Mac os X leopard will not install on fresh partition :S

Just recently before a Genius Bar appointment, I thought I'd reinstall Leopard for them so they wouldn't have to mess around with anything in the system that I modded (software wise, like changing the dock XD). I pop the disk in, and is tells me that OS X can't boot from the partition. I zeroed out the data, twice. No luck. I can't be using this crappy windows install forever. HALP!

You insert the Leopard DVD and reboot and hold down the "C" key. Then you reinstall the OS from there. Choose Erase and Install (option on page after language screen).

I ran into one problem when I tried to install snow leopard, The problem was I throught my Macbook had 1 GB of RAM in it, then after I my first try on install then it mentioned I did not have 1 GB of RAM, so I checked it and I only have 512 MB, so that is low and I have a 1st Generation Macbook, So now I ordered a 2 GB of RAM for my MacBook I'm waiting for the memory to arrive so I can install it into my Macbook, then I will install snow leopard.

The system requirements for the OS have been public knowledge on every major tech blog, apple fan blog, apple rumor site and Apple's site for at least 4+ months. So it's not like they just decided at the 11th hour that you needed 512MB of RAM. Not to mention, just about every piece of software I've ever purchased has the system requirements printed in a very tiny print in a very un-obvious place on the packaging. So that's nothing new... for Apple and the rest of the software manufacturing world.
As the consumer, it's your responsibility to do the appropriate research (either online, over the phone or asking the sales rep) what requirements are necessary.

Mac OS 10.5 will not install

I have a powerbook G4 (non-intel) running 10.4.11. I need to upgrade to 10.5 so that I can sync with my iPad. When I put the 10.5 disk in and try and install I get the message that OS 10.5 can not install on this computer. How can I get 10.5 to install?

Make sure your PBook meets Leopard's minimum requirements.

If you are using another install disc from another Mac, that won't work. They are machine specific.
Where did you get the 10.5 disc from?

Leopard will not install on my Power G5

I recently purchased Leopard and cannot install it on my Power Mac G5.
It says that a Intel chip is required to install it.
I take it that means my mobo, but why would Apple not make their computers compatiable?
Help me out please.

It sounds like you purchased Snow Leopard and not Leopard. It is Snow Leopard which requires the Intel processor and not Leopard.

Leopard Will Not Install

I have a iMac G5 with 1.5gb ram, 1.8ghz speed. It's currently running OS X 10.3.9
Leopard does not seem to want to install on to my internal hard drive which has 23.45 gb of space left. When the installer gets to the point where you get to choose which drive you want to install on, my internal drive has a yellow triangle with the exclamation point on it. The installer tells me that the only way to install Leopard is to have it ERASE the internal hard drive. I have 2 external FireWire drives where I store my iTunes music and my Logic Projects and Video projects. The external drives do not have the yellow triangle so I suppose Leopard is able to instal there but that's not what I want. I want leopard on the internal drive.
I have tried the instruction in the "Only installation option may be Erase and Install" document.
-I dont' use TechTool
-I tried the instructions for Terminal but Terminal told me that that command dose not work.
-I tried to "repair" the internal hard disk with Disk Utility while booted on the Leopard Install disk. However, Disk Utility would not let me "repair" the internal hard disk. The "repair" button was dimmed.
Any Ideas? Maybe Leopard just can't be installed on these machines after all? Maybe it just can't be installed from 10.3.9? If that's the case I sure wish I would have gone to 10.4 at some point. (I do professional Music production with Logic and it works so well in 10.3.9 that I never wanted to upgrade the OS.
The main reason I want to upgrade is to use the new "Logic Studio". According to the box it will not run on 10.3.9. I wonder if thats' really true? I don't want to open the box to find out it does not.
Has anyone else had trouble installing Leopard on a iMac G5?
Should I call tech support? I have a feeling that they would just tell me to do what I've already done.

Most stores have up to a two week return period with a restocking fee. Call the store you got it from to find out what return period and/or restocking fee you have.
As for the inability to install, you may have come across a situation where there is insufficient free hard disk space to install on your iMac G5.
I'd free up at least 7 more GB of hard disk space. I'd also follow my upgrade FAQ* as far as other upgrading tips including making two clones of your data.

Finally I'd get Alsoft Disk Warrior to repair your directory. It is possible the version of Techtool Pro you have is not yet Leopard compatible.

Desktop manager will not install after fresh download

i have downloaded ver 5 desktop manager several times and it is not able to install. I have completely un-uninstalled the previous software and deleted the regristry keys, RIM.
After downloading the new version of software (5.01) off of the BB website and extracting the files, it will ask to install in english and then my issue pops up: a windows installer window pops up, with information and no errors. then the installer closes. the installer closes out and will not continue.
the desktop manager software will not load and i have tried several different downloads, cleaned installs and i even tried ver 4.6.
ideas?

Try using the Windows Installer Cleanup utility to see if it helps out. Can read up on that and other things to try when Windows Installer gives errors from here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555175

HT5361 I have Snow Leopard on my late model IMac. I downloaded Mountail Lion and paid for it from the Mac Store. It will not install. It takes me through several pages and then button to install is greyed out. A message that this disc is used for Time Mac

I have a late mode IMac 27" running Snow Leopard. I downloaded Mountain Lion from the Apple Store and paid for it. When I trie to install it took me through the first few pages of installation such as agrreeing to terms and the Lion Page showed up asking where I wanted to intall Mountain Lion. The install button was greyed out. I also had a message this disc is used for Time Machine. I had no other disc to choose from. Time Mahine was in the OFF position. I tried hooking up an external drive and tried using it as th Time Machine Backup. That did not work and it also said this disc is used by Time Machine. I have read of several other cases like this but have found no solution other than doinh a complee wipe of the hard drive and doing a reinstall which I really want to avoid if I can.

Look at the root of your hard drive for a folder called Backups.backupdb.
Or, a sparse bundle disk image for one of mobile computers that might have tried to back up to your Mac.
If you have those, remove them and try again.

Leopard will not install on Macbook Pro

I have been reading all the posts here and am very surprised at all the issues. I expect this out of Micrsoft not Apple. I have close to 6 hours into this install and here I sit typing this in Tiger. I had the failed install where it tells me that I have to format the drive. I spent 1 1/2 hours on the phone with tech support and all I really accomplished was learning a few keyboard shortcuts (I'm new to Mac since April of this year). Disk utility in Tiger says the drive is fine. Disk Utility in Leopard Installer says it is not and needs a minor header repair. Repair disk doesn't fix it. Any ideas? I did a repair any way. I verified disk permissions and had to do a repair. Tried Leopard again with the same result. The read me first file states you cannot do an upgrade on a UFS formatted volume. Mine is HFS. The following is what it reads at the bottom of Disk Utility:

I have 77g of storage space left so that is not it. I am new to Mac so I am not familiar enough with the file structure to get all my files. Even if I was, after the install attempt, I cannot see my network drive to do the backup. Hooking the drive directly to my Mac initiates a message to format my external drive. I have a ton of info on it so I have been backing it up to my Vista machine for most of the morning. Any ideas?

After backing everything up and attempting a clean install, I finally got it to run, but not without a fight. I started teh install and had to erase teh drive. I expected that this time. The erase was successful and it continued on. About 5 minutes into it I got a new error that stated that it failed because it could not create a folder on the volume. I restarted the machine and held down the "C" key on boot. Leopard installed without a hitch. Running nicely now. I will say that I am disappointed at how much trouble I had to go through to get to this point.

Mac Os X Leopard will not boot.

I am running leopard on a mac book pro. When I boot it it loads to the screen with the apple, fowling that it is stuck in a look at a blue screen with the progress gear.
I have tried going to the disk utility on the install disk. Repair worked, permissions repair did not. It gave me the error "Disk Utility stopped repairing permissions on "Macintosh HD" because the following error was encountered:
The underlying task reported failure on exit."
This is quite frustrating since my laptop is only about 1 month old.

Snow Leopard will not install on 2008 Intel iMac

Trying to install a purchsed copy of Snow Leopard onto an Intel iMac (2008 model). System previously on system was 10.4.11. Started the first Upgrade attempt and the upgrade stopped at 33 minutes remaining - would not progress any further.
Force power down and tried again selecting Upgrade. This time it got to 16 minutes and never went further.
Next attempt I reformatted the drive, ran Disk Utility to Repair Disk (no problems detected). The ran a full install. Stops at 16 minutes.
Tried again - Partitioned drive, erased drive, tested drive, ran installer - 15 minutes - no further.
No error messages - nothing - it just sits there.
Reset PRAM, reset SMU - same thing after another attempt.
This system was running fine under 10.4.11. We just wanted to upgrade it to 10.6 for application compatibility requirements (10.5 or higher required to run latest version of application).
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Next I'd run the AHT (Intel-based Macs: Using Apple Hardware Test) - if that picks up any hardware issue then you don't need to waste any more time troubleshooting. (Run the long test in the AHT, maybe loop it overnight if you're not in a hurry)
After that I'd boot the machine in target disk mode (How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode) and boot the other machine to the install disk - you should then be able to install to the first iMacs HD, it'll show up with a firewire symbol when you "select you destination".
If still having trouble, then I'd go into disk utilty, erase tab, options and select the "zero out data"" option. Then click the erase button. This will write to every byte on the HD, so an additional test of the integrity.

Leopard will not install on my iMac

Hey all,
so I have upgraded all of my laptops in the house with leopard with absolutely no problems. So I go to upgrade tiger to leopard on my iMac and it restarts fine but when you have to choose a location for it to install it tells you that it must erase the entire volume.
there is more than enough space on the HD but the little yellow triangle still appears so I can not proceed with the install without losing everything on the comp which I really do not want to do!

In your Utilities folder is an app called DU for Disk Utility.app
Run it, select your physical drive and check the disk.
Then select your OS-X partition and run permissions repair.
Zapping the PRAM is a process of resetting some of the boot items.
Here's how to "zap PRAM"

Shut down your computer. Turn the computer back on and immediately hold down Command-Option-P-R, continuing to press until you hear the startup sound for the second time. This resets the computer’s parameter random-access memory (PRAM).
IMPORTANT: Resetting PRAM may change some system settings and preferences. Use System Preferences to restore your settings.
Sometimes we forget about this Mac argot which has no correspondence to the PC world.
You'll catch on quickly though. Spend some time on these boards and you will have Mac-speak down pat.

Retail Leopard will not install

Replace the hard drive tried to install the retail version of leopard Version 10.6 (don't have the original computer disks) I get a message that this software cannot be installed on this computer. While it won't install I could use the disk utility on the install disk for format the hard drive using the GUIDpartitionscheme any suggestions

If you no longer have your install DVD, you may be able to obtain it from Apple Customer Relations - 1-800-767-2775.
You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.
If you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number. Here's a list of links to all of those -

Just bought a new 250gb HD for my macbook (latest model) and because it was ex-display I did not get a recovery disk - I bought a retail version of Leopard from COMPUSA (they were selling them off) but when I try and install leopard from scratch I get the message that it cannot be installled with my mac? It did the same on the other hd that came with the mac, and I have used the disk for drivers for vista and everything was okay so not sure what is going on?????? It refers me to the document "read before you install" and i cant see anything that would make it not run????

You need the disc that came with that model computer as the computer is newer than the retail disc your using. If you can't get the disc from wherever you bought the computer (and they should give it to you)then you'll need to call Apple. I believe they'll sell you a set for something like $10.

Leopard will not install+volumes not readable

After unrepairable HD error, managed to resurrect computer with OSX10.4.11 on a new 500GB PATA drive. Once almost everything was working (cannot currently send email despite settings being same as Macbook Pro running Leopard) I decided to update to Leopard. I had been advised not to start afresh with Leopard until the existing system was working.
On first attempt at the Leopard upgrade - the installation failed saying HD was wrong format. Using Disk utility from Tiger System DVD confirmed that no permissions errors and that it was Mac OS Extended (Journaled) which I thought was correct.
Second attempt and this HD now has Yellow triangle with Exclamation mark stating that I cannot install on this HD.
I have another new 500GB PATA drive which I can slot into the computer. I was advised about partitioning to 2x250GB. What type of install ought I to do bearing in mind that I have spent many hours resurrecting the OSX 10.4.11 software with settings etc.
Another issue is that 2 of the existing HDs are no longer readable in the current OSX 10.4.11. They are detected in Disk Utility, but no longer display Volume name. When I restart computer, it gives the following dialogue box.
Disk Insertion
The disk you inserted was not readable by the computer
Then 3 buttons: Initialize, Ignore or Eject
So far I have been pressing Ignore as I do not want to wipe data. Mac Help hasn't been able to when searching for Disk Insertion or Initialize or Initialise.
The jumpers are set to cable select, previously I'd had them set up as Master and slave, changing back hasn't had any positive effect. They were previously readable when I thought the main HD was on the way out. The Finder wasn't functioning properly in main account. A new Admin account had all working well - so I used this to transfer vital data to other drives from the one I thought was failing. One worked temporarily, but then underwent this seemingly irreversible change. The data is backed up on external HD, but want to avoid relying on this if possible.
When resurrecting OSX10.4.11 on new HD, I tried copying user settings and the fault was transferred identically - Disk Utility had indicated the fault was of a Hardware Nature and was unable to repair the disk. Therefore I wiped the new disk and installed OSX10.4.11 copying just the applications. No problems - just the hassle of setting up software in manner I like.

Snow Leopard will not install MacBook 1.83 GHz

Hi,
I have a retail Snow Leopard 10.6.6 installation DVD and I'm trying to install it on a MacBook 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo:

The MacBook has 2GB of RAM installed and a HD of 320 GB.
The Snow Leopard installation loads but it states that Mac OS X cannot be installed in the computer.
However, it seems that this machine has all the requirements of Snow Leopard. Any thoughts?

Oh, I see. Indeed, what I meant by "retail DVD" was that I have a 10.6.6 that came with my MacBook Pro. I will try to get a Snow Leopard Install DVD 10.6 to see if it solves the issue.
