  • Help! I'm stuck in the Mac OS X Installer

I’m trying to restore my Mac mini back to its factory settings, but whenever I restart from the installation disk, a dialog pops up (after choosing a language) that says “Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer.”
Then, after reading a few discussions and thinking this was what I was supposed to do, I went to Disk Utility and erased/reformatted the hard drive [as Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) with 1 partition using the Apple Partition Map]. Now the hard drive is not showing up in the Startup Disk. The only two options that show up in the Startup Disk are the Mac OS X installation disc [which brings me to the dialog box that says it can’t be installed] and Network Startup.
    Any ideas??

Apple Partion map is the format for the older PPC mac;s...you need to format it for the intel version...It should be defaulting to GUID...leave it there.

  • Installation stuck in loop

I recently upgraded my hard drive and installed OS X lion. It gave me a kernel error which got stuck in restarting non stop and now I have been trying to install mavericks which is stuck in a loop. It installs but refuses to restart automatically and when I restart it it just goes back to the utilities screen. I tried verifying the disk which gives off unused nodes errors and run repair which fixes it and then veryfing gives off another unused node. Not sure if something is failing, missing, broken or what I can do to make it work correctly.

Also when I try installing lion from my disc it goes to the installation bar then to a black screen and gives me an error that says the Mac OS X installation could not be completed.

  • Windows 8.1 installation stucked at 'Finalizing your settings' stage!

I have G580 model. yesterday I was trying to install windows 8.1 but the installation stucked at "Finalizing your system" stage for about 18 hours! I tried several times to go to the BIOS for reinstall 8.1 or fresh installation of windows 7. but I cant enter into the BIOS by pressing F2/F8/F10/DEL whatever after restarting my system immidiately! what should I do! please help me to install my previous windows 7 OS.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

If you performed a clean install, try again and see if it works out. The same thing which you faced happened to me while I was upgrading from windows 8 to 8.1, it took me a couple of tries before 8.1 would finally install.

  • Why is the installer stuck on "Checking System Profile-"?

I'm trying to install Flash Catalyst Beta on a MacBook Pro running OS 10.6.1 (Snow Leopard).
The installer starts to work, but then it stops at the point where it checks the system profile (see attached screenshot). It doesn't seem to have crashed as the dock icon allows me to quit without force quitting the application.
I've tried it in my regular user account and the administrator account, but the behaviour is identical.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I appreciate all your efforts, but I¹ve just received my new copy of CS5, so
I¹ll be installing the final version.

Subject: Why is the installer stuck on "Checking System
    Profile…"?
    Thanks Gary.
I need to ask you a few questions and request you to perform some more steps
so that I can debug your problem.
    1. Have you modified any folder permissions, authorization setup using
Keychain Access utility (or any other tool)?
    2. Open a Terminal window, and run the command 'ls -l /tmp' and copy-paste
the output printed on your screen in your reply.
    3. Delete all files whose name start with 'asu' in your /tmp folder. Run the
command 'rm -rf /tmp/asu*'. Restart your machine.
    4. Launch the Flash Catalyst setup and check if installation proceeds
successfully. If it doesn't, proceed to the step below.
    5. Open the folder containing the Flash Catalyst setup. Browse to the
'packages' folder and rename the file 'install.sig' to 'update.sig'. Double
click and launch the Flash Catalyst setup. This will not install the
application but install the Adobe Application Manager. Let me know if you
see a small dialog with a progress bar. Rename back update.sig to
install.sig. Update us your observations. Continue to next step.
    6. Launch 'Disk Utility' app (from /Applications/Utilities). Select your OS
partition in the left panel and click on 'First Aid' tab on the top. Click
on the 'Repair Disk Permissions' button at the bottom.
    7. Again, launch the Flash Catalyst setup and check if installation proceeds
successfully. If it doesn't, proceed to the step below.
    8. Open a Terminal window and navigate to the directory containing the Flash
Catalyst setup. Run the command 'sudo Install.app/Contents/MacOS/Install'
and enter the password. Let me know if the installer launches and on
following the screen instructions do you still see the error screen or does
    the installation proceed successfully.

  • Start computer with Mac OS x installation disk.

Will starting my iMac with the Mac OS x installation disc erase all of my information stored on my computer, such as documents, iTunes and etc?  I am getting an message that states I have a corrupt file.  This is occurring when I click on "Utilities" then "Disk Utility then verify the disk.  Any comments and expertise would be greatly appreciated.

It should NOT erase anything unless you explicitly erase the drive, in fact it may prevent loses.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • Where do I go to buy new Mac OS X Installation disks?

Our beautiful little Labrador Retriever helped herself to my Mac OS X Installation disks (and my credit card, driver's license, and wallet). I've been on Ebay and Amazon. There is one selling on ebay for the 10.5.2 but our iMac is 10.5.8. What will work, what won't work, and where do I go to buy?

    Hi,
You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.
Do not get the discs from eBay. Apple only. From eBay you do not know what you are getting. Amazon sells retail discs, not Apple installation discs.

  • MacBook Pro with 2 HDs and 2 Mac OS X installs, possible conflict?

I have just installed an SSD drive in replacement of my optical drive in my MacBook Pro. On the new drive, I did a fresh Mac OS X install and kept the old Mac OS X install on the old, original HD. I intend on formatting the old HD eventually, but I wanted to take my time to move files to the new HD manually.
I am experiencing issues with the fresh Mac OS X install on boot and only on boot. The new SSD drive has been selected as the default booting device.
On boot, I'll be greeted with either :
The prohibitory sign (circle with diagonal line), which will flash for a couple of seconds before booting Mac OS X from the old HD
A spinning wheel, which will turn for a couple of seconds before booting Mac OS X from the old HD
A spinning wheel, which will spin forever
If I boot in HD boot selection mode or whatever (holding Alt on boot), I am able to select the drive I wish to boot from and Mac OS X will boot flawlesly in a matter of seconds.
Is it possible that 2 Mac OS X installs on different HDs could cause such a conflict? Could formatting the old HD solve this issue?
    Thank you!

  • How do I do this:  "This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk?"

"This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk."

Stick the disk in, reboot holding c.
Disk Utility is a menu option about the 2 or 3rd screen in the installer. (don't install OS X!)
Because your booted form the installer disk, you can repair the disk.
Quit and exit the installer and reboot.
If your drive is not repaired, make a note of all what it says, for Apple to use.
Reboot and get your files off to a external drive,
Take the note and your comptuer to Apple for a warranty/Apple care call, they will replace the drive.

  • MAC OS X Installation Assistant Hangs after install

I'm a Mac Newbie, I have a MBP Intel Duo with 10.4 Tiger.
I took the default Leopard install, just doing it on top of my existing Tiger.
It took what appeared to be forever to verify the CD, but the rest of the install went ok.
Upon the reboot as part of the install, I got this purple-ish window, with the word WELCOME in different languages. I believe then, maybe 1 / 2 screens later, it asked to verify my name/addr stuff (already filled in from I'm guessing my tiger registration), I went on, and then on the next screen it asks me about a .MAC account (about 4 options w/ radio buttons ... not now/trial/buy one/etc)
This is where it hung for me. I could not select the radio buttons, I could not close the window as the window-bar's button was not even red. I could select quit from the top taskbar but it did nothing. I'm pretty sure the app running in the window's title was "MAC OS X Installation Assistant".
It did close it when I did a restart of the MBP.
All looks ok on the computer & OS, but I am a little concerned that perhaps some subsequent (post-install) steps were skipped by the "installation assistant" not finishing. Also, finder cannot seem to find something called "mac os x Installation Assistant" on he hard drive.
Any thoughts about how / where to run it?
Try re-installing 10.5 again (if it will let me)?
Anyone know what "next" steps it would have done?
(or are they un-necessary if this is not a brand new install on a new hard drive?)
I'm not even sure if it "registered" leopard.
Thanks for any feedback you can provide.
    Regards.

We had exactly the same issue at work, was fairly simple to fix, however this solution assumes that you have access to another mac?
The issue occours due to the lack of the .AppleSetupDone file, which stops the Setup Assistant from being activated on every boot.
-Boot the machine with the looping setup assistant to target disk mode (Apple+T)
    -Connect together via firewire
-On the working machine, launch terminal and enter "sudo cp /var/db/netinfo/.AppleSetupDone /Volumes/<mac hd on looping machine>/var/db/netinfo/"
    -Reboot the looping machine
-The startup assistant will resume again, make sure to match the shortname for the user to what it was previously to recover all files, should you enter something else, you can recover the home folder by launching terminal and entering "sudo chown -R <shortname> /Users/<shortname>"
    Hope this helps
