Mac OS X Leopard install disc -- optional developer installs -- help please

Hello. I have a question that I've been looking to have answered for a long time. Within the install disc for Leopard, there is a folder called Developer or something like that, and inside it are the installation packages for Xcode Tools, Web Objects, and Dashcode. I have installed these three packages on my computer (I am a computer programmer -- I have very little experience with Mac programming, but I want to get started with learning). Anyways, in addition to these three installation packages, there is a folder called Packages, and inside this folder are about twenty installation packages, with names like X11, WebObjectsDocumentation, gcc, java, and SDKs and earlier versions of Mac OS X and that kind of thing. My question is -- what are these? Are they separate from the things that the Xcode Tools package installs, or are they all included in that package? If I'm going to be developing on the Mac, are these things I am going to need? Any info in regard to this will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

My question is -- what are these?
They are sub-packages. The main XCode installer will install all the components by invoking the individual installers. The packages are separated in case you want to install the individual components (e.g. just install X11 without all the other parts).
As to whether you need them, that's only something you can answer based on what you're trying to do.
There's no harm in installing them even if you don't intend/expect to use them, other than eating a little disk space.

  • Leopard Install disc ejecting during installation

Had my HD go down.(I know, it's funny when it happens to somebody else.)
Replaced it with a new one and after some work, got it working with 10.4.11.
Go to load the Leopard install disc. (I purchased the retail version
and had Snow Cat running too.)
Restart begins to happen as I click the restart button to begin installation.
When Macbook comes back on, it spits out the disc and goes no further with the installation.
I've had some good technical help from people who know more than me.
Ruled out the dvd malfunction with the install of Tiger from the disc.
Ruled out the disc malfunction by trying it a Macbook Pro.
All the software updates are done as well as the update's updates.
I tried a firmware update, it came up 'you do not need this app."
I've tried holding 'c'. Something weird happened when I held 't' like
someone said to do. There's the option key hold down. The apple hold down.
Everything is spitting this thing out.
    I'm stuck.

  • My Mac Mini Will Not Boot From Install Disc For Re-Installation

I've tried all (at least the ones I've found) workarounds to get my Snow Leopard Install Disc to boot, but it will not. When the computer boots normally (without the DVD), I can insert the DVD and access it from there. However, when I try to use the utilities on the disc, it requires a reboot that ends up telling me to turn off my computer. I have a Late 2010 Mac Mini and I have yet to try booting from a disc, so I don't know if this is a new problem or an old one. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unplug everything from your computer except a wired keyboard/mouse and the monitor. If your Mini still won't boot from the install DVD try resetting the PRAM and SMC.
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
If that doesn't fix the problem remove any RAM (if you upgraded) and replace with the Mini's original RAM.  There is also this document you might want to read, Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup.
If that all fails I would take the Mini to the Apple store. It should still be under warranty if you bought it late last year.

I used utilities to source my 10.6 snow leopard install disc to my main hardrive, and now when I turn on my computer the apple with the spinning wheel stays on the screen and stuck like that. How do I fix it Help please. I already tried all the commands such as Command R, Holding down the Option key, C and holding down shift at the start up but nothing happens.
initialy All I was trying to do was downgrade 10.7 to 10.6 .

You have to consider the possibility the hard drive may be dying.    If your data isn't backed up, try one of the tools below:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1689
Once you are sure your data is backed up, we can examine other possibilities.  In the meantime call AppleCare for your original installation DVDs.  You may need them.

  • How do I reinstall my operating system after hard drive upgrade on MacBook pro?  I have Snow Leopard install disc

How do I reinstall my operating system (Snow Leopard) after a hard drive upgrade. I did a Time Machine backup before the new hard drive was installed. I put in the Snow Leopard install disc and don't get the icon I'm supposed to double click to install Snow Leopard and then the backup.
    HELP PLEASE!!

Is the new HHD in the MBP?
Is the new HDD formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)?
Where is the old HDD? In an enclosure?  What is on the old HDD, your user data?  Is the Snow Leopard System on it?
Do you have a separate Time Machine Disk with your user data?
Answers to these questions should give an exact status of your situation so that one can proceed in the right direction.

  • MacBook Pro will not read Snow Leopard install disc.

Trying to install Snow Leopard on daughter's MacBook Pro, which is still on 10.5.8 so that she can install Lion. Her computer refuses to read the Snow Leopard install disc and keeps kicking out the disc.

Are you using a retail 10.6 disk that looks like this?
and not the gray install disks that look like this? The Gray Disks are machine specific and only have the drivers for the Mac that they shipped with.

  • Mac OSX 10.5 Install Disc

I lost my leopard install disc for my PowerPC Mac G5 (no intel 2003 model). I need to reset the password and apparently, this is the only way that will work. I tried running the terminal commands and apples support, but had no luck.
    Can anyone direct me to:
    1) A place on apple's site I could download it?
    2) A place I could buy it used without spending more than $30?
    Thanks

I need to reset the password
Here's one method to reset the password without the install disc:
    1. boot computer and hold the "apple" key and the "s" key.
    2. wait for terminal show
    3. release keys
    4. type without the quotes: "/sbin/mount -uaw"
    5. press enter
    6. type without the quotes: "rm /var/db/.applesetupdone
    7. press enter
    8. type without the quotes: "reboot"
    9. press enter
This will let you create a new admin account when you reboot your computer.
Also, without the discs, look at Mac OS X Tip - No Password, No Root, No CD? No Problem.
    http://www.macobserver.com/tip/2003/06/16.1.shtml
Here is a way to get around not knowing the admin password on Macs.
To reset your OS X password without an OS X CD you need to enter terminal and create a new admin account:
       1. Reboot
       2. Hold apple + s down after you hear the chime.
       3. When you get text prompt enter in these terminal commands to create a brand new admin account (hitting return after each line):
              * mount -uw /
              * rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
              * shutdown -h now
       4. After rebooting you should have a brand new admin account. When you login as the new admin you can simply delete the old one and you’re good to go again!

  • HELP - Reinstalling iLife from Leopard Install Discs

    I have a question...
I need to reinstall ONLY iMovie and iDVD from the Leopard Install discs. (My computer came with Leopard and iLife 08)
If I click on the option "install bundled software only", can I choose which application to install?
If I can't choose, will my iTunes and iPhoto libraries be deleted because I reinstalled iLie '08?
    Thanks!!!

I may be wrong, but I was under the impression that iLife was not on the Leopard install DVD.
It comes on the system HD but that's it.
If you want to be sure, download Pacifist (yahoo for it - it's free and made by charlessoft) and see if you can find it on the DVD. If it's there, simply extract it.
I would backup your libraries in any case before doing anything.

  • Leopard Install Disc Won't Mount on PowerMac G4

I'm having problems installing Leopard and am looking for advice. My internal DVD reader won't mount the installation disc - this has been a long-standing issue with my DVD drive: it can read some DVDs but not others. This is only the second time I've had trouble reading an actual Apple-manufactured DVD, though. (The first time, it was iLife - I eventually got around the problem by using a third-party DVD drive to install iLife, and that worked fine.) This time, though, while trying to install Leopard from the external DVD drive, the installation failed halfway through. This happened twice in a row, and I had to go back to my original system discs that came with the computer and reinstall the original system (10.2) in order to get my computer working again.
Now, I have two questions that arise from this. One, is this DVD-reading problem on my internal drive something that can be fixed with a Firmware update or something? I've searched without success. Or does the drive have to be replaced completely?
Second, is the problem with trying to install from the external DVD drive likely to be an issue with the Leopard install disc being a dual layer disc (if it is - I have no idea), and maybe the reason it fails halfway through is because my external DVD drive is only able to read one layer of the DVD? Or am I completely barking up the wrong tree with this one? Is it just a bad idea to try and install from an external DVD drive, full stop?
Colour me baffled! Any advice gratefully received.

I do not know for sure, but as the Leopard install DVD has a capacity of over 7GB it may well be a dual-layer DVD.
Assuming your G4 PowerMac otherwise meets the minimum requirements for Leopard (867 MHz or faster, 512 MB memory, 9GB free space on hard drive, etc.) it is possible there is a flaw in the DVD. When you attempted to install did the installer successfully verify the DVD? You could try using Disk Utility to verify the DVD.
You might consider a new internal DVD drive. I had to replace the optical drive in my G5 when it failed. They are quite reasonably priced here: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/optical-drives/superdrives/powermac/
Do you have an external FireWire hard drive? Did you attempt to install Leopard on that drive?

    Hello there, curtq.
Great job troubleshooting your issue so far. The following Knowledge Base article offer some great practical steps for troubleshooting Wi-Fi issues with your iOS device:
iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections - Apple Support
If following the initial troubleshooting steps recommended at the beginning of the article, you may want to then proceed to:
Unable to access the Internet while connected to Wi-Fi
If you're using a public or commercial network, you may need to log in or subscribe.
Check to see if you have a self-assigned IP address:
Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and locate the Wi-Fi network to which you're connected and tap .
If your IP address is 169.254.xxx.xxx, you may not be able to access the Internet.
If you do not have a self-assigned IP address, see if other Wi-Fi devices on your network have Internet access.
If they do not, consult with your network administrator or ISP for further assistance.
If they do, reset network settings on your device by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Note: This will reset all network settings including:
previously connected Wi-Fi networks and passwords
    recently used Bluetooth accessories
    VPN and APN settings
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

  • How can I get past a Snow Leopard install disc hang-up?

Trying to upgrade 2009 Mac Mini to Snow Leopard from 5.6.8. Install disc won't allow install to Mac HD because it insists Time Machine is using Mac HD for backups, but it isn't. Time Machine is using a partitioned 1T external drive. How can I get the install disc to acknowledge and upgrade on the internal HD?

Allan, There was exactly that file on the internal HD - and on each of the three partitions of the external drive. I dragged all such files to the Trash, which seem to eliminate much of the file(s), but the Trash won't empty completely because of a message that "BootX" is locked, as is "boot.efi" - though I'm instructed to hold Option and Empty Trash (which won't hightlight; actually a "continue" button is the only choice in a dialog box). So now I'm not sure any of these "locks" are clearing; I want to re-start the computer before trying to install Snow Leopard again, and I can't have this hung up in the Trash in any case.  Anything more you could suggest?
Thanks so much for your response and help.
