Mac OS x/ finder/ hard drive/ start up.... problems PLEASE HELP URGENT!!

Right
firstly my finder icon on the dock the little triangle to show it on disapers. meaning all the icons on the desktop disapear! Then i restart to get them back but it loads the grey screen then goes to blue and nothing else. So i restart but hold down the ALT key to see drives and i calls my HD EMI drive or something so i boot from Backup cd 1 and have to reload Mac OS x Again for the second time today! what is going on and how can i fix it?

Michael,
First,Back up all important files.Then...
Run Apple Hardware Test from OS X Install Disk #1.
If it reports any problems, believe it and call AppleCare to have MacBook repaired.
If AHT reports "No problems found",I'd recommend an Erase and Install of OS X.
Let us know the outcome either way.

  • Internal Hard drive start up problems scince installing a new one

    Hi All,
I had installed a new WD Green hard drive in my intel 17" iMac.
I set up via Leopard the installation process and all went well (Disk utilities, partition etc).
When I was initially installing applications/upgrades and restarting the computer (not powering off) the system was running well.
So, I powered off and when I came back to the iMac and powered on, I came to a grey screen which showed a folder icon with a question mark in it. It did not recognise my new hard drive.
I went back to the installation disk and pressed the 'C' key and went to disk utilities. It recognised the hard drive and the installed system, and when restarted it booted back into the Leopard OS. I thought all was fixed. I powered off again and the same gray screen and icon came back. (I had previously set via System preferences the start up disk etc).
I reinstalled my original hard drive and powering off and on is not a problem-it booted straight back into Leopard.
Any clues what is going on?
    Many Thanks Fred.

I wrote to WD with my WD HDD Model and serial number:
'Is this hard drive bootable with my iMac 17" Intel'?
    Reply today:
Thank you for contacting Western Digital Customer Service and Support. My name is Joel O.
I truly apologize that you are having problems with your product. The drive is bootable if you set it up in that way, but try this:
1- Go to ''Finder'' and click on the option ''Go''.
    2- Click on ''Utilities''.
3- Click on ''Disk utility''.On that window take a look to see if the drive is listed
4- Click on the drive ( it will appear twice, select the one that shows the capacity)
    5- Click on ''First Aid''.
    6- Select ''Repair Disk''
I hope that we have met your expectations today and that you are satisfied with our service. If you have any further questions, please reply to this email and we will be happy to assist you further.
    Sincerely,

  • I can boot up my macbook pro but all i see is the wallpaper and the dock and the toolbar at the top. I can not see my hard drive or anything else. please help

Please help. I can boot up my macbook pro and log in but after that all i see is the wallpaper, toolbar and the dock. In the dock it has 2 ? where the doc and download folders should be.  If I open up a new finder window it doesnt show anything in there no hard drive or anything. If anyone konws how to help let me know please and thank you.

Agree with baltwo, though even if you have saved the install app I wouldn't use it unless its been used to install a known good copy of the OS already.
In your case, that probably means start fresh:
Restart the computer, holding down 'command' and 'r'. When the recovery disk window shows, choose 'Reinstall Mac OS X'.

  • Crashed Hard Drive!!! Please Help!

Hi everyone, this is my first time on Mac Support, and I am in desperate need of help!
I have a black Macbook with OS 10.4.11 with the 80gig hard drive. Unfortunately the hard drive crashed and I did not back it up. Here's how it happened:
I bought a new hard drive to upgrade and installed it in the computer without installing an OS. The original hard drive I put in a SATA enclosure, and booted from that externally. While I was using the computer, the USB connection was interrupted by accidentally wiggling the cord at the connection point. The computer froze, and when I tried to reboot, the computer recognized the drive as the bootable drive, but could not boot, turned to a blue screen with the loading wheel just continuing forever, and then after about 5 minutes the computer would shut off. After taking it to my University tech center, they could not boot from it, or repair the disk. However, they got a few files off it, including mostly program files, but couldn't get any User files, which is what I desperately need and include hundreds of hours of music production that I moronically did not back-up.
When I ran Disk Utility to repair the disk, this is the message I got:
Verify and Repair disk “Macintosh HD”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid index key
    Rebuilding Catalog B-tree.
The volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
    Repair attempted on 1 volume
1 volume could not be repaired
So what do I do now? Is this a physical problem or an internal coding problem? Will DiskWarrior do anything for me? or should I pay the $1000 to have DriveSavers recover my files?...hopefully not!
Any help with this would be great!'
    Thanks,
    Alden

I can not say for sure that DiskWarrior can fix it....but that is exactly the kind of problem it was made for.....
You might run Apple's Disk Utility several times....I have seen Disk Utility slowly repair a drive... a little at a time....fixing a few more errors each time it is run....
Only you know what your data was worth too you....I hope something works for you....

  • Disk Utility and Disk Warrior error on internal hard drive....PLEASE HELP!!

After running idefrag on my internal Western Digital 120gig hard drive. The drive did not appear after I rebooted my mac. I opened Disk Utility and the drive is there but grayed out. I used "repair disk" under First Aid and it gave me this error:
Verify and Repair disk “HD 120”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Invalid B-tree node size
    Volume check failed.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
Then I tried using Disk Warrior 3.0 to rebuild and it gave me this error:
error ""WD 120 GB" cannot be rebuilt. The original directory is too severely damaged. The disk was not modified (2155, 2179)".
I'm not sure if this is the right area to post this, but I need help as most of my important data is on this hard drive. What else can I do?
    I am on a g4 quicksilver with 10.4.3 installed.

Sorry to hear about your problem but unless you are working with very large files such as with video editing, etc., using a defrag utility is not required with OS X and no defrag utility should be used on a hard drive without a backup first.
The current Disk Warrior version for Tiger is 3.0.3 and if Disk Warrior cannot repair the drive/directory, it must be in bad shape which was caused by using idefrag.
You can try using a data recovery utility such as Data Rescue (Prosoft Engineering) which includes a free trial version.

  • Dead Hard Drive?!? Please help!

I have posted earlier on here when I was having problems. I did an archive & install & thought I had the issue fixed. Now it won't boot up at all. When I boot from the OSX Install CD or DiskWarrior, sometimes the hard drive won't show up. Sometimes it does, but when I go to fix errors or permissions or replace directory it says can't unmount disk. Ugh!
I have zapped the PRAM & NVRAM, tried everything I can think of. (more info can be found at: http://www.macfixitforums.com/showflat.php?Board=tiger&Number=800764)
Here is what shows up when I hold down command v at startup:

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Is this a PRAM battery issue or a HD issue? Is there any way to fix it or get my files off the HD?
    Please help!

What's the easiest way to get info off here... I have DiskWarrior but don't see a way to recover files. I have photos that I haven't gotten off & now it is really gone, I think. I have another computer coming & want to see what I can do to get my files.
Any good recovery companies out there?

  • External hard drive won't install, Please Help

I just purchased this same external hard drive, 3/7/2011.  I hooked everything up via my USB, put in the installation CD, got the Drive Set-up window, clicked on Backup Software and got a message "C:\DOCUMEN~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\pft48F~tmp\" and "Access denied" with the only choice of clicking on "OK"; when I clicked on OK, a small window titled "unpacking backup software" appears in the upper left corner; it got about halfway through, stopped and I got an alert from my McAfee security program that it detected a trojan and removed it. Then 3 gauges appear in the upper left corner and the message "Toshiba Backup Software Installation an error occurred during the move data process of the file REFILERW.SYS!" appears and I click OK again then the Toshiba Drive Setup window appears and a green checkmark is NOT next to Backup Software. However, if I go ahead and click on the other 2 items to install, Drive Monitor Software and Power Save Software, a green checkmark appears next to them. When I then click Exit I get my regular startup screen. The Drive Monitor appears in My Programs but nothing else.  Did Toshiba send me a trojan on their program?
When I checked out my McAfee to see what the name of the trojan was,it says: Artemis!8CBE6FC5C432
I'm not a technophobe and am just lost; I don't know what to do or where to get answers. I emailed Toshiba Tech Support twice but didn't get anything back.
Please, can someone out there help me?

It would be a false positive.  Some antivirus programs look for virus like activity, and that makes them much more prone to errors.
Get rid of McAfee's and switch to Microsoft Security Essentials, it is free and very good.   Security essentials is a very light program, so you will not notice any slow downs when it is running like the bloatware security programs are known for and you will have far fewer false positives.
    http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/
When I used to manage a PC repair shop, we used to have people come in and pay us to get rid of McAfee's and Nortons on their systems because they would slow the computers down so much, and the false positives were making them miserable when trying to install programs that they knew were safe.

  • Hard Drive Failure?! Please help!!

I just purchased the 160 GB LaCie Mini external harddrive for my Mini. However I noticed when I play video files from the drive they appear choppy and blurred. I verified the disk in Disk Utility and got this message:
    Verifying volume “160”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid extent entry
The volume 160 needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
         Volume needs repair
Then when I tried to repair it I got this message:
    Verify and Repair disk “160”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid extent entry
    Volume check failed.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
I've attempted to erase the contents of the drive with zero out erase but I keep getting errors when I load files back onto the drive.
AND NOW MY INTERNAL HARD DRIVE HAS A "FATAL HARWARE ERROR"! aaahhh!! The S.M.A.R.T Status reads "Failing".
Why are both my internal and external drives suddenely failing?? And what should I do?! Someone please help!!

SMART status is a pretty reliable indicator of what is going on. You should back up your irreplaceable files as soon as possible.

  • Frozen on Start Up Screen - Please Help (Urgent)

I've had my mac Mini for a little over a year now and have not once had a problem with it. When I came home from work yesterday there had been a powercut and naturally my mac mini had switched off. When i tried to turn it back on it made the chime and went into the start up screen (with the mac logo and the little spinning thing) i was waiting half an hour for it to get off this screen but it did not. When i restarteed the computer i had the same problem, i left it on over night to see if it was just going to take time to load but by this morning nothing had changed (same loading screen on moniter).
I Have tried to reset the PMU (or whatever its called) and i still have the same probelm.
Help desperatly needed as the computer has two years worth of school work and writing on it not to mention music and movies than ive made for my uni course!
    Many thanks in advance
    Henry

OK, so it looks like when the mini crashed, it ended up corrupting the drive directory structure - possibly it was in the middle of a write operation when the power failed.
The good news is that rarely does this cause a hardware fault, so there is like as not, nothing wrong with the system that can't be fixed.
However, the bad news is that without a disk recovery utility, such as DiskWarrior or Tech Tools Pro, neither of which are absolutely certain to work) the only way to get the system back under normal control is to reformat the drive, since this will rewrite the directory structure. And of course reformatting will loose your data. In this situation, simply trying to reinstall MacOS won't work since the system has errors on the drive that will prevent data being safely written. Also, any and all disk write activity risks overwriting your data since the faults generally will indicate that MacOS won't know for sure where your data is, thus make it possible to write over the top of it.
Since iTunes won't allow you to download again, and it appears you don't have any backups, I think you have few options to consider:
1 - buy a copy of DiskWarrior or Tech Tools Pro and try and recover the drive that way. The disadvantages are that this will cost you some money, and there's no certainty it will work, but if it does, the advantage is that you could restore your drive (and thus system) to full operational status with little effort.
2 - get hold of (meaning buy or borrow from someone else) an external firewire drive onto which you can install a copy of MacOS with which to boot your system. Once booted, then use the drive to copy off your files, then once backed up, do an Erase and Install using your original install disk to reformat the hard drive and put back a working copy of MacOS. Once done, you can then copy your files back from the external hard drive.
3 - if you have another Mac available to you, connect your mini to it with a firewire cable and start it up holding the T key to put it into firewire target disk mode. It should then appear on the other Mac's desktop as an external drive and thus allow you to access your files and back them up.
Beware however that if the directory structure on the mini's hard drive is messed up, there is no certainty that you can recover all your data since the data may not be entirely intact, or indeed, in the locations the directory structure tells the system it is in. As a result, the best option from the 3 above is the first - to try and repair the directory using one of those two utilities.

  • IBook G3(Dual usb) Start up problem (Please Help asap....)

Like I have Write it on the title i have problem with my old ibook g3
It was working cool... so after one day when i try to turn it on.. It doesn't work... It make ''The startup sound'' after that only black screen .. sometimes it show a ''question mark'' on apple face and a apple icon
I have try different methodes but it doesn't work..
I have reset with PMU but still not work..
Please Tell me what do i have to do to fix it ..
    Thnx Apple ..

You don't remember what version of the OS is installed on it?
If it has Mac OS X 10.2 or later, you could try starting up in Safe Mode. If this works, it will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
Note: If the OS is earlier than Mac OS X 10.2, a Safe Boot is not an option. That is why I asked which version of the OS is installed.
If a Safe Boot into Safe Mode works you will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, try to restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say?
Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). What is the hard drive capacity and how much space remains available on it? Repair permissions on it.
See if you are able to do a little hard drive maintenance to help things out.
Do you have access to another Mac with FireWire? If so, you could try starting up In _FireWire Target Disk Mode_ with the iBook as the target disk. If this works, it will act like an external hard drive to the other (host) computer and will enable you to retrieve data from the iBook and save it to the hard drive of the other (host) computer.
Without the system discs or knowing what version of the OS is installed, we are a bit stymied in helping you out. If a Safe Boot and/or resetting the PMU doesn't help, then you are going to have to take it in for repairs. (Please note: paying for repairs may cost more than the iBook is worth.)
    Good luck.

Replace your hard drive. A retail hdd can be used, just be sure to get one with at least as large a capacity as original in order to use HP Recovery Discs to install Windows. For instance if you have a 320gb a 500gb could be used but not a 250gb.

  • External Hard Drive Read Only. Please Help!

So I have looked for answers and I can't find one. I need help ASAP cause I have to edit pictures and I have no space.
Ive read that I have to format my ED but it was working just fine. I don't want to erase none of the backups in there. Theres about 900GB already used.

Looks like your HD is full. When something is full, the only way to make room is to delete stuff.
Formatting will wipe it clean by removing everything in it.
For alternatives, go into the HD and delete stuff selectively you no longer need to make room.
The only other option is to buy a new HD.
With that said, I see no indication the drive is failing. Only that it is full.  Unless you know for a fact there should not be enough data in it to have only 88GB left. I don't see anything overtly wrong with it.
