Mac OS X Leopard Install Problems

I'm trying to install Mac OS X Leopard onto a Western Digital WDH1CS5000N MyBook Home Edition External Hard Drive using a FW connection. I partitioned the drive to allow it to be installed on and began the installation. However, in the early part of installation, install fails. It says it cannot validate BaseSystem Package. Any way to fix it? Or do I need to get a replacement disc?

17 inch i7 Macbook Pro Snow leopard install problems

Got my new 17 inch i7 MBP, powered it up everythings fine. So I go to re partition the drive and do a clean system install. Middle of the install it fails. Log file shows it cant read files from the DVD.
So I grab a snow leopard install version 10.6 to install from. It will not boot the mbp i7. It hangs on the apple screen with no activity circle underneath the apple logo. Same for 10.6.2 SL install disc I have.
I then try to install SL to a external drive and update it to 10.6.3. It boots all my non i7 macs here but when I try to boot the i7 mbp it hangs again on the apple screen.
I really want to use the i7 machine and Im dreading waiting on apple to send me mbp 17 replacement disks. I have no problems buying a 10,6,3 version of the SL installer but after my experiences with 10.6 and 10.6.2 and the external disk to upgrade to 10.6.3 I have a feeling the i5/i7 machines need specific installer discs.
Is any one aware of this or run in to it yet ? Thanks.

The only OS installer that will work with your MBP is the one that came with the Mac originally so you will need to wait for a new set.

Leopard Install problem on iBook G4: Can't mount iBook as FW device anymore

I'll try to very briefly describe my situation and problem, and I appreciate your thoughts ahead of time.
I have a later model iBook G4 (1.2 Ghz, 1.2 GB RAM) that was successfully installed with Leopard about a year ago. It worked great but lately the computer significantly slowed down where basic processes were intolerantly slow. Not having any essential information on it (as I have an iMac Intel as our main home computer), I decided to do an Erase and Install of Leopard onto the iBook, thinking I could just start from scratch. The install was fine and the iBook was very fast again. Ignorantly, I thought if I zapped the PRAM (option-apple, P-R), the computer would run even more efficiently, and that's when I started having start-up problems. It then froze on the gray Apple logo page with the spinning dial. I was too greedy; I should have been content with how it was running to do a random thing like that.
I tried to boot up from my Leopard install disk; I did the restart-option thing and got to the page to choose the HD or the Install Disk, but the install disk never booted.
I read about using the iBook as a firewire device connected to my iMac via the restart-T function. I was able to mount it successfully and reached the point on the installer disk where it came up among other options of drives to install the OS. However, the install disk said it could not install Leopard on the iBook/FW because it needed to be repartitioned as a GUID Partition Drive via Disk Utility. I had no idea what this meant and after exploring options, I decided to erase the iBook HD and see if that enabled me to load Leopard; it didn't help. And then I stumbled across how to make the drive a GUID Partition, and then ala, I was able to start loading Leopard. Unfortunately, about 10 minutes into the load, my iMac went to sleep; I woke it up and realized that the Leopard install had froze. I had to do a hard reset of the iMac, and tried to get back to where I left off, but now I'm unable to get my iBook read as a FW device on the iMac; in other words, the restart-T on the iBook no longer works. When I start the iBook now, there is only a gray screen with no apple logo.
By erasing the iBook HD and incompletely installing Leopard, did I kill the ability to do the restart-T command? Or is it still in there some how? After multiple attempts, it's currently not working.
I have already resigned myself that I've killed it and plan to buy a new Apple laptop, but I thought I'd try y'all for one last try.

I was able to reformat the drive back to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and Apple Partition map via the iMac.
And as you suggested, I put the iMac in Target Disk Mode with the Leopard disk installed. I even got the iBook to recognize the Install Disk; however, upon selecting it, it would freeze at the gray screen with the Apple logo.
I put it away for several hours and decided to try the original Panther install disks. I put the Panter Install Disk #1 into the iBook optical drive and did the restart-option think and selected the install disk. Lo' and behold, I actually got past the apple logo and spinning dial into the start-up screen for installation where I am asked to choose a language! This is the farthest I have got in 24 hours! I proceeded to select English and continue . . . but then the system froze.
After a few more attempts, I am getting less and less progress. It seems that giving the iBook a break from troubleshooting seemed to help; repeated successive attempts only seemed to freeze me at consecutively earlier steps.
I'll try again in the morning with the Panther disks.

Snow Leopard Install problems on Macbook Pro with bad optical drive

I've tried this (refer to article below) to install Snow Leopard on a Macbook Pro with a bad optical drive, but I am not able to choose a wi-fi network, or install disk after startup. Is there something else I need to do?
To use Remote Install Mac OS X or Mac OS X Server:
Insert the Mac OS X or Mac OS X Server Install Disc into the optical disc drive of the other computer.
If the other computer is a Mac, open /Applications/Utilities/Remote Install Mac OS X. On Windows, choose "Remote Install Mac OS X" from the Install Assistant.
Read the introduction and click Continue.
Choose the install disc you want to use, and click Continue.
Choose a network connection: AirPort, if you are using an AirPort network, or Ethernet, if the other computer is on an Ethernet network and you have an optional Apple USB Ethernet Adapter connecting your MacBook Air or Mac mini to the same network. Click Continue.
Restart your MacBook Air or Mac mini and hold down the Option key as it starts up, until you see a list of available startup disks.
Click Continue in Remote Install Mac OS X.
If you chose AirPort as your network in step 5, on your MacBook Air or Mac mini choose your AirPort network from the pop-up list.
If the network is secure, you will be prompted for a password. You can enter a private network name by choosing the ellipsis (...) and typing the name.
If you chose AirPort as your network in step 5, when you see the AirPort status icon indicating signal strength, click Continue in Remote Install Mac OS X.
You can now reinstall software, reset your password or run Disk Utility using instructions from the User's Guide.

Are you able to connect the two via Firewire cable? If so you can boot the MBP into Target Disk Mode. Then boot the other computer from the OS X installer disc. The installer should detect the hard drive of the MBP as an eligible target destination.
If you have a spare hard drive or at least 10 GBs of usable space on an external drive, then you can create a small 8 GB partition on that drive. Then clone the installer DVD to that partition using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can then boot the MBP from that partition using OPTION boot: Start the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears. Select the icon for the cloned DVD then click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4.Check the box labeled Erase destination.
5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external partition.
Source means the OS X Installer DVD.

Leopard install problems on G4 AGP with processor upgrade

Hi,
I've got an olde PowerMac G4 (AGP 450 or so Mhz) that was upgraded many years ago to a PowerLogix 7455 Dual 1.3 Ghz processor. It has Boot ROM version 4.2.8, and has been running Tiger 10.4.11 faithfully, but I thought I would bring it up to speed with Leopard and get it in line with the rest of my machines.
The Leopard install disc (10.5) won't boot the machine. After I run the installer and the machine re-boots, the drive churns, spits out the disc and then re-boots.
So I looked into the whole "disc pops out issue" in the KB and this G4 AGP does NOT need the firmware update listed in the KB to solve a similar problem on Quicksilvers (FYI, its a MATSHITADVD-ROM SR-8585 r1A28)
The machine meets all Leopard requirements, so thinking it was the drive (since the disc kept popping out) I booted into target disc mode and installed 10.5 from a PowerBook G4.
But now when I boot the G4 from that drive, it does not get past the grey Apple screen with the spinner... the machine shuts down just as it would normally get to the blue screen.
The G4 boots fine from the clone I made just before I started all this (Phew!) so I am back to square one, just wish I could bring the G4 up to Leopard.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I am getting confused your your use of "installer". Being able to run an Installer implies that you actually got the computer to boot from the DVD so you are actually able to run the Installer program. In the second instance when the other computer was in TDM did you actually install 10.5 and now the grey screen issue is when it is booting to 10.5 on your computer, or are you still hanging on booting to the DVD?
The G4 boots fine from the clone I made just before I started all this (Phew!) so I am back to square one, just wish I could bring the G4 up to Leopard.
I assume this is some pre-Leopard OS.
Are you using a retail version of Leopard (black color) or gray discs that will only install on the machine with which they originally came and in particular if they came with an Intel computer will not like a PPC?

Mac OS X Leopard iSync problem

I use iSync
I rely upon iSync
Now on Mac OS X 5 (Leopard) my USB-connected Nokia phone (6136) is not recognised by iSync because of some incompatibility between the software on the phone and on the Mac.
System Profiler can see phone when connected in Default Mode but goes into a loop when connecting in Data Transfer mode.
Is this an Apple or a Nokia problem? Whatever ... it should not be MY problem!
I really think Nokia developers should be URGENTLY communicating with Apple to resolve this as it is IMPACTING YOUR CUSTOMERS.
It has certainly messed up my daily business practice and my daily social practice.

In fact, there is a way without Pacifist, you need only your Tiger Installation disk and Terminal app (Finder -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal)
First, get root shell - start up a terminal and enter in command prompt:
sudo -s
this will ask your password
Second, you need to backup your original kexts - in terminal enter this:
mkdir /kexts.orig
mv /System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Content/PlugIns/AppleUSBCDC* /kexts.orig
Third, insert Tiger install disk and copy proper kexts into the place:
cd /
pax -r -z -f /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ DVD/System/Installation/Packages/Essentials.pkg/Content/Archive.pax.gz *AppleUSBCDC*
And reboot

Was on vista now deleting it and going back 2 osx leopard - install problem

Ok guys mad problems here ihave a macbook pro core2duo 2.16 (all silver one)
i thought i might install windows vista ultimate on it
it worked and when it booted said had errors reading bootable partition 80 or something like that.
anyway i decided i didnt like it so went back to installing mac leopard
i booted from leopard cd - went thru installation
went to disk utility and made it one partition (journaled)
i went to install it all is well until i get to "47minutes left"- it just stays on 47 minutes left then 5 minutes later gives me this message:
INSTALL FAILED
MAC OSX COULD NOT BE INSTALLED ON YOUR COMPUTER
THE INSTALLED COULD NOT VALIDATE THE CONTENTS OD THE "BSD" PACKAGE
CONTACT THE SOFTWARE MANUFACTURER FOR ASSISTANCE
CLICK RESTART TO RESTART YOUR COMPUTER AND TRY INSTALLING AGAIN.
so i restarted, did the same thing and went to disk utility, verified and repaired the hard disk to try remedy the problem, started installing and the same thing happened again
anybody help ?? im just trying to restore osx on to it!

The critifcal file to have for iWeb to work on your websites is named Domain.sites2 and is located in your Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder.
If you don't have a backup copy of that file you will have to rebuild your sites from scratch. Chapter 2.3 on the iWeb FAQ.org site has tips on using some of the existing files, image, audio, video, etc., from the published site in the creation of the new site.

Hi there,
Leopard will not boot on my 12in powerbook after installing?
I have a problem installing leopard on my 12in powerbook with a broken optical drive. My powerbook would not boot and would just go to the blue screen, i did all the things to try to get it too boot and it would not.
So i erased the powerbooks drive with disk utility(mac os extended journalled) using target mode with my mbp. I have linked my powerbook to my mbp with target mode and have tried to install leopard from target mode. The computer restarts when i put the leopard dvd in i hold D (have tried without as well) appears to work fine choose my powerbooks hard drive and installs the leopard. Seams perfect. Then when I go to boot my powerbook i just get a flashing ? and finder symbol in a folder.
To add also after the install the registration comes up on my mbp is that correct?
I am completly stuck am i missing something out here i am doing research but can not come up with an answer. thank you for any help

It is hard to say. Unless you documented the exact steps you took last Christmas, it could be that you had the sequence confused of what happened. These installations are difficult at best. I'd get the optical drive repaired or replaced, or an external Firewire optical drive from http://www.macsales.com/
Limping around with broken parts is not good for operating system stability.

Snow Leopard install problems...help please

I'm trying to do a fresh install of snow leopard on my Mac mini. My hd has been formatted but I'm having 2 problems. First if I try and run the install from SL ( that I have installed on an external drive) the install goes great but once I get to the restart the install doesn't continue, it acts as if I'm trying to start a new install.
If I boot directly from the install DVD the install just hangs at 31 minutes remaining, this happens about 1 minute into the install.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Any ideas?

Final Cut Pro 6 on Mac OS Snow Leopard installation problem HELP!!!

After 2 - 3 hours of installing all 10 FCS 2.0 discs and Software Updates, I can't seem to launch Final Cut Pro 6.0.6. I get *"...software maybe damaged or not installed.."* So I removed all of them and only custom-installed Final Cut Pro 6.0.6. It works with no problem!!! Then I custom-installed Soundtrack, Motion, DVD Studio Pro etc..., I can't launch Final Cut Pro 6.0.6. again! What the **** is going on? I get that "damaged" warning and Final Cut Pro icon is replaced by missing application icon.
My Mac Pro also has _Pro Tools 8 LE_ with _003 Mixer Rack connect to USB_. That's it. No other application. You think this is maybe causing the problem?

Carbon Copy Cloner is pretty simple to use. If you have any questions, post back or read the documentation. As I said in the user tip, test your clone after you make it to be sure it is bootable and your apps work.

Mac OS X Leopard install disc -- optional developer installs -- help please

Hello. I have a question that I've been looking to have answered for a long time. Within the install disc for Leopard, there is a folder called Developer or something like that, and inside it are the installation packages for Xcode Tools, Web Objects, and Dashcode. I have installed these three packages on my computer (I am a computer programmer -- I have very little experience with Mac programming, but I want to get started with learning). Anyways, in addition to these three installation packages, there is a folder called Packages, and inside this folder are about twenty installation packages, with names like X11, WebObjectsDocumentation, gcc, java, and SDKs and earlier versions of Mac OS X and that kind of thing. My question is -- what are these? Are they separate from the things that the Xcode Tools package installs, or are they all included in that package? If I'm going to be developing on the Mac, are these things I am going to need? Any info in regard to this will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

They are sub-packages. The main XCode installer will install all the components by invoking the individual installers. The packages are separated in case you want to install the individual components (e.g. just install X11 without all the other parts).
As to whether you need them, that's only something you can answer based on what you're trying to do.
There's no harm in installing them even if you don't intend/expect to use them, other than eating a little disk space.

OSX Snow Leopard install problems

I need to install Snow Leopard over 10.5.8, but can't get the install to complete. If I do a straight install, it'll progress for about 15 mintues, then notify me that the install will complete on restart. If I resart, the disc will eject in the startup screen. No progress saved.
Similarly, if attempt to erase and install, the disc will eject when I restart and I'm unable to ever reach the disc utility. Any clues? Notions? Awful pronouncements? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That's the disc you should be using, but if two different discs have failed, the fault is in your machine. Try booting from your old install disc and use
Disk Utility
   1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
   2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
      Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
   3. Click the First Aid tab.
   4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
   5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
   6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
Let us know what turns up and if by chance you have either DiskWarrior or TechToolPro,use one of them to repair directory corrupton, if Disk Utility can't.

Mac OSX X Leopard Install Failed

So heres the story, i went to reinstall leopard on my power mac g5 dual 1.8 ghz and it says it failed because of something with additionvoices.pkg i need this machine as it is the only tower i have. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Leopard install problem

I thought my computer met the criteria for the Leopard upgrade, but after installing the disc and waiting a long time, it said I could not install it. Now I can't get the disc out, or my screen back. Help!

Restart the computer with the mouse button or eject key pressed; this may cause the disk to come out. If it doesn't, press the Option, Command, O, and F keys, restarting again if needed, and enter the following:
eject cd
mac-boot
The disk should now be out of the drive.

New gen Mac Mini: Boot Camp install problems

I've got a new version Mac Mini that was just released, 4GB RAM, 250GB hard drive.
Fired up Boot Camp, and pressed the button offering a 32GB Windows partition.
It rebooted into my OEM XP Pro SP2 CD, and installed OK (as in it loaded the files).
The Mini then reboots, and dies with these 3 lines:
*Press any key to boot from CD.....*
*Disk error*
*Press any key to restart*
BTW, pressing any key does NOT restart anything. I have to use the power button to down it.
I popped out the XP boot CD by holding down the mouse, and then downed the system again.
Then I held down the Option key, which offers me the boot menu, and I selected Windows.
It then dies again with the bottom 2 lines.
I've tried removing the partition, and asking Boot Camp to make a 30GB partition.
Same end results (it takes awhile obviously to get to the failure).
Also tried a brand-new XP Pro SP3 install CD. Same results.
Any ideas? Thanks!

I figured it out last night, and you are correct, the default Windows install method will NOT work.
When XP first boots, it actually offers 5 choices, and the default is "Use this filesystem as-is without formatting". It will happily install, but that default choice does not write the MBR (master boot record) onto the disk. When you reboot again, the MBR isn't there, and the firmware halts. One little 512-byte sector keeps it from working.
Really, Apple should write a MBR onto that partition during the Boot Camp process, it wouldn't be all that much extra trouble.
