Mac OS X hanging almost constantly

Hi all.
I have a macbook pro 13" and for the last 2 days or so I have been getting the spinning beach ball too many times. For example it took about 6 bounces to open safari just now and it hung with the beach ball for about a minute - twice. I have also ran disk utility and no errors have shown up. I have another thread posted about my boot up issues and thats why I have been running disk utility and apple hardware test and it has been showing up with no issues. Anyone have an idea why this is happening? I would like to use my macbook without it hanging.

One possible reason is you need more RAM depending upon how many applications you are trying to use concurrently. Lack of sufficient RAM is often a cause of frequent beach balling - it is the result of excessive disk drive activity.
Another possible cause is some sort of file corruption - preference, temp, or cache file(s).
It can also be something defective in your OS X system installation, or it could be a hardware problem. Since the computer is new and in warranty take it to your local Apple retailer or service center for repair.

I tried to add this in the topic already open but it kept sending me through the unending rabbit holes!
My question is: How do I figure out what release I was on, get rid of this one and got back to a functional firefox that moves in realtime. I already did all the reset and etc.... I just want to go back to the speed I had. This halting , hanging up misery of a browzer is Sad. I have had firefox for years and always recommended it ..... BUT NOT ANY MORE. I agree with the other poster ... there should be a rollback feature. Peoples time has value and right now FireFox is sucking the value down a rabbit hole.

I wpdated once a month or so ago and it slowed down..... but the latest update before I did the reset really slowed me down. I came here to fix it a couple of dayz ago and did the reset firefox and now it IS RUNNING SO POORLY AND SLOW I AM ABOUT TO KILL IT OFF MY MACHINE!!! Yes that is me yelling - and it happened in SSSSSSSSSSSSS LLLLLLLLL OOOOOOOO WWWWWWWWWW Motion. I have run all the security scans and cleanups ---this needs a fix ASAP!!! PS: The hang ups and slowness is EVERYWHERE I go. I only get speed doing programs not connected to ON LINE.

    Hello,
The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: ''This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.''
To Reset Firefox do the following:
#Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
    #Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.
Further information can be found in the [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]] article.

  • My Mac Pro is hanging after installing Mountain Lion

My Mac Pro is hanging and it started not long after I installed Mountain Lion. It seems to be related to Contacts in that it is constantly trying to sync with iCloud. It becomes unresponsive and when I force quit, other apps start going down. Eventually Mail hangs and I have to hit the power button and force a restart of the Mac Pro. It also brings down my DSL connection which runs through an Airport Extreme. Has anybody had similar experiences? Contrary to what it might say in my profile, I'm running a 2.8 Ghz Quad Core Mac Pro and 10.8.2.

Welcome. If you search for "Mountain Lion freeze" you will see you are NOT alone. But as far as I know there is no solution.

In order to resolve the issue if it occurs again, more info would be helpful as to what occurred prior to the "hang." One potential fix would be to try a Safe Boot:
After the Mac is completely shut down, push the power button and immediately after the startup tone, hold down the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone but not before.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
There should be a message that says "SafeBoot." After the Mac is completely booted, try restarting and see if the issue is gone.

  • HP Pavilion dv6 2122eo fan running almost constantly

On my now 12 month old HP dv5 2122eo running windows 7 64-bit home edition, the fan runs almost constantly, and has done so since purchase, even without any load on the pc.
Installed programme Core Temp to see temperatures, and the fan runs even at a temp. of 41C. Bios has a function to disable fan from running all the time, but even after disabling this in Bios, the fan still runs almost constantly. Would be grateful for any help/suggestions. This seems to be a problem for this pc when searching for solutions on the Web.

    Andrew,
You can't control the fan speed/function directly on HP laptops.  If you haven't updated the BIOS then try that.  Also, here's some other stuff to try.

  • Mac pro still hangs on the blue screen on start up.

    Hi.
my mac pro still hangs for ages on the blue screen before the login page where i input my password appears.
i've tried starting up in command-V and that didn't work.
i thought snow leopard was meant to improve, it has just slowed my start up down greatly!
could someone please advise on how to fix this?
    thanks
    Dan.

    Hi boom,
Have you tried downloading and re-applying the latest Combo update?
If not, go to the apple download page, find the Combo update (couple of hundred MB) and install it.
This has fixed various issues in the past for numerous users... it might do the trick for you.
After it's installed and rebooted, repair permissions and reboot again.
Also check to see (using software update) if there are no firmware updates available for you.
And, make sure the OS drive's root is clean, just the basic Applications, Library, System and Users folders, no other mess. If there are 'Previous System' folders from earlier Archive & Install situations you might want to remove those.
Finally, if you upgraded from a PowerPC to Intel using the Migration Assistant the symptoms you are describing are very common, the migration assistant well... it ***** :/

  • My mac osx 10.7.3 constantly disconnects from airport internet.

my mac osx 10.7.3 constantly disconnects from airport internet. I am able to reconnect every time but do this every 10 mins. i went to try and change channel but no airport base stations were found. i am positive it is not the router as all other devices stay connected. cant find any answers to my problem, just tons of others with the same issue!!!!

You can't discount your router just because the other devices work. The first thing I'd recommend doing is restarting the modem and router, then checking the router has the most up-to-date firmware (need to check that owners manual) and then you can check some other things like DNS settings and router channel conflicts with neighbors.
After restarting the router and double checking the firmware is up-to-date then I'd recommend checking the channel your router is on and what your neighbors use. You can download and use iStumbler, this will scan your area. If you are like most users neither you or your neighbors have changed the router channel from the default 5 or 6 channel. Look to see what channels are not being used and reset the router's channel. If that doesn't work then reset the DNS settings from the defaults your ISP uses. If you get to the point where the DNS does need to be reset here are the instructions:
    1. System preferences
    2. Network
    3. Click Advanced
    4. Click DNS tab
    5. Click + sign
    6. Add 208.67.222.222
    7. Click + sign
    8. Add 208.67.220.220
    9. Click OK.
    10. Exit System Preferences
If you want more info on the DNS please read CNET's DNS Article and MacWorld's DNS Troubleshooting articles. If all that fails then you can simply toggle the wi-fi on and off on the w-fi menu in the upper right of your screen.

  • 9.01 on Mac 10.6 hangs on trying to restore session or start a new session

9.01 on Mac 10.6 hangs on trying to restore session or start a new session
    Hangs on Firefox startup
Firefox says We're embarrassed and just hangs needing to be force quit--

I've found the issue on Mac. Apparently if the server sends back nothing, "Content-Length: 0", NetLingo hangs... not very robust. This isn't a problem on Windows, but the hack is to always send at least one byte payload.

  • The fan runs almost constantly but is not hot

My macbook pro is making a fan-funning sound almost constantly, even when the computer is not hot.  I have tried shutting down and restarting, to no avail.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

As leroydouglas mentioned, the fans are always running, the idle speed is about 2000 rpm, if your fans are running at high speed when the machine is not working hard you can try a Systwm Management Control reset:

Follow direstions for a battery you should not remove yourself

  • Mac OSX Installer Hangs During Installation

    Macbook Pro 15"
    Core 2 Duo 2.53Ghz
    4Gb RAM
    9400M
    Erased Hard Disk,
    Boot from CD
Mac OSX installer hangs during installation
Time remaining remains the same for >3 hours
After clicking get spinny beachball cursor.
    What should I do?
    Thanks.

The installer may actually not be hunging, in my installation on Win XP, I have seen it "pause" at this point for 5 min or more before continuing with the installation to a successful completion, I did not try to do anything to assist it. Try giving it more time and see what happens.

  • Mac OSX just hangs/freezes, HELP!

    Hello,
My DP 2.0ghz G5, keeps hanging/freezing, meaning I can't move the cursor, it won't respond, the music in the background just skips. I've already ran disk utility which gave the message that it had an invalid leaf record count (should be 0 instead of 527), which it could not fix. I've also ran hardware tests and everything seems okay. I've also narrowed it down to when it hangs. Whenever I have anytype of music or sound, it hangs almost immediately. Does anyone know what this could be?

It sounds like a directory problem. If you format and reinstall it'll almost certianly be repaired. That's just an absolute step for me. If you erase the drive it will erase the corrupt directory. Really DiskWarrior can probably fix it. It's the one utility I wouldn't live without,,,,it's that good. DW has saved my bacon many times.

  • How do I prevent my Mac Pro from  hanging up in a start/stop loop?

My Mac Pro has a strange behavior I need help with. This computer is used almost exclusively for audio recording in my studio. I run Cubase 4 as my primary sequencing software. Everything will be going fine during a session, and then the software will abruptly hang up in a *start/stop loop*, stuttering back and forth between these two functions for up to 2 minutes before stopping. During this loop problem, the start/stop transport buttons alternately light up and the song starts and stops. Nothing I have tried will interrupt the problem. It just runs its course and then stops, usually between 30 - 90 seconds.
Interestingly, the same behavior shows up in other applications and in the Finder. In Quicktime and iTunes, it shows up as a start/stop loop. In the finder, it will shuttle back and forth between two related functions and beep each time. In word, it will show up as a key stick, typing the same letter over and over.
Needless to say, this is all very frustrating and embarrassing when clients are here. Any help will be greatly appreciates. Let me know if you have any additional questions.

I'd begin with repairing your drives with Disk Utility and Disk Warrior; clone your system to another drive, and check for corrupt files and prefs.
