I'm assuming it is a bug in the Mac version.... Am switching to Safari as I can't waste this much time constantly quitting and restarting and getting my tabs all back up. Any suggestions on ways to let Firefox know about the bug would be greatly appreciated. It worked fine until I upgraded :( Am running Mac OS X 10.6.7

  • I downloaded the new Firefox but it constantly freezes, doing absolutely nothing, and I can't even close it from my Mac dock bar, I have to turn off my laptop using the power button as Firefox won't let me shut down. What can I do?

    Hi
I recently downloaded the new Firefox (Firefox 4, I think - you can tell I'm very tech savvy!) and it constantly freezes, I can't do anything with it at all - I can't even close it from the icon in my Mac dock bar.
I have tried restarting my computer - though I have to turn it off by using the power button as as Firefox is open and totally unresponsive it won't let me shut down. About a minute after re-starting Firefox, restoring my tabs or starting afresh, it freezes again.
This is obviously very annoying and I'm not sure what I can do about it. Firefox is my preferred browser, and I'd really like to be able to use it again!

This is not a reply. I just want to elaborate on this problem.
My computer freezes occasionally when it is used after being sleep for a while. The spinning ball appears and everything is totally disabled. Nothing on the keyboard works.
The mouse moves, but does not work.
The only solution is to turn the power off and on (losing all data in open applications.)
I kept the System monitor running on the side to find out which program was running when the computer froze. The Monitor as well as all other applications froze, but the data showed:
    Firefox 18.4%
    Activity Monitor 0.9%
    Firefox Plugin 0.2%
This is all the information I have. By the way, I am using iMac with OS 10.6.

  • Mac Book pro Retina (15 inch early 2013) is constantly freezing.

    Problem description:
My Mac is constantly freezing, for (how it looks like) no good reason. Sometimes it occurs when I load League of Legends, sometimes it does not, also it just froze when I opened Iphoto, so I am not sure why this happens. So when I shut the Mac down, which is, or so it seems the only thing I can do, at the time of the freeze, it tells me, I have a graphic problem, but I am never able to see the report. Yea this is my problem right now with the mac, thanks for reading.

  • My Mac Mini running yosemite 10.10.3 constantly freezes

my mac mini runs slow & freezes after updating to 10.10.3

    Hi,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that your Mac is not running as quickly as you would expect and you noticed this after the most recent update. In this situation, I would recommend reading over and working through the steps outlined in the attached article below.
OS X Yosemite: If your Mac runs slowly

  • Lightroom 4 and 5 my program constantly freezes while using the crop and straighten tool

In both Lightroom 4 and 5 my program constantly freezes while using the crop and straighten tool with horizontal images. Im running Lightroom on a Quad-Core Intel Xeon Mac with 32 GB of memory with OS 10.8.4, this problem has gotten worse and worse to the point where the crop tool is unusable. Please help!

    Alright,
no replies so far! Anyways, here's some more information which is leading me to the conclusion that the bug causing the effect described above is a combination of Apple's SMB implementation of Mavericks and the way Lightroom is actually using SMB network access:
I did another trial by connecting a USB hard drive to the USB port of my router (Netgear). The connection is quite slow, but moving one of the folders in question (see my 1st post above) to the shared drive connected to the Router made Lightroom on my Windows machine to see the photos again, when I told Lightroom where to find the moved folder!
Everything was working as expected, on the Windows machine again! Moving the folder back again to the Mac Mini fileshare was causing Lightroom on the PC to get blind again for the pictures trying to sync or import. However, accessing and modifying a photo was possible again, like it was before the trial. So it's only the sync and import function having a problem!
I also did some trial in re-building ACLs and access rights on the file server with no luck. So there's got to be a functionality in sync and import of Lightroom which is using a certain SMB feature which is not supported by Apple's SMB implementation!
    Any thoughts or hints?
    Thanks!

  • Why is my computer constantly freezing up

My Mac is constantly freezing up. I have plenty of hard drive space and my memory is all good. Once it is turned on, it will occasionally have a flashing file with a question mark, but not as many times now since I have cleared out most of the files and did a couple disc verifies and repairs. It will come on now, sometimes for 20 minutes, if im lucky, and freeze up. Most of the time it is within 10 minutes of restarting it.
It also does something wierd. When its on, you can hear the computer processing information ( thats my guess of what its doing), but if I turn off the mac, and unplug it from the wall, I can still hear it working??
I just want it fixed, I am not sure of whats going on with it, but it is getting annoying. If anyone does know and how much it will cost to fix, please let me know.
To be honest, I would almost get a pc, but all my adobe creative suite is the mac edition, and I cant afford to buy it again.v So ANY info, would be awesome info.

flashing file with a question mark
Appears when the system can't find a drive to boot from. Have you tried repairing the drive in Disk Utility? Drive may be getting flaky and could fail. Make a backup ASAP.
Look for any relevant messages in Console in Utilities.

  • Mail constantly freezes

Ever since I upgraded to Mavericks, which was shortly after it was released, Apple Mail constantly freezes. It's an odd sort of freeze in that I can still scroll through existing mail and can compose a new email. However, it doesn't bring in new mail and if I write a new email and try to send I just get the spinning beach ball and then have to force quite. Once it has hung up, it won't work again unless I completely restart my computer. What I have noticed is that the Mail hang often happens when I have InDesign open. Also if Mail is frozen, Safari seems to freeze at the same time.
Since there seems to be some correlation with InDesign, have been wondering if fonts might be an issue as I use Suitcase in conjunction with InDesign. Anyway, after the last Mavericks update it seems as if the freezing is now occurring even without InDesign being open and it happens on a daily basis, to the point where I'm about to give up on using Mail. When I first had the problem it seemed like it was related to Gmail accounts (I have 2 in my Mail Account), but from everything I have read this should have been solved.
Anyone have any thoughts on this problem. I've been a longtime Mac user and this is the first time I've ever had such a prolonged issue after an upgrade.
    Jeff

  • HT1338 Mouse constantly freezes

On my Mac, the mouse constantly is freezing and un freezing. When im moving it, it'd jump around , freeze , etc. Ive used multiple mouses and discovered that it can't be the mouse, its the Mac. Please help
    -Thanks

Magic mouse?  Yes?  Trust me, it's the mouse!
Here's a (16 page and counting) thread on this topic:
    Magic Mouse Loses Connection
General gist is that the batteries can move in the compartment and loose contact.  Solutions are little aluminum balls to keep them in place or somthing to keep them from moving.  The popular reason is that not all makes of batteries are the same in they they differ in the height of the positive terminal (little nib contact).  Makes with shorter positive terminals loose contact with movement and can recontact with some more movement.

  • Why does my internet constantly freeze since I hooked up Airport Extreme?

I purchased an Airport Extreme for Wi-Fi and to back up my MacBook files.  I had it hooked up for about 2 week now and since then, it seems our internet is constantly freezing.  Sometimes its just once other times it happens every few minutes.  We stream video often and it has been getting stuck all the time.   It seems to be the worst in the early morning and around 8:30 at night.
I'm not network savvy but will try to secribe how it is hooked up.  I have the airport connected via a modem (not wifi) with Ethernet.  The internet is DSL.  There is also a security camera connected to a D-Link router that I plugged into the Airport.  There's also some kind of internet feed for our PV system that I connected directly into the Airport too.
We have Apple TV, 1 Macbook, 2 iPads, 2 iPhones, 1 iTouch, 2 PCs, 1 Sam Sung phone.   There can be up to 3 devices streaming video at once.  I thought it had something to do with the D-Link camera but not sure.
We disconnected the Airport today and connected a Westtell router and so far no freezing.  I saw some posts about D-Link and Airport Extreme not being compatible but I'm not sure what that means.  If they are incompatible, does that mean I have to choose to use the Airport and get rid of the security camera or vice versa??
I'm frustrated because the Extreme was expensive and I'm wondering if I can ever get it working.

On your MacBook: Go to System Preferences > Network. Select Wi-Fi from the left column. Click the Advanced... button.
Under the Preferred Networks list, select every Wi-Fi network that appears and delete each one using the "–" (minus) button. Select the box "Remember networks this computer has joined" if it is not already selected.
    OK then Apply.
Select your AirPort Extreme's wireless network in your Mac's Wi-Fi menu, and determine if that solves its connection problems.
Our alarm company set up the camera with the D-Link before we got the Ariport and we can't figure out how to hookup the camera to the Airport without the D-Link.
You may need to solicit the security company's help. Adding your Extreme to your network as a router constitutes a fundamental change in your network's design. If you are now using the Extreme as your router, the D-Link router should be reconfigured as a bridge. Depending on the nature of your security system, it may not be required at all, but your concern about the security camera requiring specific port forwarding settings is justified. Changing your router from the D-Link to the Extreme may require forwarding specific ports using AirPort Utility, otherwise your security camera's video may not be accessible from the Internet. This goes beyond any help I can provide, since your security system has requirements of its own.
Configuring the Extreme as a bridge is likely to solve the problem... but if the D-Link wireless router was sufficient, do you really need another access point? The reason I'm asking is this:
... I purchased an Airport Extreme for Wi-Fi and to back up my MacBook files.
If you need a wireless backup device for Time Machine, a Time Capsule may be a better choice.

  • Safari constantly freezes to reload

When using Safari, it seems like it is constantly freezing up and loading and the cursor turns to the color wheel. Any suggestions?

    Welcome to the forums!
    Try some of this:
(First, if yours is an Intel Mac, check that Safari is not running in Rosetta, which is enough to slow it to a crawl. If you are running Snow Leopard, run Safari in 32 bit not 64 bit. Control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. Select 32 bit mode)
Do you have enough RAM? Less than 1GB can cause slowness. Is your hard drive too full? Less than 15%, or 15GB, of free space can also cause slowness.
Adding DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security:
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2296
If your computer is part of a network: please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/bestpractices/#yournetwork and follow the advice given.
(An explanation of why using Open DNS is both safe and a good idea can be read here: http://www.labnol.org/internet/tools/opendsn-what-is-opendns-why-required-2/2587 /
Open DNS also provides an anti-phishing feature: http://www.opendns.com/solutions/homenetwork/anti-phishing/ )
Wikipedia also has an interesting article about Open DNS:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenDNS
Whilst in System Preferences/Network you should also turn off 'IPv6' in your preference pane, as otherwise you may not get the full speed benefit (the DNS resolver will default to making SRV queries). If you want to know what IPv6 is:
This is Apple's guidance on iPv6:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8708.html
Click on Apply Now and close the window.
    Restart Safari, and repair permissions.
If that didn't do it, then try this as well:
Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
    form values
    download.plist
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
    com.apple.Safari.plist
    Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).
Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.

  • Terminal Application constantly freezing

    Dear Forum :
I am from a Unix background and I am very familiar with the command-line, but I find in Mac OS 10.5 that the Terminal.app is constantly freezing.
Symptoms: seemingly randomly the Terminal.app 'freezes' (is unresponsive) with the dreaded colored pinwheel. This will happen independently of what is actually being done. It could be during a simple ls -al or tab-completing or even just editing a file in vim (in the middle of typing some text I get the pinwheel).
It seems like it is waiting for some process to finish or perhaps looking up something (like a dns delay ???) but in any case it doesn't respond for a good 3-5 seconds before returning. It doesn't seem to be at intervals, but annoyingly random.
On the contrary the xterm application (which launches with X11.app) is very fast and no visible delays. Thus it seems independent of what shell or application is being run within the terminal.
Is anyone experiencing this same phenomena? It makes Terminal.app completely unusable. I am familiar with X11 and xterm, but Terminal.app seems to offer some nice features.
What can be done to alleviate this situation?

This is a question that is better asked in the Discussions -> Mac OS X Technologies -> Unix forum <http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=735>
I have not seen this with Terminal. So I would wonder if you have lots of Terminal sessions active (either as separate windows, or as tabs)?
Do you have Terminal displayed in multiple Spaces?
What I'm wondering is if you are doing anything beyond using a single Terminal session window. It is NOT that I think anything is wrong with using multiple Terminal sessions, I am just looking for something beyond your active session that might affect the Terminal App behind your back.
I would also like to point out that iTerm is another terminal emulator for Mac OS X that a lot of terminal users like.
    <http://iterm.sf.net>
Again, I'm not saying anything negative about Terminal, as I use BOTH Terminal and iTerm all day long on my PowerMac G5 at work.
